StarTopic Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet |ST| Who You Callin' Paldea, Friend?

I keep seeing Applins on the map but Applins are nowhere to be found! Any idea what is happening?

The icons on the map just tell you that Pokémon has a chance of spawning there, not that they're there in that moment. Some mons have low spawn rates so it might take a while for you to see them.

There is an area north from Zapapico, bordering the walls to the crater where I found my first Applin and then I found a second one a few seconds later, so maybe the spawn rate is higher there if you want to try.

Correcting myself, the area is actually south of Zapapico. It's a grassy patch right by the crater walls. I was reading the thread on era today and someone said apparently two Applins are guaranteed to spawn there, which matches my experience.

Just started the game finally, since I got my Switch back. So far it’s fine but the students animating at like 4-10 fps during the first class scene is definitely a "WTF" moment. And they are so many just wiggling their legs so it’s ultra noticeable! Seriously Game Freak?

Okay I finally finished the game. Now gunna finish the Pokédex.

Buried under an avalanche of technical issues is probably the best new generation of Pokémon. There’s a lot to love here.

If you listen closely, you can hear Grusha screaming internally from making his last Pokemon worse by changing them to Tera Ice. Must be in his contract.
Nah Grusha is probably just upset he didn't get to use all Ice Types in the first place

He's very clearly a monotype purist

that miiverse water guy must have been beside himself when he saw this water

I caught a shiny Teddiursa today and realized there are probably two tiers regarding shinies now, right? The ones that can be find in PLA and the ones that can't lol

After four badges I think my team is nearly complete. A few of my Pokémon evolved today and my best friends are finally here: Skeledirge and Ampharos! I’m trying to use all new Pokémon (new to me anyway), but Ampharos is my absolute very favorite Pokémon ever so I have to use him. Why is he shiny in ScarVio though? Like, glossy. He’s reflective. It’s weird.

Are we sure that the history teacher’s hair isn’t a secret mon not yet discovered, cause her left side keeps twitching lmao.

Can we talk about how fire is the character design in this game? Like, Pokémon has always been good at this, but SV is just on another level, every damn character looks stylish, cool interesting, and I want to learn more about them just from seeing them. Team Star's leaders and teacher are the highlights, but I love them all. I'm still not over Mela's boots, that's some RPDR shit.

Also the gym battle in Medali was incredible. Nothing's gonna top SwSh gym battles, but that one came really close, the gym leader is hilarious haha I feel seen as a longtime pokémon player who is now a salary office worker lol

Thank you camera, very cool.

Wow, Shiny Arboliva is a brick wall? Interesting design.

Three things that seem universally loved about S/V: the Great Crater, the Tinkaton line, and best boy Larry.

Seriously, he’s doing his best juggling three jobs. If he cared enough to focus solely on Pokemon training he would probably be hands down the strongest Trainer in Paldea. Also he treats us to a meal after the gym battle! What a nice chap.

Larry is GF friendly-mocking us who started playing these games back on the Gameboy.

And i'm all here for it. Gimme a Larry spin-off.

Make it a Persona-like game, half part work/social stuff (like the school and stuff from Persona), and half part JRPG dungeon crawler.

My partner and I have been resisting looking up all the stake locations to unlock the evil Pokemon.

After figuring out we can fly to the doors once you've interacted with them once, we then noticed that the four chains holding each door shut actually disappear one by one as you find the stakes for the door. Pretty cool.

We might end up looking at a map for the final few stakes though. As much of a blast as it's been discovering them in the wild, there gets to be a point. Lol

Only 5 Pokemon left until I finish my dex: Kingambit, 3 of the Stakes Seals Pokemon to unlock, and Koraidon. Trying to get the first from Tera raids, unfortunately I lost one today.
I can touch trade Koraidon for any trash mon today if you want.

I have only one left and that's Miraidon! If you caught the other one, we can "touch trade".

@Serebii I'm curious about something.
I saw on your latest news post that National Pokedex numbers have been added across the site for all Paldea Pokemon.
Since release, the National Dex numbers have been a point of contention since only the Paldea Dex numbers have been released (because there is no National Dex to reference the numbers in Scarlet & Violet).
Where did this data come from? Is it official, or exclusive to Serebii?
Are the National Dex numbers for Paldean Pokemon simply based on their order in the Paldea Dex?

I also wanted to mention that the Pokedex numbers on this page seem off (or inconsistent).

.... and one more thing I noticed: on this page, the link to the page on Cetitan (#975) leads to the page on Brambleghast (#974).
Several other Pokemon lead to the wrong page, too.

He mentioned on Twitter that the TCG previews for the upcoming sets have National Dex numbers, and they are different from both the internal code and the assumed ingame numbering.

EDIT:

Said tweets:

(there should also be a button on most pages to email him about issues, I've done that before and it's gotten resolved)

I stopped playing the game for a couple days and then the info about the easiest way to get herba mysticas came out so now I'm back playing. Played last night, got 10 herba mysticas in a couple hours. Also, got 2 shinies during a Golduck outbreak. A Vaporean, which surprised me, and then a Golduck. So I had a good night. I do want an Iron Hands shiny and I figure I will need two Roaring Moon shinies so I can trade one for an Iron Hands. I'm not ready for that grind lol.

Last night I caught that lvl 60 Raichu outside the port city when my team was in the early to mid 30s. That felt good.

Woah that totally worked! Exactly 2 were there. Caught em both. I think that area is pretty good, get the sense it spawns all the mon of that area and since it is kind of a small isolated patch it gets easy to get them all. Thank you!

These sandwich boosts do not mess around. Got 3 shinies for 1 sandwich. Although one wasn't the type I targeted haha.

Gives me 10 or 11 shinies now.

Got 3 shinies for 1 sandwich
So this is why I don’t get shinies. It’s punishment for starving my pokemon because I’m too cheap to buy sandwich ingredients.

Lechonk should be dropping chorizo bits, not just tufts of hair!

To be fair these are the first shinies from a sandwich boost haha.

I trained a Mabostiff up to level 42 for the Psychic gym and in doing so made my team pretty overleveled. Only for Mabostiff to get one shot by the Gardevoir because I forgot Gardy was part fairy. Oh well.

I think I'm gonna keep Mabostiff on the team. She is so cute and adorable!

Last night, I finished all three major story paths, leaving just the endgame content. I got some thoughts I want to share on each route in the order I finished them, though I followed a guide to match the level curve at each point.

I'm glad we got to see the Totem Pokémon concept return to the series! If anything, I wish that the game pushed these further. There are some basic navigation involved to reach the titans, you get two rounds with each, a solo fight and a multi battle against them boosted with Arven, and that's about it, mechanically? I would have liked some more complexity to each encounter, more things like the boulder sequence with the Open Sky titan.

I think what carries this storyline is Arven himself. When I first encountered him at the lighthouse, I wasn't sure how to feel about him, but his arc with Masbostiff was touching, and I found myself motivated to continue the arc for his sake. He is now my MC's best friend - besides Nemona, of course.

So I am of two minds for this route. I think the actual challenges against the Team Star grunts were all very easy. I think utilizing the Auto Battle system for these was a nice idea, but the 10 minute time limits and 30 count of Pokemon were too generous. A shorter time limit or escalating the number of Pokemon to battle would have done a lot to make this more interesting. Maybe weaving in ambushes with your limited team alongside the auto battle components too?

That being said, the actual boss fights were great, featuring some fun strategies to counter the common weaknesses, like Mela using a Drought Torkoal or the dual types that Eri uses. The highlights are the Starmobiles, each coming with custom abilities and exclusive moves, helping the fights to feel very climatic. The fights against Director Clavell Clive and Penny (trans rights!) also served as a solid climax...even if I kinda swept through, like, 10/12 Pokemon with Annihilape? Pokemon battles, am I right?

While it was a bit "tell, don't show," it was nice to see the backstories of Team Star unfold alongside seeing the growth of Clavell. I'm so glad that a non-punitive solution was found - makes me proud as an educator IRL.

So this was the most consistently fun, as is to be expected. I love fighting gyms! Like with Gen 8 I do wish there was a little more meat to some of their bones, but I still had a bunch of fun taking down each gym leader and enjoying their personalities. Same with the Elite Four and Champion! Some pretty interesting teams and playing it like a competitive battle, with no items.

...I won't lie, though - the Nemona fight? It's the big story climax, it's the fight the game hypes up from the start. And I wanted this to be as big as it could. I saved it for last for a reason. And then...I just straight up swept Nemona's team with a single Pokemon?

Like, it feels like a Quaquaval at a reasonable level (at least 58) is engineered to destroy this team. Set up a Swords Dance, Aqua Step on the Lycanroc, Terastilize, and go to town. Pawmot? You just used Aqua Step, you'll outspeed. Use another one with your +2 Attack and you're fine. Goodra? You get the TM for Ice Spinner from a gym and Quaquaval is a great user of the move. Everything else your STAB covers. I think they could have given her a more diverse team, one that isn't so weak to one of the starters.

I think I mostly feel bad because I found Nemona super endearing as a character. My favorite rival since Blue/Green, a refreshing take on a competitive rival who has easily warmed her way into my heart. Best character. I wish the game gave me the challenge she deserved! But, hey, children's video game, I get it. Maybe I should have taken her own first, given that Arven ended up being more of a challenge due to my levels!

Pokémon Scarlet has been a game that's been more than the sum of its parts. The game is very janky, especially with its first impression, and I think it could have pushed its ideas further and made its main "boss" scenarios more interesting, but I am enthralled with it nonetheless. Can't wait to finish this game, then go after Pokedex completion.

Interesting to me that a lot of people had problems with Arven and his Mabosstiff. I beat him pretty easily. Nemona was on the easy side too, but I was up like 4 levels when I got around to battling her. Funnily enough I think I had the hardest time with Larry’s flying types.

Starfall Street is indeed mechanically the least interesting. I’ll chalk that up to GF needing to polish up their ideas for the Auto Battle mechanic.

For me, it was less his Mabosstiff specifically and more the team surrounding it. That, and me playing the game like it was on set mode, if I planned better and set up my moves in advance, I think I could have handled it. Those lessons were learned and that's what helped me win against the rest of the fights.

They did a great job with Larry's team. So many dual types. My Kilowattrel wasn't actually that great of an answer, and my Garganacl is a great Pokémon but also a slow one.

I think the Starfall Street concept can be refined and turned into something really great, but it does need that second pass. For now it's an adequate vector to get to the more interesting boss fight, but not much more than that.

Eric the Worker, some random NPC above Alfornada, is maybe one of the hardest trainers in the game? He nearly wiped my team of level 40s, I had to use revives to beat him. His Luxray has thunder and freaking ice fang to deal with ground types. Then his Elektross has water moves for Skeledirge. Most NPC trainers only have one Pokémon, but this dude has three, with strong moves and good coverage. Wild.

I remember that guy with the Ice Fang Luxray! Yeah he was surprisingly tough.

The Fighting Team Star boss exposing me for having a REALLY shitty team lmao

Half my team is weak to fighting. The other half is weak to Ground. The only special attack in my entire line-up is Aura Sphere on my Meowscarada

It's not my fault all the cool Pokemon are physical this gen. I might have to train a Killowattrel just for this.

This game is just so good I have to make it my game of the year.

Plus the amount of fun I'm having in the postgame is wild. It's so much easier to fully IV / EV train your Pokemon for competitive battling that I'm able to actually spend half a day going from egg to battle ready. And not to mention the hunt for Pokedex completion! Shiny charm is going to be a game changer!

So I noticed pretty early on that outbreak icons would frequently show a different form than what actually spawned in the outbreak, but I didn't think much of it until tonight when I realized that there was a pretty clear pattern to the mismatches. If I'm not mistaken, it seems like you always get the first form (in Pokédex order) of the Pokémon, regardless of which form the outbreak icon is. That's actually a fairly serious bug, if my analysis is correct, because that would mean that outbreaks for alternate forms are just borked and you just can't get outbreaks of them. Hopefully they fix this in a patch.

I swear my shiny odds are broken. I found two full odds shinies during my regular playthrough, now I've done three outbreaks with the Shiny Charm AND shiny sandwiches matching the type to no result. 😖

I found a shiny Stunky without doing anything special or during a mass outbreak.

I consider this as a "Fuck you" from the game for me. Just like that shiny Zubat in X/Y.

Dammit bellydrum my "Scarlet is GoTY" hot take is less exciting if website dad is already doing it

Thats how I got my shiny vaporean. I was swimming around looking for a shiny golduck and boom. Pink mischievous thing was sticking out of the hill lmao. Only issue now is I want all shiny eeveelutions.

I found a shiny when I was racing past some swablu. Something made me stop and take a second look and sure enough there was a beautiful yellow shiny swablu. So happy with it!

All gyms/bases/titans now complete. Who needs a reasonably balanced party when your Ceruledge can Swords Dance up and one-shot the Fighting Starmobile

Gonna fill out the dex some more before I move on to complete the stories

People probably see Arven as hard because the game kinda pushes you into that completing that path first by giving you new movement options, so it's more likely someone comes into that fight unprepared or under-leveled, especially as that fight isn't telegraphed in the way the final fights of the other two are.
