StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

Immediately after? lol How would anyone know that you actually knew about those and aren't just "It's true"ing your way into being right?

Yeah, I should name the game and developer now and get them in trouble, right? It's just as easy for me not to name any game and keep it to myself. There's no benefit for me to say the games, you realize that, right?

And the idea was to name the game after the hardware was announced.

So you would agree that NVN2/ Drake is the platform you've heard about and the one devs possess devkits with games slated for 2022/23?

In that case I understand that there is not more for you to dive into them what's already discuss here and I hope the new information you'll hopefully be able to share at one point actually shines light on branding and release timing, as that's the big unknown then.

I do believe that to be accurate.

Now that we're midway through April, I'm starting to have some doubts on a 2022 release.

Nintendo released a new Switch model last year, and Bloomberg and other outlets were all over it last spring. This year (so far) has been completely quiet.

I would have to think that if a brand new model was set to be released just 6 months from now that certainly we would have a new Bloomberg article or reporting from some other major outlet about production and manufacturing starting up. But we haven't had anything.

If we go another ~4 weeks or so with zero news, that I think it's safe to say that a 2022 release would definitely be out of the picture.
I think everyone, Mochizuki included, is treading more carefully to avoid a repeat of last year.

That said, I do think it's likely that something is likely to come out, possibly even an official announcement, by the end of May.

This just kinda piqued my curiosity, sorry, but the comment about protecting people’s jobs - is there actually substantial information about this hardware or the games coming to it being shared there?! Like, there are more leaks out there than the rest of us are aware of?
No extra leaks or details, but somethings can be taken out of context and misinterpreted, which is better controlled in a different environment.

This is a public forum where anyone can see what we type and write, of course it’s smaller scale here than say ResetERA.

Still, it’s just an extra safety measure.

I simply saw them comment of being wary now as they see we are aware of their conversation. But rest assured to them, if they are still observing, everything is fine and we are not connected to Nintendo. 🤭

Well, except our uncle's.

I take your point about what constitutes a leak, definitely. But your post makes it sound like there are devs working with those kits that are posting in the discord/wherever (in a vague, NDA way)? Am I reading you right? Just very cool if so.
No, there are no devs posting in the discord.

Oh for sure, I follow you there. Think maybe I just misinterpreted your last paragraph on that post.
No, there are no devs posting in the discord.
Gotcha. Well then in that case I'm very confused by that other poster's response to my question about info in the discord lol (("If there are devkits and software being developed. . . Someone is working on those things. What constitutes a leak? Two folks under NDA comparing notes on how to deliver solutions on the same product under NDA, when it hits the enthusiast arena, or when it hits the general public?"))

(only not tagging them because I tagged them earlier upthread and don't want to annoy someone with too many pings!)

I believe that’s their assumption on the matter.

Yeah I think most outlets are being much more cautious in their reporting this time. Even if they have heard stuff from the production side (hell, we just heard about something from a factory in China, whether or not that's totally trustworthy) I think most outlets will be doing a far more thorough job validating any info and making sure it matches what they're being told by developer contacts.

Something I’m wondering about with the new Switch is how big it’s going to be. Will it need to be a bit thicker or is there confidence they’ll be able squeeze the hardware into a case the same size as the current Switch?

I have no special sources, but if I were them I'd put a high priority on people being able to use all models (Lite aside) in all docks, even if not all of them can do 4K output. Less confusion, and easy for adopters of the new thing to show it off for friends or family who have an old dock hooked up.

Actually, the volumetric clouds in XB2 are a combination of semi-transparent 2D layers and 3D noise/fog. The devs used special shading on certain layers to give the appearance of self-shadowing within the clouds, and they used the noise to give the "clouds" the appearance of volume by filling and blending the spaces between the layers. The billowing/dissipation is procedural. It's pretty convincing from afar but falls apart upon close inspection.

The game still uses a traditional skybox with artistic clouds for far viewing distances.
Very interesting thanks for taking the time to explain it to a laymen like me! They look really good imo even pretty close.

If people want to doubt that such hardware exists, let them. The devkits exist. They have been distributed. That's 100% fact. I know of games being built with the kit. Such things are not a matter of debate.
I'm from the land of Nessy and I grew up with a few people who ended up at the energy drink palace in Edinburgh past and present. They all know I'm eagerly awaiting the next Switch since 2019 and find it funny but recently one of them told me that "a new Mario Maker" had entered their realm and they laughed when I got excited. The new console is 101% real.

This person wouldn't bullshit me (childhood friend). He said they were messing with RDR Online when pushed. When it releases is anyone's guess knowing Nintendo. Could be late this year could be late 2023 who knows. I should note the same person told me in 2019 that GTA V was planned for Switch and they had seen it running so...

If late this year, then Metroid Prime HD would be an awesome launch title. It'd demonstrate a huge leap from the original 20 year old Gamecube release and be a graphical showcase in 4K 60 fps. Also some nice synergy with Dread releasing with the OLED last year.
That's exactly what I thought. They released OLED with Dread last year, I think it would make sense to release Drake with Prime HD this year. If it's in October, there will be Xenoblade the month before and open world Pokémon the month after.

Something I’m wondering about with the new Switch is how big it’s going to be. Will it need to be a bit thicker or is there confidence they’ll be able squeeze the hardware into a case the same size as the current Switch?

My gut says they are going to want to keep a functionally similar form factor.

Switch Drake will not be showcase with a remaster/remake like Metroid Prime 1.

It must be a new game that pushes OG Switch to its limits and Drake shows how does that game runs with 4k resolution/higher settings. The best candidates are:

  • Xenoblade 3 (September 2022
  • Pokémon Violet/Scarlet (November 2022)
  • Zelda botw 2 (spring 2023)
  • Metroid Prime 4 (???)
  • Next 3D Mario (???)

Nobody discussed 12SM when we were working under the assumption of an 8nm chip. The best case scenario was seen as 8sm, with as low as 4 sm seen as likely.

The leak is confirmation the chip is substantially larger than anyone here thought, and makes 8 nm an unlikely node.

It also Indicates Nintendo has much bigger plans for this chip, than running switch games in higher fidelity.

I have been thinking the same thing lately. My guess is that, during Drake's life they wont have Wii U games that few played to fill some holes here and there as they did with the Switch and to obviously ease third party ports and as such fill those holes. I think they really really want third party support this time.

Remember, every new Pokémon gen launched with a special edition of a new console. And with the exception of Gen 3 (RS), all of them launched on either new gen handheld or the mid gen refresh:

Red/Blue: Game Boy Color
Gold/Silver: Game Boy Advance
Ruby Sapphire: GBA SP
Diamond/Pearl: DS/DS Lite
Black/White: DSi
XY: 3DS/3DS XL
Sun/Moon: New 3DS/XL
Sword/Shield: Switch/Switch Lite
Scarlet/Violet: We have to wait and see...

GTA5 Switch was once a thing.

We’ve been led to believe that it’s a very substantial effort. Sony used Demons Souls as a showcase, why wouldn’t it be acceptable for Nintendo to do the same?

At the moment I have much higher expectations of it visually than Violet / Scarlet.

I don't even know what a new Mario Maker could possibly feature. I love the franchise, but I feel like it's reached it's limit in the 2D realm.

Red/Blue: Game Boy (1996, 2 years before Game Boy Color)
Gold/Silver: Game Boy Color (released in 1999 as GBC enhanced titles with backwards compatibility)
Ruby/Sapphire: Game Boy Advance

Still a strong pattern, would be good timing for ScaVio.

Because he's making it up
I know, but the requests from fans for a new MM has come up before, but I just don't know what a new game would even offer. The games have sold well but I think they've reached their limits as far as 2D design goes.

3D worlds would be the next step, but that honestly seems a bit too ambitious.

remake doesn't really matter. as long as it shows a clear difference between Drake and Mariko. 4K/60 vs 720p-900p/60 (or 30 if I got my way) would be a show piece

Check my message again, I was talking about special edition consoles. No special edition Game Boy or Game Boy Pocket was released for Pokémon, it started with this with Pokémon Yellow:

Nintendo-Game-Boy-Color-Pokemon-Yellow

For silver and Gold Japan got this. No Special edition for the west.

Every new gen Pokémon game came out with a special edition of a NEW CONSOLE, meaning Scarlet and Violet will have their own Special edition Switch Pro.

Intel and/or Samsung definitely have the opportunity to catch up with TSMC, as long as Intel and/or Samsung don't mess around.

I did read, in which case I don't understand what you meant by "launched with" here:
Remember, every new Pokémon gen launched with a special edition of a new console...
Since I interpreted that as "at the same time when Gen I/Gen II launched..." (like when Metroid Dread launched with the OLED), and the special edition consoles you mention above came after launch dates for these games, I'm not sure what pattern you're talking about. I do see the pattern of new gens being released with new consoles or console refreshes, though.

If Drake comes out this year, I'm not expecting any special editions, as far as I know no special edition of a Nintendo console has come out the same year it releases.

The first special edition GBC did launch on the same day with Pokémon Yellow. Red and Blue did not receive one as they were the first games. Only games that did not launch at the same time with their sp edition console is Gold and Silver, sp edition GBA came out in 2000, one year later. Rest, Gens 3-4-5-6-7-8 they all have launched with a special edition (best one imo is the DS Lite with DP).

Scarlet and Violet will definitely launch with a Sp Edition console, no doubt about that. And it won't be a Lite for a third time. It'll be the Switch Pro.

Rockstar having one of these kits would be a dream scenario…

I’m wondering if by “a new Mario Maker has entered their realm” the poster is meaning a devkit? A “Mario Maker” being a Nintendo development platform. He uses ‘code’ elsewhere in the post. I can’t imagine his Rockstar friend knows about this devkit and MM3 for some reason. (I also don’t think MM3 is a thing, as you say.)

The problem with GTA5 for Switch wasn't performance. It was related to cost and some issues with GTA Online due to Nintendo's poor online infrastructure.
So anyone can chime in here, but when we talk about GTAO and Nintendo’s online infrastructure, which specific part do we think was the issue?

Nintendo’s obviously not hosting the game itself or providing networking, so is it the backend of how they handle friends? Interactions with other players? Switch’s WiFi chip not cutting for a world on the scale of GTAO with 12+ players at a time?

iirc the Switch may have to path through Nintendo's own infrastructure to validate it's on a Switch????

Also, ofc the Switch's WiFi being notoriously unstable most of the time doesn't help even if that's not the case atm.

Switch Lite launched in September with Zelda Link's Awakening and OLED in October with Metroid Dread. Both years had Pokémon in November.

Doesn't matter if it's a remake, if it looks stunning for what it is and is 4K on Drake it would be a perfect fit. As another person mentioned, Sony used Demon's Souls as a showcase for PS5. Let's not forget that Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are originally Wii U games, and both are showcases of what Switch can do as a portable console.

Metroid Prime is one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time, it's coming on its anniversary year, made internally by Retro with a long development cycle. Nintendo is trying to grow it as a brand too. They used it as a launch title for the last revision, I don't see why they wouldn't do the same again. It's not a Game Cube port, it's a heavy effort remaster/remake. Wind Waker HD is a showcase of the Wii U despite being a GCN remaster too.

Majora's Mask 3D was the launch title of New 3DS.

I never mentioned performance as being the issue. But alluding to the other stuff in your response. As I stated in that post I doubt a new Switch is gonna change that.

Because Metroid Prime remake is probably designed from the ground up for Switch. Demon Souls was designed from the ground up for the successor.

I only have Oled, but wifi is worse than every piece of electronic with wifi that I have ever used.
I think Hermii's talking about in comparison to the Nintendo Switch, not other electronic devices with Wi-Fi connectivity.

No cap, but I roll my eyes when people bring up "online infrastructure". It's a vague catch all that doesn't explain what exactly is the problem. Nintendo has had poor online services, but the switch is home to damn near every kind of online game, sometimes not even using Nintendo's servers

Because Metroid Prime remake is probably designed from the ground up for Switch. Demon Souls was designed from the ground up for the successor.

And I personally don’t believe we’ll see a single first party game that’s exclusive to the hardware if it releases this year. Metroid Prime is as good a candidate as any

The wifi chip in the switch is fine, but the placement is not and nor does it help that it seems like it is capped by Nintendo.

In my case, the wifi works better on Switch than ps4.

But the most of the people i know only use ethernet on ps4.
