StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

So like an extended version of what Mario Kart 8 does and what Dark Souls games do in terms of message options?
Yeah basically. I actually didn’t know Mario Kart did this, but if it can be a system wide feature, and expanded upon at least, that would be pretty cool as a way of communicating with others since at the moment there’s very little communicating.
Pardon my obvious line of questioning, but don't investigative journalists usually vet their sources and evaluate information to at least consider the likelihood of its veracity? The line of work is typically a bit more involved than picking out prospective tabloid articles.
The key word is “used to be” not “I currently am”
Hard to believe that an Epic dev would have access to Nintendo's First Party graphics upgrade strategies.
That isn’t too out there, as some plans would need to be discussed regardless with key partners in learning how they would slot with Nintendo’s own plans.

Epic is the one that made Unreal Engine, which would be a major engine that exists on the new platform, and with a lot of developers moving to it, the platform needs to be ready day 1 with UE. And Fortnite is one of the most popular downloaded games on the system (for some reason). So it’s a major game in a sense and epic would be a major partner.

That said, while plausible it seems very generic and safe. Like anyone who was able to properly dig can formulate a leak using public data. And as always remain skeptical.

Folks, this is the Nintendo Hardware thread and we want to keep it that way.

Yes, NintendoPrime has been banned from the site. Yes, he previously served a two month ban for racist rhetoric last year. He mostly owned up to the mistake and took the ban. Since that was several months ago and it has no bearing on the current speculation into Nintendo's next hardware, we would like to move on from the conversation at this time. Everyone has said their piece regarding NintendoPrime so lets all move on and continue talking about Nintendo hardware topics.

If you still want to litigate any previous bans, we have the moderation feedback thread. Again though, the user at the center of this discussion has been permabanned so there really isn't anything to gain by talking about it further.

Hmmm interesting, so I got a 2 month ban for a stupid joke that references a set of zelda characters but put in a poorly written way generalizing all middle eastern people as one race and culture (which I recognize that was pretty bad, yes). And before that, iirc a ~6 month ban for calling someone crazy but again, in a very poorly written manner (the stupid "take your meds" joke).

But, a guy who LITERALLY said that minorities only care about making babies and living off welfare gets only a 2 month ban?

Not only that but there are (some) people who have been banned for WAY less for WAY more months in that one thread where people were discussing ATLUS' writers ideocracy when dealing with trans and queer folk.

Good job moderation team.

All I'm gonna say is maybe not outing yourself as a racist and ableist to whine about someone getting a ban is not the best idea...

(EDIT: Sorry about this, posted this as the mod feedback post went live. Won't be continuing past this post.)

---

Anyway, did I miss anything last few days (besides, well, what was being discussed past couple pages)? For mental health reasons, been staying off the boards for a bit.

I don't think you need to worry about mods pushing people towards right wing groups. If you find yourself being involved with those types of groups, that's your fault, not the mods. Generally, if someone gets banned, it's for repeated offenses or warnings. Either that, or whatever they said is particularly egregious and not worth giving ghe benefit of the doubt.

Anyway, I suggest we end this convo here.

So, Switch 2, am I right?
Except I checked the KK slider guy's profile and their previous posts and there were no previous bans/warns.

Here's where you lost me. What's particularly egregious about the posts from both of those two users I mentioned from that thread that warranted such bans in contrast to the deplorable wall of bullshit text prime posted that resulted in a mere 2 month ban?

This is why you lose your userbase.

Permaban ‘for derailing a thread with relitigating both your ban history and others across multiple posts, you have been permanently banned. -Josh5890, PixelKnight, xGhost777

I already apologized about that post in which had no ill intent. It was a poorly written joke and I acknowledged that, but it was something I couldn't do before my ban expired.

When I wrote the joke I merely alluded to the region. Not the characteristics of the characters THE GERUDO ARE TALL STRONG WOMEN FFS, SAUDIS BUYING NINTENDO STOCK DONT LOOK LIKE THAT. Was it poorly written? yes, did I post it in bad faith? fuck no.

Not really much, while there was other chaos and lashing out, some others of us have been speculating and attempting to theory-craft on some numbers for some power consumptions, or even do some comparisons to like, the PS4, for instance.

Otherwise it’s been business as usual.

Alright, thank you!

EDIT: Quick edit, do you by chance have any links to when that discussion took place for the potential power consumption stuff? Would be curious to see the discussion overall.

if being called out on the internet is all that was between you and voting for the people who want me dead, i don’t think you had my best interests in mind from the get
It won't turn them into people anti-gay marriage, abortion and trans rights. But it certainly will nudge them out of groups who care about it, towards groups that may even be against it. Centrists are one step close to right wingers sometimes.
Literally my previous post...

It's important to make clear the place that has people who want me and my boyfriend dead on a minute by minute basis and actively discuss a myriad of ways of how they would do it and when the right time to do it would be, is a toxic shithole. If anyone feels pushed to the right, it's a them problem for sure. Not a problem with how one forum on the internet is moderated and how they handle certain topics/issues being brought up. If anyone felt like they could be driven away from a community and end up on that side of things, I would say that kind of person is mentally weak and already susceptible to that sort of programming. To have no introspection of themselves and to rely on having to have what's wrong pointed out to them, please. People are intelligent, capable of self reflection, if they got banned for ignorant or idiotic views they held and expect to be hand held into self realisation about why it was wrong, then I don't really know what to say to someone like that. It's something you have to come to your own conclusion about and self-realise and then actualise on that to become a better person.

On the topic of 4chan leaks themselves, I don't mind 4chan leaks, as honestly they have had solid leaks in the past, particularly in the film scene (I see leaked scripts that turn out to be true way too often that originated from 4chan.) So I don't wholesale discredit them.

That being said, always be aware that place is a vile cesspool of pure bullshit (apologies for the language) and a cautionary tale of what can happen to places that have zero morality on the internet. Ten seconds of flicking through 4chan is all it takes to realise how abhorrent it truly is.

Hell at this point, I'd settle for a Nintendo game system / toaster hybrid console if it meant Nintendo announced SOMETHING new

Hey guys, can someone give me a more detailed explanation on why Ampere's cache is such a problem? i have been trying to look into it on my own time but I can't find anything worth reading
Basically the gist is that Ampere needs to be well feed with data, otherwise it ends being sub-utilized and stall. More cache means more bandwidth available. But @Alovon11 can explain this more in-depth.
Sorry for the late response.

Honestly, some others on here know more about cache interactions and whatnot than I do. but the problem I assume you're referring to Ash is moreso Bandwidth, correct?

Well, the main concern about memory bandwidth is that it is a major factor in regard to how much data can be pushed through the GPU in a certain amount of time.

More Bandwidth means higher quality textures/more resolution data, model geometry.etc

So for a system that is allegedly pushing high resolution images with high res textures, and complicated/memory expensive effects like Ray Tracing, Bandwidth does seem to be a concern considering LPDDR5/LPDDR5X cannot break 200GB/s (Where the Series S is...and midrange AMD GPUs without Infinity Cache to prop them up). At least in the assumed 128Bit memory bus that Drake (The SoC for Switch 2) most likely will use. As to break past the ~100-120GB/s range we assume generally, they'd need to go 256bit on the bus, and add a lot more modules which would ramp up complexity, cost, and increase cooling demand and size.

Cache comes in to play, like in the Desktop RDNA2/RDNA3 cards, to help alleviate lower raw memory bandwidth as the cache helps the GPU get some data filled in and out far faster, lowering stall times, and if some data can fit in and out without completely overwhelming the cache, it can vastly improve performance (EX: RDNA2 scaling better at lower resolutions than Desktop ampere as lower resolutions can fit inside of the Infinity Cache itself so data is transferred faster. Meanwhile at Native 4K.etc the difference levels back towards the raw bandwidth as Infinity Cache gets completely overwhelmed. This is part of why the higher end ampere cards usually outpace the higher end RDNA2 cards at 4K as they have flat out higher raw bandwidth)

Drake's cache is a concern as it seemingly only has 1MB of L2, which is a reduction vs even Desktop Ampere of equivalent size

Now, like Redd mentioned, a System-Level Cache can help alleviate this a lot, which is why he (And I myself) hope that Drake has one. Also, Tegra SoCs like Drake can access some of the CPU's Cache, which considering Drake is using the A78C CPU cores most likely (C being for Cache as it has big cache amounts), that does help.

I will say Bandwidth and Memory is a tricky thing as Latency is also a factor, and while LPDDR has lower bandwidth than GDDR like in the Series S|X/PS5 or other GPUs, it also has waaay lower latency.
So theoretically, while having lower bandwidth, it can make calls to the memory far faster than the systems using GDDR with that lower latency. CPUs like this a lot, but GPUs can work with it to some extent depending on the architecture/optimization.

An interesting observation is Ray Tracing itself may like lower latency about as much as high bandwidth if Steam Deck Ray Tracing testing is to be believed as it seems to scale pretty relative to the GPU itself rather than memory bandwidth being a issue vs Series S (Comparing RT Performance seems to indicate no major memory problems, just the raw reduction in CPU/GPU cores and clocks being more pressing for that)

When are they gonna announce this Godforsaken toaster on steroids? If the thread is gonna spiral more and more often, we might all just go crazy......

Anyway, do we think this thing is gonna have any accessibility features?
At the risk of summoning a certain Stormtrooper, the shoulder scroll wheel might be a good first step toward accessibility, should Nintendo actually see that patent through. It might have limited utility in most games outside of menu navigation, but I think it'd be cool. Maybe you can combine it with HD Rumble for a new kind of experience. I'm too tired to think of anything creative, so I'll leave that to y'all.

Before this thread gets locked, remember, Team 2024 won this before it even began

I genuinely have gotten to the point where it's like "It'll come when it comes". I did genuinely think we'd heard something by now, that said.

Ohohohohohohohohohohoho

Now THAT is a spicy take my good man.

July is still the present and there are much "presents" to unwrap before the month's end.

No joke, I'd go for a Nintendo theme'd toaster that puts a burn mark in the shape of Nintendo characters.
Once again Sega does what Nintendon't:

I’ve been spread thin over the last week so I’m only now catching up. I’d just like to say this thread never disappoints. What an emotional rollercoaster yet in the midst of it all, there was still some leaked info from those Tweets.

Never change, Fami.

Horizon on NX2 huh, neat.
I think it's pretty much a given.

But I don't think it necessarily means the home screen or the eShop won't evolve.
Most modern OSs are very modular. They could just add new implementations.

Personally, I like the Switch home screen.
It's very lightweight and snappy, as it's constantly loaded within the <1GB or RAM dedicated to the OS.
It does its best to do its jobs and get out of the way as soon as possible.

I believe that if Nintendo would add new features to the home screen, such as music, custom themes, etc, it could blow past its reserved memory.
In which case, some stuff would be loaded as needed.
With slow storage and decompression, it could take a couple of seconds, degrading the user experience.

With NX2, the reserved OS memory would probably be bigger, the storage could be faster and there's apparently dedicated decompression hardware.
They'd have a lot more wiggle room to add features.

Personally, I'd prefer they keep OS resources to a minimum and give as much to games as possible.

You're gonna convert me to a Sega guy arent my you
Dude they're releasing Sonic games to this day with reversible covers that mimic the crazy white-background-with-neon-shapes-and-squiggles aesthetic they were using in the 90s.

How could you not convert to that religion?

For a minute there, I thought you were talking about Zero Dawn.

I do hope that at some point the switch Home Screen allows for people to sort games into rows like how the 3DS menu did, I personally prefer it more to the one row of games and is probably one of my few complaints with the menu besides no ambience and color options.

I wonder if the limited OS has something to do with the RAM size and how the Switch was essentially slapdash.
