Instead of a sequel to 1-2 Switch, why doesn’t Nintendo give us a spiritual successor to Wii Sports. Give us the Ring Fit Adventure for Wii Sports. I’d be ecstatic.

What caused this renewed confidence in xenoblade? The website update?

I feel like I'm trapped in a time loop, lol.

This isn't the first time the monolith website has been updated and people sword blind it meant something was about to be announced. It was only what, September last year where we did this exact same thing with people reacting exactly the same way to them updating their website saying a direct must be happening within days (it wasn't for a few weeks) and that a new monolith game would be there (there wasn't one at the direct)

I think I’m getting to a point where I’m expecting too many Nintendo announcements in the direct haha. I gotta dwindle it down…….

It’s easy to feel that way, but I think this Direct in particular has no choice but to go heavy with reveals. Basically all games releasing prior to September need to be revealed and there are probably at least three titles that still need to be announced for May to August. And then you have another predicament with a ton of games needed to be showcased / revealed at E3 as well. For hypothetical purposes, we could have an epic E3 this year that has a full blowout on BOTW2, officially reveal Prime Remastered for fall, shows off the first trailer for Prime 4, and finally reveals the next big 3D Mario game. How can you introduce something like a 2D Donkey Kong for the fall with that much heat? I think we’re going to see a ton of announcements this month, even if it goes against recent trends.

The website update is different this time around though. It’s been completely revamped. The last site redesign was in 2017 before Xenoblade 2 came out.

So, who first started the Donkey Kong rumours and who said what since then? I only remember the DK fansite but I don't count that as a credible source.

I still have trouble tracking the credibility of that one anyway. To me it always came off as speculation that morphed over time into a rumour.

There wasn't a previous update to Monolith Soft's site. What you're referring to was simply site maintenance which lead to speculation of an announcement. This time it's a complete website revamp.

People really need to start educating themselves more when it comes to Monolith Soft.

I mean even disregarding all of the rumors and updates, Xenoblade 3 releasing this year just makes a lot of sense to me. In terms of lead development projects, we've only had the Xenoblade 1 remaster since Xenoblade 2 back in 2017. That was nearly five years ago.

We know they probably have several projects hidden on the back end, as well as serving as support to other studios. But I still feel that enough time has elapsed on top of all the potential hints that would indicate this year isn't out of question.

Next week is the week, y'all !!

I hope.

And here's my take:

Opener: Fire Emblem remakes
Advance Wars release date trailer
Extended look at Triangle Strategy
New Kirby trailer
Everybody Switch first look
Deep dive: Splatoon 3
Bayonetta 3 new trailer
Batman games confirmed
Closer: Xenoblade Chronicles 3

I've decided to go in and not expect BotW2. I just think it's saved for the "E3 blowout" many speculate, and I also don't think we'll see Prime, I don't think they're gonna go all out and reveal everything ever. Some things are gonna be held back for later.

Would love nothing more than to be wrong though.

Funnily enough, the first time it was mentioned was by Markomaro on Twitter, whose track record is…disputed I will say. In 2020, he claimed that “one of the bigger games of 2021 is Donkey Kong. This time, Retro Studios in not behind”. He later added that it’s gonna be a NSMB-style revival and that the team was hit very hard by COVID, delaying the title from summer 2021 for about 9 months. He said some weeks ago that we’re going to see it “in a few months”.

In early summer of 2021, a ton of rumors came up from different sides. Nintendo Life, Gamexplain and others corroborated them, and DK Vine even did a long podcast episode on the whole topic. People are not sure whether it’s 2D or 3D, but many signs are pointing to 2D (hires from Nintendo, general difference in scope/budget). DK Vine stated that Nintendo indeed plans to bring DK back in-house since early 2018 with many other projects (theme park, and now we know about the movie that is planned). The big question is how these events are placed, since the game should be near completion, the movie is slated for 2023, the theme park for 2024+.

The Donkey Kong rumors aren't credible. If I had to guess everyone reporting on the rumor probably heard it from the same place.

I think it gained traction in part due to the theme park, that people hope it's a sign Nintendo is making another game sooner than later.

Yo, the excitement of this thread got me nostalgic lol. It's really that time of year. Only few days to go or we reset the clock.

Nintendo going to bring in the goods.
I'm not expecting this Direct to be quite top shelf for me personally, but I'm so excited for the return of Directs and I don't even think we'll have to reset the clock tbh. Some signs pointing to this week, and if it does happen this week, it's definitely Wednesday. Getting our announcement on the first day of the week that a Direct could be announced would be awesome.

I agree. I feel like we have this log jam of game announcements and Nintendo only does 3 General Directs a year. Only the first 2 matter for games coming this year (yeah could get maybe a port of a third party in the September Direct coming this year).

Nintendo doesn’t like to load up on a lot of big games announcements at E3. That’s why I feel like this direct might be like a game or two heavier on announcements from Nintendo. Now, I understand we also know more games coming this year compared to going into past years. It’s leaves a conflicted situation for some.

Sure. We can get Batman collection with some titles being native on switch.

But all of Kingdom Hearts is Cloud.

I ain’t mad.

😭

Is Nate actually credible? He said Monolith Soft worked on PLA which was debunked (now this false claim annoyingly has spread like wildfire across the gaming community). He quote retweets info from other gaming sites on his Twitter and says "This is correct" to give the impression he already knew about the info (if he did, why isn't he the first break it?). He got Switch Pro wrong.

Is there a reason why people hold him in high regard?
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I can tell you what it is for me: “Super Mario 3D All-Stars in September.”

(Hopefully I get the details right, it’s been a minute.) Nate had been mentioning/hinting for a while that SM3DA would be hitting in September. The weeks rolled on, and by the end of August, Nate was taking a lot of heat over his statements about the still-rumored game. SM3DA couldn’t be coming in September anymore as it hadn’t even been announced yet! Nate didn’t fully back down necessarily, but did acknowledge that plans could have changed. Not long later, on September 3rd, SM3DA was announced for a release on September 18th (a crazy and unpredictable announcement-to-release-date turnaround, the likes of which are nearly unheard of for a major Nintendo product.)

I should say, I had full confidence in his September prediction, even replying on ERA (while he was taking heat) something along the lines of “Nate has earned the benefit of the doubt from me, if he says September, then I think it’ll probably be September.” Prior to that, Nate had already developed a level of trust with me through his posts and podcasts, and his insightful and even-keeled demeanor, but the 3D All-Stars saga is what really cemented him as the “real deal,” because I saw first hand my trust wasn’t misplaced.

His second-hand information won’t always be perfect or accurate, and plans/timing can change, so no reason to take everything he says as gospel, but it’s clear (to me at least) that he definitely has an inside track. (Also, be wary of all the “news” sites and message boards that attribute leaks to him. They’ll literally take parts from his podcast that are clearly stated to be speculation-related discussions and blast them out as a leak. Always go to the source and hear what him and/or MVG actually said.)

Batman coming to switch would make it pretty good on top of things like fire emblem

Hopefully we will get kotor 2 on this one since the first one was announced in the September direct

I guess I will add my order:

Galaxy 2>odyssey>64>galaxy>3D world>Bowser’s Fury>3D Land>Sunshine
wow I’m late to this party

Odyssey > 3D World > Sunshine > Galaxy 2 > Bowser’s Fury > Galaxy > 64 > 3D Land

fight me

The DK rumor doesn't sound so substantial imo. It could happen, if it isn't Retro then it makes sense that EPD Tokyo would be the studio working on it, but i'll believe it when i see it.

Announcement would likely be Tuesday. They’ve done early morning direct announcement for next day afternoon direct a few times already. I can’t recall a single time they’ve announced a Direct on Monday. Maybe someone else remembers better than I do.

The DK Vine folks definitely knew about it before Markomaro. I'm at least 80% sure about that.

We should be getting news about DK at Universal this year which, honestly, would be a great time to announce a new game that hasn't had a new installment in 8 flippin years.

I also scarily convinced my Super Mario Odyssey 2 is indeed in fact Donkey Kong Odyssey with the gimmick this time being DK's tie.

I can’t recall the last time Nintendo has announced a general direct on Monday. Probably when they first began directs 7-8 years ago.

I have to ask Nate if he heard the DK rumor separately on his own or he’s just speculating off of others.

Nate was hyping up the DK rumor as part of his 2020 predictions and dialed it back a back a bit in his outlook for 2021. That being said, I think the reality is DK too important of an IP to let it go this long without a new game and Nintendo will want a new title before the theme park attractions and rumored movie launch. If DK doesn’t come this year, I feel like it’s all but too much of a guarantee it comes out next year. Too many different people have heard about this game in some form for it to be Star Fox Racing.

If it doesn’t come this year then next year for sure. Like you said the movie and the theme park. It’s a very important IP to Nintendo (and me).

So the Batman Arkham collection is basiclly confirming a Direct?
Not necessarily, or at least not necessarily soon. These listings can go up pretty far in advance

Now, I do think there'll probably be a Direct this week or next but this listing doesn't really play into that

I think we are all starting to feel the hype.

Hope we see some Atlus stuff, Persona related like 4 Golden which has been rumoured or 5 that seems less plausible by the way.

This is what I want, so so much. Direct sequel, spiritual successor, whatever. Just give me a sports game to play with my family like Wii Sports.

I mean Nate explicitly said they had a very minor involvement.

Just for the clarification, Monolith had absolutely zero involvement in either Pokémon games. Strictly none. So any insider that pretended they worked on either games was just flat out wrong, regardless of the intent.

The 3D Marios have introduced races that are prime spin-off material for ages. No reason why TOK couldn't use the races Galaxy 1 and 2 introduced. Or off-beat enemies from Sunshine and 64.
