The true Nintendo essentials are companies like Intelligent Systems, HAL and GameFreak but those are very unlikely to be bought... There's also Grezzo and Good Feel but those are much less essential.

I assume Raccoon intentionally left them out because much of their worth is directly tied to IPs co-owned with Nintendo.

yeah they're pretty much assured

the history section of intsys's wikipedia page is literally like "two dudes from R&D1 were sent off to program some shit and that's how intsys happened"

Yep. I do feel Nintendo should maybe do more with companies like Good Feel, Grezzo and similar. I guess they have very little pressure to outright buy them tho.

Uhh, Take Two with GTA lol
2K and EA honestly. Getting GTA or the yearly sports titles would be huge. I hope it doesn't happen but that's a scenario that would make a difference.
Sony literally cannot afford either Take Two or EA.
I think the two things Sony could do here to respond in any meaningful way is

1) Acquire Square Enix (they'd get Final Fantasy + any Marvel stuff Square Enix has going on, plus they'd own Dragon Quest)
2) Secure GTA 6 as a PS5 timed exclusive (they cannot afford Take Two)
Acquiring SE does nothing for them. They're the de facto exclusive platform for SE's AAA stuff already.

Getting GTA 6 as a timed exclusive is probably something they've already done, yeah.

I'm in work on campus but just sent my colleague to fetch coffee so I could go on this forum and respond to The News by saying:

What the everliving actual fuck in all that is sacred and shitty is going on?

Why do people keep saying the bolded? How is Sony going to respond? Who can they buy that will make any sort of meaningful difference here?

EA but from what I have read they probably wouldn't be able to keep the sports games exclusive so buying them doesn't make as much sense.

Take Two is probably their best bet unless Ubisoft decides to sell finally.

Some of these independent studios are independent only on paper. Some even have their offices right inside Nintendo buildings.

"I'm my own free person dad!"
"Oh yeah, then why you moving back in with the family?!"

As soon as Game Freak has other aspirations other than Pokemon, that's when they get bought up completely by Nintendo.

I think "You get Final Fantasy XIV Online as a part of Playstation Plus" would actually do a lot for them. Not as much as "Call of Duty on Game Pass" but it's not as apples/oranges as you'd think.

Again Sony does not actually have the cash or capital to buy any of them (EA/Take Two/Ubisoft). Their market valuation is too high.

MS is a multi trillion dollar company, Sony has peanuts compared to that.

I am not sure about their other sports games, but FIFA can not be exclusive due to contracts.

They can do that without going through the headache (and money burn) of buying SE outright.

Fair point. Not sure how Sony can respond then. They will have to make something big happen though.

Crash is a bigger IP than Banjo ever was at any point.. so I guess, at very least, Microsoft will deal with legacy content like they do with Banjo... (get the Xbox games re-released all that);

Now, if they'll invest in the IP in any meaningful way is hard to say; Banjo surely is enjoying his stay on the fridge since Nuts & Bolts...

Why, though?

They still have FIFA, that's their single biggest third party game. There's really not much they can do to replace the loss of CoD so what can they even try to do?

Sony will not buy a publisher, this is not what they want to do. They're like Nintendo, their first party offerings are the most importing factor for people choosing their platform. They'll continue investing in them, even more than before. Making a $200m The Last of Us would sell much more PS5 consoles than $68b Activision selling Xbox consoles.

Would Microsoft actually be considered a monopoly in this current state? They have major competition in Sony, Nintendo, and Tencent, with plenty of big outside companies like Ubisoft, EA, CDPR, Take Two, Capcom, and SquareEnix. This isn't like Disney buying 20th Century Fox and pretty much controlling the movie industry.

While I get the base argument, for your specific example, I think COD is a bigger system seller than The Last of Us. Those games sell massive amounts of copies each year, even during down years, and Warzone is huge. While The Last of Us games sold well, they are peanuts compared to the COD machine. There's a reason why both Microsoft and Sony thought getting exclusive content for COD was a big deal.

Any move Sony makes will be more defensive than anything. For instance, they don't need to buy Square Enix because Square games already sell great on PlayStation. However, Sony's need to make sure that Square games continue to release on their system. If that means they need to buy S-E to protect those interests, then that is what they have to do.

They have been in console race for more than 20 years but failed to create an universe more than Halo-Gears-Forza. They have tried everything, created open world action games, funded JRPG's, tried the revive Rare best way possible... None of them worked out. Xbox remained as a Halo machine. "If we buy this IP, their audience will flock to our platform" is a broken philosophy and they still haven't given up on that. And now they're hoarding classic franchises, keeping them away from their home. I'll always hope Phil will do the right thing and let the things go.

Exclusive CoD will sell more PC and graphics cards rather than Xbox consoles. Playstation owners will not buy a whole console for a single game.

I know this is anecdotal as hell, but I know a lot of people who own a PS4 (and previously PS3) exclusively to play the annual CoD, FIFA, and maybe AssCreed releases. No reason for them not to buy a Series S/X to play those same games in the future, especially if they have not invested in a PS5 so far.

Fiendcode over at install base put these together when the Zynga acquisition was announced

Activision: 49.88B
EA: 37.27B
Take-Two: 18.98B
Embracer: 10.56B
Ubisoft: 5.35B

Bandai Namco: 16.35B
Konami: 6.57B
Koei Tecmo: 6.31B
Square Enix: 6.26B
Capcom: 4.75B
Sega Sammy: 3.67B

I wasn't aware that BN was this much bigger than the others.

The group chat I'm in with a bunch of my cousins is already saying that they'll move to Xbox if CoD becomes exclusive. This is gonna be wild.

Surprised Ubisoft is so small personally.

If they specifically want couch gaming/TV console, this is correct, Xbox will be attractive to those people. But if not, PC will always be a better deal. Xbox doesn't have anything that's not on PC.

Where's everyone's favourite company Level-5?

Don't be so sure. COD promotion and early access to DLC was important in selling consoles, first on the Xbox 360 and then on the PS4. Both companies know that people will buy consoles to get the best COD experience.

I'm fine with the whole Microsoft/Activision thing ONLY because Microsoft will start cleaning up shit. Activision is full of shitty people and if Microsoft clears them out...
man that is some magical thinking right there

surely being bought by a bigger company will purge it of evils?

I know that the roadmap is shadow-ditch Kotick without having to acknowledge it, but there’s no way in hell that cuts out all the things wrong at every level

plus what the fuck do we know about Microsoft? who knows what shit whoever’s been pulling there?

CEO changes and buyouts as panacea to inner culture and clusters of shitbags is the optics engineering of the Reagan Cascade

my experience has been that any company big enough for an HR department knows that HR is shadow PR

it’s more often about getting people to be quiet about doing awful things and be even more quiet about calling them out

I know I’m just ranting at this point but I’m super wary of this line of thinking

I think this is an overestimation of amount of people who are willing to buy both of consoles. And the PS fanbase will not abandon PS for a game that's not even exclusive to Xbox.

You're right to be wary. This article came out 5 days (!) ago

Things will hopefully improve but this isn't necessarily going to make it easier. If anything, making A-B part of a mega corporation with 180'000 employees (vs. ~10'000) is just going to make it harder.

COD will eventually become exclusive. People overestimate peoples undying loyalty to Sony. The PS2 was by far the most popular console of its generation and those same fans will more than happy to jump into the Xbox 360.

Bandai has kit, toy, figure, anime and a couple other divisions. They own Sunrise as one example

CoD will always be released on PC therefore it won't have Xbox exclusivity. Many people would rather go to PC than buy another console. Mainstream is not like us, hoarding all platforms is not an common act.

Takes I have read this morning on the internet:

  • Sony should go third party
  • There will be a lot of used PS5's for sale over the next few days....
  • Sony may have to be absorbed by Apple to stay competitive, unfortunately.
  • PS5 will likely be the last console hardware from Sony
  • PlayStation is finished

And a lot of variations of the same.

here I made a handy console mascots chart

consolemascots.jpg
the funny part is that Sony didn't even had the vague thought of actually owning Crash at any point... they funded and published the earlier titles and that's about it.

At least Nintendo actually did own Banjo for a brief moment lol
