you know what I could totally see happening in this thread?

After an uneventful first week, hype and hopium start inflating with the expectation of a hardware reveal mid-July.

Rumblings of something start to happen, and hype skyrockets far past unsafe levels. We catch wind of something being announced in a matter of days. Might even be next Monday the 11th!!

11th rolls around and they announce... a Direct. Shit goes pandemonium. Half the site is melting down over a hardware reveal, the other half is freaking out and trying to remind the melted half that hardware doesn't get revealed in Directs, but to no avail - patterns have been thrown out the window and hype has infected every single person in this thread.

Then the Direct rolls around and it's entirely software-based with not a crumb of hardware for the rest of the month.
this sounds realistic.

I don't think the next Switch SKU will launch with a new Mario Kart. It will launch with a new 3D Mario.
Normally I would agree but the Mario movie could be a bit of a curveball. If its not a new 3D Mario then probably a 2D game tho.

EDIT: misread it as Switch 2. my bad.

there's a reason I used the there will be blood copypasta

I feel like what the next Switch launches with is almost irrelevant because I expect the first-party content to be cross-generation. Nintendo know enthusiasts will pay money for the best possible experience, but they can still take money from the rest of the active Switch userbase. The transition on to new hardware is going to be gradual, anyway.

I suspect the exclusive content will initially come in the form of third-party games and some subscription services (GC emulation?) which aren't feasible on the existing hardware.

Had to vote no Nintendo event this month.

If Nintendo wanted to show software in July, why not throw it in the last Direct?

And unless more rumors start circulating in the next week, right now I think 2022 hardware launch is too soon. It's hard to imagine a holiday release with Zelda right around the corner. Plus why talk about M+R now if it's going to be a launch window game? They would wait until the reveal. I suppose it's possible they want to highlight third party games at launch, but they've never really done that before.

I mean, the majority of the people in the poll don't expect a hardware reveal this month. And Nintendo is very forthcoming in their marketing when they are going to reveal new hardware by clearly announcing the reveal before hand or just outright revealing it. They are never going to hide an important hardware announcement behind an otherwise traditional Direct or Direct mini announcement and people would be foolish to think they would.

I am pretty curious to see how Nintendo handles N64 NSO from here on out. We now have all of the games that were originally promised in last year's September Direct...all except for the Custom Robo duology.

I was really thinking we'd have some summer/E3 Direct that'd show off the next batch of games by now, but I guess not. Honestly, I'm kinda worried they're just gonna dump Custom Robo this month and Custom Robo V2 next month onto the Japanese NSO service and give literally nothing in return to the western userbase at all. I suppose if they really do that, then there may be a chance of seeing the next wave at the September Direct...if that happens.

Man you all really expecting Nintendo to reveal new hardware this year when reptuable gaming sites havent leaked anything about their new console lol.

I just have a feeling that Nintendo is going to skip a hardware revision and just go straight to the successor.

I can see the successor coming out in 2024.

I'm not basing this on anything but that's just how I feel.

Me too. Some of their twitter drops have been good but nothing beats the anticipation for a direct.
I love Directs, not only for the anticipation buts also, and I know some people are against this, but I'm a sucker for seeing people get excited for announcements in videos, which you simply don't get in Twitter drops.

Nothing you said conflicts with my comment

because they're waiting to show it alongside their new hardware

Yeah if there is a Direct, I would wager it's a hardware reveal because a no-hardware direct in July makes literally 0 sense to me.

But as I said, I think it's probably a little too soon for hardware announcement.

So there might actually be something happening in July? Hardware-related or not that would be great, I wasn't expecting any more major Nintendo news till September at the earliest.

Would be crazy if we get nothing till September honestly lol.

Imagine having a packed scheduled on February after the direct. The mini filling in more gaps. And no updates on any first party till September, I think the podcasts I listen too will break their switches. Especially the Zelda one lol

I wouldn't rule it out, but I also can't imagine they set up a Treehouse recording session for just one game only.

I'm firmly in the camp of there being nothing besides Twitter drops this month, but if there ends up being something, this is what my prediction would be. 2nd week of July.

  • Spotlight: Metroid Prime HD, releasing in November. We're also given the official confirmation that Metroid Prime 2 HD and Metroid Prime 3 HD are also in development, although no footage or date is given. We're also reassured that Metroid Prime 4 is "progressing smoothly".
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Booster Course Pass Wave 2. Releasing later in July.
  • Switch Sports update, releasing next week.
  • New Splatoon 3 trailer, focusing on the game as a whole, rather than a specific portion like the previous trailers. Direct announced for August.
  • Spotlight: Everybody's 1-2-Switch, releasing late August. It looks bad. Horseman becomes a meme on Twitter.
  • Mario Strikers first update, featuring Daisy. Shadowdrop.
  • Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. Nothing crazy, just more footage.
  • Sizzle reel. Mostly features games that have already released, but we get a new date for Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, releasing late September.
  • Spotlight: Bayonetta 3. Releasing in early December.
If there's no hardware, the direct is branded as a Mini. If there is, the direct is announced beforehand with a new branding, starts with the hardware reveal, and ends with a full unveiling of BotW2. Fire Emblem is saved for September regardless.

Contractual obligation is probably a possibility. But i immediately called there had to be more then just Live A live.

But it’s funny. That treehouse segment came and went. I feel they work better when you have a string of games showing every period of time. That what makes me stick around.

Man…they could literally just have a 1 hour treehouse segment of Botw 2 gameplay and that would be enough for me for the rest of the year.

Tbf the last time reputable gaming sites leaked info about a new console it didn't exactly pan out

On the flip side, that was a year ago and if the revision was never going to release that year, that’d be some very early reporting. They were been able to successfully report on the OLED screen production which did end up coming out.

You’d think if the new device was coming this year that we’d be hearing something major fairly soon from more than just the likes of Bloomberg.

I’m very hopeful that a July announcement is going to happen but I’m trying to keep my expectations in check. I don’t want to get too excited about being able to see my XC3 party clearly handheld mode.

yeah, to my mind it all breaks down like this:

most likely:
No event; Nintendo decided they didn't have enough to show this year. Maybe they thought that Prime would be a lower-key announcement better suited to Twitter.

next most likely:
Hardware. When E3 was cancelled they pulled their news for the big hardware announcement in their usual manufacturing-dictated timeframe, leaving behind a killer Partner Direct to fulfill obligations. Biggest flaw with this narrative is that one would assume the original third party announcements would have related to new hardware, but there are ways of rationalizing this.

unlikely:
First party Direct moved to July for fun. Why would they do this? Spacing? It makes no sense.

patently absurd:
Another Partner Direct. June's Partner Direct was way, way too big to be followed up so soon.

This is sorta where I'm at. I'd love to be wrong though! I just think it's too early for new hardware and I can't see a Direct Mini this soon after the last one. We'll get some Twitter announcements.

Nintendo dislikes Geoff theory is probably the correct answer base on nothing but humorous meme value.

Tho Is Summer Game Fest still going? Wonder how it did viewers wise

I don‘t know if I want to post in a thread which is haunted by a raccoon with a white hat but here I am…

Man, I don't even care if there isn't a new hardware reveal this month, I just want to see the new FE and I don't wanna wait until September for a reveal smh

If it gets revealed in some kind of event this month, maybe it'll be the December game and we won't have to wait until 2023 to play it 👀

I think that's rather unlikely, unfortunately much as I'd love it. But I'll hold out hope too!

I’m fine waiting on BotW2.

I’m fine waiting on a direct.

I just need Bayo 3 dated and MPHD confirmed, and recognize that we don’t need a direct for just those necessarily

I don't think that would be crazy. Summer is stacked, we just had a Direct, there is no need to shift attention away from those games to another showcase. They can do a Direct after the summer when most summer games have released.

  • June - Partner Direct, Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak, Mario Strikers, Fire Emblem Warriors
  • July - Live A Live, Xenoblade 3, Klonoa, Digimon Survive
  • August - Pacman World, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
  • September - Splatoon 3, Taiko no Tatsujin, the Legend of Heroes, General Direct
I obviously skipped a few smaller releases, but these are some personal highlights. There are 2-3 games releasing a month.
Heck, even October is pretty busy now. But with a September showcase, they can perhaps add another November game, a December game and show what's coming early next year.

Wait wtf SHE is in FamiBoards?
No, but I want to block it from my eyes when I am here. If I want third hand headcanon I'll go to Twitter but here it should be banned imo. People talk about this abomination way too much, only helps their popularity

holy shit I love be the cowboy @Raccoon

so much chaos and excitement! I will be participating by pretending nothing is happening at all and then being stoked when something happens. also shitposting.

with that said:
  • no event this month
  • new hardware announced in October
  • the new hardware is a super mario brothers™ tie clip
  • spiders on the moon
  • no new video games exist
  • Nintendo will not announce any unannounced games until Grögol Bonanza is finished (so much pressure!!)
these are my very real predictions, thanks I could help bud
