It might happen next week as well. Giant Bomb Dan says next week, Grubb says the week of the 12th.
It's great to know that it's soon, but if it's nearly two weeks out I don't know if this thread can keep up this amount of energy that long, lol

HOLY SHIT

My uncle just sent me some marketing material for The Sequel to The Breath of the Wild - finally revealing the name - and you're not gonna believe this:

botw2vol2.jpg
I did an actual coughing laugh at this, thanks 🤣

Is there any chance for Eternal Darkness? It was my favorite first party GCN release after Metroid Prime. Certainly they must know that now is the best time to give the IP another chance given how much more popular survivor horror has become since the original's release.
As long as Dennis Dyack is nowhere to be seen, bring it on. Would love an updated version of this. Honestly, this game needs the RE-make treatment to really show off the various insanity effects and add to the creep factor.

Please Nintendo and Bamco have a Ridge Racer and Ace Combat for us.
There was this leaked-thru-linkedin Ridge Racer 8(iirc) game that was supposedly in development alongside Metroid Prime 4 when it was at the Bamco hell. Dunno what turned out tho.

Branching paths isn't really the issue; it's the inherently limiting fact that you have to replay the game to get to said branching paths. In the 'planets' idea above, I think having certain branching paths so there's some consequences for your performance/actions on any one planet would be great. Like with Odyssey's branching paths, but with more reason given for why you got one or the other.
As long as there isn't a ton of repetition during subsequent story playthroughs, is this really an issue? You can go to Venom from Bolse and end the game there if you want, or you can start it up again and play harder levels to get there from Area 6. It's not as if it's a massive time investment to go through the storyline to begin with.

You know what GC game I most want remastered?

F-Zero GX

The other two I’d want are Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4 but sounds like Prime will drop soon to complete that set.

From the Wii it would be Punch Out!!
I'm curious and excited about Resident Evil 4 Remake. I'm wondering how much of a 1:1 or a reimagining it will be.

I mean that game looked so great on the GC and PS2 that literally nothing compares or come close. Looked better than most PS360 games even tbh.

I always find the discussion around what people like Grubb find "exciting" before any event to be pretty much useless. It's personal taste, I got crazy when ATLUS dropped SMT 3 and V in a Partner Mini, I doubt many insider felt like that was a megaton Direct. At the same time, a Direct with MP, TP and WW for me would have the same effect as watching paint dry for 30 minutes but I bet many insiders would call them "exciting".
I would trade a Partner Direct with Resident Evil Switch and Shin Megami Tensei V-2 for almost anything.

But Metroid Prime Remake alone is gonna win the next Direct for me honestly. I'm just that thirsty for Metroid. Zelda ports can either be a great addition or ruin the show for me, just depends on whether or not BotW 2 will be there or not.

Random thing I'm hoping to get soon: Between the Direct and TGS and the NIS show, we should finally get an actual release date for Labyrinth of Galleria, low-key one of my most hyped releases for early 2023. It's a perfect cozy winter DRPG so I'm hoping it's out like Jan/Feb timeframe

I just want a combination of Adventures and Assault to be honest. I LOVED Adventures' Zelda like bits of gameplay, and I would love to combine that with Assaults' all out space battles, where you could land and take off anywhere at will. Feel like shooting stuff with your Arwing, sure let's do it! Tired of that? Land and jump into the Landmaster for tank gameplay. Or just shoot stuff with your arsenal of weapons on foot!

I would very much like a game like that.
sorry to inform you but we’re mortal enemies now :(

I want Resident Evil Revelations 3 and Dragon Quest III-HD2D
will I be excited by this Direct?

thanks.

(does Baten Kaitos fall into the third party umbrella?)
I think a Revelations 3 would be different enough that Capcom wouldn't have a problem with announcing it before REm4ke?

I think that's an E3 2023 material tho.

But I'd love to be wrong because a Resident Evil made with the Switch in mind is literally the biggest third party announcement for me.

Will be interesting to see what Nintendo ends up plucking from here.
Putting on the GCN context Metroid Prime sure was a mega hit. Damn.

Always nice to see Aonuma (which i guess will introduce the segment like usually) ... i just don't hope he comes with bad news again. Not this time please.
Nate said this a while ago. Compare Kirby atFL to BOTW2, Kirby was shown in September and came out late March, about 6 months later. If BOTW2 is coming out late March and makes the fiscal year, then it should follow the Kirby marketing cycle, so it makes sense to show it here from a marketing standpoint alone.
The game will launch in 6 months or close to 8 if it's not a March game. I think it's time to start some marketing, title drop isn't that hard thing to ask for.

As someone who really likes F-Zero X (and will keep asking if it can please be fixed on Switch), how similar is GX? It looks like it's more of a "going really fast" kind of game and less about smooooove motion, but maybe I'm wrong.

1. A remastered Eternal Darkness would genuinely do well, it probably has the best shot at success of the non-Zeldas/Metroids.
2. Waverace and 1080 are easily accessible, small games and should also be remade.
3. Thousand Year Door should be remade as the series still exists.
4. F-Zero GX would clearly benefit from an online component.

As for StarFox? Well it's not like they're going to do anything better with the IP, lol.
I think Eternal Darkness might get an actual reboot, maybe maintain the title and make a new game. Having a remaster would mean crediting even pedos and I don't think Nintendo will want that.

This is basically just Mass Effect, but with choices and consequences tied to the gameplay instead of the narrative. That could be pretty damn cool if implemented well.

If you like X you will most likely like GX

If you love X you will experience heartbreak previously only known to the ancient poets

an F-Zero GX port is such a bad idea to try to give the franchise another chance

giving a franchise another chance with a remaster barely ever work, and surely not to an already niche franchise, I don't see GX selling well at all lol

Zelda and Metroid ports were already just a matter of time, am not sure if both releases indicate that Nintendo will start porting Gamecube games from now on
Depends on how high effort the remaster is. If it's just a simple 1080p cartridge dump, then yeah, it'll flop. If it's a legitimate effort though, then I think it could do decently well.

It's also probably important to gauge whether a certain developer can be trusted with the IP before handing over the keys. It's not like any of Nintendo's current studios, subsidiaries, or partners are really fit to develop it at the moment.

It is a massive upgrade in every way except for the soundtrack, but the GX soundtrack is still really good, just not as good as X's.

definitely bums me out that the switch is wrapping up but it's had a longer run than it feels
As long as the successor is backwards compatible I see no reason why you should be bummed out. The Switch had a great run, now it's time for Nintendo to beef up the hardware so the brand can stay relevant for third parties.
The "kid friendly image" argument doesn't pass muster, becuase the Xbox also underperformed. Why does the answer for "why didn't the GameCube succeed" have to be anything other than "Playstation 2."
True, but it didn't help that the kiddy image was perpetrated by most gaming journalists/media. Gaming magazines and shows like X-Play often painted Nintendo as kiddy and that stigma lasted for quite a while.

Well... it's been kinda implied that Miyamoto apparently doesn't even care about about fan feedback that much when it comes to Star Fox.

Like what's been said before, if Nintendo/Miyamoto had actually cared about what fans were saying from the get go when making Zero, then they wouldn't of made it so heavily built around a weird gimmick (which has been a common criticism with SF post-64) and actually designed it like a proper SF title from the beginning lol.
My only problem is that I don't find that gels with Miyamoto's usual rationale about how "StarFox should always be different" and "he makes the game he wants to make". Something happened to make things change course a bit.

And I think Miyamoto (along with Cuthbert and Iwata), effectively spelled out the reason why things went the way they did.

Miyamoto
But that is how much I feel like the Nintendo 3DS system really gives [Star Fox 64] a greater feeling of outer space. I told Dylan-san that if this game wasn't interesting, I couldn't make any more Star Fox games!

Dylan

You did say that.

Miyamoto
I said, "If first-time players like this game, Star Fox will be reborn!" That's how much I'm counting on this one game!

Iwata
The future of Star Fox depends on the reception it finds.

Miyamoto

So if there's anyone out there who wants to look at the future, please play this! (laughs)

643D happened, in a nutshell. And that, along with probably other feedback, was likely all that was necessary for Zero to be made as a "reimagining" of the brand, in order to both appease classic fans, as well as those who got bought on board thanks to 643D.

The repetition is only a part of it; and really it's not a big part at all. The main reason why I personally don't like the 'replay to get new levels' style is because it devalues said levels. Not because it makes them inherently worse, but because it makes them disconnected from your own 'holistic' experience with the game. They're things you have to go out of your way to do afterwards purely for the sake of it, and that is always going to place them as 'secondary' to the set of levels you happened to get your first time around.

It's a similar problem that many 'narrative-choice' games face, where most players will simply never feel as excited for, say, doing an "evil playthrough," of Mass Effect compared to their first one where they did what they wanted. They might want to, and it's definitely cool that it's there, but they probably won't, and if they do they almost definitely won't care as much. Except, of course, Star Fox games 40 hour RPGs with massive narratives and tons of stuff to do. So, unlike with Mass Effect and its ilk, the moment where you go from "first, exciting playthrough," to "second playthrough you do to 'see the rest'" comes at the 2 hour mark instead of the 40 hour mark.

It also inherently limits what kind of game a 'Star Fox' game can be. If your game is a 2 hour arcadey title meant to be played 4 times over, then you can't do satisfying long-term progression, or an in-depth 'complete' story, or even add much more content lest the game get 'too long' to replay. You can essentially only make Star Fox 64, but with newer 'stuff.' Which is fine, but not exactly befitting of where gaming is at right now in my eyes.

...that's the idea though? you replay star fox to take the different routes. it's part of the fun
For some it is, definitely. But for many, I think it's a hindrance more than a help, and I've explained some of the reasons why before. That and Star Fox Zero already got rid of the whole "replay the whole game to get to a point," system, so Nintendo themselves clearly agrees with me in some way.

One of the writers of the game was arrested for maintaining... Yes, on his computer.
Damn. I guess nobody would blame Nintendo if they don't include him in the credits.

To be honest, I hope they go for the remakester route with Eternal Darkness, the character models can be improved but the voice acting can't, the voice work they did in the original was magnificent even for the time.

Will we ever get Nintendo Selects for the Switch? 😔
I know Nintendo definitely doesn't need to make it for evergreens but at least the flops and B-tiers having price drops/re-launch would be welcomed

"Deep into that darkness peering
Long I stood there
Wondering, fearing, doubting"

The moment I launched the game on 🐬 and heard it my spine just chilled.

I totally agree they should go the Remakester route, like Capcom did with Resident Evil 1.

One thing that's kinda worth pointing out is that Miyamoto and Amano actually at first did want to create an entirely new Star Fox game on 3DS. It just ended up becoming a remake of SF643D because the higher ups wanted something that could come out very early in the 3DS' lifespan.

812d28edf3b3454ad2e11032893c1374.png

maybe they'd tried reimagining sf64 right then and there

tbh I'm not even sure how much that Miyamoto quote regarding the future of the series really factored into anything considering 643D didn't even sell that great, either (took nearly an entire decade just to sell barely over a million), and yet we still got Zero.

This actually gives me a small amount of hope that a Colosseum Remaster could ever be a thing.

Also imagine the reaction to a Melee remaster, goddamn.

If we don't get a title reveal the next time we see a BOTW 2 trailer, I will buy someone in this thread a copy of WW/TP HD for Switch. I'd set up a giveaway and everything if a mod wants to mark this post lmao
In this economy? With this inflation? Save your money. No Zelda title reveal till 2023.

How we feelin' about a Prime 4 tease along with the announcement of the Prime 1 remaster?
I'm feeling hopeful!!
They're (were) aiming for a 2023 release, showing a teaser alongside the remake of the game it's gonna go back to is a great way to start it's marketing cycle, even if it slips to early 2024.
I just can't wait to see it.
