Honestly? At best, I'd expect the order to be given to Toriyama and his aids to give the game a more "mature" artstyle to help it appeal more to the West (which should be reasonable, it wouldn't take much to "DBZ-ify" Dragon Quest any further), and amp up the razzle-dazzle for attack animations because "spectacle" is easily the one area that DQ can always improve on. Then just do more in the same vein of what the series already does pretty well, because it's always been pretty damn mature in storytelling, stakes and scope. Like, they talk about how "the player's choices may impact the story" that's made for adults and it's like...DQ5 already did that, ages ago. So, if they're just doing more in that vein, then great!
Since the game still has to be able to, first and foremost, be able to sell well at home, I'm not exactly that these changes to be as "grand" as some others.
Now granted, SoP:FFO is another dark-fantasy "masocore" action game from Team Ninja, much like Nioh before it. And so, it's likely safe to assume that in many cases, the choice to be darker, bloodier and bleaker is wholly intentional.
But..."bland" and "boring-looking"?
