"The direct was bad because they're holding back for new hardware" is a lot easier to copium then admitting "this direct just didn't have many games for me, and that's okay".
It's also because people don't realize that we don't know everything of 2023 lineup before the first Direct of the year. Nintendo is not in position when in last September they needed to reveal most of their 2023 games.

People also worked themselves into a shoot on rumors and leaks for things that are probably all still coming but were planned to be shown off later

I think it had more to do with the refusal to show more than fifteen seconds of the zelda coming out in may and showing even less of pikmin

unfortunately, the reality was that pikmin was just a little teaser and they're being cagey with zelda on purpose

I actually think Mario will be missing from the next Direct.

That's right, folks, Mario is Missing Deluxe + Bowser's Typing Fury launches this spring alongside the official Nintendo Switchboard + Mouse. Trailer ends with a teaser for 2023's big holiday release: a new Mario Paint. Calling it now.

(to be very clear, I am obviously not an insider, I'm just someone with a dream)

We do appreciate someones with dreams.

When are people expecting the Mario Movie Direct? The movie comes late March in some countries already so I feel they will do one last Direct in early March about it.

Are there still countries with a March launch? I recall Germany was one of the last to have a March 27th date, but that was moved back to April 7th recently.

Mario Day (March 10th) seems as good a day as any. It’s a Friday this year, but all eyes are on Mario anyway and it’ll probably be like five minutes long again.

it was supposed to release late march but they delayed it by one week ( at least in France )
Movie has been delayed to April 7 in Germany now
Yep, it was supposed to by late March for many countries, including here in Czech Republic. And I was glad since I thought "oh nice, I won't be spoiled since we would be first (almost 2 weeks before US launch).

But now only countries left on the March list (as of now) are: Ukraine March 23th, Norway March 24th, Iceland March 31st. Everything aside from that was delayed.

I do not recognize the existence of Mario Movie "Directs"

can't wait for Nintendo to start saying shit like "check out the content updates coming to Splatoon 3, live exclusive on Nintendo Direct"

All this talk of showcases happening the same week reminded me of this gem.

I mean on the plus side, mini or general, whatever happens this next month or so has gotta be better than the last direct… right…

to be fair to Nintendo, that Sony presentation was incredible and there wasn't a chance anybody was gonna be able to top it.

Yeah looks like Mario Toy reveal an hour ago is all we are getting today. I was preferring a Wednesday announcement for a Thursday show this week in particular, but still a bummer though.

I am glad that everyone knows that only time for resseting is 23:00 JST. Would be could if everyone also learned that "focused on Spring titles" or "mainly on" means nothing.

With tomorrow’s Xbox Developer Direct, today wasn’t the right day to have expected an announcement, save your hope for next week.
Directs are planned months in advance. Nintendo just can't say "oh, Microsoft has their thing, we need to delay this". Shadowdrops are also tied to the Directs, 3rd party games and so on. Anyway, Sony had their State of Play last September the same day as Direct and Nintendo was okay with that. That's not how these things work.

Also comparisons to Sony Directs are hard to make because (IMO) it feels to me like Sony has been showing off Spider-Man, Horizon, and God of War in every digital event forever. Of course they have bigger games. The same ones each time

But the State of Play was announced after the Direct announcement? or am I wrong?. I do know that there is a lot of preparation and planning before a direct but if there is something very big to be announced it should be done without any competitor event, not to be shadowed (even if it isn’t Nintendo case).

Yes, it was announced after the Direct. But it's not unlikely that Nintendo does not know what it Sony up to and vise versa. But that date for Direct was the last possible one before TGS and after Splatoon 3 so they had no other choice either way.

"Furukawa-san, I just wanted to inform you that we are having a presentation called a Developer_Direct on January 25. We ask you kindly not to hold your own Direct that week so we can ample room and attention to present our products"

"Mr. Spencer, please do not worry about it. We were planning a big Nintendo Direct to showcase some major titles for 2023 but out of respect to you, your employees, and their families, we will just move the Direct to the following week"

"Furukawa-san, you are kind, wonderful man. Together, we can provide the best gaming experiences for own fans in a manner where everyone wins. Now, let us celebrate by skipping together down to the Cold Stone Creamery where we will share a wonderful scoop of MICROsoft ice cream."

-laugh track-

+1 to this.

Guys, understand this; Nintendo doesn’t care a single bit of marketing plans of other companies.

...not quite. for other platforms? yeah.

But if say square, capcom or some of those types of publishers have some planed and would like to coordinate that with nintendos direct, then i am confident that they are in talks to make that happen, since both benefit.

I think the final truth people will have to arrive to is that September Directs are just inherently less hype than the others. Just because of the timing within the year. Lots of third party, some new trailers for holiday games and a cool reveal or two for the next year but rarely a big hitter. Once you accept that it's still really cool to have an event at that time of year.

Man, that sounds like one bad therapy session.

j/k ... i couldn't resist. ^^

Nah, it was alright. Just the fact that my sessions are exactly the same time as tweets usually happen makes me feel like "Okay, now that's over with, let's see what went down in the meantime."

SOMEBODY FINALLY SAID IT! September Directs are almost always pretty weak, I really cannot believe the absolute hatred for the 2022 showing when the September Directs from 2017-19 exist, tell me how a Direct with four major game announcements could be worse than those??

Sep 2022 easily cleared the other recent Sep directs, though I will say 2018 with Luigi's Mansion 3 and Animal Crossing reveal resulted in two games that actually had immense quality, content, and polish compared to a lot of other "hype" disappointments (Switch Sports, Strikers). Cue the ACNH content jokes, but I played it for 300 hours pretty easily so lol
