StarTopic Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet |ST| Who You Callin' Paldea, Friend?

i was gonna wait till Christmas before buying Pokémon. Or at least till after I finished Ragnarok.. but I’m weak and I caved. Scarlet is downloading as I speak. I was planning on Violet, but my buddy ended up getting Violet which is fine with me. Koraidon is cooler Miraidon anyway. Plus prehistoric professor > proud boy professor.

Anyway, gonna pick Fuecoco and get going.

Team star is giving me fraternity sorority vibes lol

And that unnamed (for now) student I saved is giving Fire Emblem Engage protagonist

Not proud boy professor lmao

Rocking a team of all 3 starters and the mystery gift Pikachu at the moment, still not actually ventured to the school yet and just been wandering around the first area haha

I can't get over how this scored so low in comparison to Sword/Shield. But then again it COULD have scored higher if they had given it some more time.

If the framerate would be fixed, shadow clipping glitches removed and some anti aliasing would be introduced this would be my favorite Pokémon game of all time. Both me and my partner can't put the game down and we went in without spoilers. The story is very enjoyable and it is a delight to reach a new area keeping the experience really fresh.

The last couple pokemon games have been pretty good gameplay marred by technical issues.

For Scarlet and Violet, Game Freak went harder in both directions, greatly improving the gameplay and moment to moment fun, but also introducing absolutely hilarious bugs and glitches.

The Scarlet and Violet Book is available for perusal in the Entrance of the school by the way. Some fun stuff in there.

I was going to go Violet because of Miraidon but then I saw how it animated which had nowhere near the weight of Koraidon and I went Scarlet.

Part of me regrets this decision because Violet wound up having cooler uniforms, but fuck it I get Koraidon and Professor Sada.

I am 1 or 2 level above the Star Teams and they are wooping my butt lol. While the Lets go section is ok, the boss fights are hype.

I had Miraidon disappear for a few seconds earlier lol

So far, this game is basically what I’ve wanted 3D Pokémon games to be for a long time now. Just wish there were more clothing options. Oh well. Maybe they’ll add some later.

Obviously this game runs like hot trash, but if you're able to overlook that, it's really quite astonishing how big a leap over SwSh it is

Nemona is giving me Vegata vibes. Wouldn't be surprised if she says she wants to be "stronger than Kakarot" one day.

Gonna be honest. Ignoring all of the technical mishaps I'm having the most fun with this game than I did Legends and that was probably the most fun I've had with a Pokemon game. Open world Pokemon is a blast. The Pokemon designs are really good. Even the weird looking ones look good.

Just gotta laugh at the jank as long as it doesn't crash the game lmao.

What if it is revealed in like, ten years on an episode of “Did You Know Gaming” that the Scarlet/Violet’s director was actually…

AYOOOO GOT MY FIRST SHINY

I had essentially given up on finding any since there wouldnt be any overworld jingles and sparkles.

And I was almost planning on not checking this one out at all because I got duped into thinking I found a shiny before but those turned out to be different colored variant pokemons. XD

Edit: OH AND HELP PLEASE
I accidentally ko-ed gimmighoul.. pls tell me if is there a way to get another one? 😭

Congrats on catching Miss Piggy. I’m sure Kermit will be happy to know she is safe.

I've found multiple Gimmighoul chests, don't worry.

Congrats on the shiny :) I've been lucky enough to find a shiny Hoppip and Marill so far. I was coming here to ask if the rates are higher, or if I've just gotten inordinately lucky lol

What does the white terratype icon in the box mean, next to the name and number of the Pokémon? All of mine have it. Does it change for raid obtained ones maybe?

And the only real guide to doing things in order is the “area two, three” so on ordering right?

Having played more, on about 6 hours now, whenever the game gets “linear” (e.g. an indoor space or in the gym cutscenes) it honestly looks really good. Same for some specific battles where the arena is pre-set, things like Terastallizing and the bespoke character animations look gorgeous. But whenever you go exploring, which seems to be the bulk of the game, it looks terrible and runs horribly. The complete lack of stability to the world makes the whole thing feel unfinished and incomplete, the major city that’s split with different levels and elevators looks genuinely like it was the first pass for layout purposes and then just left as is. Also, as a relatively minor complaint to add in the grand scheme of things, whenever the cloud shadows cover the map everything looks washed out as there’s no global illumination bounce.

I found my first shiny, a Hariyama. But I didn't catch it because I had found my way into a cave full of what I assumed to be higher level Pokemon and knew I didn't stand a chance so I had to let him be.

It was the cave under the town with the Psychic gym. I assume you climb up through there to get to the town, except I only had one badge and no movement upgrades so I just skated around all the Pokemon and picked up a bunch of items then bounced.

When I first started the game, the tech issues were pretty much all I could see. Once I started the open world part however, I fell in love with the game (and I have only done 1 of each of the three types of quests so far even tho I have played for about 13 hours so far lol a lot of distractions for sure lol). Not sure if there are actually less now or if I just got more used to seeing them. There are still issues for sure, but I haven't seen it lag recently compared to how awful it was for the roughly first 10 min of me playing.

Also really happy the "only pokemon under ## level will obey you with the badges you have" don't seem to apply to my starter that is now a good 10 levels higher than my current limit lol trying to get all my pokemon up the the same level but I tend to default to my starter most of the time and it is insanely overpowered lol

i hate that the map rotates lol.

That's there's no option to disable this is such a weird omission. It's really annoying.
You actually can disable it. Just pull up the map and click R3, which will lock it so that north is always up.

Anyway, I'm having a surprisingly great time with the game - terrible frame rates and all. But I do feel like the lack of gym scaling is the most obvious omission. I'm honestly not sure why they decided to make that not a thing.

I was able to sit down with the game through the whole day, and I am up to six badges earned, four titans downed, and three bases cleared.

I love it, and it's a major step up from the previous versions, but the non-linearity and open-world (which are the best aspects of the game and should be retained in the future) can sometimes make things too easy if you do something out of the ideal order. So, yeah, I kind of wish this had some sort of level-scaling.

I wonder if level scaling is something they can play with for a DLC area or something.

Is there an in-game way of learning about evolution levels and conditions? I keep looking up at Bulbapedia :p seems like the auto-battles don't evolve them but some of mine were not evolving after regular battles either so I got uncertain if I was missing some condition

They probably should, because I feel it's something that would be harder to nail down than most people expect; but also something they will probably need if they continue the open world games.

Sometimes NPCs will mention or allude to some, but there is unfortunately no real way to find out beyond the internet. It's a shame because some of these new ones are very obscure.

Didn’t sword and shield have some kind of level scaling in the DLC or am I misremembering

I played for a little more than an hour tonight. Didn’t get to the school yet, but I’ve caught about twenty Pokémon. It’s okay. The main problem I have with it so far is how slow everything is. Battles are slow, cutscenes are slow, your character is slow, the camera moves slowly, transitions are slow.. add in the slowdown and the stutters and the entire game feels like it’s in slow motion. Like you’re constantly fighting through sludge. It’s not good.

Despite that, it’s still Pokémon, and Pokémon is still fun. Fuecoco is adorable. Koraidon is cool. Namora is cool, I like her. There’s good stuff here. It’s just such a shame that it’s wrapped in this awful package.

Caught a shiny Swablu! Only my third ever non-locked shiny. Wish it was a new Pokémon but I'll take it

Yesterday I did the "seventh" gym as my third, and I haven't even done the "first" yet. And I did the desert titan as my second lol

It did, depending on what you had done in the main campaign. I think it was a certain set of levels for before 8 gyms, after 8 gyms, and after the Darkest Day event.
