I don't agree, Super Mario Bros Wonder is a continuation of collab between EPD10 and EPD8, Super Mario RPG appears to be developed by Grezzo and the princess peach game looks like it is being developed by Good Feel.

We are here at the start of Week 4 for the Direct Speculation thread where September finally begins and things have heated up in a big way as we are staring down the Super Mario Wonder Direct today! Sadly I won't be able to join y'all watching Mario live, but I'm super excited to see what will be revealed there and I will be adding the archive to the OP ultimately for easy access! Of course the big news here as we begin Week 4 is that any of the next three weeks of this thread could very well be our last! If we get word from insiders and leakers that we are on the eve of a Direct announcement, the second big thread event will kick off the night before so please look forward to that! But for now, a quick update on the other big thread event as we do have our first challenger with their prediction coming up for the LEGENDARY SPECULATOR CHALLENGE! If you are #teamfirstweek please lend @smoothies your energy as they are putting both their avatar and title on the line in predicting a Direct announcement on Tuesday September 5th at 6:00 AM for a Direct that will air on Wednesday September 6th at 6:00 AM (US West Coast time). I am prepared to hand out avatars for all 14 challengers, but I do hope at least one of you will win! One last announcement for the thread before moving on to our Week 4 weekly question, is that we will be getting a new poll sometime tomorrow on Friday my time so you have at least 24 hours to get your last votes in or shuffle them around.

Ok and now it's finally time for the next weekly question! With TGS approaching quickly, this question feels right to drop now!

Week 4 – What anime or licensed game would you like to see announced at the next Direct?

I'll pick two here myself, I'd love to see a Bocchi The Rock themed rhythm game (paired with a season 2 anime announcement!) and a new Star Wars Rouge Squadron game or a collection of the old ones. I'd forever like to see of course a new Magia Record console JRPG too haha. Maybe the new Madoka movie will increase the chances lol. Excited to see what y'all pick :)
I mean, everyone and their uncle is convinced a Superman game simply cannot exist where both stakes are high while also being fun. I beg to differ, but I do believe it needs to be a company that has the resources and team members to capitalize on a game that focuses almost exclusively on gameplay more than story, and doesn't need to rush to tie into a movie/TV show.

Whoever would take the lead on that project, I would keep eyes wide open on the development and marketing cycle behind it.

One day I will see this appear (fan-made obviously 😭credit to u/Jack0Bear who posted this on the r/NintendoSwitch subreddit. Not sure if they made this originally but this is where I found it)
u6yyuqpmvew41.jpg
One day 😭 That game has the best chance now to get not only a re-release and the justice it deserves to be seen as a classic, but also a chance to bring back the planned final boss sequence against General Scales that we all deserved but had to be cut for development timelines.

Plus it just looks so pretty when upscaled to HD on emulators. God, I'm salivating just thinking about what could be achieved if this came to Switch 2 with DLSS built-in to bolster its already impressive graphics.

I was just talking with a friend of mine last night about how she's hunting down a copy of Gundam Wing: Endless Duel for SNES, and with that fresh in my mind I'd love a new 2D Gundam fighting game.

A Trigun cel shaded Red Dead -esque open world or a Last Of Us esque Monster adaptation traveling over Europe hunting a terrifying serial killer
okay this sounds rad as hell

The exact timing is hard to pin down, though I'd point out that Sakurai's Youtube channel is probably going to wrap up in the next month or so. I doubt he'd use the channel itself for promotion of a new project, but the timing would align if he's planning to showcase his next project soon
Sakurai's channel is wrapping up?? Huh?

This list is so weird. It doesn't have all of the OG 8 since Kirby and Yoshi aren't there, but it does have the OG unlockables. No Marth or Pit, but it's got Famicom ROB, Wolf, and Terry. A lot of 90s characters, but then there's Rosalina, Olimar, and Bayonetta. Also most of the Pokémon are there

The Pokemon Gameboy games are coming to NSO; the reason RBYGSC were taking so long is because they were retrofitting them with amiibo compatibility

He hasn't announced anything about it, last week he put up a new introduction video for the channel using footage from videos uploaded over the past year or so

He's also been going through every game he's directed in order, and he's done videos on all of them except Smash Ultimate

Something I forgot to bring up. Sakurai has stated he is slowing down his video update to 2 videos a week from late June until "at least late August."

"As for my program, from now on, at least until the end of August, I plan to slow down the pace to about twice a week. I think that it is not difficult to imagine if you are a person who makes such a video, but editing is hard after all..."
His video output is still only 2 for this week, so we're entering September with his video output still being 2 a week.
I don't know how much it means, but I do find it interesting that it's happening when all of the restocks are happening.

Yoshi hasn't been restocked in a long time for some reason, and Pokemon tend to be restocked only for Smash (Pokemon games don't have Amiibo functionality except I think Pokken DX). They stocked the Pokemon Smash line for Sephiroth and Kazuya.
Pit, Dark Pit, and Palutena have yet to be restocked after all of this time, at least since Ultimate launched. It's strange.

What the hell is the "Mario C-team"?

Good lord I have never seen someone bend over backwards so hard to be right about something before. Just admit the "light second half of 2023" sources were incorrect.

Just had a couple random thoughts about Smash Amiibos that wouldn’t involve software updates:
  • Nintendo Selects time? If we’re finally getting a budget re-release lineup Smash would probably be an obvious inclusion
  • If not Nintendo Directs, then maybe an Ultimate Ultimate edition that includes both Fighter Passes on the cart
  • Fighters Passes added to NSO Expansion Pack

I could see Nintendo Selects finally showing up in the Switch's 7th year, especially if Switch 2 is due to drop soon.

Fighters Passes is definitely not coming to NSO as others have expanded on, just due to the licensing nightmare of Sega/Capcom/Square/SNK/Microsoft/Disney and whoever else would need a cut of the NSO subscription pie. SSBUltimate-r edition I feel might run into the same roadblocks, but at least there's a chance the licensing could be strictly limited to new physical sales of the game.

  • I've been looking at when they've restocked Wii U Amiibo. While some Amiibo lines were still launching and had massive stock problems, the pattern still stayed roughly the same when it came to things in a big wave. They didn't restock any Mario or Zelda Amiibo when those got added to the Nintendo Selects line. Mario Party 10 and Wind Waker for example. They also haven't done restocks for any deals and such before, so it's unlikely to be for that.
    • -April 2015: Some Smash Line Restock (Mewtwo's Release) [Same month]
-June 2015: Shulk Amiibo Restock (Xenoblade X Reveal) [Same month]
-June 2015: Some Smash Line Restock (Ryu, Lucas, and Roy's Release, 3DS Console Bundle) [Same month]
-Summer 2015: SMB Mario and Bowser Restock (Mario Tennis Ultra Smash Reveal) [Same month - 2 months after]
-August 2015: Some Smash Restock (Smash DLC release) [Within a 2 month window at most]
-September 2015: Some Smash Line Restock (Smash DLC Release) [Same Month]
-December 2015: Some Smash Line Restock (Final Smash Presentation) [Same Month]
-August - November 2016: Rare Amiibo Restock, Smash + Golden Mario (Nintendo caught up with the Rare Amiibo demands and finally found balance around this time)
    • This list doesn't contain restocks they announced on social media with nothing directly tied to it.
This list has some general timeframes. It was really hard to find the exact dates for the Wii U restocks and when they happened.
If it were for Nintendo Selects, they would have announced the line on August 28th. There's no reason for them to hold off unless it has to do with something Smash specifically, at least historically.
  • It would be weird to have a bundle of 2-year-old content only now for some reason without anything new. Pikmin 1 + 2 came with Pikmin 4, for example. We can assume similar things would happen if they made an Ultimate bundle.
  • They haven't done restocks for any NSO inclusions, nor did they do one for when the Octo Expansion got added. Very unlikely.
  • If it were for Nintendo Selects, we would also be getting general Mario wave restocks on top of Zelda, Kirby, etc. There are only 3 Zelda ones being restocked.
  • Rosalina and Boo came and were related to the big Mario Wonder Direct they did (SMB Line is still using the stock they got on Mar10 day, so they didn't restock everything). If it were for the Nintendo Selects, everything would of been for it.

TLDR: Wii U restocks point to it being unrelated to Nintendo Selects since they didn't restock any line for the brand last time.

I think they could make the (deep breath) “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Switch Online Plus Expansion Pack Fighters Pass,“ for NSO+EP subs that just has Pyra/Mythra, Piranha Plant, Byleth and Min-Min. Like a lil sampler of the DLC that they wouldn’t need to pay out the nose for.

hey, if they were to start updating Ultimate again, can they do me a favor and nerf Steve and Pikachu while buffing Sephiroth's weight ?

:D

Actually yeah, that would be pretty smart. Gets around the licensing restrictions and keeps people engaged just enough if they haven't shelled out for the DLC yet

Especially because at this point Piranha Plant is only available on his own, he’s not in either pass, so this would give folks a way who don’t want to buy him (he’s not the most enticing character to most people, I’m sure) a way to fill out their roster.

Actually, speaking of a hypothetical Switch Nintendo Selects line, what games do you think Nintendo would/should include?

Personally, I'm thinking stuff like BotW, Mario Odyssey, MK8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, Smash Ultimate, Pokémon Let's Go, DKC Tropical Freeze, Kirby Star Allies, FE Three Houses, maybe Xenoblade 2 etc. could be part of a Selects lineup.

Holy shit 🤣

I'm a huge fan of Dring-posting, but I will say that 40% of Nintendo's second half is light.
Yeah I know that as far as the overall lineup goes, it's nothing particularly huge. What gets me is he went from "nothing after Zelda" to people calling him on that and suddenly it was "I meant nothing big after Zelda" to "2D Mario doesn't count as big so I'm still right," and in between all that I saw people and publications (before the June Direct) saying they were excited to see what games Nintendo had and Dring would comment or quote tweet them with "Nope" and "Nothing's coming" and stuff like that. Like he didn't just say "I heard there's a light H2" and leave it at that, he's been actively trying to push people into believing this position he dug his heels in on.

From the very beginning when he first posted the "no games post-Zelda" thing, I was asking how he could be so confident in knowing Nintendo's inner workings that he'd actually be aware they weren't working on games. And now I'm wondering how he can be so confident in knowing Nintendo's inner workings that he can comment on what "level" of team is working on the next main Mario game, thus giving him the insight to comment on its quality, size, and sales potential after just one trailer. It just seems like incredible arrogance to me, coupled with wanting people online to see him as some sort of authority.

Even though I'll admit the rest of the year probably doesn't look like much to people who aren't Mario fans. But that'd be like me saying H2 2019 had nothing big because I'm not a Pokémon fan. 🤷‍♂️

Anyway sorry 😅

With the return of the NSO Game Vouchers, I doubt a budget/lower-priced line would ever make a return. That said, let’s posit they did bring the line back.

The only games they’d include are games that are no longer selling. For example, MK8 Deluxe continues to sell millions and millions, at full price. They have zero incentive to lower it. Also, assuming this line includes branded physical cartridge releases, they would not include any games of a particular file size because 16 GB Switch carts are expensive. So the games I could see Nintendo including in a Switch Selects line are:

ARMS
Kirby Star Allies
Sushi Striker
Captain Toad
Astral Chain (maybe)
Fire Emblem Warriors
Hyrule Warriors
Link’s Awakening
Paper Mario The Origami King
Pikmin 3 Deluxe (but not for a while as to not take sales away from 4)
Splatoon 2 (not for a while as to not takes sales away from 3)
Super Mario Maker 2
Yoshi’s Crafted World
Tokyo Mirage Sessions
1 2 Switch
WarioWare Get It Together
Pokken Tournament

Basically: Games you don’t hear about anymore.

Some of those Smash line restocks may be for related game news/releases even without amiibo support, though the range of franchises there is so wide that it's a bit much to try to apply all of them

Mario - Wonder
Zelda - whatever the other Zelda stuff is for
Star Fox - idk
Metroid - Prime 4
Pokémon - SV expansion
Pikmin - 1+2 physical
F-Zero - rumored GX port
Sonic - Superstars
Mega Man - Taisen?
Mother - idk
Pac-Man - idk
R.O.B. - MK8DX DLC char?
Final Fantasy - VIIR2
Bayonetta - idk, maybe another Platinum game
Fatal Fury - City of the Wolves
Banjo-Kazooie - idk

eh, that's more than I expected

Alright. September 5th is the first day we can get a direct announcement!
I was going to make a joke about changing your date to September 12th, but if Nintendo truly only released the Wonder Direct to get ahead of its appearance at Nintendo Live, then I believe there's a small chance there could actually be a Direct announced for 9/6 lol.

I'm still feeling gung ho about the 13th though because...patterns...which have led me astray almost every time. I guess I'm stubborn haha

If someone came and told me "Hey man, trust me, there ain't shit coming to Switch this year, no big games anyone will care about" and then a Super Mario RPG remake was announced for this year, I would punch that guy in the dick.

For me there's no doubt stuff like Detective Pikachu and a second WarioWare can reasonably be seen as the 'light' part of the line up. They're even lower priced releases to boot, and the overall line up (right now) lacks the franchise variety we normally see. The comparison to 2019 doesn't hold up for me, because you had two new IP, Zelda, Fire Emblem, and Luigi's Mansion 3 as well as Pokemon that year. But that's to be expected because 2019 was the third 'second half' of the Switch's life and this is the seventh.

When you've got Pikmin 4 and a cult classic remake either side of a genuine Nintendo heavy hitter in Wonder, plus DLC for Splatoon 3 and Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, it's impressive in light of how much Nintendo's output would normally have dropped off by now. Even more impressive on the back of Wonder sounding so fresh and creative.

But I absolutely get where you're coming from, because Dring even pushed back on Mario being big with stuff like that "I heard it's from the C team" comment. Either the man has terrible sources, or he's just trying to salvage something from his own repeatedly wrong commentary. The first mainline 2D Mario in a decade, launching to the biggest ever installbase a mainline Mario has had to sell into, in the year Super Mario's move adaptation is the second highest grossing film of the year, is fucking big. Embarrassing that he can't admit he either got things wrong, or had bunk sources.

Not sure why they would do that for games that are still selling like crazy like Mario Kart, Smash, etc.

They need to do it more for games that have fallen off sales wise, which you did mention several of like DKC, FE, Xenoblade 2 etc. I'd also add Dread and Astral Chain.

I’m gonna go with the 13th for now since Pyoro liked it. Though that doesn’t fit him mo of him seeing YouTube videos loaded because he wouldn’t see that this far ahead.

That September 2017 direct I remember being alright. It had Doom announced coming the holiday and Wolfenstein was also announced.

I wonder if Nintendo EPD8 has no deadline for the next 3D Mario? EPD10 wasn't given a timeline for Wonder, so maybe the same thing happened to the 3D Mario team.
Cause wonder was going to be a end of life game for the Switch from the start so they probably were given as much time as they could if Dev started a while ago. I feel with 3d mario they really want it to be around launch window for Switch 2 so most likely will have a deadline
