StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

Nate has already said earlier he's not addressing RAM in this video, but that 8GB does not apply from what he's heard

Not if it's Mediatek developing the chip using Nvidia's IP.

Mediatek has always been using ARM CPUs and ARM Mali or PowerVR GPUs, but recently they partnered with Nvidia to enter the infotainment market.
I don't think they would sign a deal without extensive R&D before-hand.

Some of their chips are already on TSMC's 4nm.
They're actually well ahead of Nvidia when it comes to mobile SoCs.

Nintendo "could have" cancelled t239 when they heard Mediatek had a better chip close to finalization.
I think Mediatek would be very happy to share some of those R&D costs and bring-in a new client.

It's all speculation of course and t239 is probably our guy, but those 5% of doubt keep nagging me.
Mediatek isn’t using Nvidia GPU in their SoC, they are using a dGPU

I don't even want to imagine the black magic Nintendo's own teams would be able to do with tools like DLSS and a whooping amount of 16GB at their hands.

Like ... how hard can they go and school others?
imagine smash bros on switch 2 really looking like their CG movies that are the ultimate/smash 4 trailers and the smash ultimate story cutscenes... 🤩

I don't think 16GB vs 12GB would make all that much of a difference, RAM speed will always be a bigger concern than the overall amount.

I would say both are equally important. With Series S amount is the biggest issue.

In a world where the Series S didn't exist I would say absolutely go for 16. A lot of devs had issues with the Switch having less ram than the other consoles.

But in a world with the Series S 12 is more than fine.

I think a lot of people have forgotten about Nvidia's texture neural upscaling tech that allows for compression of high res textures so that they don't use as much VRAM. This will very likely be a tool ready to use by the time Switch NG comes out. So even if the RAM usable by games is only about 10gb, the textures will be able to be compressed, leaving room for more VRAM and System RAM split.

Sony Santa Monica talked about neural upscaling for God of War and they made it work for select texture maps. Expanding on that could make for some good savings if the upscale is fast enough

This article is extremely bad and completely misunderstands the paper.

This paper is about a hypothetical compression technique for saving storage space, it says nothing about saving RAM (because you still have to decompress it).

This compression and decompression technique is also extremely computationally expensive and is probably 15 years away from being viable.

The tech market should've reached this point before Wii times, imagine what we could've had.
I have already imagined but home tech and mobile tech progress were not at the same level.
Nintendo did not sell well the GC and was really hesitant.
Mobile tech evolution was really fast especially IN COVID era ( During and more after )

Could All Switch 1 games running on switch 2 have better framerates, or do they need to be patched in to do that?

Only direct benefit without any outside dev work would be games with unlocked framerate being able to run a bit better due to more power avaiable.

For everything else, you need devs to work on it.

But still, the price for how much space is on these Type A card is ridiculous for an all-age gaming system that you're also buying games for. Folks would probably rather stick with current microSD as non-runnable storage for Drake games where they'd need to copy to internal.
Maybe that’s why they are giving 512GB to storage at most :p

So you can buy eventually

Why is everyone concerned about RAM? If Nintendo launches with only 6 or 8 GB, I'm sure we will have the option to download more RAM later on.
The problem is that, like the knowledge needed to access OG Zelda's 8th dungeon, the download is exclusive for Nintendo Power subscribers. That's why we are concerned.

because 6/8GB of RAM memory, would make extremely hard to develop games on Switch sucessor, developers are already frustated due to Xbox Series S low memory, at least 12GB RAM, should be on Nintendo next hardware

You lot haven't tempered your expectations enough. It's not realistic to expect Nintendo and Nvidia to outperform 10 year old consoles with weak CPUS (even though they did with Switch 1), it's unfathomable to imagine them using upscaling tech to boost the system's visuals (even when they've been using upsampling techniques in their own games). They don't care about multiplatform ports (even though that's been a major boon to the Switch's library). Nintendo will go out of their way to design a weaker system even if it's more expensive to supply, because they hate you and love 24 hours of battery life. Ignore everything else suggesting otherwise.

Mediatek isn’t using Nvidia GPU in their SoC, they are using a dGPU

They announced this year they would use Nvidia IP for automotive infotainment:

Then there were claims that partnership could extend to smartphone and laptop chips:

All of these announcements/rumors happened this year but they probably did a lot of research before-hand last year.
It kinda lines up with the rumors of devkits being recalled and a Nintendo project being canceled.

Mediatek being at the forefront of mobile tech:
And probably also 5G and Wifi, they would be a far better partners than Nvidia for Nintendo, if they integrate Nvidia's IP right.

Nvidia are focused on their datacenter/GPUs businesses, they may want to license their IP for mobile, that's also why they wanted to buy ARM.
Mediatek is investing in mobile AI and RT:
A partnership with Nvidia makes a lot of sense.

Nvidia, Mediatek, Nintendo and others could be rallying behind a single software stack and framework, instead of each developing their own chips.

We out here bois

Less than 1GB. Like 800MB?
I can't quickly pull up the interviews, but early dev interviews gave conflicting figures, between 3.2GB to 3.5GB available to games IIRC. So your 800GB sounds right.

Maybe someone who has worked on Switch games can chime in and clarify

Edit: Found references of 800GB for OS in the comments section of this Nintendo Life article talking about Emily's report on Switch. There's references to the 3.2GB available for games.
