StarFox will always get my first vote.

But in this age where Armored Core 6 may lead to a possible "renaissance" of mecha games? Can we get Custom Robo to come back?

Perhaps not Monster Hunter, but there is something a number of Rise's leads also worked on together before they moved onto that title.

Koji Oda, Masakazu Eguch, Ryota Fujii, Takayoshi Miyake? They all worked on Mega Man 11 together.

I was one of those that imagined that after they were done with Rise, and with another team assuming most of their duties for the expansion, Sunbreak, that they would come back to Mega Man afterward. It just happened to be that Taisen leaking proposed an interesting possibility of what they could be doing next for MM.
Them saying it'd be something that would sell millions made me ditch Mega Man, Ace Attorney and etc of the likely candidates tbh.

But what's that Taisen thing? Is it a codename for the next Mega Man? Any clue on what it'd be?

Nintendo's gonna give us something big that they want to see people hyping about and my gut is feeling like there'll be a prime 4 reveal here.

Well I gotta say Nintendo technically could steal all spotlight by saying "tune in X PM for the first look on Metroid Prime 4" and have people at NY Store for reactions, but why not show it on the Direct instead? It'd avoid leaks as well.
Gene's reply makes me think there may actually be something happening

If I had to guess, probably Mario Wonder previews.
Yeah, that person saying the game he played was so much fun made me think of Wonder as a no brainer.
They're going for a super short reveal to release cycle and waiting until it's literally 1 month away to show a second trailer looks like something... Not very smart.
They might've had hands on previews for influencers and media outlets at Gamescom and they're under NDA until a second trailer drops and they can release their footages and impressions.
maybe a direct next week just before nintendo live?
Would be the ideal scenario imho. Would make for a new trailer for Wonder to come 2 months before release(then another trailer the month before and overview a couple weeks before as well as previous). Also would make for a 7 month reveal to release for MP4 #believe. Oh and for a quick new game coming in September reveal to release (like RingFit).
Why would Nintendo be showing something off to influencers (god I hate that word) ahead of time rather than just a hype drop in a Direct?

Unless maybe they're filming something like all of them playing a multiplayer game together for a trailer or something?
Yeah, they wouldn't reveal a first party game that isn't already shown behind closed doors just for it to leak weeks before their intended showing to the public.
A lot of influencers recording some multiplayer gameplay sessions of Super Mario Bros. Wonder for them to put on a TV commercial for the game after a new trailer is out(and that being the game shown behind closed doors) makes sense to me.

Makes sense. I was just thinking that maybe they‘d hold something in NYC to follow-up the Gamescom discussion, like a talk or additional details or something. Obviously I have no idea what it would be, but thought maybe they would have a North American counterpart? I don’t know, you’re probably right lol
Don't get me wrong though, I love the idea of them showing Nintentubers something neat so they can help with the hype, I just strongly doubt anyone outside of dev space is gonna see anything (hardware or software) until a Direct or some equivalent.

Wishing this masterpiece (remake) into existence!

yesssssssssssssssssssssss
are those the sprites from that one fanmade fighting game?

Not to sure I just googled gifs for Chrono Trigger 😆

Always Star Fox.

Not sure if that counts as "untapped" but it sure feels like it does.

Actually now that I think about it, a truly untapped game I'd love to see make a comeback is Excitebike.

Also I'm assuming your question is more about Ninty franchises, because if not then I have a laundry list of Sega and Squenix properties 😅
100% we need to see Star Fox, Punch Out, and Excitebike. They might not sell as well as Mario, but they're leaving potential money on the table.

Maybe this is far-fetched, but could it possibly have to do with this?

https://www.startmenu.co.uk/home/report-nintendo-confirm-new-hardware-end-of-august-switch-2

I wouldn’t count on it. The only way they show new console hardware in 2023 is if it’s going to be available in volume for the holiday season in 2023. I think it’s too late in the year for that, and no way they announce something in September that ships in March and devastates their holiday sales.

Nintendo's gonna give us something big that they want to see people hyping about and my gut is feeling like there'll be a prime 4 reveal here.

I think this is rumored to be a third party potential exclusive, most likely whatever the mystery Capcom Q4 game is (probably Resident Evil).

It is that third party game that Nintendo distributing, also shown at Gamescom. Since it's the only game shown behind closed doors at Gamescom, this is unlikely to be a first party title.

It's more and more getting likely that this is Monster Hunter. IIRC, press had already seen MH Rise before it got announced in September 2020 Direct. Nintendo had also shown other third party titles to press before getting announced in the past Augusts. I remember people knowing about Divinity 2 and Cities Skylines.

Why Monster Hunter and not Resident Evil? Monster Hunter Rise was getting ongoing support for a while and it just got ported to the other consoles recently. It feels like it's too early. Meanwhile, a Resident Evil Switch game has been rumored for years.

Actually could be RE too. RE games also get announced and released in just 7 months. And Nintendo might distribute it. It does fit the bill.

What little we know about "Rockman Taisen" (likely a codename) stems from a mix of the Capcom leak of 2020, the infamous Nvidia leak, as well what Protodude was sharing on Twitter and Era before he mostly scrubbed everything because he didn't want to anger any inside contacts he has at Capcom. It's allegedly the most money that Capcom has ever invested in a Mega Man game (which would still make it more of a mid-tier thing like Monster Hunter Stories), and the Capcom leak made it sound like they want it to sell at least 3 million copies. We still don't have a clear idea of what exactly the game is going to be, though, so any guess is as good as any when you try to derive it from "Taisen"!

That said? I personally think that whatever 3rd party thing Nintendo is possibly hiding behind closed doors (Taisen?) and whatever Capcom is confident will sell "millions" (MH6?) are two different things. But I wouldn't be surprised if both are about ready to be showed off because Capcom's 2024 is looking pretty empty at the moment besides DD2, Kunitsu-gami and the AA collection.

A new Megaman Battle Network would definitely sell mutli million copies. I'm pretty sure BN Collection has passed 1m on Switch alone, that could be a warm up for things to come.

I really believe we will get an updated road map for NSO next month. We almost always get updates in September. Only 2 games left for n64 and those will be out before the year ends. Gameboy is done. GBA has 4 games left I think. So I could see a new roadmap of games for N64 and GB at the direct.

I doubt that Capcom's expected multi-million seller is the same as the third-party game rumored to be distributed by Nintendo. Capcom is a big enough publisher that they could easily handle that themselves, and there's a good chance that game will release on multiple platforms anyway. Nintendo's mystery third-party game reads to me as something more in line with Good Job!, The Stretchers, etc

Honestly, I never pay too much attention to Metroid's lore and story.

Prime 4 can be a "reboot" or something happening many years later and have a plot twist that the Samus you control is a clone of original one or something MSG style crazyness. I don't care about that.
I actually wouldn't say Metroid is particularly plot-heavy, and I'm fine with that. It does have a continuous story throughout, or, rather, a couple continuous stories split between the mainline titles and Prime. While it's not particularly plot-heavy, however, I think care should be taken regarding the plot, lore, and overall story. Handled properly, this can add depth and weight to the individual games. It can lend to the tone and themes.

The way I figure it, Prime 4 can be a "reboot" in that it begins its own story, in line and continuity with the rest of the franchise, that isn't meant to require familiarity with already-existing plotlines. But it should take into account tone and how different decisions work within the confined and larger contexts.

You might not pay attention to the lore and plot and story, but that doesn't mean ignoring that in the creation would be at all a good idea. In fact, this is one property I might argue it would be a poor idea overall.

That said, I also think Metroid can do well to use the larger plot and lore as setup and backdrop, where it does sometimes interact with the happenings in the game and does sometimes alter or push different elements but is rarely the driving factor beyond that.

What I want is:
  • Good exploration, adding more open areas and verticality. Still be like a maze, but something more big and less path connected. It will have shortcuts like elevator or that stuff (like Dread).
  • Better interaction with the environment, like current Zelda games.
  • More fast paced shooter gameplay, not intense action like Doom games but it must be dynamic and fun. Enemies can have various weakness and each fight must be done using the head.
  • Non linear way to progress story, but still various weapons/upgrade to move between areas.
  • Various bosses, add Boss Rush mode.
  • Story doesn't have to be too much deep but it can have some side missions where you explore and learn more about the lore of the series (+ fuel/missile tanks/expansions as rewards).
  • Good visuals and OST.

What else does the community want?
There are definitely some good thoughts in here, though.

  • Good exploration is a must, absolutely. Well-done environmental interaction can play into that.
  • I wouldn't put the focus so much on it being shooter gameplay, though obviously that plays a role. However, mobility and traversal are also, and especially, key, and they tend to play into combat as well. This should all come together as a cohesive package. It can also help alleviate the problem of beam-sponge enemies, where the mobility plays an active role and combat is more of a dance, negating the need to increase the amount of beams adversaries will eat.

It's been discussed some in Metroid threads here, but I think it could be beneficial to have more entirely optional areas, with bosses to fight, lore to add to or entirely shift the player's understanding of the current game's story, powerups that open new opportunities for traversal and combat, et cetera. Imagine if one would just blast through the prime path, but a knowledgeable speedrunner would know to go out of their way into some of this optional content in order to get particular powerups and exploit different shortcuts -- counterinuitive, perhaps, but that's the universe for you.

Sakamoto really ran away from the idea of the Galactic Federation as villains.
That was confirmed to be a translation mistake. It was intended to be that shadow group having it out for Samus.
I don't recall the group being particularly motivated by having it out for Samus, but its nature, if I recall, is somewhat ambiguous still. Regardless, I still think some elements of the Federation as antagonist would still make sense in a post-Fusion world. After all, such a group probably has tendrils in different parts of the military and government, or is working to do so, making them a larger concern than might be indicated, and at this point they could view Samus as an active threat. Maybe we assume the Federation gets sufficient evidence to clear Samus of wrongdoing regarding destruction of their station. Even then -- and I guess really just now after Dread, pushing it out a bit -- becoming the titular Metroid, the last metroid, could put a target on Samus' back from different Federation groups: some distrustful of whatever sort of thing she has become, some wanting to engage in tests and experiments, and so forth.

Even if we don't want to paint the Federation as outright villainous, there's plenty of reason for them to be placed in a more antagonistic role, and the Federation's existence is actually more realized and more interesting that way. And then we can throw in whatever is going on with this group.

Yes, they did have the remake Samus Returns to tease Ravenbeak and his tribe of warrior Chozo, but Prime 4 technically had Federation Force and it's tease of Sylux stealing a Metroid.
If they followup on the 100% ending from Prime 3 or Federation Force is not what matters, but how.
I maintain these endings are 100% superfluous and add nothing to whatever might be in this game. Whatever it is could be done just as well, if not better, without these stingers.

Sylux following Samus at the end of Corruption? It means nothing to the story of the Prime trilogy or to anyone who didn't follow the spinoff material, and it doesn't really have any context to mean anything at all. Any game that tries to follow up on that will still have to introduce it as though the stinger never occured.

Sylux stealing the metroid? If anything comes of that, all we need is the aftermath. Seeing the theft itself doesn't add anything.

But I find I generally have this sort of reaction to such attempts at stringing along a plot -- also to a lot of content that tries to fill in details of a plot or universe that really just don't need to be filled in. It tends to fall flat.

I also think they wan Prime and the main series to stay separate and interact as little as possible so the two teams keep creative freedom.
I'm all for that. It can make the universe and Samus' story feel larger. Not everything needs to be super connected. Just, you know, make sure it's consistent and cohesive.

    Re: Prime 4 story

Metroid Prime 3 was released in 2007. It’s been 16 years since the last story entry. I haven’t played a Prime game besides the first one, but if the story was wrapped up in Prime 3, then Prime 4 could work as a standalone story to try to bring up newcomers, without the need of playing the previous three games. I have a feeling Prime 4 will have a self-contained story that will wrap itself up, but possibly leaving some loose ends for a possible sequel
Yeah, I kind of expect it'll be its own thing, largely unconnected to the earlier Prime games, if there's any distinct connection at all. I still think it likely doesn't need the Prime title at all.

Has Nintendo ever really done cross-gen apart from the occasional Zelda dual release?
You know, it has somehow* become my default thought regarding cross-gen for Switch that it would function differently from in the past, where the separate releases are streamlined into one, which plays on the Switch but includes the data for upgrades when played on the Switch NXT. Essentially, it lowers the amounts of editions that need shipped and stocked in stores, alleviating some potential confusion from purchasers and cleaning up logistics concerns (the trick is signaling what's a dual release). In this both-on-one-cartridge format, there's less reason not to lean more into such a release.

It's probably not going to happen, but that's what I keep defaulting to. Newly released complete editions of games would likely fall under this category, for instance.

I agree with all the above, and have been wondering about WW and TP as well. I used to think releasing them together as a bundle would make sense but the way Nintendo has been handling rereleases lately (with the exception Pikmin, as you pointed out) makes me wonder if they'll be trying to do all these (Prime 2 and 3, WW and TP) as their own separate boxed releases to maximize retail space.
I still think the potential exists for Switch NXT features to be used to help justify individual releases of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, perhaps with these games being released as dual editions as described above. It's not the first time I'm saying it, but one thought I've considered is if the new console allowed another console/screen to be connected, this could be used to bring back the Tingle Tuner which for some unknowable reason was dropped from the version that had a second screen by default, for instance. Also, ray tracing.

i know there are completely different art styles but it's insane how much it feels like out of the three TPHD got the short end of the stick
The Wii U tech demo probably exacerbated this impression, but if this was worked on further, it could also be an explanation for why a solo release could happen.

Everyone will get to play the remake of Zelda 2.
That does seem like the closest equivalent haha.

I finally beat Zelda II last year via NSO with save states and rewind. I’m all good on that game unless a remake is radically different lol.
Since Nintendo has forgotten about Zelda II IntiCreates should just go ahead and release a sprite-based remake of it.
What I'm hearing is that we're getting The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link packaged with an IntiCreates-developed The Legend of Zelda II-II: Link Adventures Again.

In much the same manner of the A Link to the Past and [/i]A Link Between Worlds[/i] release that'll definitely occur.

*I'm pretty sure it's literally because I've had this thought since before the Switch was a thing, but, hey, Nintendo did the cartridge-based hybrid thing this was a part of so they might go ahead with this too.

Is it possible they might just confirm the hardware’s existence without actually showing it off or giving details? Similar to how they announced the “NX” in 2015 but revealed not much more.

Do you have any sources you can link that talk about this rumor? I apparently missed this and the talk that Nintendo is showing something behind closed doors at Gamescom.

Announcing it would be a huge distraction for their last full holiday on the market. They want everyone only thinking about Mario Wonder not new hardware and for any potential buyers to not have any doubts about picking up a Switch this holiday.

It does feel we might get something big for Nintendo tomorrow or early next week. Not a Direct, but some big-ish news thing like a Mario Wonder trailer / preview.

As the resident Capcom fan of the site, I'm not excited at all for the reactions when a new Resident Evil / Monster Hunter / Mega Man game isn't announced. I know what happens when people hype up speculated new releases, and it always ends in disappointment and vitriol cries in Ace Attorney 7

It doesn’t seem right to get a Nintendo direct then a hardware reveal in the same month. I thought if it was coming early 2024 it would be announced in October

Has Nintendo ever really done cross-gen apart from the occasional Zelda dual release?
There's some speculation that the first Animal Crossing was developed concurrently for the N64 and GCN because Miyamoto stated that "communication games" were planned for either one or the other platform to the press a few times. It does track cause they were both released within a year.
