I know Nintendo Live isn't a press event, but I still think it's so strange they may have a Direct right after it.
Nintendo Life is just a way to enjoy Nintendo games, i doubt Nintendo will drop a bombshell at the event, they are fully focused on marketing Switch holiday games and it final games

Assuming the 'second half 2024' is accurate as the hardware launch period, I would guess at a timeline something like this:

  • next Nintendo Direct is September 6th at the earliest, September 20th at the latest: focuses on Switch games launching October 2023 through March 2024
  • Nintendo Direct in February 2024 is still Switch-only; announces and focuses on Switch titles launching through summer 2024
  • Nintendo confirm new hardware ahead of their fiscal year results in early May 2024, potentially through a reveal video like the og Switch reveal; they include the system in their fiscal year forecast for the 24/25 year and announce more details coming soon
  • Nintendo Direct in June 2024, ahead of Nintendo's 84th AGM, exclusively concentrates on software for the new console; launch date and price confirmed
  • Nintendo Direct Mini in July 2024 for Switch 1 titles
  • hardware launches in September or October; September Direct is for both systems but the bulk of first-party news relates to new hardware

Wasn't the switch 1 the only Nintendo home platform not to launch around the holidays, I wonder if it was supposed to come out holiday 2016 but got delayed for some reason. Anyways looks like we are back on track with the switch 2

God I am so ready for the absolute flame wars that are gonna ensue when Nintendo hasn’t revealed the new system by February and just decide to host a general direct on Switch games instead
I remember this happened during the "announce the NX" year when they posted a 3DS Direct instead.

Most of nintendo's handhelds were released during spring/summer

I'm having a hard time finding proof but I have heard it said a few times in the Future Hardware thread that Switch was intended to launch holiday 2016 but they were waiting for the BotW port to be done.

Yeah I could’ve sworn someone said they wanted it to come holiday 2016. Nintendo didn’t pick March 2017. They prefer holidays for home consoles like they always have.

What if we are getting an early September direct. Nintendo is no stranger to announcing directs after an American holiday. They’ve done it in past September directs.

Labor Day is September 4th. The direct announcement will be on September 5th (Tuesday) and the direct is on Wednesday the 6th.
My September 13th theory crumbling and losing the avatar bet would go down a lot smoother if the result was getting a Direct one week earlier than expected, instead of one week later 😅

So uh, I’ve been out of this forum for like 1-2 months, is the general consensus of September’s direct being a two-way between next week and the week of TGS?
Seems to be the consensus, yeah. Most people seem to think they won't do a direct the same week that Pokemon DLC drops, which would mean ruling out the week of the 11th. So assuming Nintendo once again wants their September direct out of the way before TGS starts, that would mean the options are next week or the first half of TGS week (since TGS starts on a Thursday).

Assuming they don't get wild and do it on September 1st (i.e. this Friday), that is.

summer of next year(around the E3 season), is when i predict/expect Nintendo would reveal it next hardware, the february/march Direct is gonna be the final Nintendo Direct fully focused on Nintendo Switch, after that is gonna be a Nintendo Direct focused on both Switch and it sucessor or mostly/only on Nintendo next hardware.
Summer's too late if they want to hit a holiday 2024 release, I expect it either in January or a bit after the February direct in the first half of spring

Nah. That's plenty of time. We only really saw details on what the switch first year lineup was, as well as the release date and pricing details and such, barely 2 months before the release, and the actual console was first shown on October 20th, about 4.5 months before the hardware released. If they're releasing it November, showing it in June would make it even a longer cycle than the switch had.

with how spread social media is, Nintendo could show the reveal trailer for Switch sucessor next summer, that everyone will be eyeying Nintendo

I'm really late to making my first post for this board, but I just wanted to say I'm just really excited to see what Nintendo and Nintendo's partners have in-store during this Nintendo Direct!! :)

One thing I don’t see discussed much with regards to next year being our likely Switch 2 reveal that I want to pose a question about is:

Do y’all think we hark back to 2017 Nintendo revealing a bunch of stuff that is years out? Or was that “please buy the Switch after our last console bombed” levels of desperate and they’ll still keep their cards close to their chest even when the next console is revealed because they’re more confident?

2017 saw the annoumcement of Metroid Prime 4 (still not out), Bayonetta 3 (2022), SMTV (2021), Fire Emblem Three Houses (2019). Even stuff that came out in 2018 like Octopath Traveller still felt like a longer-than-usual Nintendo marketing cycle.

I really think it could go both ways. I can see them being less desperate than they were coming off the Wii U and maybe they have a killer launch lineup and don’t feel that they need to reveal stuff that’s a while out. But at the same time, setting the stage for a hardware launch and revealing games that are years out makes more people confident in buying in because they’ll know there’s gonna be constant support. Like, I think it’s actually a reasonable take that we could get a “now in development” teaser for the next Zelda less than a year into the Succ’s life.

I think you still show games years out during the first year to give confidence to buyers regardless of your last system being great. And maybe it’ll come more from third parties than Nintendo themselves. Metroid Prime 4 was truly a game not coming for a minimum of 3 years even if it didn’t get a reboot. Fire Emblem did have a delay. Bayonetta 3 was also super early like Prime 4.

I don’t know if we’ll get Zelda announcement in year one. I think it’ll come more from the great third party support the system will have from the beginning.

Hard to say. I think they will probably focus on 2024 and early 2025 titles, I am not expecting much more than that. Maybe a short cinematic confirming Mario Kart 9 if they can't get it out within the first couple of quarters since that's an automatic system seller. Besides the obvious 3D Mario, I'm not sure what else they would announce that would be a big deal that they could get out in the first 16ish months of the Switch 2. Splatoon 4? New Animal Crossing?

Zelda feels like something they'll wait to announce in 2025 if not later. Maybe with a brief shot of gameplay like that clip of Link looking over the hills in BOTW.

Yes, I do think Nintendo will reveal more of Prime 4.
😏
sorry

Okay seriously

I don't think those reveals were just desperation after WiiU bombing, I think it was also part of them trying to shake off the "kiddie" image that had been placed on them for years. Especially Bayo3 and Prime4, which felt to me like they were trying to say "Look, we're making games for core players!!" (as opposed to just "look, we have games!"). Which is now a position they don't have to convince anybody of.
So for that reason, I kinda expect Nintendo to continue playing reveals close to the chest. The Switch has momentum, it has tons of IPs (not just Nintendo ones this time) and lots of brand recognition, and I bet that'll carry over to the Sw2tch. They won't have to show big action games that are way way out just to prove their system can have action games, they've proven it already.

It’s important for any console to have a healthy mix of immediate future games and long term prospect games. The latter gives people stuff to dream about and more passionately anticipate. I don’t expect Switch 2 to be terribly different in that regard.

I think E3 (or whatever equivalent) 2025/June Direct 2025 could be when the next Zelda is first shown. It matches up with BotW spring 2017 release -Tears summer 2019 reveal timeframe, and we’ll be a bit into the life of the Succ at that point, and probably post-3D Mario and Prime 4 as well, so they’ll probably want another big SP action-adventure title announced.

Animal Crossing really should be something they should try to squeak out in the launch window, same with Mario Kart. It’ll be years since each of those had full-blown console entries. Splatoon can probably chill for a bit while those two carry Nintendo’s online/GAAS games.

Speaking of that, the only thing I’m scared to even begin to predict is Smash, have absolutely no idea how they’ll handle that. Both in terms of what the game will be (Ultimate Deluxe or something brand new) and when it’ll release.

With Gamescom week behind us we are now entering the start of September or Rayman week if you prefer. Definitely the most interesting thing that could pop up any day is that mystery game/event/preview from the Nintendo New York store last week. My bet is firmly on some kind of Mario Wonder preview which to me points to a later Direct if we see it this week. However, it’s entirely possible the preview happened early that will then release immediately following an early Direct, not this, but the following week. I’m still firmly in the camp they’ll avoid Pokemon DLC week for any show even if the available now theory is plausible.

The mystery game is definitey Wonder

Smash is pretty predictable in terms of release I think. Both Wii U and Ultimate released within roughly 2 years of their consoles launching. So assuming Switch 2 is holiday 2024, I’d guess holiday 2026, maybe it slips into early 2027 at the latest. Like Mario Kart it’s a system seller so they aren’t gonna take too long to get one out.

I also am guessing 2D Metroid will come out around 2025, with Dread selling well there is incentive to keep those games coming.

Early September would be great because I cba getting hyped or attempting to guess at what gets revealed. I'm ready for a no expectations, chilled out Direct experience.

I've decided to join Team September 3rd - 9th. If press and influencers have recently received ample time with Wonder, I don't think Nintendo would just let them sit on their impressions for another three weeks.

You guys really need to embrace the "Wonder info before the Direct" lifestyle, everything just fits so nicely.

Hands on preview this week, playable build at Nintendo Live this weekend, and Direct right before TGS a few weeks later.

I hope you’re right or I’m going to be 😡 at you.

I honestly haven't been around in this thread as much as I usually am, but to be honest time passes way faster not constantly thinking about a Direct.

with Nintendo Switch been a sucefull console, i dont think Nintendo will reveal some games for it sucessor, that is gonna release years after it anouncement, Nintendo did this because Wii U was a failure, and they want to show everyone, Switch is gonna have excelent games, so to not worry about Switch having long droughts of games

I just want to see Prime 4. This is the last shot I’m giving it. If it’s not here then I’m fully on board of seeing it at the Switch 2 reveal presentation. We’ll see a snippet of it in the Switch 2 reveal trailer.

I think I’m in agreement here with Prime 4. If it isn’t shown in September the timeline just becomes too tight where it’d make little sense for it not to be cross gen.
