Between the weird reveal video of RFA and the explainer video:

What I expected: a trailer for a weird new WarioWare that used a weird ring controller

What I got: a look at the people who will someday eat me alive

Oh yeah? Explain this!

I still regret not buying the extra kits after loving the blaster. I hear the wind pedal of all things was particularly great.
My irrational fear about VR is that I'll have no idea an intruder has entered my house and is preparing to kill me and my family while I flail around like an idiot in a game.

My less irrational fear about VR is that one of my kids will walk up to me while I'm playing it and I'll accidentally punch or kick or trip over them.

My most rational fear about VR is that I'll absolutely painfully hit my body into walls and furniture.
Regarding the first one, most VR setups have pretty normal headphones or just let you use your own. You can still, like, hear the outside world lol. You're barely any less aware of your surroundings than you are sitting at a desk in front of a monitor with headphones on (which is why @Raccoon's posts are admittedly rather lost on me, as they describe something that doesn't match my actual experience). And if you do decide you need to see, turning on the camera feed or just lifting the headset takes half a second.

The other ones are entirely rational tho. While SteamVR (and I assume most/all modern systems) have a neat wireframe overlay that comes up to show you the edge of your defined play space, it doesn't help much when you're reaching somewhere you're not looking. I've 100% slammed my friend's bedroom ceiling with a Vive wand. It didn't hurt me, but we were concerned about the controller for a minute.

People say that Team January is too self-absorbed and unable to look critically at ourselves. I'm here to prove that stereotype wrong. I will spend the rest of this post listing off EVERY single flaw of Team January.

Thank you for reading.

I think my other problem(?) is that this world view is something I'm incapable of resonating with, but that's a discussion I probably shouldn't be getting into when I'm trying to turn my phone off for the night lol.

It's almost 3:00 AM.

Why am I thinking about Nintendo at this time in the middle of the night?

Ugh...

What if we get 2 n64 games on nso in feb? Goldeneye gets announced and released on nso and eshop shadowdropped after the direct.

Tonight after work, I watched Batman Returns for the first time and achieved 100% completion in Mumbo Mountain, Treasure Trove Cove, and Bubblegloop Swamp in Banjo-Kazooie. Batman Returns was awesome imo, and it feels so good to be playing Banjo with an N64 controller for the first time in 17 years, thanks to NSO.

Now to beat Halo Infinite, alternate between Pikmin 3 and Banjo, and watch Batman Forever over the weekend.

We now know what February's N64 game is. What Genesis/Megadrive games are you all hoping we get in February?

19 games are currently available on Genesis NSO:
  • Altered Beast
  • Castlevania: Bloodlines
  • Contra Hard Corps
  • Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
  • Dynamite Headdy
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Golden Axe
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • MUSHA
  • Phantasy Star IV
  • Ristar
  • Shining Force
  • Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Streets of Rage 2
  • Strider
  • Thunder Force II
  • Toe Jam & Earl

Sega games that have a good chance of an NSO release:
  • Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
  • Alisia Dragoon
  • Alien Soldier
  • Alien Storm
  • Beyond Oasis
  • Columns
  • Comix Zone
  • Eternal Champions
  • Golden Axe II
  • Golden Axe III
  • Kid Chameleon
  • Landstalker
  • Light Crusader
  • Phantasy Star II
  • Phantasy Star III
  • The Revenge of Shinobi
  • Shining Force II
  • Shining in the Darkness
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 1
  • Sonic Spinball
  • Sonic 3D Blast
  • Streets of Rage 3
  • Super Fantasy Zone
  • Thunder Force 3
  • Toe Jam & Earl in Panic on Funktron
  • Vectorman
  • Virtua Fighter 2
  • Wonder Boy In Monster World

Third Party Wild Cards: Games that have previously appeared elsewhere.
Out of the wild cards above, I think Mega Man Wily Wars has the strongest odds at an NSO release.
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, Spider-Man and Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist. This is my childhood games but i know it has zero chances to be released lol

Lots of misinformation spread around VR I see.

Sometimes it is best to take a step back and to learn about things you are not familiar with.

I have a lot of reservations about its current implementation but :

1. The Oculus Quest 2 has been one of the hottest item this Holiday season.
2. Nintendo entered the VR market with the Virtual Boy 30 years ago and released a VR device with Labo. They even patched their biggest games to support it.
3. Play Beat Saber, and tell me it is not the kind of experience you would hope to see the industry never stop making.

I am so hyped for Arceus ya'll don't understand!!!

Seems like Nintendo has been marketing it a lot more recently (which makes 100% sense), like I even got an email saying the game is gonna release on midnight 28th jan so order it! (jokes on them I already did πŸ‘πŸ‘„πŸ‘)
But I don't recall getting those type of emails for other games unless I've subconsciously been ignoring them so far. XD

A friend of mine said that there won't be any PokΓ©mon Legends review available before release because they didn't send out review copies, is that true?

re: VR

Half-Life Alyx was the kind of transformative experience that I always imagined VR to be but the feeling of being tethered to a computer with some kind of mental umbilical cord was alienating as hell. And since Facezuck seems to be the only one interested in providing a good standalone device, I'll just have to sit this one out for the time being.

I love Breath of the Wild, but playing past Zelda titles has made me miss two small conventions which should never have been dropped:

1) an interesting title screen. The two N64 games, and Twilight Princess, are probably Peak Title Intros for me. Wind Waker is pretty nifty, too. For Breath of the Wild, the title screen could have been something like the initial title reveal at E3 2016; the logo appears with a different section of the overworld in view each time.

2) Chest fanfare. Obviously, the sheer number of chests in BotW means the chest fanfare being present isn't feasible. But surely for more significant chests, this can be a thing.

Batman Forever, the movie that made Kiss from a Rose by Seal a hit. I was only a kid when it came out but for some reason I still remember that scene vividly.

There is though, if one wanders long enough in Hyrule Castle. Another level under that is when you acquire gears.

I'm the only one, but I miss the overdramatic game over/deaths from the older games. You could really feel the gravity of your mistakes. Ragdolls are funny though.

Where the news about Sonic Origins, SEGA?! It's the only saving grace for this year from them (can't find myself to invest confidence in Frontiers); Hoping they won't screw up a very simple concept such as a compilation...

I wish they did a more a complete package tho.. with Game Gear/Master System games, and other stuff that never got re-released like Knuckles' Chaotix, but I'm taking an official way to play Sonic 3 in widescreen, I suppose...

Phew. Grinding for Lv50 Skells ain't no easy feat.

Xenoblade question: How does 2 compare against the first game and X respectively? Which one does it lean heavier towards? Is it a good game for someone who didn't like the first game but adoooooores X?

just curious.

2 is more akin to the original

2 is definitely closer to the original, in that it has large environments but is much more linear and narrative driven rather than being more open ended and systems driven like X.

Hopefully X gets a Definitive Edition down the line.

Wasn't expecting this Christian Donlan piece about Animal Crossing to resonate with me so much. I acutely know what he's talking about because I know roughly at what point the New Horizons went from "oh gee this is neat" to "I may have a problem" for me.

This was a pretty good read. Some of the feelings he expresses here and this dichotomy between "being and earning" is what ultimately made me appreciate BotW more than Odyssey due to the former's freedom expression and the latter's breadcrumb approach to handing out rewards and stringing the player along. Not to say that that either game is better than the other but it made me understand some of the issues players had with New Horizons.

thanks for sharing. this is a wonderful illustration of the fundamental "problem" (and I do use the word loosely) with modern Animal Crossing

maybe I’m misunderstanding this post but like… how?

I really thought by now the deep concernβ„’ about the dark futureβ„’ was kind of global knowledge and zeitgeist, and after two years of COVID everyone was at least a little painfully aware

like we’re faced with increasing and not especially precedented crises, wealth disparity blasting past the Jupiter’s rings, and the people who have an unconscionable amount of social and fiscal capital want to send their cars to Mars, start luxury space hotels, or make more fake layers of world to sell you fake shit in, all to steal your face and know your secrets so it can more effectively sell you more fake shit. None of it faces inwards when the inner crises are boiling over.

We’ve watched Facebook’s approach kill credibility and fuel misinformation. This has directly fueled actual genocides.

We’ve watched Musk throw shit into space for fun while employees literally die on his floors, overworked and underpaid, literally discouraged from going to hospitals because it’s a bad look!! let alone all the crypto chaos and how many of his β€œsolutions” to global warming create different mining crises or don’t consider the public β€œreal” or plan for actual urban planning that considers the needs of actual people (see The Boring Company)

We’ve watched Bezos make multiple additional fortunes off of heinous labor abuses day by day by day while ignoring the safety of workers enough to tell them to keep fucking working during tornadoes and die for his billions, all so he can put on his little cowboy hat and ride in a rocket

And then we watched all of that happen in a global pandemic where we got to see exactly how much the profits of wealthy people are worth β€” our lives. all of them. millions of lives. supported at all levels of government, us dying for their stupid money hoarding and labor abuse

Reagan’s chickens have come home to roost baybee

and these are the people who have built or bolstered what will become the metaverse, crypto / NFTs, and the VR landscape to come

computers were originally made to help people in the world and now we’re so far beyond that first step that we’re not solving real world problems anymore

we’re getting cyberserfed

so our entertainment can be harvested all while being sold even dumber shit than before, still dying for their money knowing no one in power will even try to keep us from dying as the earth tries to shrug us off for our crimes

let alone our own folly

and let alone opportunistic viruses and the opportunistic viruses in suitjackets that keep them circulating and growing because having ungodly sums of money is more important than not slaughtering the working class

so whatever degree of that @Raccoon actually meant… no amount of concern for the future resonates with you?

This is why I still buy physical games.

Third Party Wild Cards: Games that have previously appeared elsewhere.
Out of the wild cards above, I think Mega Man Wily Wars has the strongest odds at an NSO release.
Late to the game, but I'd love to see more of Phantasy Star and Sonic games show up.

As part of your wild card list, Earthworm Jim or Wily Wars would be great gets. One day I do need to go through the classic Mega Man games (only to now realize none are with NSO πŸ™ƒ)

For wild cards that don't have a snowball's chance in hell, more people should get to experience Zero Wing (not just for the memes, but it actually is a half decent shmup), and I'd love to see Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team (but that's talking licensing between Tradewest and Rare, and then entirely dependent on if it's Genesis or SNES; I can't see why they'd want to release both platforms of the game when they're functionally identical). I also wouldn't mind Rock n Roll Racing, but I just found out it was released last year February as part of the Blizzard Arcade Release for $20 (along with The Lost Vikings and Blackthorne); I doubt they'll be making a third of that package redundant

Scrawnton’s chronicle of his own playthrough inspired me to get back into Paper Mario after taking a nearly 4 week break. I had gotten stuck on chapter 4 and I don’t know if it was burnout or not knowing where to go or that damn black Shy Guy but I just beat the chapter tonight. Looking forward to the rest of my journey with this game!
ONE OF US, ONE OF US

Keep us posted! How did you end up liking Chapter 4 in the end?
'MY BABIES!!!!'

'You gotta admit, I played this stinking city, like a harp from hell, aheeheehee'

'Life's a bitch, now so am I'

'........meow'
I can't believe I didn't hallucinate this entire movie and that it's an actual mainstream studio release from the 90s. Priceless.
Best Batman movie.
Honestly...I could see it becoming my favorite (though The Batman is looking INCREDIBLE imo). The villains were terrific, Bruce and Selina had amazing chemistry, and the movie was like a twisted fever dream holiday movie.

thread’s getting heavy, quick someone do something

uh, Nate the CrΓͺpe
Nate the Crate

does Microsoft own the concept of a crate now that they own Crash Bandicoot?

Sometimes easy to lose sight of how many options there are to access games these days, but right now, my in-progress and to start gaming is:

  • Dungeon Encounters on Switch, a download only new IP from classic Final Fantasy designers.
  • Psychonauts 2, a new release and sequel to a cult classic, accessed through Game Pass on Xbox Series S.
  • Zelda: Ocarina of Time, emulated release through my NSO subscription and one of the all time greats.

And starting next, once I've cleared one or two of the above:

  • Lost Odyssey, 2008 JRPG from er, classic Final Fantasy designers, played through backwards compatibility on Series S.
  • No More Heroes 3, new (2021) sequel to cult classics.

Good stuff. Just need to get a few of them finished before Triangle Strategy.
