Activision is a Microsoft owned company...

I hope they'll hold a proper funeral for Crash and Spyro. Bury next to Banjo please.

when I die and go to hell, the first thing I'll do is tell steve jobs about how those sneaky macintosh third party software developers who knocked off his interface now own the entire industry of video games

To be blunt, I think I prefer them on permanent hiatus with Microsoft, than being held hostage by sexual predators on Activision...

Now... if Microsoft could re-release Wrath of Cortex, Twinsanity, Titans and MoM on Gamepass, I'd be grateful for the time being..

I actually toyed with the idea of making a general acquisition discussion thread on Fami because of recent stuff but I was afraid that there might not be much to discuss.

I think cod stays multiplat
Warzone does. Main CoD games will not. If the Xbox exclusive CoD starts marketing in 2024 for a Holiday 2024, that would give folks plenty of time to get an Xbox Series X (hopefully the supply chain will be back to normal by then).

I don't see why some folks aren't seeing the long game here...

Honest assessment, who are the big guns left?

Western-
EA
Ubisoft
Take Two
CD Projekt Red

Asia-
Square Enix
Capcom
Sega/Atlus
Bandai Namco
Koei Tecmo

Ubisoft seems to be in no interest to sell, at least while Yves is around. CD Projekt Red is on the smaller side, but most of their sales are probably PC anyway. Take Two would be an interesting pick up for either Sony or MS if only for GTA. Their market cap is roughly a third of Acti/Bliz, but it still wouldn't be cheap. IMO, EA is the big whale left. Anyone who gets exclusivity on EA Sports games is looking at a huge money stream. For the longest time we said that the likes of EA and Acti/Bliz were too big and expensive, but here we are and Activision is ~25% larger than EA going by market cap.

To this point MS hasn't dipped much into Japanese developers, probably since the Xbox brand has never done well over there. I don't see them buying one of those companies any time soon, but if they do that is when Sony needs to react big time. Sony doesn't need to buy the Asia devs, but they need to make sure those games remain on their platform. Again, I don't see Microsoft going after those guys at the moment, but if they do then the arms race really gets ugly.

As for Nintendo, they better hope neither of these guys touches the likes of Sega, Capcom, or Bandai. Especially Square!

Woke up to find one of our cats dead this morning so I’m a bit of a mess right now. Y’all probably won’t hear from me for a day or two
That's horrible, I'm so sorry to hear this, buddy. Take care of yourself and grind some Dragon Age, Skyward Sword, whatever will bring you joy.

I want to practice my Japanese studies and translate this but I'm just kinda pressed for time this morning and concerned by suswave's reaction here 😬 what is the Wii U and 3DS eShop news here? Hoping it's just the same thing as before, that the shops are staying open but will only take eShop cards now..
oh I just use the highlight -> translate feature on my phone

and yeah it’s what apparently everybody except me read last year

my guys are region-locked to a country I no longer live in so old credit cards were my easiest way to navigate

I think I can make a secondary account for the Wii U but I might be a little boned on the 3DS front

physical games it is I guess!

I’m so sorry, that’s awful. I know I’d be in shambles if one of our sweet beeps died. Please take care.

I'm always here for you if you need someone who would post about how Nintendo and KT should merge.

And does so even more after today.

My fear was mostly that it'd turn into corporate fanfiction with people posting outlandish scenarios about which companies should merge.

But I don't think any one of us could have come up with Microsoft buying A-B so I don't even know what to believe anymore.

yeah, the fanfiction floodgates are open

ubisoft, ea, take 2, square enix, bamco

sky's the limit apparently

From what I've read and searched this morning, A-B has the biggest market share of all 3rd parties. It is literally open season across the board now.

Well making a competitive hardware won't matter... All thirds will be bought

Nintendo doing their own thing and keep indies as "stars" will help. However First party IP will be more important than ever.

nintendo essentials list, by raccoon

bandai namco: does dev support, makes spinoffs, made the last couple smash bros

koei tecmo: made a very well selling fire emblem for int sys

platinum: develops an IP they own, and they might've done astral chain idk but regardless they're important. made star fox zero

these are the only irreplaceable ones, don't let anyone tell you otherwise

I'm sorry but I gotta confiscate your Touch Generations badge for leaving out indieszero

oh shit you're right

though obviously it would suck to lose them but they aren't irreplaceable the way the ones I listed are. Nintendo could make bba internally if they really wanted to

but yeah, there are a handful like mercury steam and indieszero that would suck to lose too

I'm fine with the whole Microsoft/Activision thing ONLY because Microsoft will start cleaning up shit. Activision is full of shitty people and if Microsoft clears them out...

Nintendo should probably just keep investing in strengthening its own studios and that's it. I don't think they're in a position to buy/merge with smaller studios, unless they specifically ask to be bought. Even if Nintendo is sitting in wads of cash.

The situation with Xbox buying two of the largest 3rd parties in under 2 years is pretty terrifying, even if it means (in the short term) good news for Xbox users.

I think they can do that and buy a company like Sega. Nintendo has a market cap of over 54B while Sega is sitting at around 3B. It's very feasible.

But yes the Microsoft thing is incredibly worrying. It's not good for the industry at all because Sony will absolutely seek to respond. I do think Microsoft is more likely to share their newly acquired IPs with competitors but that doesn't mean I want them gobbling up big 3rd party devs lol.

I wouldn't read into it too much. Spyro and Crash just aren't in development as of currently, so they weren't mentioned.

While I do think Spyro and Crash have a chance to comeback, Microsoft purchased Activision because it's a COD machine. They will want a new COD out every year plus continued support for Warzone so I don't see a ton of shifting in priorities for these devs in the near term.

Why do people keep saying the bolded? How is Sony going to respond? Who can they buy that will make any sort of meaningful difference here?

The true Nintendo essentials are companies like Intelligent Systems, HAL and GameFreak but those are very unlikely to be bought... There's also Grezzo and Good Feel but those are much less essential.

I think the two things Sony could do here to respond in any meaningful way is

1) Acquire Square Enix (they'd get Final Fantasy + any Marvel stuff Square Enix has going on, plus they'd own Dragon Quest)
2) Secure GTA 6 as a PS5 timed exclusive (they cannot afford Take Two)

2K and EA honestly. Getting GTA or the yearly sports titles would be huge. I hope it doesn't happen but that's a scenario that would make a difference.
