That being said, I am definitely of the mind that we'll at least have digital BC on the thing

There will probably be a resolution jump obtained via DLSS in the docked mode.

DLSS works great on a 200W GPU, but I'm still not sold on it in a low-frequency mobile setting, specially not at 60fps.
If it does work well enough, it could be used in handheld to save battery, negating that advantage in docked.
DLSS requires a lot of data from the game itself. I suspect a lot of games won't even implement it.

We'll have to wait and see but I'm expecting a generic upscaler that works on media that doesn't hit 4K.

1440p or some weird in-between resolution like the Xbox series s sometimes uses like in elden ring
That would be fine by me.

Most TVs nowadays do a very decent upscaling. BotW and TotK look gorgeous on my TV.
I'd be fine with 1080p docked if they use the extra power to improve framerate.

Nintendo still seems to be ramping up their in-person event appearances

Does Nintendo ever clue in indie devs on their next-gen consoles before they release? I feel like for a while only the big publishers get to be in the know. Of course, this is nothing but conjecture, idk how these things work lol.
No I don't think the switch NG will run anything in 4k to be honest
1080p is fine for most things. 1440p would be awesome but I'm not expecting a lot of that either.

I think some Switch games that get remastered will definitely be capable of 4k and I'd bet on that. Native Switch 2 games? Probably not. I do think we get some good resolutions and FPS via the upscaler for select Switch 2 titles. But I don't think the next Zelda will be running at 4k, it's more likely that the next Smash does depending on how much they want to bump up the graphics. Smash has been 1080p 60fps since Wii U Smash.

It really all comes down to if they can make games look much better than Switch games currently do on 4k displays, and I think they can. I think this leap will finally bring the docked experience up to the quality of the portable experience. I'm not too concerned about 4k, I have all the current-gen consoles and a high-end PC, and I pretty much never game in 4k anyway.

Based on how the Switch launch went down, probably a select few were included in earlier devkit waves (including Snipperclips, which was published by Nintendo themselves), but mostly they were among the last to start getting devkits.

Before release, sure.

Before announcement, probably only a select few.

Ultimately, there's always going to be devs that prioritise oomph over performance. So no matter how powerful ReDraketed will end up, don't expect all games to be 60fps.

And i say it's like this even within Nintendo.

I'm writing this while looking at my ultrawide-display with 160Hz and I won't miss a thing when the next Animal Crossing is 30fps again. I hope the next 3D-Kirby will be 60fps, that game has more movement but it was very late in the Switch-lifecycle.

I have the nagging suspicion that Ridge Racer 8 might become a launch title for the new system.

This flew over most people's radar, but Ridge Racer 8 is rumored to be in development (again)...

Looks like Square Enix will switch to the capcom approach :/ less smaller titles. Hope Nintendo sweet talk them into going all in at TGS so we get some sweet AAA games... they better not touch asano

I think Square Enix should just build more Forspoken tier games so downsizing is possible in the future.

Wow. I remember someone had it for Switch on their LinkedIn profile then it was seemingly cancelled.

Indeed. Someone active at Bandai Namco Singapore. That person was also working on a unknown first-person shooter for Switch, which got cancelled too.

backward compatibly dont give sales for Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa is the typical business only thinking of profit.
I love how you judge the guy as if he was new to the company despite the fact he was there since 1994 and has seen pretty much everything since the GB and SNES, if he was chosen as successor, it's probably because everyone knows him. Also he's been president for only a couple years now, and the top people making executive decisions are still people who were at Nintendo even before him.

Yes his cursus is economics more than programming, the point is more like, if he didn't care about Nintendo a slight bit, he could very well just join another company. And if he took cursed drastic decisions, there's still other people to deal with where those decisions could simply not happen.

And I'm not even taking Furukawa's defense, it's just that we don't know much about him in general to properly give opinions about.
Yes he's clearly not trying to be as front facing as Iwata, but that's okay, not everyone has to be just like him.

I don’t know that Asano stuff will go away, but I could easily see Diofield and Harvestella not meeting expectations, and similar products not being greenlit.

Asano's actually one of the few people/teams that constantly make money on games that, i'm sure, not have any big budgets, so that team is definitely safe.

But yeah, stuff like Diofeld or Star Ocean might be done again for a while.

I mean yes CEO of most companies are typically thinking of making profits, that's called capitalism. I can't think of a single company where that isn't the goal ultimately. Some will employ methods were they're operating at a loss (because they can afford it) with the ultimate goal being the market leader and then raising the prices and making a less enticing product because they don't have to try as hard to retain customers (Amazon for example).

Which is also why it's counterproductive to think that backwards compatible is something done out of the kindness of companies hearts rather than an attempt at ensuring a smooth transition of their customer base from one piece of hardware to the next. Third party developers might not like it because their goals is purely selling software while Nintendo needs to move hardware to then focus on software sales.

The reason it worked from wii u to Switch is because the former was a massive failure so the customers who didn't retain their digital/physical libraries from the move to Switch were probably considered an acceptable risk to take. Meanwhile you have over 100 million customers on Switch so it's a lot more dicey to just tell those people to reset their whole library again. You can just look at how Sony went from PS3 to PS4 and then to PS5 where they didn't tell their customer base twice in a row to just deal with the loss of software.

As far as next gen patches, it could go either way. Nintendo could follow Sony lead and offer free and paid next gen patches depending on their whim. But unlike Sony they have never been a company focused on selling "visuals" on a technical aspect like sony does with their marketing so I doubt it'd be as effective.

it's nonsensical drivel after one trailer.

Dring's comments also really don't deserve much attention. He's not a serious person, I'm sorry. At this point I care more about what Michael Pachter has to say about Nintendo.
DAMN…
I detect no lies there!!

Ridge Racer you say?

fun fact: this clip is from a newly discovered 1080p recording of Sony's 2016 E3

Ridge Racer 8 can be a good day 1 console exclusive* from Bandai-Namco Studios.

*Though I think it can also be a cross-gen game.

As I said various times, I think it should be a strong move that Nintendo tries to get at least 1 NG exclusive (not available at current Switch) from all mayor third parties during first 6 months (late 2024-early 2025). Some examples..

EA: Madden, NHL, Star Wars Jedi FO/S
Ubisoft: Assasins Creed Red/Mirage, Avatar, Star Wars..
Activision-Blizzard: COD
Warner: Suicide Squad (if it doesn’t flop)
Bandai-Namco: Ridge Racer 8
Square-Enix: FF XIV/V
Capcom: Street Fighter VI
SEGA: Yakuza

Nintendo has never charged for next gen enhancements. I doubt they'd start now. It isn't a new concept to Nintendo, the only new thing is being able to distribute them over the air as patches. I would expect an Xbox approach, a single SKU for cross gen and enhanced games, with free updates for first party titles, and third parties told they can do what they want, whether that's dual entitlement with two SKUs, a single SKU they hike the price of, or including it with DLC. My expectations are firmly that the Indigo Disk will require you to pay to access the location and that's it, just how Sword and Shield was. Any performance or visual updates to the base game distributed to every copy along with the new Pokémon models, just as usual. Only this time that includes a new generation of console. Pokémon DLC replaced the "upper version" concept. This is not the first time an "upper version" has had cross gen enhancements, only this time they can distribute it as an update.

(And I also think that any discussion that says backwards compatibility might not be there isn't worth having, when it'll be there, Game Cards and all.)

I wonder if Microsoft are waiting for NG Switch to launch to distribute the next gen version of Minecraft, so they can do it all at once.

Assuming the 8'' screen rumors are true, I think it's safe to also assume it'll be 1080p.

If we can't do 4K docked, what would be the target resolution then? Same as handheld?
Switch's 720&1080 split would be most analogous to a Redacted 1080&1620 split. But in a DLSS world this is all much less meaningful.

Have they had any? Other than the Virtual Console Wii->WiiU thing they charged for?

If the next Switch only has digital BC, what are the chances that there will be a way to allow you to download a digital version, if you own the physical version?

Zero.

But that's okay, i'd actually see them not doing any BC before they come up with only enabling BC for digital stuff.

now this is a good reason why we need ray tracing. Zelda has a lot of light emitters but no shadows and the SSAO doesn't take into account said emitters

Disappointing. I only cared about their lower budget games. So, no more octopath or triangle strategy? Ehhh

I don't believe at all that it could happen on the next Switch.

For next next, it's not completely out of question though, but they could always make an reader accessory if they want to offer full BC with OG.

Granting access to a download version would only happen if it's something like "use this accessory or old console to validate you still own it every X days". Otherwise it could be easily exploited and Nintendo won't just let that be.
