But that isn't what he said. Nor what they said.

He has been explicit that he is not discussing the device we are discussing. We are talking about the Drake powered Switch. He was not.

You’re in denial.

Nate is saying he thinks Drake will be the next gen Switch, or can be. He’s also agreeing with DF in saying no new Switch next year.

If there was some other Nvidia Tegra chip other than T239 intended for a Pro revision, I would have thought we'd see open-source Linux commits since I'd assume Nvidia would use it in a Shield TV refresh. They did use both Erista and Mariko in the Shield TV.

there is absolutely no sensible way to reconcile this with any device coming in 2023

I know we all like silicon here but the product natedrake knew about is dead, end of story
There absolutely is. He has said. This isn't Drake. This has no bearing on Drake. Any speculation we have about the Drake equipped Switch remains unchanged. As far as I can tell, all that can be inferred is that if the Drake Switch launches in 2023, it will not be positioned as a next gen refresh, but a successor, which makes sense given the power it has.

Or he could just be getting mixed up like Mochizuki did with the SWOLED and what-would-be-known as Drake.

What if the device Nate is talking about, was meant to be a Revision and was planned to release in 2021 instead of OLED Switch Tegra X1 and Drake is fine and releasing in 2023 as a successor?

why would a pro model and successor have been developed to launch at maximum a year apart???

But that isn't what DF said, either. There is a lack of clarity here.

I know you just said you'll be sharing more soon so if this is stuff you'd rather share later I understand, but:

Have you heard whether "next-gen" will still be a hybrid console? I wouldn't expect Nintendo to abandon the Switch concept but usually "new generation" for them comes alongside a shift in form factor and gimmicks, so I worry.

Also you're notifications are probably blowing up right now, sorry. 😅

I have a few details but nothing that's concrete enough to share/report, as early concepts will evolve and change before final details are set. Preliminary details show promise but, again, nothing is set in stone and they can/will change.

We were discussing the Drake powered Switch, you chimed in with "the heavy news I was talking about is the revision is shelved". Nobody here was speculating in earnest about a revision that isn't Drake. In future, I would appreciate it if you clarified things up front. Clearly you've come across as obtuse to some people here, and it's caused some upset. I know that wasn't your intent, of course.

I was commenting on what John L had shared.

So what were the devkits that you mentioned way back when for? Drake or this mid-gen refresh?

Mid-gen.

this is literally the exact same situation in a compressed time frame

some murmurs of bad news come, I pick up on them, I get talked down, then the top dog comes in and says "yeah about that"
That's overegging the pudding a bit, don't you think?

So, where does Drake fit into all this? Does this mean there is no hardware release at all for 2023? Not just whatever this mid-gen hardware is, but Drake as well?

That's what I want clarification on.

I feel like there's 3 different devices being thrown around in the discussion and none of it makes sense, and it doesn't help that we've nicknamed... whatever the supposed Spring 2023 release system the same name as the SoC that we know for a fact exists

I lurk so I have no right to complain but the last 6-7 pages are genuinely 80% misinformation/misunderstandings taken as facts and general shitposting and 20% actual facts. It's very hard to follow.

Yeah, I... was under the impression that the Drake was what Nate was talking about, that is... something I wasn't expecting.

Wonder what exactly the hardware mid-generation was supposed to be then, that is... Huh.

What's the opposite of Occam's Razor, cause that's how I'm feeling right now
Not sure, but Occam's Razor dictates that there shouldn't be any "Hidden Reivision" device with DLSS+RT Hardware Not running Drake. Considering all we've seen about was Drake (And drake in fact exists thanks to the Linux Kernel updates)

I left out step five of something actually happening

hopefully you're right and I get to be dumb and wrong

how come I only get to be dumb and wrong when I have hope for something...
Don't worry, we're all caught up in the tornado of hype and disappointment here. We're all in this together.

so, bigger picture

dev kits did go out a while ago. that device is now said to be dead. that means that no fewer than eleven publishers have a major bone to pick with nintendo

rather than dooming I'll say that given the circumstances of the pandemic it's unlikely to harm long-term relations in any meaningful way. I bet it was an expensive disaster though

So a revision using Drake, has been replaced by a next gen device using Drake?
Sounds like a delay and a shift in postioning/ marketing to me.

There's no way there has been more than one diss capable chip in development for Nintendo.

In terms of timeline based on the old info though, there was a cancelled mid gen refresh that had DLSS and PS4 level of power? Which chip would this have been if not Drake? This seems…weird.

Wonder when we actually see the next gen console then? 2024 or 2025? Switch gonna be chugging like crazy by then and Drake will have much less of an impact as it would in 2023.

A head scratcher, but I guess it will be a de-facto Switch 2 either way. Though considering the work that was done on the device I can't imagine the timetable could have shifted that much.

This would make sense, but again this is not what is being said:

No one ever said Drake was the SoC for the revision.

Cancellation of the refresh doesn't mean anything happened with Drake. Don't conflate the two things for pedantic reasons.

fuck it

I don't want a new switch

I just want answers
This is where I've been for like 2 years now.

Mid-Gen 6 years in the console lifecycle is well questionable. Both Wii and Wii U had a lifespan of 6 to 7 years.

Officially, Drake has not been delayed. The window has been late '22/H1 '23 internally for a long while. I've been getting updates on timing; but I will not share any such specifics unless they fall outside that window -- late '22/early 23.

2021 was never in the cards. The only reason is was ever mentioned for 2021 is due to a mix up & conflating the new hardware in the hands of developers with the new hardware entering production with an OLED screen.
What is this talking about then?

Anyone claiming "Nintendo will be ok with just Metroid and Pikmin next fall" is out of their mind. Switch is losing momentum fast, there's no guarantee they'd keep it up until end of next year. There has to be something else, something big. I'm not sure there will be any third party support left late next year to accompany those two games. Maybe not Drake, instead another form factor revision. Switch Lite OLED, anyone?

So, the latest revelations say...

  • No new Switch in 2023
  • Drake 2024, (maybe successor?)

I think it clashes a bit with the 'Switch family' shelf life, but things seem to be clearer at this point.

I was holding back on RE Village and RE4 remake to play them on Drake (inevitable releases I thought). Might as well buy them on PS4 Pro. Might even get a PS5 now with my Switch 2 cash holding.

The switch will be fine. It’s going to sell above 10 million units the next fiscal year and be closer to 15 to 20M unit range. There is nothing to worry about. It is still selling pretty well despite its age, and it is still selling a ton of software.

Nintendo can literally coast next year without any issue if they wanted to. Are we forgetting that they have a new fire emblem, a new Kirby, a sequel to the game of the last decade, and they haven’t even revealed the rest of the year lineup yet?

the only way I can possibly make sense of this is
  • dev kits go out based on unspecified hardware in 2020
  • devs are told that these will be replaced by drake
  • drake dev kits are sent out, old dev kits are returned
  • ???
  • old dev kits are "cancelled, were to be released in 2023"
this would be one fucked up game of telephone
