Prediction:

Nintendo announces a 40 minute long direct.

5 minutes long: General Direct begins with a 5 minute long trailer for the new Super Mario Bros movie.

25 minutes long: Shigeru Miyamoto appears and talks about how his idea of a Mario movie began before the bastardized SMB movie was made.

5 minutes long: trailers of Nintendo games releasing for the incoming half year

5 minutes long: trailers of third party games

there is your general direct

/s

I hope for some surprises in the direct like RDR2

Call it assholish behaviour, but i certainly don't want to see Aonuma again saying it's too early to talk about BotW 2 and here's something else instead.
Two disclaimers before I go on a rant: nobody wants this game revealed and released properly more than the people who have been working on this for ~5 years. I wish the devs (and all devs for that matter) nothing but health and good luck.

Disclaimer two: on one hand the transaction is simple: Nintendo offers a game. If we like the value proposition we buy it. That's it. However, that's not really how this works if you think just a little bit beyond standard company-customer transactions. Which is why I appreciate the times when Nintendo has gone out of it's way to be transparent to customers.

This being said, in my opinion Zelda 2's communication with fans has been borked, and it's reaching the point of memeability.

1). E3 2019: sort of kind of announcement? Seems very quick after BotW, and looks iterative in nature. Many people think the game is far along because of this teaser - when in reality this was part of a recruitment drive. Not sure how much of this was the fans drawing conclusions and how much could've been avoided by Nintendo.
2). Early 2020: COVID messes stuff up and all development is impacted.
3). September 2020: Age of Calamity announcement: Aonuma appears! It's not BotW2 and development is ongoing. Good bit of communication and appreciated.
4). Early 2021: Skyward Sword HD announced. Aonuma appears! Still no BotW2. Alright, makes sense, COVID and all. We'll wait for E3.
5). E3 2021: Aonuma appears! Bare minimum trailer. Still very iterative - Bokoblins, Moblins and Taluses again? Music seemed truncated. No title. Vague release date. Alright, more is coming soon so it's fine.
6). More didn't come. September '21 and February '22 Directs had no Zelda.
7). Early 2022: Aonuma appears! Delay to Spring 2023. Alright, delays happen. We'll get some juicy info in the June Direct right?
8). June 2022: Despite having plenty of first party material for an E3 (Bayo, Xeno, Kirby, Splatoon) there was no first party June Direct. So no Zelda. Not sure if on purpose, but it's another BotW2 ergh? moment.
9). September 2022... We'll see. Aonuma appears with some good communication around BotW2 finally? Or another half-trailer? Or nothing at all?

One thing's for sure: I'm now in the "only get hyped for Zelda when it's released" camp, because this has been an exercise in frustration :S . COVID has been a factor of course, and Drake as well, in all likelihood. But it also looks like the regular weird-ass Zelda communication that has hung around the series since ~1997: announce too early & delay.

Personally, I don't think there will be a direct this week.
But if there is a direct this week, it will be announced tomorrow.

Just not feeling it this week.

Also, I've been MIA since I started a new job and having my second child. Busy times. I still lurk time to time.

I'd love to have some in-depth insight on the development of BotW and its sequel. Something tells me that we vastly overestimated how far along it was when they revealed it in 2019.
I don't think so. If anything it was late 2021 at earliest (even before COVID hit) since Zelda game for 2020 was Age of Calamity. Only 1 real astimate is that when it was revealed the king zell said it's 2020 game but that could have been misinterpeted. I think that people just jumped on board that it will be quick sequel, even though no-one have a idea what "same" sequel means and we are not in Wii era with something like Galaxy>Galaxy 2. And as for Zelda games that's just how it goes, they will always announce a major Zelda game early. Last but not least I also don't support the idea that the scope of the game was changed during pandemic or after 2 years of development.

I'm an "announcement in 3.5h" believer
If anything that would one hour more and not 3.5. It's always 23:00 JST. Anyway, I am expecting it tomorrow but can't wait for later today when it will not happen and people will say we are doomed, as shown hours ago with "it's gonna be a Partner."

This does support what I'm saying though lol

Nate still confident in Drake releasing half 1 of 2023. You’ve just got to wonder what Nintendo is saving for its reveal early next year.
I honestly think Nintendo will not reveal anything releasing past March 2023. Then around February 2023, they will finally do a Drake presentation and announce most of the lineup for the year.

It was barely okay the first time, at least we got Skyward Sword out of the Wii prison. But this won't fly a second time especially when it's "just" about ports of the HD versions of TP and WW.

I just wish Nintendo would apply this short timeframe between announcement and release they now usually do to Zelda too. Even without the pandemic, this game should've never been announced in 2019.
That E³ Direct was great, they didn't even need that announcement ....
„We have a special announcement for The Legend of Zelda in 2023! Finally you can play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch, with updated Visuals never seen before on an actual popular console. In this game you can see how we already were experimenting with the artstyle that was later used in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. You know the game you really want a sequel of. Later in the year we will also release The Legend Zelda: The Twilight Princess. It influenced The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (the game you are desperately awaiting the sequel of) in having that one bridge. You are able to buy each game exclusively with a Nintendo Switch Online Membership. Why not use a Nintendo Switch Game Voucher? Then you really have the feeling of getting a The Legend of Zelda collection. Please understand that there aren‘t any further Zelda games planed for 2023. Thank you.“

Xenoblade 3 direct, Splatoon 3 direct and treehouse all announced 2 days in advance at 3 pm CEST

I'm still a believer

Not super useful to frame Nintendo Direct or other similar tweet announcements in JST. Yes, the company is based in Japan, but these announcements have pretty much always been at 6am PT (Time zone where NoA is based). If it was based on JST, the times would change in the US or any country that switches to & from daylight savings time (so glad the US is finally getting making it permanent starting Nov 2023)

I have to take the next escalation step, you made me do it:

This surpasses giant Super Soaker and the Tidal Wave, this needs giant NERF gun.

I am using JST as the example because it's the simpliest one. (+ no daylight saving in Japan). There is still daylight saving here in Europe and I never heard anything about changing that soon.

If we use logic a nintendo direct whatever could be,partner or general, can not be this week or next because splatoon 3 releases very soon,I think all the nintendo marketing should back up that release, after that release i could expect something,I am personally doubting about a general I think it will be a partner.

Japan doesn't use daylight savings time iirc. Anyway yeah unless I'm missing something, directs are announced at 23:00 JST from the Fall To the Spring, Then 22:00 JST in the Summer. Daylight savings is complicated - but for me it's always been 6:00am

Actually the 22:00 JST applies from Winter. All other time periods Spring to Summer it's 23:00 JST. But yeah daylight saving is complicated but that's for another topic.

I feel like next year could be a year of 2D platformers with new Mario, Donkey Kong and whatever game Good Feel is working on.

With Koei Tecmo and Gust saying they're announcing things soon, if there's a direct this week Fire Emblem is a hard lock right?

I don't understand why we think botw2 will be in the direct, it's not e3.
The only time they show botw games other than at e3 is to delay the game.
Botw2 spring 2024 here we go.

Probably not no for that reason. Gust is said to be assisting on the game not developing it. More likely it’s a new Atelier of some sort, they make a ton of those very quickly.

Fire Emblem is still super likely to be here based on the rumor it’s planned for this fiscal year.

I'm sure Nintendo Twitter fans will react calmly if Nintendo posts a Partner announcement
Last time we knew ahead of time it was going to be a Partner, if it is a Partner this time (it won't) I feel most will react in surprise rather than "anger"

If partners wanting to showcase their game at TGS is the main reason for a September Direct, they could do a Partner Direct :p . Do Metroid Prime Promo for when it releases, and save any first party stuff for next year - relaunching the Switch early in the year with Zelda and Drake.

say it ain't so
