We've not had a full fat September Direct after a skipped June Direct, which makes me wonder what we could get this year, assuming Nintendo don't pull Partner Showcase 2.0.

Fire Emblem and Zelda seem like the likeliest 2023 titles to show. 2023 should also be about time for Good-Feel's next contracted game from Nintendo. And, of course, there's the EPD 8 and EPD 10 games in the works. I'd be very surprised if we ever got all of that shown at once, though.

Direct showings always need to be contextualised within the broader rhythm of Nintendo's announcements. One of the reasons we had February and June 2021 Directs packed with announcements was because each time, the release schedule was mostly empty at that point in time. By last September's Direct, the schedule was full up to January, and so they didn't reveal as much of their own content. Currently, they haven't announced much software since February of this year and 2023 only has one game pencilled in, so September would be the time for them to begin tipping their hand. That being said, they'd only really need to cover the first few months of 2023 because a February Direct could do the heavy lifting for reveals for the April through July period (which happened in 2021 and 2022).

We came into 2022 knowing that Pokemon Legends, Kirby, and Triangle Strategy would launch early in the year. Maybe a September 2022 Direct gives us a similar picture - Zelda, Fire Emblem, and something else.

"True Zelda fans don't enjoy BotW"
"BotW lacks that Zelda magic"
"something Ubisoft towers"

Even typing these ironically makes me wince.

Zelda was literally the first game i played when i got my NES in christmas 1989. I do consider myself a fan of the series.

Tell me who posted such things so i can point at them and laugh.

I dunno. I love BotW to death, I had the greatest experience with it, played it for over 200 hours but I'm 100% sure that I would have loved it even more if it had more traditional Zelda elements.
There is certainly room for improvement to bring Botwo to a 11/10 experience if you take BotW as a 9/10 baseline.

I like BOTW, Skyward Sword HD, and the Links Awakening remake. Looks like I'm a fake Zelda fan. I like all the "bad" ones.

Its okay, truth is there are no bad Zelda games, and even if there were and you would like them, being a fan of Eddie Munson corrects everything.

All the mainline games are at least a 9/10 in my book. Considering their time of release of course.

I tried really hard to like BotW but it's not my cup of tea, honestly. Not a bad game by any means, tho. Kinda hoping of BotW2 to regain some "Zeldaness" from previous titles but I'm not very keen on it.

They showed LM 3 in September 2018, one full year before it was released. If they are really confident they can show 1 EPD title that is H2 2023 and not necesarily early 2023 title.

I agree. I just dislike the absolutist, hyperbolic statements I was mocking - or in the case of "Zelda magic", something so subjective that just parsing it needs a whole conversation.

I also think the whole thesis of BotW is to strip it of traditional elements, as if every step of the development process they said "we did this before, let's do something different and see what happens". For better or worse. I admire the adherence to it even if I also want classic elements.

Also BoTwo is a cool acronym. Stealing it.

Let me hit you all with a real hot take:
Botw was a 10/10 game but it was a fluke, the zelda team has no talent and that's why they're taking 6 years for an iterative sequel in the same map, they know that when the game releases they're gonna get exposed and lose all the credibility they gained with botw.

I mean, Skyward Sword and BOTW are the antithesis of each other, each one does the things the other doesn’t, so they can’t both be the “bad” ones, you should be golden!

Also, Links Awakening remake is great, who’s saying otherwise??

People hate the artstyle and think it was a pointless remake

That art style is awesome and I am hoping Nintendo will use it on the next 2D Zelda game.

I was actually sad when that game was announced because I had just finished a replay of the original Link's Awakening, so I knew I was not going to buy it. But those visuals almost made me do it.

Great analysis. Apart from Botw sequel which is kind of dated, we know nothing about Nintendo's plan for 2023 in terms of 1st party. Next event should be a huge one and not too far away. I'm myself hoping for a visit to old IPs.

Jiro Horikoshi (fictionalized Ghibli version) is the GOAT actually

borderline Mary Sue character

I wouldn't say to expect a huge event in September; simply that the odds of 2023 reveals are fairly high. But it might only be one or two things, depending on Nintendo's scheduling - they can and have waited until February in the last 2 years to show people their first half line up. I'm not sure we should expect that to change.

One reason I think Fire Emblem and Zelda are likely is both because they have loud, enthusiastic fanbases, and because I think they're first half releases. Easy way for Nintendo to generate excitement ahead of 2023.

EPD 9 working on a Mario Kart Tour might be the biggest insult by a major gaming company in the past decade. I literally screamed "FUCK YOU" in 2019 at my screen. I knew it wasn't set in stone that they would do a ARMS 2 but the hype they created made me think they were just going to surprise us with it anyway. Absolutely unacceptable to do this to us. Once they knew a normal console game from them was expected, they should've just done it. Even after Takahashi was kind enough to talk about Wave Race which is probably non existent.

This crosses the line into bad take territory in my opinion.

i think Nintendo are waiting right now because for some reason they are banking and harping so much on xenoblade 3 for some reason, Although it looks like an average anime to video game iteration in my opinion. They honestly seem insecure about that game not selling, and are advertising it way too much.

they Will probably reveal a lot of their 2023 lineup in late 2022, as they know Pokemon is gonna sell regardless if there is a new Mario or Zelda game coming out in the next few months.

when they announce 2023 games, it also has the purpose of keeping people interested in the switch, and not jumping ship to another platform.
if there are good and exciting games for switch in 2023, it also deters people from going to the competitors.

not knowing anything about software line-up for 2023, in 2022 is not a good strategy, and Nintendo probably knows this. They announce certain games like botw sequel, bayo, Metroid prime 4 ( even though they probably knew it wasn’t gonna come to switch) to maintain their base. which is why they need to entice gamers for the upcoming year as well.
some heavy hitter announcements are bound to happen before 2023.

This is just the usual Nintendo marketing of focusing most of their marketing attention into the next upcoming game. XC2 overperformed Nintendo’s expectations so now they are putting more resources into it. If Nintendo thought it would underperform they wouldn’t spend millions on marketing like they are doing lol

Every night before bed I pray that:

EPD 1 is producing good games
EPD 2 is producing good games
EPD 3 makes a good Zelda sequel
EPD 4 is making basketball
EPD 5 is making a good Splatoon
EPD 6 is producing a new Punch-Out!!
EPD 7 is slowly rebuilding
EPD 8 is making 3D Donkey Kong
EPD 9 is making Wave Race
EPD 10 is making Pikmin 4

EPD 8 is a 3D Mario tho, am pretty sure about that. You have to pray better.

Also are you gonna ignore that 4 is making, beautiful stinky game? Okay

This inflicted psychic damage on me.

Yeah I don't think they would ever skip 3D Mario. And as far as we know they have a 2D game development. So for me personally this could mean 3 things:
  • 3D Mario
  • 2D DK
  • 2D Mario in collaboration with EPD10
3D Mario is a given.
I think a 2D Mario with EPD10 could be realistic if EPD10 needs some staff for Pikmin 4. So I still don't 100% believe in a DK unfortunately.
