Kirby has a pretty regular release cadence though, and always has, and is partially controlled by HAL. I don't think the comparison with Paper Mario, which appears every four years or so, is relevant.

Plus, I can't help but wonder if Intelligent Systems are currently putting more resources into Fire Emblem, meaning less available for Paper Mario, which results in a remaster or remake for the latter series.
Can’t say I entirely agree. Kirby does have a more consistent release schedule, yes, but those games are typically much smaller in scope. We haven’t gotten two full priced console Kirby games within a year since Epic Yarn and the original Return to Dream Land on the Wii. You could maybe count the 3DS port of Epic Yarn in 2019, but given that it was on a dead console at that point, I don’t really think it’s quite as similar.

Regardless, it’s not exclusive to Kirby either. Nintendo dropped two Super Mario games within 6 months of each other in 2019 too. I just don’t see Nintendo being so strict that we can only get one Paper Mario game every 4 years, regardless of how much effort it takes.

Also think it’s too early to say anything about how much manpower IS is putting into Fire Emblem. We don’t have the credits for Engage yet, so it’s entirely possible that Gust and/or KT make up the brunt of the manpower there. That just leaves the rumored Genealogy remake, which we know pretty much nothing about.

So we really are having year of the Coobers

Y'all better buy these re-releases so we don't have another 20 years of "buh buh buh buh the coober games were the best games and Nintendo should make them for all of time"

Yoshis-safari-boss.png

Lol I loved this game. I vaguely remember it but It was basically a Mario FPS/Rail shooter hidden behind a silly title like Yoshi's Safari or something.

I don't really hate Coobers, I'm just hiding my secret shame

I think I know what the next Mario game is:

I'm very excited for the Super Mario Movie so I watched The Menu on Christmas because I wanted to see how Anya Taylor-Joy can act, I'm assuming Mario will play the Ralph Fiennes role in this game

What would be your beginners tips? Just talk to everyone to find out what to do / where to go?

I’ve always wanted to play through it but I get really anxious at the thought of the timer and it seems like sort of an older style designed game in terms of not holding your hand at all.

Thanks.
Honestly, my beginner tips would be to remember that it's okay to die on the first cycle, or to fail a side quest and have to do it all over. Majora's Mask is a difficult game, and one whose world is among the best ever put to the medium. Take your time in speaking to virtually every NPC after you get the Bomber's Notebook as Young Link. I encourage you to speak to a bunch of them during the prologue as well, but really your main goal at that point should only be to make it through the first cycle. Frustration/despondence is an inherent part of the experience thematically, so make sure to take it slowly and immerse yourself in the world's plight and their day-to-day schedules. There's some powerful stuff in there.

Oh, and learn the Song of Inverted Time ASAP.

It's Friday, so naturally it's time for my Friday predictions.

I had previously forgotten that minis are shadowdropped (embarrassing, I know), so I'm going to firmly say that a Nintendo Direct mini will be released on the Tweeting hour Tuesday, January 10.

It will open with Metroid Prime Remastered, which will fill out the fiscal year in March.

Everybody's 1-2 Switch will make an appearance; I see it filling a niche more similar to Clubhouse Games or Mario Party than other casual games, making it a natural fit for a presentation. I see it as a tremendous fit for the April lull before Zelda.

Bing bong, wahoo, it's Mr. Mario for a game in June. I think it might be a new 2D platformer. Yippee!

We Love Katamari!

I think we might luck out with another 99 game in Q1 or Q2. I think a great, albeit uninspired, choice would be NES Remix 99.

It might be too early, but I suspect the fourth wave of Mario Kart support will be special. New characters, kart parts, battle maps, or other extras might justify early promotion of the March launch.

There would, of course, be more. F-ZERO, finally? Rhythm Heaven? Tomodachi? I suspect much will wait for a later presentation, but there will be some fun surprises.

More Katamari always gets a Yeah! from me.

Super Mario Taxes with *Free Yoshi DLC coming after launch

*Free Because Yoshi evades making an appearance in the game

If you're hoping for a 2D Zelda anytime soon, you better hope that either Grezzo has been working on another project besides Jet Dragon (which they've been hiring for almost two years) or Nintendo has found a different development partner to work on it.

Completely random tangent, but one of the possible third party reveals could be a port of Ghost Trick, since it was recently rated. I think it only listed PC, but I can't imagine that the game wouldn't work with Joycons while docked.

Apropos of nothing, I wonder how Ace Attorney 7 is coming along. The Capcom ransomware attack from late 2020 specified that GAA staff would move to AA7 after that wrapped up, but it also mentioned that AA4-6 ports were on the table based on series performance, and we know GAAC did relatively well, so they may prioritize those first. AA7 started pre-production in 2019, but between the pandemic and potential 4-6 ports, at this point I'd say it's 2024

This is relevant because Ace Attorney has historically debuted on Nintendo handhelds so it could be a potential Direct reveal

Hopefully Athena finally gets the focus she needs as her current biggest problem is that she is in her third game yet characterwise is only on her 3rd case as the lead attorney. (I still say Dual Destinies should have put Athena as the main character during the final case once we know who the true bad guy is). Wouldn't be that hard either, unlike Apollo and his infinite backstories he pulls out of nowhere, we actually do have a dangling plot thread with Athena (her meeting Pheonix for the first time in Europe and helping her somehow which causes her to switch her focus to being a lawyer) which can easily become its own game.

hello kevin! temp ban was not working for me at all

normally I post, go do work, come back to the red circle with number in it. temp ban broke me because without red circle I kept checking the site for no reason
I get it!

Glad you’re back! I mostly lurk these days, but always happy to see your posts!

January 2018 was something else man... Like even Nintendo themselves did something they almost never do and teased all of us involved with hype, leaks and insiders, by posting a now historic effigy of a burning chibi robo.
Is that still the only time Nintendo has played into the fervor around Direct rumors and speculation? That was so much fun.

I'd take an Athena game if it lets them put some distance between AA7 and the lore mess of 4-6. With Yamazaki no longer at Capcom, I'm expecting the next game to take something of a different direction anyway, and the success of GAAC ought to alleviate some of Capcom's worries about releasing an Ace Attorney game that sidelines Phoenix Wright.

last two games (clubhouse games and mario party superstars) were actually only one year apart. In fact, NDcube has put out a game on Nintendo consoles every year since 2010 aside from 2019 and 2022, so 2 years is the longest they've gone in quite a while. Since 2022 was one of those gap years I'm sure something's coming this year- no guarantee it's mario party but i imagine/hope they want to build on superstars and either do similarly styled new content or more remade content
Oh wow yeah seems we probably are due for a game from them then. I don’t know what other IP they work in beyond those two or if they have more than one team, but I realllly hope it’s Mario Party.

The last console to get a third Mario Party was GameCube, wasn’t it? That’d be awesome to be back in that era lol

I think there's a pretty decent chance we get a Mario Party spinoff. Doubt they put out a third mainline game this soon, so something experimental like Star Rush or (god forbid) 9 would make sense.

In the prediction thread I think I predicted an Animal Crossing party game from NDcube and I still think that will happen haha. Although, I'll never ever say no to Mario Party game even if that means being unsatisfied with no DLC lmao.

I don't think Nintendo would release two party games with Mario in the same year (Mario + Sonic 2024 Olympic Games is apparently happening) so Mario Party doesn't make much sense for this year IMO.

We’re uh, talking about Mario Party right?
"Mainline" in the sense that it's a traditional Mario Party. Guess I could've worded that better, but the point is still there.

Mario & Sonic isn't a lock to be 2023. Could easily slip to 2024. It's happened before with Rio.

Now that I've had a gin and tonic, I can safely ascertain that next year's Mario titles are going to be 2 or 3 out of the following list:

  • New Mario Paint
  • New Mario & Luigi from Nintendo and some indie RPG studio
  • New Mario vs DK from NST
  • Mario Dentistry
If only lol

I think Mario & Sonic would overlap more with the Mario Sports games than Mario Party despite their minigame setup; in fact the two have overlapped in more years than they haven't!

2007 - Mario Party 8, Mario Party DS AND 2008 Beijing
2012 - Mario Party 9, London 2012 (3DS version)
2013 - Mario Party Island Tour, Sochi 2014
2016 - Mario Party Star Rush, Rio 2016
(no overlap: Vancouver 2010, London 2012 Wii, Tokyo 2020)

I don't expect Mario Party to show this year anyway, nor Mario & Sonic. I don't get why outlets are presenting that job listing as implying a Mario & Sonic title when it seems to be for a multiplatform Sonic-only Olympic Games title.

Nintendo stopped publishing Mario & Sonic themselves with Tokyo 2020 also, leaving it to Sega, but that's not too important if I don't believe there will be another one anyway.

2023's summer Mario franchise release should be Captain Toad 2.

Year of the Coober intensifies

upon further consideration im updating my 2023 predictions a bit

January- FE Engage
February- Kirby RTDL DX
March- Bayo Origins
April- MK8 DLC and Style Savvy
May- Zelda TotK
June- Mario Sluggers and Splat 3 DLC
July- MK8 DLC and Prime HD
August- Big Xenoblade DLC and F-Zero GX remaster
September- Mario Party and Grezzo's Jet Dragon
October- Pikmin 4

I wonder if the Reddit guy post was a way to say that Prime 1 will be in the first half of the year, i mean everyone expect Metroid releases now in September-October-November

These are a good predictions but it won't be a Mini Direct. This honestly is enough to put together a General Direct and I don't remember if they ever revealed a new first party titles in the Mini's anyway.

iirc for retail games Mario Tennis Aces and Clubhouse Games were fully new games revealed in minis, Tropical Freeze was also revealed in a mini

they also published twewy final remix in some regions which was a mini announcement

so it's not totally unheard but i agree that something like a new 2d mario or prime hd would definitely be saved for a full direct

yes, that's right but none of these is a first party developed game. Tropical Freeze might be since Retro is owned by Ninty but it was still a announcement of the port.

Minis can definitely have new first party games, there just aren’t too many of them. If we got a proper Mini, I don’t think it would be that bad since the goal should just be get us up to Zelda. It’s the March and April window that are a bit fuzzy. If it doesn’t happen next week, mini or proper Direct, week 4 after Fire Emblem is next in line and that’s normal Direct territory.

I think the heart of competing interests at play here is that there is possibly a game or two before Zelda and they should announce them soon, but do they want to overshadow January and February which they’ve already laid out pretty well. I feel like they wouldn’t want to overshadow Fire Emblem by showing Zelda in particular right before launch.

I think a good Mini for now with a full Direct in March/April is the best call. Next week is certainly going to be interesting to watch however it shakes out. Either we get a presentation/announcement or we can make better predictions.
