areas of focus do not define a lack of ambition

I'm pretty split on this. If it's too much like Legends, I feel like it's too much too soon. But if it's NOT enough like Legends and is instead Sword/Shield without such narrow paths through the world, I may not be interested in yet another Switch Pokémon.

Also, with this so soon I guess there won't be some significant Arceus DLC later this year.
Yup, people (including myself) shat on arceus before launch and it ended up being possibly the best looking game on the system.
Switch does have more games than "Pokémon Legends Arceus" and "Vroom in the night sky".
And as always, call me when BOTW has remotely the number of unique enemy designs and animations and such designs that everyone expects a Pokémon game to have.

You can have detailed designs or hundreds of them, pick one.
That's a matter of design priority, but neither choice should make a big difference when it comes to things like like pop-in, aliasing, texture resolution. That's a whole other department's job.

I'm shocked. I mean, I wasn't expecting a new gen the same year as Legends Arceus, let alone A FULL OPEN WORLD GAME the same year as Arceus lol. 2022 is crazy.

I hope Game Freak doesnt use the battle mechanics of PLA in this game because they frankly were horrible (especially the damage formula) it worked for PLA but in a more classic Pokemon game it would make the battle system and PvP broken
Yeah if they want to go into this direction I think they'll have to rework it.
It wasn't as big of a problem in Arceus cause it was less focussed on battles and more on the collection aspect of the games.

like what is it people want?? I don’t understand?? I don’t understand!!
can’t speak to others but personally I’ve just wanted games with big, meaty campaigns/regions like Platinum and BW2 but in 3D. I would gladly take a limited Pokédex if it meant getting a 30 hour campaign with a lot of postgame areas to traverse and cool areas and dungeons to explore. That’s what I mostly play Pokémon for and SWSH is my least favorite because it was very much lacking in that.

I haven’t played Arceus so maybe this new open approach will be good, but in a vacuum, that’s all I would want.

is more time really going to make enough of a difference for it to be worth it to you?
There is something like too much of a good thing. Fatigue is no abstract concept. Beside that, these games clearly need more time in the oven.
so none of this is ambition to you?
I never said that. I was just talking about, how this and Arceus are the games with the most advancements in quite some time.

I can't believe I'm on the other side of the debate for once. I love the look of this! Once the framerate is fixed and the sharpness is adjusted, this will be the best looking mainline Pokemon game on Switch.

For me it’s less about the quality but more like… I wish they just let the games stand out on their own for a little bit. Potentially 3 Pokemon games in a year is a lot! It would be nice to be able to savor them a bit more.
That I can understand. Some of my friends that like Pokemon even more than I do are complaining about fatigue.

I'm specifically referring to the sentiment that the game has to be rushed and mediocre just because of the release window.

They won't, there is a reason why it's offline game and no online battle. Turn order like that is a pain in the ass for online play.
And this is main game Gen 9 so online battle is a must.

Looks like the first generation in a long, long, long time that might be interesting going by the information. Might just finally jump back in again.

Seeing them side by side like that, there is a clear difference between the three games. PLA is a massive step up from SwSh (which looks like pure garbage), and SV is a step up from PLA.

My initial thoughts:

  • Wow. Can't believe this is coming out this year. Legends Arceus and Gen 9 in the same year seems insane.
  • Love all the starters. In previous gens there was usually one or two I wasn't a fan of - but I love all 3 of these.
  • The lack of aliasing is just bad. Like holy hell.
  • Love the vibrant colors and design of the world.
  • This has me excited in a way that Sword/Shield never did.

yeah, there were several areas that were less interesting and exciting in terms of post-game stuff, but I think that was to drive the Wild Area as the post-game hub. and then the expansions fucking ruled.

I had about 80 hours in before the expansions but I can also appreciate that I am an outlier and some sort of… game freak

I feel like the more hardcore Pokemon fans are the ones that burn out first. I personally can't imagine playing SwSh then BDSP then PLA then SV. I'd crave different experiences.
The names of the starters are great too! Sprigatito? Fuecoco? Those are boppable names.

I know I should avoid Pokémon discourse on the internet because every time I feel fucking insane

this is a “holy shit looks good I’m so stoked that it’s coming this year” for me

so many assumptions about team makeup and dev schedules and shit like what counts as “unfinished” and “bad” in previous games like ??? I don’t even understand

like… you wanting something different doesn’t make Sword & Shield bad at what it was doing. I fucking loved it tbh, I can understand why people didn’t like some of the choices but they were choices

there are always gonna be choices when they develop these games

like what is it people want?? I don’t understand?? I don’t understand!! like what do you need to mod Elden Ring to catch shit in??? why do I feel so much more fucking insane reading about Pokémon than I even feel railing against and screaming about the state of the fucking world???? what is happening and why is this bothering me so much????????

so yeah uh please disregard, I’m just gonna tap out and y’all enjoy the discourse

it’s totally spain

wtf was happening in that live action intro though I’m v confused about escalator cop

oh god oh no I like discussing it

I’m gonna be subject to these takes forever

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!
You're not alone in your confusion. Even my Pokemon-crazy friends that loved Arceus were initially underwhelmed and kinda annoyed, which left my flabbergasted as this looks like it's building on Legends Arceus in every way I wanted it to. But I think they're just more fatigued than anything else (although I think one of them is still untrusting of GameFreak).

But unfortunately I'm not that free today to gush about the game

LOD management and world design look like a step up from Arceus. It's still not on par with the likes of BotW (not a fair comparison maybe), but it's a lot more visually coherent than Arceus.

P.S.: also wondering what it feels like being a Pokémon fan and getting so many games :O .

to me it feels great! but uh that seems to not be the consensus

do you mean lack of anti-aliasing?

The wild area was a cool experiment that seems to have laid the groundwork for a more open Pokemon experience but it didn’t do much for me, after the novelty wore off for a couple of hours I was pretty bored by it. That’s not getting into all the routes and caves being very boring and lacking in design and personality, and the final sequence of story battles being a pale imitation of the elite four.

Maybe Gen 9 breaking away and doing something new will be good in the long run because if the template for Pokémon going forward was SWSH then I can’t say I would have much of a future with the franchise.

Considering abillities are back and online, I don't think strong/agile or the turn order will be back.

cries in Zelda
oh don’t worry I’m there too

though I’ve really enjoyed the annual releases except Age of Calamity / Hyrule Warriors (because I haven’t played much of it and Warriors games are weird to me)

I was expecting a Legends Arceus expansion ala Isle of Armor/Crown Tundra, not a new gen. I mean it is cool that it will finally be a true open world game and the environments looks better but I'm worried that it won't have the feedback from the things that people liked from PLA, at least for now until it is confirmed or not (like capturing free roaming pokemon without battle or boss fights), as both games where developed at the same time.

Also the human characters are a downgrade with the lack of cel shading and the style looking more like Let's Go than SwSh and PLA, the player trainer looks like they are a elementary schooler...

Now that I'm thinking about it, I think it's makes sense to announce this right after Arceus. It will make a lot of traditional fans that were unsure on the new direction to buy the game to check out where the inspiration for gen 9 came from.

Of course its legs will still be abruptly cut when the new game releases.

I am very, very interested to see how a GF open world game stacks up against other titles on the market. they need to make sure to...actually put interesting things in their wide open spaces, which takes a lot of time and resources

the jumps in improvement from SS to IoA/CT to LA makes me optimistic that this will be good

Oh for sure. I've enjoyed 2017 (BotW), 2019 (LA) and 2021 (SS). AoC had some great music and good intentions but was intensely repetitive and a chugfest :p .

Anyways, I was close to trying my first Pokémon game with Arceus but the LOD and level design put me off in the end. This looks much better so I'm cautiously optimistic :) .
