It’s so much more fun when you have insiders. I miss the days when there were many insiders.
How many of them were real insiders though? That’s the part where I’m not entirely convinced the “old days” were better.

I agree about the first part, though. Always sucks to be in the dark about these sorts of things.

Our Captain Tsubasa 😢

Damn, I generally had some hope that the Direct would be next week and would feature one final push for Fire Emblem, but now that they've just randomly released an Overview trailer I feel like the week of the 23rd is the absolute earliest it could happen.

Nintendo slept through this week, but the stage is suspiciously empty for next week. Feeling good about a Direct / Direct Mini slipping in there and I’m leaning towards the latter. Get us through May by announcing another March game and announce the April game too. Then come back in March/April with a proper Direct covering most of the rest of the year.

I personally believe there’s no chance we get a direct next week, but it’d be such a pleasant shock if we got one

so that Reddit account definitely struck out for the first time, right? with nothing having happened this week
Reddit leaker definitely threw us a for a loop.

I guess I gotta go Team February then, Pokémon in January though (gotta spice it up somehow + SwSh's Expansion was announced on Jan 9)

Did the reddit account ever give a timeline? Or did we all assume because they posted that something was soon?
No timeline though I think they always leaked stuff a day in advance(?)

The Reddit post was made on December 30. There's no way there was going to be a Direct that week.

I mean, of course there wasn't gonna be a direct over the weekend, nor was the first week of January a likely time frame, but the reddit poster always leaked stuff a day in advance so that's why (some) people expected it this week. What's difficult about this exactly?

Direct guessing is just for fun anyways so

it's an assumption based on the immediacy of their past teases. maybe they had a new source this time or something, but personally I'm going to put them out of mind

Who said it was difficult?

But it's weird for people for people to believe that there would be a Direct this week because the Reddit user has a history of posting a rumor a day prior to a Direct even though they posted that rumor over a week ago. But now the Prime rumor is a miss because there is no Direct this week even though the rumor never specified a date and they made the rumor last week so if we were basing things off patterns, then the Direct should have happened last week.

Team February often espouses that they cannot lose, for they either are correct or get their prize earlier than they expected. This never sat right with me, but only in my self-inflicted exile did I realize why: Team February may get results, but Team January wins in the moment. Every 11 PM in Kyoto, every reset clock, every moment wondering why we haven't gotten a Tweet yet is its own reward. We're here to bravely stand up, not for what we believe is safe and comfortable, but instead for the notion of a better world.

Februarians are eager to point out that there hasn't been a general Nintendo Direct in January in the Nintendo Switch era. Why then, I posit, does it feel like that's what's supposed to happen? Simply put, because it is! This thread is descended from the Nintendo Direct Speculation threads of yore, themselves descended from the greatest Nintendo moment of our time: the unchallenged hype of January 2018. It may have been a Nintendo Direct mini, but it was news that we wanted and got when we wanted it. For better or for worse, that is the dream of any person.

Geoff Keighley has abandoned us. Rumors of new hardware have misled us. The world itself has become cold and uncertain. In retaliation against the reality of our present condition, I rally you all to take a stand against the self-assured complacency of Team February through a proud and principled alliance with Team January!
I genuinely believe it's more likely to be in February, but in most other ways I am really Team January. I want Team January to win. Not in a "ha! I win either way, suckers!" way. I want my Team February, my own ostensible team, to lose!

But yeah everything else you write is basically true lol

Team February is definitely the heel of Direct speculation

nothing wrong with that, playing the heel is fun and people love it

I just don't want to get worked into a shoot, as it were

Also welcome back @Raccoon. In the *checks calendar I've scrawled messily on my thigh* five days you've been gone there's been an honestly incredible number of people saying they miss you lol

I believe in Team January/Raccoon

Nintendo Direct mini, January 11

if there's another March game, which I suspect there may be, or an April game, which I definitely think there will be, we'll see it next week

What is difficult about a simple "leaker has a (certain) history -> direct imminent" thought?

You're kinda making a few leaps in logic honestly. I never stated Prime remakester is a bust, I simply made my (first) post in the thread jokingly saying that I was gonna join Team February. And if you're referring to other people saying that, honestly, it's no big deal so maybe just ignore them?

i honestly...never felt like January is the month. its not like with other times, where we have essentially nothing except 1 port for February. We have FE in full force with a brand new entry, we have a Kirby port, we know that we will have Zelda in the first half... we have Fing Octopath Travler 2 in February.

We really don't have a blank slate, so i don't see a urgency for a January direct. February? then we can talk. And by now i don't think we will get a Zelda blowout in a direct.

I see a February direct that shows spring and first glimpses of summer.

Uh, what? You are taking this way too seriously. I was merely pointing out the inconsistencies in logic. From my stand point, if you believe in the Metroid Prime rumor on Reddit, then there hasn't been any indication that the rumor is false. No indication that it's true either, but it's not outright deconfirmed yet. They Reddit user never specified a date or week so there being no Direct this week isn't proof that the rumor is false.

And if you did believe there would be a Direct this week based on when the rumor was posted, well you already had to break the consistency of the patterns anyways since this week is not the day after the rumor was posted. So why couldn't it be next week or the week after?

PM'ing you so we don't clog up the thread. (not that we can't solve this in a message or two)

I thought Engage was next week!

I put in the wrong PTO hours lol

Whoops. Guess I’m playing some old games next week during my break 🥲

Did Nintendo remake Metroid Prime with the sole intention never to release it but use its existence to annoy insiders? I think thats what they meant when they said they were investing more money in development, they know 1 quarter of Mario Kart sales is enough to cover the shortfall

Are we getting over 200 fools who still believe in this so called January direct?
Find out tomorrow (the answer is yes)

or...just maybe... it would fit better in a spot where a) there is a lack of games and b) MP4 is ready to start. maybe they want to use it to push new hardware, or maybe they want to fill their release schedule when they are preparing for a new platform next year? endless possibilities. all good reasons to keep it for now.

I'm not an insider but that decision sounds like they are intentionally trying to torment me specifically.

"The greatest trick the devil Metroid Prime 1 Remake ever pulled was convincing the world it didn't exist."

Personally I think this what Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD Switch ports are for. Nintendo had them done and dusted in April 2017, handled by a single intern wearing a Tingle costume.

They'll appear as post Tears of the Kingdom cross-gen titles in 2024 and 2026, when every journalist has given up predicting their imminent release. Twilight Princess will end up becoming a swansong title for GameCube, Wii U and Switch gen 1.

D—DI-DID I SEE THAT RACCOON IS BACCCCKKK!?
hello kevin! temp ban was not working for me at all

normally I post, go do work, come back to the red circle with number in it. temp ban broke me because without red circle I kept checking the site for no reason

Choose your fighter, Zelda 2024:

1) new 2D Zelda using Link's Awakening style visuals. Dungeons return but it's non-linear.
2) toon-shaded Minish Cap remake. Toon-shading more like the concept art for the game, so not necessarily Wind Waker esque, including black ink outlines on character models.

January 2018 was something else man... Like even Nintendo themselves did something they almost never do and teased all of us involved with hype, leaks and insiders, by posting a now historic effigy of a burning chibi robo.
