StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

I believe 2 crossgen games was reveled on this Direct: That Luigi Manssion 2 Remaster and the New Princess Peach game.

Both these games don't have a "coming to switch" neither the final title announced. Only word is that them exist and nothing more. Why so secretive?

It was odd but at the same time I saw nothing of note with those two announcements that even provides an inkling of cross gen. Pikmin 4's first trailer to me screamed more cross gen than those two did.

looks like they're not only killing 2023 but 1H 2024 with some of these reveals. a sad day indeed.
I don’t see h1 2024 is dead. I actually think a lack of a big holiday game could mean an announcement of new hardware this fall with a release in March

Or you could be extra optimistic and say this direct was filled with dlcs and remasters because they don’t want anything overshadowing the new hardware announcement next month. With a September direct showcasing ambitious games for drake like MP4.

So after the Direct my hope for the Succ this year has been slightly restored.
Huh, I felt the opposite. Not even just 2D Mario as a big holiday game, but that and a separate big Mario game in the prime November spot. Would they launch successor hardware alongside one of those?

Would be interesting to see who made the games we have seen today. We have the strong indication that Pikmin 4 was outsourced, Mario RPG could be a collaboration with SquareEnix, all the ports of Pikmin 1+2 and Luigis Mansion could also be easily outsourced.

If they launch Holiday 2024 I really expect a perfect launch-year with a lot of first-party-titles.

This direct is pretty much confirming REDACTED for this year, all those games look like transition games to me, no heavy hitters, just indies and AA games. The fact we didnt see anything about Metroid is because they are saving it for REDACTED announcement.

This will be by far switch weakest holiday season

Fingers crossed July pulls through, I would be surprised if September had a reveal but hey, I'm not off this train until the last Nintendo news of the year is out there in the open.

I don’t. But Switch launched with Zelda and Mario. Switch 2 would launch with just Mario? Maybe Metroid Prime and DK. Would that be enough to make it equal to Switch launch?
Third party is going to play a way bigger role than you think.

Yeah, no...
2023 is dead. What i see is next FY onwards.
They wont launch it right in january, feburary also seems off to me, so its march the earliest. We have Pokemon DLC, 2D Mario, Mario RPG and third party stuff, nothing huge (arguable Wonder, but...meh, mixed) but to much to launch big new games with the successor.
This direct feels more aimed at shareholders to be "see, we have releases!" then fans, to buy them time.
For me this direct meant, maybe the 2D mario game (im not sure about this trailer, i need more impressions if its a 60€ game for me....) ... and nothing else.

They are coasting hard. And i fear they will lose a lot of momentum, and games like the LM2 port or the Peach game dont really profit from stronger hardware, so it will be hard with a lot of their bread and butter games to pick the pace back up i fear.

This is insane, lol. SMWonder is an easy 15M-seller, 10M of which up to and including the coming holiday season. I always found 2023 ridiculously optimistic, but this game alone buries any hope, imo. Even H1 2024 is doubtful now. Holiday 2024 still possible, though.

To be fair my hope for 2023 has been quickly approaching 0 and this just slightly restored it. I just want to will it into existence at this point.

While I gave up on 2023 a couple months ago, today confirmed it. Not sure where I land on in terms of H1 2024 vs H2, but the Peach and Luigi announcements felt a little weird, with the lack of information.

Yep, to me Nintendo is transitioning to their next console and are saving the big hitters for that (aside from 2D mario). Good thing in my view. Now whether the successor gets revealed this year I have no idea, but this makes me confident that holiday 2024 is the latest the successor will come out.

I see Oracles Remakes (with the 3rd game as the big hook, maybe this as clear REDACTED title) or alternative WW/TP Remaster as release window games.

Praying we get Drake this year now. Watching that direct is making me realise I really really don't want to play games on a regular Switch anymore.

I was thinking the complete opposite; they look like the kind of games Nintendo would release late in a console's life when they're transitioning to new hardware. The Luigi's Mansion 2 port is a case in point, as the 3DS got a port of the first Luigi's Mansion late in its life (a year after the Switch launched). Besides, if Nintendo's relying on a 3DS port as one of the early titles for The New Machine™, cross-gen or not, then something's gone very wrong.

The peach announcement looked like it was because of the movie. Peach stocks were up very good with the movie and maybe Nintendo is capitalizing on it. But yeah it was a little weird and I can't tell if I feel that way because we know new hardware is coming or not lmfao.
It’s also their Holiday game

Wait, what?!
I don't think some people are treating it as their "big" holiday and that's kinda funny.

Some are looking too deep into stuff to fit a narrative. The Peach game was weird but it's not THAT weird lmao

I don't want to be overly optimistic but that's exactly my thoughts as well.

I know backwards compatibility is already pretty much a given at this point but Nintendo being so gung-ho with ports and rereleases now just seals the deal for me. We now have all the Pikmin games on Switch and I think by the time Metroid Prime 4 releases it’ll be the same.

Early 2024 will be when we get the reveal imo. September Direct will go into more detail about some of today’s announcements, have Metroid Prime and maybe 1/2 surprises. If we get dates for Luigi and Peach games before March at that direct, maybe we’ll see a March release but I’m thinking it is gonna be later in 2024 than I’d like.

Having a hard time believing that Super Mario RPG is really their big holiday game. I would bet there's another one that they decided not to announce yet. Something not involving Mario as this Direct was very Mario-centric - which is why they threw in those Peach & Luigi teases (to ride the movie wave too).

Don't get me wrong, Wonder looks fun as fuck and will be a worthy big seller. But Super Mario RPG is not on the same level. (mass appeal wise I should add. I love the game and recently beat it again on Wii a couple years ago so my excitement for it is slightly weakened as a result). I think there's still space for another big first party game and still time to reveal it.

Not at all, the direct only showed that they are coasting and will milk the system for another holiday. The earliest is holiday 2024 for this next system.

They showed a bunch of (mid imo) but I’m only one person, not the larger market.

In fact, I’m confident in there being a OLED Mario themed switch for this holiday to round out for a help in the sales and it will be revealed in August.

And no new system this holiday and possibly not the next one either. But that’s a maybe for the latter one.

I think it’s more that those two titles don’t have a release date rather than being a cross Gen. games.

It feels like Nintendo is going to ride out this year and perhaps half of 2024 with more ports, remasters and sequels and announce Switch 2 this time of the year

It will sell a lot for sure, but at least for me, it looks like I wont be buying any switch software for the rest of its lifespan, I was really considering to get an OLED, but theres nothing there for me to play anymore, switch had a lot great games, but im done with it now.

2023 isn't happening. They've got a new 2D Mario, Super Mario RPG remake, new WarioWare, Pikmin 1+2 remakes, Pokemon DLC, and a bunch of 3rd party stuff.

Really odd that they announced a Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon remake and some random new Peach game for 2024. That seemed really out of character for Nintendo.

If Metroid Prime 4 were coming this year it would have been announced at this Direct.

Are people just ignoring that Super Mario RPG remake is coming out November 17th?

The next hardware ain't coming this holiday guys. Let's get off the 2023 copium and jump on the 1H 2024 batch of it

I dont think so, all the software announced can easily coexist with REDACTED transition happening this holiday season.

I dont want to continue with this kind of games for the next 15 months xD

BFFR, that ain’t selling >10-15M units

Let’s not kid ourselves, Mario RPGs sells like 4M tops. Tops.

Nintendo: oh watch me do just that.

The big thing I’m thinking of is people have already been pointing out how sparse this year has been for releases, and if REDACTED is coming holiday 2024 then they have to still fill an ENTIRE year with games.
They’re already getting tons of remakes, remasters, and ports out of the way this year, I feel like they couldn’t do that or have enough to fill all of 2024 as people wait.

Doom-posters must be seething after this Nintendo Direct lol. "They won't announce any games past June" they said, "They're keeping them all for the next console" they said...
They're keeping big games like Metroid Prime 4 and a new 3D Mario that weren't featured at all in this Direct.

They're definitely holding some bigger titles at this point.

I mean, they've announced Metroid Prime 4 a little over 6 years ago. The Switch's golden age is almost over and it hasn't come out yet, what could possibly keep them so busy (Aside from the Prime 1 remaster)?

Don't forget that beginning of July will be 4 years after Lite reveal and 2 years after OLED reveal.
This, other reasons and suspicious/odd stuff from this direct tell me that 2023 really shouldn't be impossible.
It's too early to tell.

The game was rebooted a bit more than 4 years ago. They must do a lot of polishing, plus possibly a remaster of Prime 2 & 3, and next gen improvements on the game while ensuring that the base Switch version works fine too.

Don't think a whole lot can be gleaned from this Direct.

Curious if anything hardware-related happens in July. Otherwise, it's whatever.

Yeah, it's a very weird pick for November. Nintendo does have a history of sometimes launching multiple titles on that day for multiple systems.

I don’t understand how anyone could possibly think 2023 after watching the Direct.

Sucks, because I wanted 2023 to happen, but it’s just not.

It was odd but at the same time I saw nothing of note with those two announcements that even provides an inkling of cross gen. Pikmin 4's first trailer to me screamed more cross gen than those two did.
I had the same thought process, thinking Pikmin 4 was showcasing lighting and shadows too advance for the switch...but I was humbly reminded that this game was built from the ground up for the switch and nothing in that pikmin trailer was screaming next gen graphics for the redacted. Don't get me wrong, the still looks great though so I am just glad the game is finally releasing after being announced a couple years ago.

That H2 schedule is weird as hell. Why are we getting two small tier releases when they could have been summer? I'll still hold off until July, but my strength in 2023 is waning. I'm wondering if that new Mario game will give them to 15 million units.

yeah, I'm jumping ship to #Team2024 with this. as a Mario fan this direct delivered for me (SMBW looks great) but even then I can see support is definitely waning

I'm worried that the Switch's 2024 will be full of even more filler titles than this
