I wonder what it's like to be Japanese and then see Metroid Prime 4 as closer. Just like the most mild, tame reaction, as if we got a farm sim as a closer here.

I love seeing Japanese Metroid fans post cool stuff on Twitter. They're just as enthusiastic and passionate about the series as we are, even despite there being fewer of them.

Anyway I was just thinking about this OP the other day so I'll start off with this, the second season opening of Honey and Clover:



In addition to being just a weird friggin opening, the song itself hooked me so hard that it was in regular rotation in my car for years while driving back and forth to college. Actually all the OPs and EDs for this series are fantastic. Actually the whole series is fantastic. Ran across it during a sort of idyllic, formative time in my life so it tugged the heartstrings at the perfect time for them to be ripe for the tugging. And the music takes me right back.

I only watched the first episode of Death Parade, but that OP song is so much fun! I had a friend who loved it and would play it while driving.

Is anyone else kinda worried we won’t get any surprises this direct? Like even last direct pyoro didn’t leak everything, but this time I have a bad feeling he already leaked everything except the closer. Like think about what we are almost certainly getting: Mario RPG news blowout, splatoon dlc blowout, warioware trailer, mario wonder trailer, peach game blowout, Mario kart dlc, Mario vs DK, F-Zero announcement(s), and another Code/ trace memory remakes. That’s enough to fill out most of a direct, so I just hope we get some surprises in here beyond the closer. Maybe smash news?

We did get surprises from this Direct though. Mario vs DK, F-Zero, Smash DLC. It's just that we got them several days beforehand. And that's not the fault of the Direct.

Just because the surprise is leaked beforehand doesn't make the Direct worse. It just gives you more reason to stop looking at leaks.

We’ve had some days to sit on them, how do you feel about the leaked announcements so far? I think I’m at:

Mario Vs DK - If it’s like the first game rad. If it isn’t no thanks I’m good. This has no bearing on big DK, so whatever there.

F-Zero 99 - Hopefully we get both this and a GX port, but just by itself I think there’s a good deal of potential to be cool. It’ll probably have a shelf life which stinks, but if it is free with NSO and I get at least a few good hours with it awesome!

Sakurai appears during the Direct thanking everyone for Smash support. He then announces some new mini games will be added including break the target along with a board game mode similar to Smash Wii U. He then announces they are also adding one more character to Smash, to celebrate a series finally launching on Nintendo Switch…..


Screen fades to black, we see the smash invite floating down a dark, rainy, neon lit street in Japan, lands on someone’s foot, he picks it up…..

Next headline, Yakuza 0 launches on Switch right after the Direct.

Bloodborne is an absolute masterpiece, imo. It's in my top ten for sure. Glad you're enjoying it. When I checked Era recently, I noticed you'd posted an LTTP there, and I'm assuming you're still updating it? I'll have to have a read through when I find the time.

But yeah, Bloodborne does world design exceptionally well, and traveling from location to location feels simultaneously interconnected and claustrophobic, as you put it. Yharnam feels like a big city, but this is more accomplished through art direction and sights, versus pointlessly huge areas (though I know some folks really aren't fond of the Forbidden Woods). This is why I just didn't vibe with Elden Ring much, I'm tired of everything being a tedious open world. I thought FromSoft would make theirs better, and in fairness, they did, but the more linear dungeons were still the actual meat of the game.

You'll play The Old Hunters, right? It elevates the entire experience.

Yup! I’ve been updating it. And yup, Laurence and Ludwig are already down and I’m on Maria now! The base game already made an impression that it would be one of my all time favorites, but the DLC brings it up even more. It feels so naturally integrated too. Like if you got an item after the Wet Nurse that took you to the Hunter’s Nightmare, it would still flow so well. The game still feels like it’s escalating, and that I’m in the final third of it

I feel really lucky that I’m experiencing base game + DLC all in one. It’s an absolute treat.

I remember reading a blog from one of Retros artists a bit after Tropical Freeze released, and they were saying how much they've been recently influenced by FROM's work. It makes a lot of sense because my feelings while playing their Souls(bornekieroring) games over the last decade are the only games that give me the same feelings of atmosphere and world building that Retro's games give me. Those games were obviously influenced by Metroid and Prime, so I'm curious to see what cues Retro might take from them, if any. Or maybe they'll just simply evolve their own formula.

I do hope Rero can get on FROMs level in terms of creature/character design. They're good, but definitely not to the level of their environment artists.

I would actually agree that the creature design in Prime could use an upgrade! There’s a ton of great stuff, but yeah I think they could go even higher

I've been playing Bloodborne for hours a day for the past week or so. It's tied for my favorite game of all time, alongside XB2.

Incredible set pieces, boss designs, lore, worldbuilding, atmosphere, environmental storytelling, and most importantly, gameplay. I pick it up and get re-obsessed with it at least once per year.

I started a Bloodtinge build today. Basically dumping all my stats into Bloodtinge and parrying my way through the game. Named my character Perry von Gunthorpe. Already fighting the Shadows of Yharnam....

I’m already thinking about NG+ and I’m not even done with NG!
