StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

@fwd-bwd correct me if I am wrong, but we also got a rumor coming from the East about a reveal being planned between August and the end of the year? The "leaker" was pretty assertive iirc.

A summer announcement makes absolutely no sense. Grubb might just have a bad source. They're not announcing it before Super Mario Bros Wonder comes out.
People really have a low knowledge of business processes (nothing against you or others ;))

Did it hurt the PS4 sales and TLOU 2 when the PS5 was ready to launch 4 months later snd being announced a year and a half prior to that?

Yeah the DLC confuses me. I don't get why they're extending the life of 8D so much instead of making and releasing 9. But hey, I dunno what they have up their sleeve.
I feel like they know how big of a user base they have with 8D, and so they want to make as much money off of them as possible before they release a new Mario Kart on the next console. Because of course the next Mario Kart will sell well, but who's to say it'll sell as much as 8?

Not only that, but I think it been a fairly easy way to artificially beef up their calendar and keep people engaged with the series, and Nintendo as a whole.

I think the summer grub reveal is at the report/ August is Summer and in roughly 24 hours we will have that. I think reveal might just be Nintendo switch ng releasing H1 2024 with more news coming please be excited. Mario peeking through curtain take 2!

I'm surprised, I thought Mario wonder would be the focus of the coming month, and that one should not expect anything switch 2 related before its release.

Wasn’t PS5 “announced” as part of an interview close to when their end of year financials were due?

It wasn’t like a blockbuster announcement style thing which would rack up millions of views on YouTube or whatever.

Honestly, I’d be surprised if Nintendo referenced the new console this year and I personally think we’ll hear a couple of lines early next year (end of financial year) before a proper reveal between May and June.

Would be nice to be wrong but ultimately it doesn’t really matter if they confirm it or not since they’re obviously working on something and it won’t change when we actually see it.

I would not be surprised if we get actual time-plan of switch ng in fiscal report and reveal on the same route as switch. Nov trailer , janauary reveal of features console etc. Release April/H1 2024.

If they didn't announce it at the full fiscal year earning report back in May, then I highly doubt they will here.

broke: Switch BC on [redacted]
woke: Wii U BC on [redacted]

more context though is that they put the online play of MK8 and Splatoon 1 on maintenance since March 2, 2023 presumably due to this vulnerability

Exactly, my memory is probably not serving me right, but a quick question for those who remember:
We are at a point now where the console is out in more people's hands, and it does not seem that far off that we ll get info on the features, which we got last time in July 2016, with a reveal that followed a few months after.
So does anyone know where we are compared to the NX reveal pattern ? Like when did people start saying devkits were available more widely ? Would be an indication.
I am not a specialist and have no intel whatsoever (hell this forum has become the best source to collect info), but seems to me the recent stream of "leaks" indicates we may not be that far from knowing no? Then announcement and release could happen over the course of 6-9 months.
Nothing about that was "quick". It took a whole-arse sentence to even get to your first question and there was a chain of questions.

We need to kill the statement "quick question", it's the biggest social lie of our time.

I see many speculations of a Sharp LCD panel based on the Mochizuki report. While I can’t say for certain that his report was erroneous, there was no other Japanese new outlet corroborating it (e.g., Nikkei, NHK, Reuters, Asahi, Yumiuri, and TBS); even the Bloomberg Japan published a different report that made no mention of the gaming console deal. Any western articles that I saw were merely quoting Mochizuki. He was the single source of the whole story.

It doesn’t make much business sense either. Last fiscal quarter, Sharp suffered a loss in the magnitude of 220 billion yen ($1.6 billion) most due to its LCD business. The Sharp management stated clearly to their shareholders that the company is transitioning their low-profit mobile display business to other more profitable categories (source):

So I really don’t know how the Mochizuki report came about. On a related note, Panasonic announced on Monday that the company is liquidating its LCD subsidiary (Panasonic Liquid Crystal Display Co.). Japan has not been able to compete in the LCD market for years, and I wonder when Hon Hai Foxconn will stop sinking money into Sharp’s gigantic LCD hole.
It was described in Sharp's initial presentation. (now deleted)
Why do you assume that what Sharp wrote is speculation?

EA getting ready to release the Jedi Duo pack on Switch 2 lol. So will the last gen running current gen be the definitive way to play? Hopefully the game its fixed by then.

You know, i have the first game on PS4. Didn't buy the sequel yet due to some ... reasons ...

I would be willing to double dip on this on ReDraketed, BUT ONLY if they manage to compress it enough to get Jedi Survivor fully on a cart.
About the reasons i mentioned above why i didn't get Survivor on PS5 is simply ... i'm a physical game person, and i don't fancy that almost 75% of the game isn't on the disc, but a mandatory download.

Just no, EA. No.

Grubb said he has been hearing all year (stresses the all year part) that an announcement would be this summer. Almost verbatim. Around 17 minutes in, no timestamp because it's live but yeah.

If Grubb's right about this, and they indeed announce it this year, and do it before the big holiday sales rush is over, there's no way this is going to be a H2 release.

In that case it really might be a March launch, like Switch was.

Good question. I translated that presentation slide back when it was posted by Mochizuki (first bullet point): “starting new product models for VR and gaming applications”

As you can see, it did not specify a “console”. Sharp actually expanded on the above point in their shareholder document to which I linked in my previous post:

This is not to say that it is an impossibility to see a Sharp panel on the Switch NG, only that the info isn’t as solid as Mochizuki made it out to be.

Did I dream that a sharp exec said they had been involved since early trials?

Edit: No I didnt.

Depends on what type of announcement it is.

If it's just 'we're working on new hardware' then it could be late 2024 but if it's 'this is the Nintendo Switch 2 bitches!!!!' it could be first half of 2024.

No, your recollection is correct. Mochizuki reported that. As mentioned above, he’s the only source without any corroboration from other Japanese news outlets, therefore the report’s veracity is unverifiable. I don’t want people to think that I have an axe to grind though, and will stop writing about this subject.

This is almost an urban legend at this point. Very early (pre-2015) plans were supposedly lower -- I don't know where people get 2 GB from, that seems to just be made up -- and Capcom probably did give feedback on that. But by the time Nintendo had actually started developing the Nintendo Switch product that exists today (early 2015), they had already decided on 4 GB.

Capture.png

As you can see here, they had decided on 4 GB RAM at a time when they hadn't even arrived at the final number of 32 GB internal storage.

Something I feel people don't know/remember about the Capcom story is that it was something a Capcom representative informally said during a joint conference talk with Nintendo, where they were highlighting Nintendo's willingness to work with third parties and take feedback. The Capcom person said they had asked for the RAM to be at least 4 GB. Since the RAM was in fact 4 GB, it's a good example for the talk that flatters Nintendo. There is no evidence that Nintendo was going to go with some shockingly low RAM amount until Capcom stepped in and made them change their minds. It's just an anecdote from an early feedback process long before anything was set in stone.
It was going to be 1GB in the pre-TX1 phase of development (INDY/Mont Blanc), but at that point it was positioned as a "3DS successor with TV out" rather than a replacement for both 3DS and Wii U.

H2 doesnt have to mean Holiday, could also mean July etc.

Yeah I can't see them touching their current business until early 2024. They still have extremely strong Switch hardware sales even without a price cut (especially considering it's now into it's seventh year!) and they also have a great line up of first party games for the rest of this year and probably a few first party games for early next year like the Luigi's Mansion 2 Remake remaster, the Peach game and another smaller budget game or maybe the Prime 2 or F Zero GX Remasters ?

If I was purely a business woman and in charge of Nintendo for a second I wouldn't release Switch 2 until late 2024 at the absolute earliest. I'd ride these games out for the rest of the year having a massive holiday spike for Mario Wonder and Mario RPG then do the above for 2024 while releasing the Wind Waker / Twilight Princess Remasters aswell as outsourcing a remake of Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time along with more 3DS, Wii, Wii U ports, remasters, remakes. I'd then announce a price cut to the whole Switch family - Lite now $149, Redbox now $199, OLED now $249 to increase hardware sales which by 2024 would really be starting to slow... maybe lol.

Then boom announce the reveal event for Switch 2 in September, have a big Direct showcasing the launch line up and future 2025/2026 games in October while announcing pricing, hardware options and launch the Switch 2 in November alongside the next 3D Mario followed by the next Mario Kart in March 2025 to keep hardware momentum going post Holiday season. Then probably Splatoon 4 in August, Xenoblade 4 in September, Luigi's Mansion 4 in October and then a full on AAA remake of Pokemon Red/Blue for November to excite current owners and get a massive pop of nostalgia from lapsed Nintendo / Pokemon games!

I could almost guarantee Switch like lifetime sales if it's first year of software is the above along with sticking with the Switch brand, naming it "Switch 2", keeping the same people who currently market it, it having full backwards compatibility, accounts that carry over, and DLSS / RT making very impressive first party visuals possible on Switch 2 along with PS5 and Series third party ports achievable by running them at 480p in mobile mode, 720p in docked then upscaling them to 720p in mobile mode and 1080p-2160p in docked mode.

The future is exciting. I've been waiting on a "Switch Pro" since late 2019 and a "Switch 2" since late 2020! it finally seems like things are happening!! All the best <3

I personally don't need corroboration from another source when a Bloomberg journalist tells me a CEO said something.

Is it possible the third party dev sources for the VGC leak were told by Nintendo to have games ready for holiday 2024 because the console will be out by then but that the console actually launches before that?

With what was said on Last of the Nintendogs about a reveal soon, some stuff just isn't adding up regarding this systems launch.

Does anyone know how much Variable Rate Shading will help Switch 2 with bandwidth/performance? Should it be better for mobile SoC with limited power consumption instead of big power hungry consoles?

Just another tool in developers optimization toolbox. Will help framerates, but nothing revolutionary.

It is a way to reduce quality of shading for better performance and can help on every console when more performance is needed. In my opinion this could be a technique for making the magic ports possible and it also helps when porting a game which already uses the feature on PS5/XSX.

Announcing new hardware wont cannibalize sales at all. Its the same over and over again, it always depends on the current situation.

Switch has reached its height and it will not be affected by such an announcement.

People who are willing to buy the Switch will do so, because of the library, price etc.

People still bought RTX 30 cards besides RTX 40 and RX 6000 Series GPUs besides RX 7000.

If all people would be comparable to fami users, then yes, but reality looks different and to wait another whole year is a long time.

Despite these claims, with so many studios having devkits etc. Its only a matter of time until many leaks happen. This is the reason why Nintendo will have to announce it before the flood gates opens…

If, and i'll beg you all to keep that big IF in your minds, they really announce ReDraketed this month, it won't be at Gamescom.

Either a PR release with more info later (similar to Switch's timeline), or via a trailer/video if it's a "full" announcement.

IF.

Don't forget.

-> IF <-

H2 doesnt have to mean Holiday, could also mean July etc.

July 2024 would still be a year between, personally, i think they're going to keep time between announcement and release within 6 to 8 months.

I think it could happen. It really depends on the type of announcement it is. A big blow out? Obviously not but a general acknowledgement and a tease to begin the hype cycle early and get ahead of all the leaks and reports that are sure to come, why not? I think people take the cannibalizing of Switch 1 sales too far. It wouldn't really crater anything if it's still vague and far away.

It being tied to Gamescom would be weird though, as I assume an announcement like that would be mostly tied to their social media platforms worldwide.

ike someone else stated in this thread. . It’s possible Nintendo expects massive leaks from chatty devs if dev kits are in fact out in the wild. I mean if Ubisoft has one, expect a leak a gamecon. Nintendo should/would want to get out in front of this. Control the narrative.

That’s not a magical bullet and I’d wish this discussion would not paint that as a magical bullet and use Ratchet and Clank PC that has terrible stutters and longer awkward pauses and you’d need to play it again to have a pretty smooth experience.

If that were the case why are we even debating on eMMC in the first place, go back to spinning disks. Since it’s “fine” and has a decompression engine that is somehow assumed to be a magical savior??
