I find structured gameplay elements in video games as satisfying, which is why I love FFVI’s Espers and Crisis Core’s mission structure.

But yeah, if overused, it can be annoying. Reminds me of a saying we have here: β€œThe few pleases, but too much annoys”

Gonna make an anti-capitalistic rant:



This is just Disney forcing their IPs in a worldwide popular video game for the sake as using it as promotion for their movies and stuff. I know it’s a fun game and the idea of skins is phenomenal, but I also see it as corporations forcing their content on us to get us to spend money on their insaciable money growth, for the sake of pleasing a 0.000000000000001% of the population

Oh I'm playing this game alright! You can't stop me!

Kingdom Hearts 2 is the one game that comes to mind in regards to this subject. Though it doesn't have skill trees, the game lets you spec into whatever build that you have enough AP (Ability Points) for and a lot of these abilities shine the most in the post-game.

Some random thoughts that I don't really have a good home (I'm not touching the Direct speculation thread without a 10 foot pole right now) for:

Listened to the Nate the Hate episode yesterday. Oddly I'm not disappointed by the possibility of a "partner" Direct. If anything that feels like it significantly increases the likelihood of a bigger Direct and hardware reveal event in March/April. Also, I had assumed that Nintendo doesn't really have a whole lot to show this month anyways and I'd be more keen to see what Square-Enix, Atlus/Sega, etc would be bringing. So it's all good here. And maybe we get some additional 3rd party stuff in NSO announced?

With the Switch 2 hardware imminent and whatever is going on with MS this definitely feels like we're on the cusp of some major industry changes this quarter.

I did not have a TWEWY Acoustic album by the original composer on my bingo card for this year.

And does anyone have this problem with their backlog where you look at HLTB and think to yourself "Ok, this doesn't seem that bad. If I can get 1 hour a day for games, I can clear <TITLE> in X months/weeks" and then you discover two weeks later it's all a goddamn lie and you're lucky if you can get 1 hour a week and left wondering where that time is going? 😭

The only time you should be allowed to unlock everything in a skill tree is either in a post-game or New Game+ environment. Otherwise there's no risk or consequences to your decisions. I'll grant exceptions where the expectation is that you will unlock most or all in games with a single tree (ie. Chrono Trigger or Octopath Traveler) but those tend to be much smaller trees.

That said, I sort of liked Diablo III's weird system where you gradually unlocked all your skills as you leveled and could respec freely but that was mostly because ultimately at the high-end the gear you farm is what's going to dictate your build which is an inversion of how it's normally done.

I vaguely remember an old CliffyB blog post where he theorized, around the time of Gears of War 1's release, that looping in RPG features into action games was going to be a huge thing going forward mostly because it's a cheap/easy way to keep players engaged (hooray skinner boxes). For all his faults, he wasn't wrong about that.

KH games are pretty good at making sure that you don't have enough AP points to allocate to all the skill you've unlocked, and they're often designed such that you'll have more stuff you're unlocking if you keep playing past the final boss.

I feel you. The whole "If I do x in y time I'l be done by z!" is a pattern I regularly fall into, not just with games :')
