StarTopic Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet |ST| Who You Callin' Paldea, Friend?

The idea that some people finish this game in 30 hours is so foreign to the way I play this game lol I am at 25 hours and only have 2 gyms, 2 stars, and 2 titans completed. Definitely not finishing everything else in just 5 hours lol but I am looking at every corner of the map so it does make sense lol

That “correct order” thread mark is… all over the place lol. Is there really nothing in the game that guides you that way outside of just general level curves you see of the wild pokemon?
You can ask the Pokéstop nurse joy lady.

How far do you guys recommend getting to before venturing off on your path in the beginning?
Depends on you really, but I finished up the school quick because you get the mount afterwards, and it helps a lot in exploration.

Pokemon Center lady gives some solid advice, but I never really listened to her. Sometimes powerful wild Pokemon have me reeling, sometimes they’re hilariously 10 levels lower than me, the roll of the dice is chaotically fun.

Went media dark after I picked up my copy, so haven't been keeping up with any of the threads. Just watched credits roll after roughly 40 hours of gameplay (excluding time spent shiny hunting). The performance is a total mess and there are so many bugs, but the actual game was shockingly close to how I imagined Pokemon games when I was younger. Made me feel like a kid again. It really sucks this had to be the one mired in technical issues, because the core game is easily in my top 3 mainline games, maybe top 2.

as someone who went east for a bit and is now out west, things aren't easier out here! you kind of have to do what you can and keep trucking
I went east just to evolve Charcadet lol. That first team star raid was not easy lmao. Once I did that it pretty much seemed pretty well leveled. But I stopped going north after Zapapico. I've just decided to pretty much go to Serebii and check the gyms to see the "right" path lmao.
Friend of mine has gotten super lucky with shinies… none here yet!
I got one; a nice pink pig.

Yeah the wild Pokemon is somewhat similar to Arceus where you'll have a bunch of average levels Pokemon and then 1 Pokemon that is a higher evolution and 10-15 levels higher than the others lol. I like and hate it because I NEED to catch it even if it's hard. Same with the wild Tera Pokemon.

I did a Salamence raid online, brought it down, threw a Ball, and... I don't have a Salamence. Not in my party, not in my boxes. I don't even have any Bagon Scales or anything. It's like the raid never happened.

As a lapsed fan since X+Y, save for Arceus, I’m having a lot of fun getting acquainted with the mon from the gens I missed.

Also, it really makes sense that of all games pokemon can give the least fuck about level scaling and such since the character doesn’t carry the level. I didn’t quite realize the depth of that going in, and the effect its having on my type of preferred play style - exploitation + dex-filling. I always wanted to be a dex focused player, but the games made it brutal before.

Ok, thoughts so far.....

+ - I'm thrilled I never read spoilers or watched trailers or whatever, because every new pokemon is some revelation. I bet many have never tried that. You're cheating yourself. Seriously, it comes around so rarely. When you get it.............damn, it's good.
With that said..............they're...............ok so far.
Shield had amazing new 'mon. Violet has.....well, kinda ok new 'mon so far. Maybe they get better. I'm anxious for more.

+ - Music swell
Really loving the dynamic score thing thus far. It's cliche at this point, but kinda working in this game more than most.

+ - New gimmick crystal thing.
Yeah, it looks idiotic, but it gives a lot of range in play. I bet the competitive scene is going to be lit with type change.
In story-mode it's kinda boring, and honestly always looks lame, but whatevs. It makes going out of your way for a glowy spot worth it to get the randos.
Just wish they weren't always old-mon (my team is contant new mon, natch). I get the old-mon show better, but damn. Come on.

+ - Natural pokemon movements.
It really does feel like a huge improvement how much these things move around compared to the last try.

+ - Toedscool
OMG I LOVE IT

~ - The exploration is mixed.
We had this already with Arceus - this. year. It's not as good as it could have been with a broader break. As is, kinda...yawn.
Feels good sometimes, copy/pasted others. A lot of "have I already been here?"
Mixed.

~ - The pokemon centers
Love how visible they are in the field. Hate how stupid they are in function. Feel like these should feel better than they do.
Mixed.

- - The performance is broken
I'm literally the case study of "I didn't notice." I can't tell you framerates and literally don't see it. Most things, I don't care.
That said - here - Yeah....it's terrible.
I notice. Constantly.

- The towns blow
Why do you make something so big yet so useless? It's dumb. Either I can go in the doors or they are a nuisance.

- Cooking
It's a failure. Dumb.
+ the Nintendogs-ripoff washing pokemon is the best part of picnics.

- Activities
I mean, I get that everyone wanted "open world pokemon," so whatever. It's here.
My desire is gyms that challenge you. Even with a type-switch mechanic, it feels dumb. That's not to mention the Sun/Moonish "activity" style thing.
Would be more excusable if the other two (base raid and titans) weren't so lame. Come on. Make this SOMETHING. It's banking everything on the open world, and I'm just.......
Journey is good, Destination needs to be something now.
How amazing would it be if you cared about the gym leaders? Felt intimidated by them, felt like challenging them, felt like it might be a fight?
What if they had a 6-man team with something amazing to twist you up?
Maybe it gets there with F4. Maybe not. We'll see.

Still not reading spoilers. Still using the most useless new-mons I find. 4life.

Peace to all the real trainers.
Stay not just cool. Stay Toedscool.

Yeah, the performance issues are awful and I will never stop raking the decision makers over the coal for releasing the game in this state, but fucking hell is it frighteningly addictive. And there’s just… so much of it. It’s just a world I like exploring because I like catching and encountering Pokémon so much. I spend hours just running around in fields chasing Pokémon and letting them lead me from one area to the next, totally ignoring all objectives. Literally hours. And I don’t even realize it.

It’s just such a shame that they’re so unpolished, and that that will be what will stick with them. If only they’d been allowed the proper time and care they deserved and clearly needed, I think more people would have recognized them for what they are — the best mainline generation Pokémon games in a VERY long time.

As someone who doesn't usually care about performance...

I still don't care. Like, yeah it can get bad and even I get annoyed in towns, but I've played worse (hello, Ys 9's Switch port) and still wasn't too bothered. I agree that the game shouldn't have released in this state and I'd very much welcome a patch to smooth things out, but that's more an academic position than something I personally care too much about. And my god this game is so fun. I just keep getting distracted by new areas and Pokemon, if it keeps this level of quality up I think this might actually end up my GoTY

Maybe one day I'll even do anything beyond 2 Gyms and 1 Titan. You know, just after I keep combing this area in hopes a Toedscool actually decides to spawn and ooh wait is that a raid and ahh it's a [insert Pokemon I have literally never cared about but am weirdly excited to see right now]

Alrighty - I just finished up the main game and saw the credits roll, and...

Yeah, this is easily the best pokemon story since Black and White. Actually - really, only this and Black and White have good stories, so maybe that's not saying much, but the last thing I was expecting from this pokemon game was an interesting narrative with good characters, and yet... here we are.

No spoilers, of course, but I really liked the 3 main side characters. Nemona's story is easily the least interesting, but she's so fun that I don't mind. The other two's stories start kinda slow, but then end in a really satisfying way. Please, give us more of these relatable, human stories, Gamefreak. No more 'mwahaha, I want to get rid of all of the earth's landmass!' or... whatever it was that Team Flare was after - I legit don't remember. I also love what they did with the 'evil' team this time around. And then that ending... yeah, man, that's how you end a Pokemon game! The lack of voice acting is more apparent and jarring here than ever before, but it was still a really solid conclusion with a twist that I did not see coming and honestly kinda hit me in the gut a bit.

Plus, it seems like we get some post-game content? I'm done playing for the day, but I'm looking forward to seeing what that's all about tomorrow.

If it weren't for the truly terrible performance issues, I'd probably give this game a high 8 or 9 out of 10. It's so fun to play, and while there's still plenty of room for improvement, it completely blew my (admittedly low) expectations clear out of the water. Sadly, those performance issues are here, and are very, very apparent, so... I guess it's a 6 for now.

I'm pretty sure she just sends you to the nearest challenge which is definitely not always level appropriate, I think she recommended the final Starbase to me when I was around level 30 and that went poorly to say the least.

Rough level of the Pokémon in the area has been the best indicator for me so far, without the guide. Probably isn’t perfect but it’s a decent ballpark.

Yeah that's the way to do it if you're going in blind, just challenging a random trainer near a Pokecenter works too since you can run from trainer battles now.

Uhh, Cufant? What are you… how did you…

Get the game used, or rent it, perhaps?
I think this is going to be the route I go. It's so snobby of me but I guess I gotta stick to something for once, I've said I'd do it in the past and then gave in. But this is pretty egregious so I'll go used. I'm glad everyone's having fun. Just hope they patch it. I also consider myself the person who doesn't even notice dips that occur like 27-30fps, and don't notice when cutscenes cut FPS from 60 to 30. But glitches and massive drops make this obvious. I think I'll still have fun while rolling my eyes with my nose up haha.

Why do Cufant climb lamp posts? Because they’re there.

I found a spot that spawns a lot of Chansey, so I’ll be stuck here for the foreseeable future, grinding whichever Pokemon I have that can evolve via level up. I’ve settled on three Pokemon as part of my main team, probably gonna fill out the roster with Pokemon from previous gens unless I find another cool Gen IX mon.

Question about breeding and Tera-ican'trememberhowitscalled types. Does anyone know how these are being inherited? Or do breeded Pokemon always have their main type as the tera-type?

Uhh, Cufant? What are you… how did you…

I hope you caught it and called it "Roach".

I was checking some information on hidden abilities for this game, and is it true that the only way to get them is through Ability Patches? While it's certainly a valid way to get them even though it's not easy to do so, I feel like there should've been an alternative way to get them since those are not the easiest things to stock up on.

Thank you for reading.

I've had my Charcadet from the first area and only just evolved it, lmao. It was a pain but totally worth it, she's so beautiful 😍

The game says I’ve met a shiny Pokémon but I sure as hell don’t remember it. Don’t they have the stars animation and jingle like in Arceus?

I don't think there's any special effect that marks them as different from other Pokemon in the overworld ... well other than the different color.

But some shinies look ... very ... lame with almost no difference to the normal version, so it's easy to miss in some cases.

No jingle in this one, and the animation only plays in battle.
That was so convenient, so of course they removed it, ffs.

Is there any point to getting closer to the teachers? So far only Jacq has actually given me stuff. Kinda feel like the whole taking classes and talking with teachers thing is a bit out of place in the gameplay loop. I only decided to mess around in the academy because you have to go there for story reasons.

Anyway, I’ve decided on 5/6 on my main team. Think it’s time to get that last mystical herb.

History teacher will put the locations of the sublegends on your map, and give you a little quest to find them.

Two of the other teachers give you 50 Tera crystals, and one gives you Galarian Meowth.

What the heck are these?

Oh ok I guess I’ll do them later on when I get bored/done with the other stuff
Legendary Pokemon that don't have busted ass stats lol. Think Articuno or Suicune.

The ones that aren't Restricted in Ranked formats.

You can catch them from raids

isn't literally the entire point of shinies that they're hard to get

While i do agree that getting a shiny shouldn't be trivial, it still does suck to miss one even when the chances of one appearing increased due to the amount of Pokemon on the ScarVio overworld.

And for real, some shinies are basically unnoticable from regular forms, see this example:

Left one is normal, right one is the shiny.

The only difference, the eye fire color, and that is very easy to miss.

I ask again, isn't that literally the point?

I ask again, isn't that literally the point?

I mean, if you're playing for nth hours and have only met one during the whole time ... wouldn't it be fair to make it more noticeable?

Compared to previous games without overworld Pokemon, once you meet a shiny, you're locked in combat and have all time in the world to make sure you can catch it.

I ask again, isn't that literally the point?
no? the point is that they don't show up frequently, not that you miss them when they do show up. the whole reason they're called "shiny" is because of the sparkles that appear in battle

I have found 3 shinies so far, one was a Skiddo that literary fell from the sky. Watch the skies traveller.

The number of sensationalist “bug” videos I see on Twitter that are either comprised of clearly expected behavior (eg. Multiplayer shenanigans like running around a battle) or poor edits to make something worse (speeding up, jump cut) really does a disservice to the actual conversation about the state of the game

No, the point is that they're rare. It's never been the point to easily miss them when they do appear.
Don't forget aesthetics too, it's nice to be able to have a different color option.

Side note: I hope one day they add a second shiny color for all Pokemon, give us more colors.

I love that squawkabilly has four colors to catch!
Yeah, they've added some cool Pokemon with multiple forms and colors this generation, plus they brought back most of the classic multiple form Pokemon like Sawsbuck, Florges, Oricorio, and Vivillon (all of which weren't in SwSh).

Just missing my Furfrou, maybe in the DLC, especially since the area in the map theoretically borders Kalos.

I assumed the identification was part of the fun, per Pokémon's inspiration of bug finding. If it's always been this way I understand the complaint

If it were up to me shinies would be somewhat more common but harder to identify. Noticing variations would be a very immersive experience imo
