I know Nintendo is set for a banger year, but does Pokemon, Kirby, Bayo, FE, XC3 (if that's what's being hinted at), AW, Metroid Prime, Splatoon, Mario and BotW2 (and more unrevealed stuff) almost seem too good to people? Like, something's getting pushed to 2023 just for the sake of making sure there's also stuff next year good?
I think 2022 does look unusual in the sense that, it is potentially going to be packed with things that the online facing fan base and games media get very excited about. So far, almost every announcement and rumour - bar Stinky Horse Game - are in that kind of territory. That being said, I also think there's valuable context here which helps us understand why this is happening.

1) Pandemic Disruption Causes a Pile-Up

At least one title for 2022 was delayed from 2021 - Advance Wars. If rumours and leaks are accurate, both Splatoon 3 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 were targeting a 2021 release date which they didn't meet. Now we see how a chunk of that exciting potential Mega year was never actually meant to land in this particular year. The second point is that we shouldn't be surprised that games which are larger in scope than much of Nintendo's 2020 and 2021 output have taken longer to arrive - that is simple logistics, but it is also another factor that would be compounded by pandemic delays. That brings me to the next bit of context.

2) Bigger Things Take More Time

It was striking to me that, in an early 2021 financial briefing (and I think again later in the year), Furukawa touched on rising research and development budgets. He stated something along the lines that the current and upcoming slate of Switch titles had bigger budgets and more resources thrown at them than past titles. It was a slightly confusing statement in the context of 2021's games, because few games really bore out that statement.

Looking at the first couple of Nintendo titles this year, as well as later and rumoured titles, and rising R&D budgets make sense. Game Freak have a major reimagination of Pokemon launching; HAL are doing the first 3D Kirby; the sequel to Breath of the Wild is due. As another example of this, if Nate is correct (and he often is), there are currently two Fire Emblem titles in works for this year and next. This greater investment was always going to take time to bear fruit, even more so because of the pandemic, and it was also only going to be undertaken once Nintendo knew Switch was a surefire hit and something they could invest in for the long term. This year is the year we finally see a large amount of that investment.

3) A Mix of Genres and Franchises Is Par For the Course

This shouldn't need stating, really, but there's absolutely nothing unusual about Nintendo launching a variety of franchises and genres in a single year. I'd argue whatever the faults of individual years on Switch (Too Much Old Stuff being the main culprit in 2018, 2020, 2021), Nintendo have at least always ensured a wide variety of genres and franchises gets published. They have, after 2017, published 20 or more titles a year, inclusive of eShop titles and 3rd party titles that have Nintendo as their regional publisher. By now, even if the line up is fleshed out by ports, spin-offs or remasters, we should expect around that level of output from Nintendo.

Finally, we need to circle back to that initial point: it is unusual for Nintendo to potentially launch so many enthusiast facing franchises in one year (Zelda, Bayonetta, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, Metroid, and so on). What's not unusual is for Nintendo to launch 3 or 4 commercially big titles - games which clear 5 million without trouble, and which have a substantial shot at going on to 10 million and even more.

Look at this year's line up again. As "big" as the different franchises online are, only 3 of them are going to land in that 10 million or more range: Pokemon Legends, Zelda, Splatoon 3. I would be surprised if there's more than one unknown game with that kind of commercial strength in the rest of Nintendo's 2022 slate. Everything else confirmed and rumoured is likely coming in somewhere between 1 and 5 million in sales (Kirby has a real shot at 5 million, I think). That's absolutely par for the course for Nintendo on Switch.

It's not that it's infeasible all these games are ready to launch in 2022 so much as it's whether we'd actually get them all in 2022, given Nintendo does hold back titles to fit into otherwise drier chunks of the schedule and that having a glut of games ready now may result in more gaps in the following year, which would be alleviated by pushing some into that year.

In which case we've already seen Nintendo happy to lean on remasters, ports and spin offs to fill out schedules. They haven't exactly paced their releases on Switch so that exciting new titles always come at an even or regular pace, so I'm not sure if we should expect them to adjust 2023 based on the fear that 2022 is too 'full' and that delays would strengthen a potentially weak 2023. I wouldn't be surprised if rumoured titles slip out of 2022, but I'd expect that to be on the basis of them not being quite done (like Xenoblade and Mario + Rabbids, as Nate is suggesting) than Nintendo having too many eggs in the 2022 basket. Perhaps, if a major 2023 title isn't going according to plan, then yeah, something from 2022 slips into the following year to make up for that.

Even if we as fans think 2023 is weak because the big summer title is a port of a Zelda remaster (hi, Wind Waker HD), Nintendo won't care because that game will still do 5 million plus, in all probability. Our perception of a 'weak' 2023 would be a year which lacks lots of new games; Nintendo's 'weak' 2023 would be a software slate which doesn't make them enough money or meet sales targets, and they can and will lean on easier projects like ports and remasters to achieve that.

fire emblem game looks nice there's a pretty girl with a sword and a bunch of dragons
shaq-fu remake coming april 2022

that's all

UMMMMMMMM

I mean the next issue is getting published after the likely time frame for a Direct, so they may have details on a title that will be announced in the Direct. Not too surprising.

Unless you're one of those sadists on Team March, of course.

Sony may have grabbed the Chrono Cross Remaster temporarily exclusive, but Nintendo grabbed the Chrono Trigger remake using the DQIX engine.
Half-Yeah

Oh wait, you said "temporary" exclusive.

...Okay, full-Yeah

The role of Patroclus shall be played by Geno, who finally makes it back into the Mario series only to tragically perish.

Edit: Wait, no, the Trojan Horse is just a giant Geno.
but Bowser is quantum entangled with Achilles, and Mario Hector

who could Bowser have possibly lost refusing to go into battle that now has him cast as the bloodthirsty villain, always on the offensive, defiling the dead? Who could Bowser have loved more than anything?

I stand by that Silksong will be a shadow drop. With how they operate, I just can’t see them putting out a trailer for a release in 6 months.

isn't this year the time for the next NLG game? other than Luigi Mansion their other two franchises they could possibly making( Punch Out, Mario striker) doesn't require a lot of time, certainly not more than three years
They could be making much more than just those franchises.

Outside of COVID, we are overdue for a NLG announcement. Their next game will definitely be announced this year or next year.

I feel like we won't get any new Nintendo game from Good-Feel or Next Level until next year. Good-Feel's self published game should come this year - it was supposed to be revealed and launch in 2021 but that obviously hasn't happened.

Maybe we see what those two studios are up to, but I wouldn't expect them to launch their next games just yet.

No Zelda 0/10 Direct...

@Raccoon

Alright! I've been waiting for this, so here it goes:

Nintendo Direct 2.16.22.

Major announcements include:
  • New Fire Emblem (August 19th 2022)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Holiday 2022, but could get pushed at E3 with an exact date in 2023)
  • Mario Movie Trailer (December 2022)

I'm unsure where exactly to slot these as while Nintendo opening and closing with first party announcements makes sense, they've become far more loose with that sort of timing as of late, the last Direct opened and ended on third party trailers, while Kirby was revealed about 7 minutes in... HOWEVER, I do believe the Mario movie trailer will be near the end of the Direct, as either the second to last or last trailer.

Now for everything else (I can reasonably predict, there'd be more small stuff in the actual thing):
  • Ace Attorney trilogy 2 (AJ, DD, & SoJ) is announced and shadowdropped, while Ace Attorney 7 is announced for later in the year
  • Warioware gets an online update out of nowhere, adding online for all modes, update available today
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land gets a new trailer, maybe showing some new feature, not a major trailer though
  • Advance Wars gets the leaked April 8th date officially confirmed
  • Splatoon 3 gets a segment announcing some new mode and a June 30th release date
  • Mario Party Superstars gets some paid DLC packs announced, with the first releasing February 22nd. The first pack will be $14.99 USD and will contain two boards, two characters, and 20 minigames... BUUUUUT if you are an owner of the NSO expansion pass you will get this pack, and all future packs for zero additional cost
  • New Mario spinoff, sure, there's always at least two Marios per year so one of them will get announced here, but for the sake of argument, let's say it launches July 22nd, and it is... baseball, yeah let's go with that. Bamco's making it, many of the characters have baseball attire, but their normal outfits will be in the game similar to the skins in Sluggers.
  • Ya'll forgot about Pac-Man Museum+? Well here it is in a sizzle reel with a shadowdrop
  • Bayonetta 3 is out May 20th, yep

Notable Absences:
  • "But Gianluca what about Stinky Horse Game?" That's casual fodder, it gets announced the day before the investor meeting next week
  • Mario Rabbids? Nate's probably right, late this year or next year if anything
  • Botw2? Nah get lol'd
  • "Why isn't this the Kirby Direct?" Oh you fool, that's still happening, it's just on April 27th, they'll reveal DLC for Forgotten Land and Air Ride 2 for the holidays

I'd bet some serious money that a Mario Movie trailer will not be featured in a Nintendo direct.

Before September '21 I would've bet some serious money that the cast reveal for a Mario movie would not have been featured in a Nintendo Direct.

Weak rumor imo, but there's a pretty strong chance we see more Kirby in the Feb direct given the anniversary...

Nintendo saw how much people LOVED the cast announcements for the Mario movie. They’ve decided to end the Direct with more character reveals including the Rock as Thwomp, Jennifer Aniston as Toadette, Billy Crystal as Goomba and more

Why do I actually like the sound of these..?

Miyamoto popping up at 11:30pm British time to tell me that collection of people comprises the Super Mario cast made me think I'd strayed into a fever dream, to be honest.

On a more serious note, Iove that we already have 2k plus posts in a Direct speculation thread
I... honestly didn't expect Famiboards to have this much activity.

On another note, may I start a Team April faction?

Thanks in advance.

They do give off extremely cousin-ly vibes

Yeesh... Dangerous Cousin vibes

feel free to, but the thread ends march 31st

if a direct comes after that it'll just be the wild west
