Credits rolled on Death's Door, now do we go for the secret ending or not...

I’d say no. Death’s Door’s post-game bonus ending just a lore dump about the ancient history of the world, specifically how it ties into to the developer’s previous game , and collecting all the necessary bits is not enjoyable (beyond just the seeds) unless you’re really into collectathons or “completion”. There’s also just one minor boss battle and one challenge room, so not much of note in terms of gameplay content.

tbh I think Legends Arceus is going to be the best selling game of 2022.

Willing to avatar bet on it tbh

thats_bait.gif

The only known releases this year that could come close I think are Horizon 2, Elden Ring (I don’t think Souls fans are nearly as many), and BotW 2. Pokémon is huge enough and people seem super hype for it.

That should be the mascot of ST5.

I'd be willing to make a terrible blender animation with it too.
“This thread stinks”. You should totally rip off that old EB advertisement.

Wrong Sony exclusive, I think. God of War Ragnarok will likely be their best seller this year (if it ends up releasing), but I don't think it will come close to challenging Legends (or BOTW2)

Between the Xbox fans talking about how Microsoft should next buy IOI, Crystal Dynamics, and Sega and the PlayStation fans claiming Sony needs to buy Square Enix and Capcom, I'm so tired.

Some people need to go outside and touch grass.

John Locke baybeeeee
That line hit me so hard the first time I named my son after him. No lie.

Microsoft should purchase that.

Xbox sure as hell doesn't need anyone else lol. Sony you can make the argument for, since Microsoft is gonna dominate in that space soon.

Meanwhile Nintendo and Meta (because VR domination) will just be watching with popcorn.

you know why it's called "meta"

because I never meta vr headset I didn't dislike

except labo baby that's the future!!!

We now know what February's N64 game is. What Genesis/Megadrive games are you all hoping we get in February?

19 games are currently available on Genesis NSO:
  • Altered Beast
  • Castlevania: Bloodlines
  • Contra Hard Corps
  • Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
  • Dynamite Headdy
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Golden Axe
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • MUSHA
  • Phantasy Star IV
  • Ristar
  • Shining Force
  • Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Streets of Rage 2
  • Strider
  • Thunder Force II
  • Toe Jam & Earl

Sega games that have a good chance of an NSO release:
  • Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
  • Alisia Dragoon
  • Alien Soldier
  • Alien Storm
  • Beyond Oasis
  • Columns
  • Comix Zone
  • Eternal Champions
  • Golden Axe II
  • Golden Axe III
  • Kid Chameleon
  • Landstalker
  • Light Crusader
  • Phantasy Star II
  • Phantasy Star III
  • The Revenge of Shinobi
  • Shining Force II
  • Shining in the Darkness
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 1
  • Sonic Spinball
  • Sonic 3D Blast
  • Streets of Rage 3
  • Super Fantasy Zone
  • Thunder Force 3
  • Toe Jam & Earl in Panic on Funktron
  • Vectorman
  • Virtua Fighter 2
  • Wonder Boy In Monster World

Third Party Wild Cards: Games that have previously appeared elsewhere.
Out of the wild cards above, I think Mega Man Wily Wars has the strongest odds at an NSO release.
I'm thinking Shining Force 2, Comix Zone, Beyond Oasis, Vectorman, and Ranger X. Now I just have to sit back and wait until I'm proven to be 100% wrong.

Next thing you know we'll hear news of a Nintendo-Sega merger and with that Bayonetta will officially be a Nintendo character, there will be more systems available for NSO, and we'll finally get a mainline SMT character, or Jack Frost, in the next Smash Bros.

it's a bubble, and an awfully stupid one at that
Ehh. Doesn't change the fact that Quest 2 is still outselling all the other VR headsets by a significant margin, and I don't see that changing any time soon.

Also, why is everyone on gaming forums so against VR becoming a big thing? It's the next meaningful evolution of the gaming landscape and it's starting to become mainstream. If it was gonna die out, it would have by now. And I really hope it doesn't.

Wdym Meta is dominating the VR space right now lol
I have literally no clue what this sentence means, it reads like a foreign language to me, lol.

As for VR, I've... never tried it? So I can't really have any major opinions on it. Unless VR really goes big or starts getting games that I actually want to play in it, I'm not really interested, honestly.

Been a while since I played it but the Streets of Rage 3 soundtrack seriously sounds like Yuzo Koshiro was trying his best to melt the Genesis‘ sound board. My god.

I'm saying Meta (Facebook) is the driving force of Virtual Reality gaming right now. The Quest 2 is selling a ton. Your opinion on it is up to you though.

The Quest 2 is the ideal setup, a wireless headset that doesn't require a console or PC, but the games aren't there IMO.

Reading this (and some quick googling) is telling me that I'm very behind the times, so that partially explains it. For one, I vaguely remember Facebook deciding to change to "Meta", but I honestly thought that was some sort of joke. Apparently not. Also, while I've heard of the Oculus Quest/2, I had no idea it was affiliated with Facebook in any way, let alone that it was MADE by them, huh.

This is making it very clear that while I keep pretty up to date on most gaming and tech news, I know absolutely nothing about VR, lol

it's a big tech loser scam like nfts, I hate it and it sucks

the silicon valley side of this industry is the fucking worst and has destroyed society
Huh? Most VR games are Indies, and great ones at that. What makes VR any different than Xbox, Playstation, or Nintendo? It's literally just a different format of view. This opinion literally makes zero sense at all.

Speaking personally, I can’t really support a gaming peripheral that forces the user to completely isolate themself from reality for any amount of time. I won’t judge anyone who wants to do that, but it just doesn’t mesh with how I want to live my life.

Also, I have yet to see it transcend novelty status. It’s how I felt about motion controls, though obviously VR is a more impressive technological achievement.

Also also, fuck “Meta” and everything that bears their trademark.

facebook is trash, that's all
Oh for sure. There's no argument there. But Facebook isn't the only one doing VR, they're just the current leader. Hopefully some day that'll change, with Playstation or Valve or another company taking the reigns. But for now, we're stuck with the Zucc.

nintendo investing heavily in vr is one of the doomsday events that would make me pull the "buy up sony trinitrons and only play retro stuff until I die" lever

Some people like a long draw of beer at the end of a work week. I like a good quote-a-palooza!

My brother and I speedran New Super Mario Bros. Wii today. We died twice in the final battle but it was fun and we finished in about 48 minutes and 4 seconds, which is probably less time than it’s ever taken me to beat a game.

That's a super impressive speed run, kudos! NSMB Wii is really under-appreciated. Incidentally, I really enjoyed the speed run challenges in NSMBU. I hope the next mainline 2D Mario has something like that included. It was cool to see medal challenges like that in the main campaign in SMM 3DS too.

Feel better soon!

Touching on the snow topic, I live very close to Syracuse, New York, so feet of snow is unfortunately a very common occurrence for approximately 6 months of the year. I actually prefer apartment living around here...driveways would be brutal lol

Hey I'm from WNY originally! With the pandemic and everything I haven't been back in ages though. Small Famiworld. I was just thinking recently about that strange pizza style in Schenectady where they put the sauce on top of the cheese....

Paper Mario is done. It’s a really good game. Overall I didn’t enjoy it as much as TTYD or Super Paper Mario, but it was really fun and definitely worth my time playing.

Glad you dug it! I really think every one of the PM games is somewhere between really good and amazing, especially taken on its own merits. Even Sticker Star. For one thing the jazzy OST of that one is supremely awesome. I bet outta resident TOK OST superfan @Raccoon would dig it.

the only DS series left that i want on switch is picross 3D

||and also cing to be resurrected and make hotel dusk 3||

I'm really hoping we see more Pushmo one day.

Is sonic unleashed considered one of the good sonic games? I saw it just got on sale on Xbox and since it got FPS boosted not too long ago, kind of want to check some of them out

I had gotten generations for free on there ages ago

Yes. Sorta. The Sonic parts are some of the best of the modern "Boost" era, and while the Werehog parts aren't bad, they do feel a bit out of place and slowly-paced. As long as you go in knowing it's essentially two games duct-taped together, it's good stuff. I really liked it. And at 60fps it aughta look awesome.

There’s apparently a big backwards compatibility sale going on now on Xbox. Might splurge on that and a few others if the prices are good. Unleashed is five bucks

Thanks all for pointing me in the right direction on the BC sale. I just got to play a game today (OoT) for the first time since the end of November, so the XSS I got for X-Mas is still in the box. I'm excited to try out Sonic Generations on it as my first real 3D Sonic. I feel like I've been planning that for a year plus now though, lol. I definitely plan to make Tunic my first new release XSS game. Cute mascot games forever!

Mario Land 2 has some of the most interesting level settings in any Mario game I’ve ever played. A graveyard, a beehive, an anthill, outer space (and Mario wears a space helmet!), inside a whale.. they’re so inventive and fun. The improvements in gameplay and graphics from the first Mario land are striking. It’s a truly great Mario game. The only things holding it back are the short length, and there is some slowdown when there’s more than one enemy on screen.

You gave me some serious nostalgia reading this post. When I used to see the SML 2 box at KB or wherever the box art would fill my imagination to the brim. Especially the boxing shark. And then when I actually got it and discovered it had legit save files, it felt like an evolutionary leap over SML. The SML series was really filled with unbridled creativity. The music for those Zones started playing in my head as you mentioned each one. I'd love to see a return to the bizarre world theming of SML.

Well after a few marathon sessions while watching the playoffs, I have beaten Captain Toad again! I did everything except for finding all of the 8-bit Toads. I don't have nearly enough patience for that right now lol. Still a great game and it makes me want Captain Toad 2 even more.

Honestly, now I want to play Odyssey again lol

I did my Captain Toad replay just to get all the gems in ... I can't believe it's been nearly two years. April 2020. At the end of that I discovered I needed to do the checklist item for each level to unlock the remaining secret levels. So I definitely plan to go back and do that at some point. I hope we get a sequel built from the ground up for Switch. It was a nice touch finding El Capitan Todd in Odyssey.

omg

OMG

I just realized what you did there. I missed them when I was reading before because I was too confused. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

Oh phewwww I was so worried it crashed and burned hard and nobody got it 😆

oh I just use the highlight -> translate feature on my phone

and yeah it’s what apparently everybody except me read last year

my guys are region-locked to a country I no longer live in so old credit cards were my easiest way to navigate

I think I can make a secondary account for the Wii U but I might be a little boned on the 3DS front

physical games it is I guess!

That sucks, I'm sorry to hear it. Thanks for the translator tip, too. Is it possible to buy eShop cred in the currency the 3DS is linked to and manually add it to that account?

This is so wild to me. These pictures don't usually get me but like ... I have such vivid memories of getting the 3DS in late 2011. It's one of the things that seriously pulled me back into gaming after 5 years or so of much less interest. My wife was really into some of the DS games so I got her a 3DS with 3DL packed in. I took her on an impromptu day trip from Vermont (where we were living at the time) to NYC. We had to get up super early and we got back sooo late and it was snowing and the roads were poorly paved and this 711 coffee was just barely fueling me.

But it was so nice to go to NYC and I think this is the last time we went there which means somehow it's been a decade since we've been. We went all over the places we used to frequent when we lived in Queens, got some amazing Neapolitan pizza 🍕 in the East Village, went to Times Square and Chinatown. Got this legit Oaxacan food with cactus leaf tostadas. It seems like just a few days ago. At the end of the trip I got the wrapped 3DS out of the trunk and gave it to my wife. We still have it now and the R button is a bit wonky but it's still working otherwise and it's seen so many hours of fun and joy. I'm really glad I caught that boat back the world of gaming when I did.

thinking about when nintendo did this

Wiimote-with-Motionplus-Attach.jpg

Just reorganized the closet under the stairs, and had a few of these plus the magnum condoms they gave with them. Replaced most with the incorporated gyroscope, but still have these if needed. Actually prefer the longer length it gives over the incorporated model if I’m being honest.

I can definitely see the appeal of the longer length but for the add-on never worked as well as the incorporated version. Like I really struggled with it in Wii Fit and Skyward until getting the built-in one. So I'm glad they made both versions.

Did you know Raccoon that Japan's first unambiguous reference in written history dates back to Chinese text written in the 1st century BCE where it is known as the land of Wa? Japan and Korea did not their own writing systems at the time so what little history we know about these countries prior to that is only known through Chinese sources. Japan is described as a land across the sea with many tribes and it was often regarded as a mythical place. The legendary Queen Himiko comes from these Chinese records.

And that is your weeb lesson for the night.

That is legitimately super fascinating to me. Please keep the weeb history lessons coming. Did y'all know that in early 1600s Korea, the king liked the japchae his cook made so much that he promoted the duse to secretary of treasury? If you eat the dish you can see why though. It's a delectable tangle of stir-fried sweet potato starch noodles.

Don't you know the rules?

you gotta go fast

🌭

To be honest mine looks bigger (and I'm assuming because it's a male), but in all fairness from the picture of yours I cannot really see her size. But either way mine is bigger than most cats, and I definetely see the similarities with yours from your picture hence I think they're the same breed, but who knows. I'd show you if I knew how to add a picture here.

(Apologies for such late reply, my work is crazy this time of the year).
One easy way to add a pic you took on your phone is to go to http://abload.de, upload it for free, copy the direct link, and paste it in IMG tags here. You could also click the image icon at the top of the post editor and paste the link in there and hit enter. It's the icon right next to the hyperlink one (chain icon).

I do love the new ‘Rare Racers’ line of pins that Fan Gamer has (currently consists of Banjo and Timber). Certainly had me thinking of a new DKR style game from Rare. And yeah, with all of the new franchises in play, Crash, Spyro, and others would be great for it too.

Those are so cool. I really like the Timber one. I'd be so jazzed to see that character make a comeback. That DKR 2 rumor for Wii U had me hoping for a long time.

I don't know that it was ever properly debunked. It had the ring of truth to it for me.

OK

So I have an entire week off from work next week. What should I do? Should I:

A) Use the time to get a head-start on preparing for my near-future goals: studying for my Driving Theory Test, organising and tidying my stuff to downsize, and

B) Focus on relaxing and recuperating at the end of a tough Christmas/Holiday season. Finish Horizon Zero Dawn - in anticipation of the sequel - and start Pokemon Legends upon its release. Watch a few movies, and maybe have a day out in a nearby city.

C) A healthy mixture of the above that allows me to be both productive whilst feeling more relaxed overall

OR

D) None of the above lol

It's in your hands! lol it really isn't because D is by far the most likely outcome

I feel you Plum. I know you've mentioned a few times your struggles with being productive with your time off. Try not to put pressure on yourself, if you feel like the day's getting away from you just schedule in some of the things you want to be sure to do for fun. 🙂

I got Paper Mario: The Origami King and Yakuza: Like a Dragon for Christmas a year ago. They have yet to come out of their plastic wrap.
TOK is so damn good. You're in for a treat!

Fuck it, I just pulled trig right now on NSO Expansion Pack. These games mean so, so much to me. I might not play them right away, but I have a two week vacation planned for May, and playing my childhood favorites portably while watching the sun rise in the Outer Banks sounds like paradise.

@Skittzo I'm striking while the iron is hot, fresh off the Majora's Mask NSO announcement, to post my (very relevant) favorite piece of gaming merch - my collector's edition Majora's Mask statue!

The build quality is insanely detailed, and there's even an ominous-as-hell "glow in the dark" mode.

Great timing! That is a really cool statue. I've see it before but I didn't know it glowed in the dark. It's so crazy to think it's been 8 years since the 3DS version. 8 years?? Like...how can that be. 😯

fun lil banjo fact

The church in Mad Monster Mansion was based on the St. James church, located in Twycross, England - home of Rare at the time they made Banjo-Kazooie

View attachment 123View attachment 124

notice the entrance to the building has its own little side roof
and organ at the back of the room, the wooden pews, and even the rafters on the ceiling! :0

That is so rad. I love learning behind the scenes stuff like this. Please keep 'em coming.

where is nes pinball

Playing NES Remix really have me an appreciation for that one. Plus, cute penguins! 🐧

I have my two hour infusion today. Most of the other patients are noticeably older than me. Most just nap, browse on their laptops, or listen to music. I think I'm the only one who ever pulls out a Switch to play. So I feel really young and out of place

And I'm gonna be really out of place when I'm sitting there playing Banjo Kazooie!

Hey I think it's really rad that you can just be yourself and play your Switch during your treatment. A lot of people are so concerned about what people think that they won't game in public at all. Heck I know people at my job think games are infantile so I try not to talk about or play games there and reading your post has me reevaluating myself there.

Man I miss being obsessed with that show. I will tell you, it was excruciating waiting a week for a new episode. They do cliffhangers like nothing else...

Lost was such a crazy cultural phenomenon. I got so sucked into the early 00's internet fandom, especially the ARGs where it was tough to tell for sure what was made by ABC and what was fanmade. It really made the wait for the next episode all the more engrossing.

@Skittzo I almost forgot to add my video game merchandise post. here is my full amiibo collection. All North American amiibos are included. I am just missing Dark Souls :/

RzYnwhA.jpg
Man this is a freaking amazing collection. Kudos. Are there any non-NA ones you're hoping to find for a good price? I have a smaller collection, mostly NA, but the one I regret not getting before it shot up in price is Qbby.

Gotta admit I’d love to play Alyx. Not because I care about VR, but because I’m starving for more Half Life/Portal content. Hoping to borrow a VR headset one day.

I've only used VR at a friend's, but I'm convinced having people laugh at you as you move around like a lunatic on crack is half the point. It's only isolating if you want it to be.

nintendo investing heavily in vr is one of the doomsday events that would make me pull the "buy up sony trinitrons and only play retro stuff until I die" lever
In a similar vein, a Nintendo Land 2 where the GamePad is replaced by a VR headset is my dream local multiplayer game.

One thing is for sure, I'd much rather see a new VR headset than another "OMG there's more pixels" game console. I'm so sick of people who think graphics and resolution is everything. I can't even tell the difference between 1080p and 4K, much less 8K. Like can't these game companies try anything else? For example, haptic feedback is great. Gyro is great. I love the duelsense touch features. Motion controls are awesome. But games look fine as is.
