yeah when you give time and resources to great developers they can make beautiful games, who would have thought

We’ve had an entire generation of games that have been given time and resources, so when the image quality of a new release looks like a step up, it does raise some questions.

No, this isn’t footage from new hardware, but it does look very good. Reminds me of when DF were surprised at the recent BotW snippet in the game’s delay announcement video, saying it didn’t look like anything they’d seen on the existing Switch. Perhaps there’s some FidelityFX 2.0-like advancements at play?

The thing is that we have had this situation happen almost every year since 2019, especially when it comes to games made by NLG,Monolith Soft or Nintendo EPD

Have we? Astral Chain was 30fps and this is 60 (?), and looks arguably cleaner. Monolithsoft games have abysmal resolution and mediocre framerates. Nobody was saying XCDE was a Switch showcase - it wasn’t. The only one I might agree with is EPD and I think my point from DF re: Zelda still stands.

In the end we’re still saying the same thing. This isn’t new hardware, but they’ve somehow squeezed even more out of TX1.

We had the same folks saying Mario+Rabbids 2 was Switch Pro footage.... and when Splatoon 3 got revealed. So no, this rhetoric persists for serveral years now.
Basically since the Pro leaks started to happen.

people weren't questioning the hardware when The Last of Us released, years after Uncharted 1 on the same console, and looked significantly better. But it's always a question when it comes to the Switch.

Splatoon 3 looks better than Splatoon 2, BOTW2 looks better than BOTW, Xenoblade 3 looks wayyy better than Xenoblade 2, Mario+Rabbids 2 looks better than M+R1 and so on

It's just people trolling at this point and this rhetoric is getting tiresome

My Monolith Soft commentary had more to do with people saying some XC3 footage was from Switch pro earlier this year than XCDE, EPD is also for Splatoon 3 (last year)

I'm not doubting that the whole 'must be Switch Pro' rhetoric has been in circulation for some time, but that's nothing to do with what I said.

What I specifically was getting at was that I think first party titles have notably stepped up their game on the current Switch. XCDE looked downright bad by my tastes, and if XC3 manages to actually look good in handheld mode while having 7 party members on screen and more impressive effects, then that stands out to me. If Bayonetta 3 is 60fps and 720p (or better), while looking better than Astral Chain (and substantially better than Bayo 2) that stands out to me. If most of Breath of the Wild 2 looks as clean as that clip they showed us, then once again - stands out. This has not been an 'every year' observation for me.

I was given the impression somewhere (might've been the future hardware thread) that it's not as common to see the types of leaps we saw back in PS3 era from start of the generation to the end of the generation. HD development is no longer green field, hardware and tools have matured, probably among other reasons. I just wonder if this is 'regularly scheduled improvements' in working with the platform, which goes counter to the above, or if there's something else at play. For example - could the tech NERD had been working on could actually be applied in some way to the existing platform? (Maybe this is more of a discussion for the future hardware thread...)

Chill out folks. At the moment I'm just personally impressed OK? I never said 'this must be Pro'. I might find that I'm less impressed when I play them, and it's just the trailers painting them in a very positive light.

I mean isn't this normal? Tools and engines get optimized, devs are more familiar with the hardware and so on... hardly unique to the Switch.
It's just tiring to see the Switch getting singled out with "potential Pro footage" commentary without basis.

It is the same shit with "impossible ports" that turn into "unplayable ports" real quick as soon as they get announced. See Witcher 3 or Doom for example.

Late-gen PS4 games also look better than exclusive early gen PS4 games, even if the difference nowadays isn't as big as in PS3 case (that was a really extreme case) there are still differences

i bet base switch havent reached not even 75% of its graphics potencial
Isn't that the case for all consoles? I don't think even Nintendo will bother to push it more than what BOTW 2 will do. Only other possible case would be Prime 4 but that is just guess work

BotW1 was hamstrung by needing to run on the Wii U, and the port to Switch was relatively late in development.

I am not surprised whatsoever that BotW2 looks better considering it is from one of Nintendo's lead dev times with sufficient time and budget.

Folks have selective amnesia about the Switch's capabilities and the games that have been released on it in the past five years. Could probably slide in a BotW1 screenshot / video alongside BotW2 ones and we'll still hear the 'must be Pro !!' commentary.

I have played more games on Switch than I have on any other system in my life, other than PC. I still think Breath of the Wild (1) is one of the best looking games on the platform when you factor in it's scope and performance. If they make a substantial leap over it in the sequel, then consider me even more impressed at the results.

We have yet to see much gameplay from Breath of the Wild 2 that would give people that impression. Most of what they've shown has been heavily scrutinized by enthusiasts against the base game. Outside of the sky areas, it's mostly left people wondering 'what's changed?'

Game theory:

SyluxHunter and SamusHunter are the same person and SamusHunter was right before but when she got something wrong she made an account on her break which turned out to be SyluxHunter
That would explain a lot. Both accounts are weirdly aggressive towards other insiders.

I agree. Out of all the games that I have played, either on Switch or at razor sharp fidelity on PC, I'm still drawn to BotW1's palette, its cel-shaded flowing grass fields, its autumn forests, brightly lit tundras, ancient ruins and cozy towns with the entirety of Hyrule on the horizon.

I'm just being cynical about people's behavior. :')

Good god gimme BOTW2 right meow

I love the fact they’re letting the modders look into restoring cut content for halo 1 and 2 and I hope they go into 3 next. Not sure if you heard about that
No. Not really. Sounds interesting as hell. Halo was my favorite franchise for a very long time before I found my way back to Nintendo in the early 2010's.

If the end of this year had literally just a hardware revision and a Breath of the Wild resolution + performance patch I'd be happy. I lent out my physical copy, that person had their stuff stolen including my game(s), and I've been looking for a reason to buy it again and play a third time...
