hard hopium but I like the spirit.
I feel a new Mario or DK game is more likely to show up at the next direct then if this time last year someone went "this is the direct we'll finally see Mario Kart 8 Deluxe get dlc courses".

My personal opinion is that we don't get a Direct until around March at the earliest. With Fire Emblem Engage releasing last week, and Octopath Traveler 2 and Kirby out in February, I can't see Nintendo pursuing other marketing beats, and IMHO, I don't really think they need to.

I'm probably way off the mark, I haven't paid too much attention to the Direct discourse this time, but I do think Nintendo has a strong enough q1 and q2 with zelda to justify holding back ever so slightly. Unpopular take, I know. Hope I'm wrong and therefore pleasantly surprised. I need me that Metroid Prime remake...

2022's February Direct was the best of last year imo. Strikers, Portal, Switch Sports, Earthbound, No Man's Sky, Live a Live and Xenoblade 3 make up for a pretty strong Direct. Strikers and Switch Sports got criticism but were successful games nonetheless (especially Switch Sports). I've always wanted to try Earthbound and Xenoblade 3 was my GOTY.

The Partner Showcase was very good too, a close second, and the September Direct was underwhelming.

A direct in the first week of February is the perfect timing to market those two games though. Always felt that it's the most likely time for a direct and I've seen nothing to change my mind since. They get to mention Fire Emblem again while it's still fresh, and give one last push to the Feb/March games before release, before the big TotK blowout at the end. It just makes a lot of sense.

Agree that there wont be a huge amount of new announcements in the next direct due to how strong Q1 and Q2 are looking but expect we'll still see a few things announced for Summer.

Also keep in mind the Super Mario Bros. Movie is early April. I wonder how that might factor in.

It’s quiet …

My prediction, week of February 6th. Octopath Traveller 2 Demo that carries over progress launching the same day. New "99" NSO game. TotK trailer that has major callbacks to previous Zelda games, like similar dungeons/homages and characters (Tingle?!).

Bet ya a quarter that the "99" game turns out to be Horse Game.

I'm betting either Feb 1st or Feb 8th-9th, leaning towards the latter as it's usually the second week of Feb and I get a feeling they may not want to step on the toes of Taipei Game Show

ig im in the minority but i honestly thought the september direct last year was way better than the february one. i thought strikers, switch sports and the mk8 dlc all looked super disappointing, and i wasnt feeling super hot on three hopes either. third party announcements were really weak imo too, all ports, forever entertainment remakes or stuff designed for mobile. three hopes pleasantly surprised me but that doesnt change how i felt watching the direct. not a bad direct though, xenoblade 3 and live a live were great announcements.

the only big disappointment in the september direct was how short the totk trailer was, definitely a weak ending all things considered. but they also had a great looking mainline fe coming in 4 months and pikmin 4 finally announced, along with some great third party stuff like octopath 2, theatrhythm, master detective archives and, of course, fitness boxing fist of the north star. definitely a top 3 direct for the past 3 years for me, though it sits at a solid number 3 behind february 2019 and e3 2021 for sure

But they will change it. They did that in 2019 too. Their first new format in the Switch era only lasted from April 2017 to February 2019. Then in September 2019 it was changed completely.
Wait, really? That's interesting. Thanks for telling us this. Time to go watch the April 2017 Direct, February 2019 Direct and the September 2019 Direct.

Now I can't wait for a new Direct format.

Last year, the direct was on the 9th and a demo for Triangle Strategy was released.
Team Asano’s demos has always been released at least 4-3 weeks before the game.
Octopath 2 will come out on the 24th.
Imho, February 1st will be the day of the direct.
Plz be true!!!!

Hot take

The Mario vs DK series were all good to great games. They just suffered from the same issue that things like Mario & Luigi or NSMB did where we got so many of them in such a short period of time that people understandably burned out on them.

They also gave us the modern Pauline design too

(I still actually have to play them but I applaud Nintendo for cranking out more of them than Psygnosis did with Lemmings back in the day)

Nintendo says you can see the Direct right now but if you watch it, you can’t ever post on Famiboards again, what you doing?
Famiboards is the choice. If I can't share the hype and excitement with everyone, what's the point. You can rewatch a Direct. You can't survive without Fami!!!!!!!! What else am I to do, whilst waiting for the next Direct? Post on Famiboards of course.

I'm more surprised that after the original (which was closer to DK 94 then Lemmings), the series pivoted to being Lemmings and never strayed from that. If they make a new MvsD it should be more like the original or DK94.

This is what I would hope for too. DK94 was so good and it still shocks me that people passed over it thinking it was just a port of the arcade game. Nintendo Power did a good amount of coverage on it back in the day and spilled the beans on what it actually was. Kid version of me just saw it as "that new Mario game but it's a continuation of Donkey Kong, not the Super games" similar to how Mario Land begat Wario Land.
