So in light of recent NSO updates, I got @CyberWolfJV to update his missing NES/SNES/N64 lists...

I've mentioned this before, but boy they really are really already thinning out of first party N64 games to add lol. 1080 Snowboarding, Smash Bros., DK64, Mario Party 2, Cruis'n USA and Excitebike 64 are all that's left that were previously available on Wii/Wii U VC and thus seem to be within reasonable grasp. They're definitely gonna have to work with Microsoft and other third parties to keep the train running a little awhile longer.

I wonder why neither Cruis'n sequels ever got a re-release, even though the first one did?
I'd assume Pokemon Stadium comes, as do more of the Rare games. From third parties, I will keep hoping for Mystical Ninja 64 and Mischief Makers to come along. Even if Nintendo have (for example) the rights to 7 or 8 Rare games, and let's say 7 or 8 of their own games (the six previously released, plus Pokemon Stadium and perhaps Pilot wings 64), they're not going to get much further than late 2023 before running out. Additional third party titles takes you into 2024, but they'd need more than they've secured in the past (and I do assume they've managed that, but I don't expect there to be a flood of titles).

It's possible that monthly releases won't last much longer and Nintendo will add GB and GBA to the Expansion Pack, giving them an easier source of monthly retro content, with N64 becoming an 'every now and again' deal, so that Nintendo can maximise the length of the content rollout. That would also give them time to negotiate for more N64 releases.

It's almost a joke how late to the party Life is Strange is on Switch. I was waiting to play that game in 2017. Well at least the games are still great and the True Colors port was stellar so better late than never.

Just following common sense, I believe these are the remaining titles.. (granted, we're due to a looong ride, and getting lots of minor 3rd Party stuff in the way...)

NES:
Golf
Devil World
Urban Champion
Mach Rider
The Mysterious Murasame Castle
Shin Onigashima (JPN only)
Fire Emblem Gaiden (JPN only)
Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II

SNES:
Vegas Stakes
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Marvelous: Another Treasure Island (JPN only)
Wrecking Crew '98
Sutte Hakkun (JPN only)
Hajimari No Mori (JPN only)
Metal Slader Glory (JPN only)

N64:
Cruis 'n USA
1080º Snowboarding
Super Smash Bros.
Pokémon Stadium (due rumors...)
Donkey Kong 64
Mario Party 2
Excitebike 64
Animal Crossing (JPN only)
Diddy Kong Racing
Banjo-Tooie

Anything else, regarding the Rare/Microsoft owned games or other 3rd Party titles for N64 is up in the air..

And I do hope they also tackle some of the not yet rereleased games like the Cruis'n sequels as well...

I don't think they're gonna bother with the Stadium games, and if they do it feels like it would be more a separate release by the Pokemon Company, made to interoperate with Pokemon Home in the same way the Gen 1-2 releases on 3DS were.

Only SUCKERS sleep on the gem that is Shin Chan Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation The Seven Day Endless Journey

In normal circumstances, I'd also say that... but apparently rumors say they want to have it out when the GB/GBC app is also available so they can use data from them (assuming the mainline Pokémon games will be there too)

I'm pretty sure that has never been an actual rumor and more of a wish.

Nintendo running out of games fast, interested to see whether they reset back to NES again for no reason, or whether hell freezes over and they actually start releasing Gamecube games on NSO.

So who are the Koizumi/Takahashi successors for future directs? They probably aren't retiring anytime soon, but outside of them I think Nogami has seen screen time for splatoon content.

I know during the Wii U era they had other directors/producers in their directs, not so much in the switch era.

For the NES there's a handful of other HAL titles that could come to the service in addition to Mach Rider:

Air Fortress
Vegas Dreams (the "prequel" to Vegas Stakes)
F-1 Race (JP only but probably has minimal text that they could theoretically release it like they did with Super Picross)
Adventures of Lolo 2 & 3

Granted, I think of these only Lolo 2 has seen a VC re-release but that hasn't stopped some of the more recent NSO updates.

Also, could we get the OG Fire Emblem in the US? I forget if the localized version that was in the eShop for a brief period was actually a translated ROM or if they were doing something in the emulator to insert translated text on the fly.

When 3rd parties opted out and released their own collections of their retro stuff it really hurt the appeal for me personally. No castlevania, contra, mega man, turtles, shatterhand, turrican ect. I had a regular sub for awhile but that was merely to play smash with my nephew.

Speaking for myself I've never seen much value in this service to be fair. I've got the NES/SNES/Genesis/Core grafx minis and they do me just fine.

Tbh this is why the hype for N64 online never made sense to me.There just weren't a whole lot of games to choose from.Nintendo was basically being carried by rare that entire generation. Most big third party titles that gen jumped over to the Playstation.

3rd parties (outside small publishers , SEGA/Atlus and maybe Konami) matter little for the NSO service and the hype for N64 NSO existed with 0 expectations of RARE games coming. What happened is more than they ran out of the big games fast because 1st party wise they didn’t even put out that many titles

I mean, they've still got Game Boy and GBA to add before GameCube. One or even both are prolly gonna be revealed in the September Direct.

Nintendo 64 games are fun

I’m scared of Nintendo releasing GB only at first and months later GBA, honestly I couldn’t care less about 80% of GB titles most have aged too badly to be enjoyable to me

N64 games will always have a special place in my heart. The library is not deep, but the top of the line stuff goes up against any system's best IMO. The app was datemined for 38 games so if Nintendo keeps up with one game a month, we will be getting updates through May 2024.

Assuming GB/GBC games launch this year and GBA launches Fall 2023, that should keep the NSO busy with updates well into 2025.

Past Nintendo consoles keep getting picked on in this thread. Yesterday it was GameCube, today it’s N64 lol. I do think they strangely front loaded the best of the N64 games for something that will probably be supported for a while with a drip feed. Probably the right call since they want to get people on board with $50 a year as soon as possible, but yeah still a strange thing to now look forward to.

While I’ve continued to avoid the expansion pass since I still have my Wii and Wii U hooked up there’s still quite a few great games to potentially be excited about like Smash Bros 64, the Mario Parties (MP3 in particular is a lot of fun), Pilot Wings, and Donkey Kong 64. Rare has a bunch of great games to pull from too if Microsoft is playing ball like Perfect Dark, Diddy Kong Racing, and Banjo Tooie. I don’t think they’ll set the world on fire, but I hope we get Bomberman 64, Bomberman Hero, and Bomberman Second Attack (the latter sadly never made it to virtual console). I know it’s not super well regarded, but Bomberman Hero is one of my favorite N64 games (throwing bombs is super fun!) and Second Attack has a co-op campaign and an excellent multiplayer mode.

Yabuki/Kawamoto? It's hard to tell, but as you said that's not something to really discuss for now.

There’s no way Nintendo could get San Francisco Rush for NSO, right? But I can dream. That game was huge for kid-me.

I have a perfect Direct announcemment for you.

Takahashi says that's all for todays Nintendo Direct but then suddenly his phone starts ringing. He is confused and says: Oh, pardon me and picks up the call. It appears that Koizumi is on the phone since he says: Oh, Mr. Koizumi we are filming the next Nintendo Direct. Could you please call me later? But it looks like Koizumi is asking Takahashi about something very important. Koizumi clearly wants the call to be on the loud speaker. Koizumi speaks: Hello everyone, I am Yoshiaki Koizumi from Nintendo. I know it's been a long wait but I think Mr. Takahashi will show you one more thing today. Both of them give a send-off. Takahashi: Oh well that was unexcepted, anyways this is the last trailer. New 3D Mario appears on screen. 2023 release date. Direct ends.
in few days

There are two big reasons we're likely never seeing Pilotwings 64 ported to anything ever again.

"Nintendo released game on Switch that lets you recreated 9/11" is probably a headline NoA wants nothing to do with.
It seems like an easy problem to fix though? Of course I'm not a dev and I have no idea how hard it would actually be to remove them.

Not to be “that guy” but I bet Nintendo also does not want headlines saying things like “Nintendo has removed the twin towers” or whatever.

Like I know this is a long shot bad faith headline but they’re so PR risk averse that it’ll probably just never happen and on this one in particular I don’t blame them.

Wow, I didn’t remember the Twin Towers were in there. When I think of that game all I remember was hang gliding / jet packing around the big island map.
