I've never played Ocarina of Time

I am fairly certain we're probably gonna have to wait until all of the N64 games they announced for NSO are available before they announce the next slate of games.

If they continue the one game a month pattern they seem to have going, we should have them all by August this year, right in time for the September/Fall Direct where they'll probably announce the next batch of N64 games for the service.

I've never played Mother/Earthbound and i really want to, but my hopes of them at least coming to NSO are decreasing every day

This is why I hope we see Diddy Kong Racing on N64 NSO. There's a new generation of young Nintendo fans who have never played it. It would be interesting to hear their thoughts on the game.

Unlike other Rare games, DKR wasn't part of Rare Replay. Even the lackluster Nintendo DS port is old... roughly 14-years-old.

According to Wikipedia, Diddy Kong Racing was the 8th best selling N64 game.

Said port never even came out in Japan. Meaning it's been unavailable to Japanese audiences since 2007!

It was.

Donkey Kong 64 and Diddy Kong Racing being ~5 million sellers (or thereabouts) really highlights how strong the series was after Donkey Kong Country (which I think did 9 million?). Four titles selling around 5 million in a 5 to 6 year period (DKC, DKC 2, DKR, DK64). Donkey Kong wouldn't get back to those heights until DKC Returns on Wii, which did over 6 million copies.

It really is a franchise which would benefit from timely investment and a timely release while Nintendo have a big, enthusiastic audience...

Edit - the other point to make here, to return to Emily's original point about a generation of players not having access to Diddy Kong Racing, is that it's now been 2 decades since the Donkey Kong IP had a sustained period of success. The IP was present in numerous guises throughout the last 2 decades, but DKC Returns was the only game that launched under favourable circumstances. The Tropical Freeze port has done fairly well on Switch, too, but the series feels like one just waiting for a shot back in the limelight.

It's pretty well established by now that Nintendo barely had and still barely has any idea on what to do with DK after Rare's departure lol

It really goes to show how, in addition to maintaining good sales, it's also really important to have a consistent developer and home for a franchise. It just feels like DK's reign came to an end after Rare could no longer make games for it. It had a short jolt of life under Retro's wing but even they've moved on for the time being.

series from smash ultimate iā€™ve never owned a game (note: iā€™m including VC games).

  • Earthbound/Mother
  • ROB
  • Ice Climbers
  • Duck Hunt
  • Tekken (played Tekken 3 on arcades)
  • Splatoon

Maybe Iā€™m a bit dinosaur but I also have played all NSO N64 games except for WinBack.

wait, Pikmin 3 isn't the best Nintendo game

I forgot about Wii Sports Resort. that's the peak
where do I snag it for under $100 CAD, I really want to join the hype wave of a decade past

I really hope there's some truth in those rumors about EPD Tokyo working on a DK game. They worked on previous DK games, so if Rare isn't involved it would seem like the natural choice to carry on with the franchise.

This is why I shake my head whenever someone downplays Rare's importance to Nintendo.

Rare's successfully re-invented Donkey Kong for a modern audience. I consider that to be one of the most important events in Nintendo's history.

25 years later, Rare forever changed how people look at the Donkey Kong IP. (For better or worse)

Rare was probably the biggest reason the N64 didn't have GCN or even Wii U level of sales

Looking back at Celine's N64 sales list on the last page, four of the N64's Top 10 best selling games (Goldeneye, DK64, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo-Kazooie) all came from Rare. Nintendo would of been totally boned that gen if they didn't have Rare as the backbone of the N64's first party lineup.

Still waiting for a good soccer game on the Switch, since FIFA is an abject disaster.
We need a Sega Soccer Slam port
Yeah I'm curious about that too.

Here's the remaining list of confirmed post-launch games for N64 NSO. I'm wondering if Nintendo will release Kirby 64 before or after "The Forgotten Land".
  • Mario Golf
  • Pokemon Snap
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
  • F-Zero X
  • Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
So we do have a vague idea of what's coming to N64 NSO soon.

Japan also is getting Custom Robo V1/2 but I expect those will probably double up. Put me in the Kirby next month category, lining up his first 2.5D adventure before his first 3D one makes too much sense

I know Rare was already making divisive games by then, but imagine the GameCube era with more Rare games ... would have been interesting to see.

You absolutely can get True Pacifist with your first playthrough. I got it. The wording people use is weird and makes it seem like you need to do it on a second playthrough. If you do all of the True Pacifist requirements on your first playthrough, then you simply have to reload your save after beating the game and backtrack to where the True Pacifist stuff triggers.
I think you can just start back up right before the ending and then go back to compete some of the stuff to get pacifist. Not remembering all the details, but I donā€™t remember having to do an entire new play though.
But that involves first beating the final boss, which I am completely unable to do lol

Donkey Kong overlaps a lot with Mario which is probably why we don't see many DK games. Structurally, the 2D DK games are most similar to the 2D Mario games. DK 64 is based off Mario 64's template. Diddy Kong Racing is Mario Kart 64. It's one thing if you have a dedicated studio like Rare or Retro working on the series parallel with Mario but it is harder to convince the Mario team to stop working on Mario to make a new DK game. Mario is the bigger name and since the DK series isn't too dissimilar to the Mario games, it makes sense to just keep making Mario games.

Just finished Dusk on Switch. If you like old school style shooters, you're gonna love Dusk. Perfect game for Switch or Steam Deck.

I will probably play a few hours of Eastward today before the weekend ends.

A lot of Rare's games during that period were having major development issues. Especially thanks to the Microsoft buyout.

Grabbed by the Ghoulies was originally a GCN game that became an Xbox game. Dinosaur Planet was originally a new IP, then had Star Fox slapped on and then became a GCN game, where Rare literally couldn't even finish it in time because of the buyout (it was announced literally one day after SF Adventures was released!). Perfect Dark Zero was orginally a GCN game that became a Xbox game that then became a 360 launch title. Kameo was originally an N64 game, then a GCN game, then an Xbox game, and then an Xbox 360 launch title.

It was a really turbulent time for the company, and sadly that's probably why Nintendo didn't buy them out when they had the chance. It can be said that ultimately Nintendo picked the right time to drop Rare, but Microsoft picked the worst time to purchase them.

It will be interesting to see if it is true EPD have taken Donkey Kong back and built a team up for a new game. Donkey Kong was Nintendo's foundation in the game business; Rare reinvented it and Nintendo may yet bring him back in a way which (pun intended) apes Rare's work with the series.

Though I wouldn't say no to a spiritual successor to Donkey Kong 1994 from the GameBoy...

Talkin about Dinosaurs. Why is there no real good Dino- Game on Switch? ( Jurassic World Park Simulator looks kind of okay i guess...). Where's my Alien Isolation- like, but with Dinosaurs???

You should maybe think about fixing that greivous greivous error.
who has the time though

I need to replay pikmin 3, nintendo's second best game, and by the time I get around to finishing it kirby the goty will probably be out

DK64 is a lot more like Banjo Kazooie than it is like Mario 64, and I also don't think DKC is that much like 2D Mario. Like sure they're all platformers, but other than that I don't think there's that many similarities

Undertale intimidates me because it feels like the proper way to play it is as a pacifist, but it seems that playing that was is difficult. Iā€™ve never started it because I feel like Iā€™ll screw up and then Iā€™m playing the game ā€œwrongā€.

Woke up with a god awful sinus headache /migraine and dealing with it all day. It feels like I'm being punched repeatedly

I wanted to have a relaxing day with the snow and play skyward sword in my bed. Good God this pain is awful

Banjo Kazooie is based off the Mario 64 template. And while you can nitpick the finer details, structurally the 2D Marios and the DKC games are very similar. You go from level to level, world to world, left to right, all while overcoming platforming challenges. The games are targeting the same core audience. It's not like the difference Mario and Zelda or even Mario and Metroid.

I don't know if this is quite true. Of course DK and Mario will overlap, but how do we explain Yoshi? 2D to 2.5 D games with less than 50% selling power of what DK has. My guess is that Nintendo:

1. Doesn't know what to do with DK.
2. Just don't want to.

If we ever get a 3D DK, whether it's from EPD or Retro or whatever, I really hope they get David Wise for the soundtrack again. His music is really good, obviously, but even more than that I'd love to see what kind of music he would come up with for a 3D DK, since DK64's music was done by Grant Kirkhope.

With all the Kirby hype I decided to play all the old one, Kirby's Dream Land was a lot of fun though it took me literally 30 minutes to complete. Kirby's Adventure is even better, the copy abilities are just so good and it actually feels like a full game. Would absolutely recommend going through it on NSO.

Huh. I didn't realize so many people here haven't played Banjo-Kazooie. It makes sense considering how long ago it released.

Anyways, it's cool that some of you will play it for the first time on NSO.

I've got to be honest I'm looking forward to BK more than I am looking forward to Pokemon Legends: Arceus. And that's a lot.

Banjo-Kazooie is my comfort game. I can pick it up and 100% it in one (long) sitting anytime. I'm currently playing it on Gamepass just to pass the time until I can play it on NSO.

Now if only Nintendo would give us a release date....!

I need to order a laptop

all of my shit is aging horrifically, I leave videos to render overnight
Yeah my old one was 7 years old when it borked. That's like 250 in people years. It still worked incredibly well though, that video in the OP only took like 20 minutes to render.

As someone who started playing video games in the mid 90s, itā€™s always weird to me to think of people who started much later than that. Nintendo has such a huge legacy library that is probably daunting if you didnā€™t grow up with it.

Now that I have my laptop does anyone know of any good free video editing programs? Like the ones that let me edit explosions and lava into videos of my kids playing? That kinda thing?
Question. How does one post pictures from a phone here? Since I've been in bed with that awful sinus headache, my new cat we got back in October joined me in my bed and keeping me company while I rest
I usually either upload them to discord or twitter or imgur first then link that here.

The game makes it abundantly clear early on that combat isn't the way to go (it feels really unsatisfying mechanically). Outside of bosses the combat system isn't that punishing, especially with a controller, and I say that as someone who generally doesn't like bullet hell games. I wouldn't skip out on it just because you're afraid of doing it wrong. I know the online culture around the game is pretty toxic at times, but the game gives you two different ways to play. It really wants you to go pacifist (or as much as you can) but it also allows you to eschew that and try to play like a typical JRPG.

I also botched the first run but I think it's really intended for you to kill in your first 20-30 minutes with the game. Otherwise, the whole theme behind the game is pointless.

Thanks for the reply . Ill have to remember that for future raffles. I am just not in a good state to fool around with that today
