StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

Well damn, now I'm.... wondering what you mean 😎

Will not elaborate!!!

We are all expecting HOS to be the one in use for the switch NeXt, so it’ll be pretty lean and light. But as it’s a new GPU and has new features it won’t be the same occupancy I think. Current one does ~800MB right?

I think the next one would be a 1GB or 1.25GB. Maybe stretch to 1.5GB. But I think 1-1.25GB is a nice expectation unless something bloats or something changes that we don’t expect.

Thanks for trying to control the thread, mods. This topic, and their ancestors, have gone through a lot of arcs, but in general, it’s always been a truly great and insightful place to read.

Do we have any clue (from Grubb or others) as to when that possible Nintendo event / video / announcement in July could be? Next Tuesday?

whole wheat?

So, gonna put this behind for a spoiler and topic restriction for variety of reasons:

The home menu is very much replaceable and is considered as an "applet" if you're wondering about that. The next system having HOS is not really a surprising thing. And it is very modulable anyway.

From my limited understanding, the Horizon OS had such barebones features due to Nintendo wanting it lightning quick, right? I think I even saw somewhere that someone found a menu theme that was written for the Switch but never used, because it'd take time to load and could slightly slow down the menu response or something?

Anyway, my actual question: if all that is true, could Drake, running basically the same OS, be so much faster that those concerns would be moot and things like menu music and themes would run fast enough to be to Nintendo's liking?

Ayo, this thread is off its rocker. What a collection of characters. Good riddance to those posters the last few pages.

All of the speculation itself is incredibly intriguing, though. Definitely going to stop by more often!

That's the thing I'm wondering. If things are overall better, will Nintendo properly implement Themes next system? Both the lack of themes and the eShop being really bare bones (and runs really terribly on top of it) are kinda the two things I'd like to see return.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
WHY HAVE YOU UNLEASHED SUCH CURSED KNOWLEDGE UPON THIS ALREADY CURSED REALM?!?!?!?!?!

My thoughts about themes is that it was definitely a feature pre-release and I definitely don't think literally changing solid colors and putting a JPG background is a performance heavy thing.

It was weird given the functionality is clearly there and even the homebrew mods make use of it. Think it even supported changing the sound effects too, if I recall?

Wonder why they opted against it...

Have you gone through @Dakhil's OP? Some really impressive work has been done in this thread.

So, like, Horizon on NX 2, huh? I hope it doesn’t render at freakin 720p. Shit hurts my eyes. We literally have the technology.

Is there a thread or article anywhere that lists all the Switch games or notable ones with dynamic resolutions???

Also, if a game has unlocked framerates, will they automatically be enhanced with beefier hardware???

With an entire A78C core dedicated to the OS + extra RAM for it, they could do a lot more things without sacrificing the performance of the OS, like having a functional eShop, for example.

Ok, no way in hell is I reading through 8 pages in one day. Can somebody summarize, please?

Also.. anyone post this yet here (like today)? I don't think this deconfirms the F-Zero GX port rumor.. unless there's been a deconfirmation that I'm unaware of. Nate, have you heard any updates about GX.

I suspect one of the major reasons why the eShop and NSO applet are so sluggish is because Nintendo doesn't want the web browser to use JIT recompilation. Can't even bother enabling it just for those two which would help immensely...

Tried to catch up since yesterday, is Nikki a reliable user? Please anything but Horizon for NX2. Going from Wii (U) Era homemenu to Horizon was... Well Horizon just has zero FUN built in.

Wii U UI on top of horizon would be a dream come true. HOS is already so lightweight the possibilities are endless

I agree. The line above every green text should read: "Hidden content is only available for registered users. Sharing it could result in a ban."

Or something like that.
I'm sure a few folks in here have already noticed, but the green text for hidden content was updated earlier.

It used to read:
Hidden content is only available for registered users.

And now reads:

Hopefully that's unambiguous enough, lol. Thanks for the suggestion! To be perfectly clear: the hidden content rule has been a thing since January of this year, and members are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the rules in general, but we've updated the messaging so that there can be no mistake.

Even as a member it can be hard to go back and find the original post with the hidden content.

On the topic of what could be added to NSO+EP down the road, there was something else I was thinking about that could tie into that.

So originally, I'm thinking about the topic of the cross gen transition period. It is a fair point that solely beefing up visuals probably doesn't really sell a cross-gen game to significant groups within the Switch userbase, relative to say, what Sony can sell with their PS4->PS5 transition. My response then is that value through gameplay additions/enhancements would be the way to do it. I still think that, and I've been trying to come up examples to toss out there. Unfortunately, my creativity is on the limited side, and I've found myself in that A to AA budget/scope range. They're the sort of things that wouldn't get a full priced stand alone release. I concluded that they'd either A) be a budget standalone release, B) be bundled together in a collection, C) be a value add-on for NSO+EP, or D) A + C.
Also, conceptually/philosophically, I arrived at a question of, am I trying to come up with a game with a base experience on the original Switch and then build it up into an enhanced experience on the NG, or am I trying to come up with a game with a full experience on the NG and then strip it down into a core experience on the original Switch?

Also, to highlight my limited creativity, I don't make anything out of whole cloth, I can only take pre-existing games as a base and tweak from there (conveniently, this also loops back into the 'what IPs would you want to see revived for the next generation' topic). I'll stop there for this post, cause translating the visualization in my head to language can take a while. And it's probably veering a bit too far away from the hardware thing anyway.

I’d love a StarFox game to see out the Switches time, even if it was just a port of StarFox Zero. I’m surprised it’s considered a favourite of Miyamoto, considering the lack of attention it’s had the last generation

I think it's about time they implement native apps for those.
It's not like they haven't implemented 50 different UI renderers for the rest of the system or for their games.

Judging by the Nintendo Systems job offers I doubt that will change anytime soon. The thing is, I don't think web is necessarily a bad idea, I just believe their web browser does not allow optimization like JIT recompilation, remember that the Wii U eShop and Miiverse used a web applet for it.

I'm a little confused tbh, is the T239 fully Ampere with some lovelace features or is it some sort of bogged down lovelace *SoC? Does this completely dismiss DLSS 3 for REDACTED? 'pologies if I missed a post explaining it reading through the trainwreck ,:v
(also my first famiboards post hi o/)

NX2 isn't the code name for the next device, but NX is the name of the platform which includes the Switch successor, we know this because of the Nvidia leak, so NX2 is a good quick hand for it, though you might be explaining that it's just a community nickname for the Switch successor until we have a codename or official name. We also have plenty of other nicknames, such as the Succ, Switch 2, REDACTED, and NG Switch.

Saw some power profile thing being passed around for the "devkit" all rumor, but 11w portable and 28w+ when docked... It's important to remember that devkits will have a higher CPU clock to run the debug software and just for general stability, Switch devkits for instance run at 1.2GHz. This could count for 1 or 2 watts, so retail units would draw 9 to 10 watts when portable if this rumor is correct.

The docked number is also easily explained, to me this is a case of a 15w draw for charging the battery, thus the power draw for the system is 13w to 14w, again with 1 to 2 watts going towards that higher CPU clock, basically these numbers more or less match launch Switch units, another thing to consider is that 5000mah batteries are very common in both high end and budget phones, this is a reasonable upgrade to expect for Switch's successor, as the Switch used a 4315mah battery.

Drake/T239 uses GA10F (Geforce/Graphics Ampere) it is custom and seems to have some upgraded components, which includes the optical engine that Orin uses, that is vital to DLSS 3.0's frame generation, however it's separate from Ada Lovelace, and we don't know which is superior or if Orin/Drake's Optical engine is fast enough to support frame generation. We will learn if it is at a later time.

New intel from Nikki

Same Horizon OS as Switch 1 for the NG

Confirms how the Switch 2 chip performances will be reduced compared to the retail Nvidia Orin chip

"I don't think anyone has dug into how cut down"?

What the hell has this thread been doing all this time?

And unless she knows something we don't, it's far less cut down than people would guess.
