As i grind through my JRPGs and build up hype and anticipation for Switch 2, I am going to watch every Nintendo Direct / Presentation from the Switch era in order, starting with the Nintendo Switch Presentation in January 2017. I am going to try to clear out my backlog this year and give Switch a lot of attention before the next chapter starts.

Not here to judge but I don't know why some of you want to know about a system so early in the year when it's probably coming out by the Holiday season. Like don't get me wrong new hardware is cool and all but wouldn't you rather them do a 4 to 5 months marketing cycle before release than 9 to 10 months?

I'm also on team February tho I think the air date will be late February so hopefully it would only be 2 to 4 weeks after the Direct they send a press release announcing that they are expecting to release a new system this year.

I think there will be a 4-5months marketing cycle in any case, so to me a January/February announcement means a may/june release 🤞🏻😁

So speaking about games we could possibly see early in Switch 2's life, I can see a 3d Yoshi game that takes more inspiration from Kirby and the Forgotten Lands. Another Switch game that I hadn't kept up on sales wise and didn't know it's practically sold 7 million copies so far, just bonkers really but I think Nintendo are finally learning.

Their comments to Ubisoft about Mario Rabids Sparks of Hope, makes me believe that Nintendo now see that the best result is to not over saturate a platform full of games in a particular franchise. So with this we should see many of their dormant IP's being revisited to spread the interest around to games that haven't done so well in the past.

We had a lot of wild fun predicting the Direct date in The Legendary Speculator Challenge last thread, but this time I want to open up the guessing game to as many people as possible! The Great Direct Date Guess Event is a badge challenge with two badges up for grabs! It’s very simple to participate, either reply to this post or @ message me in a post and tell me what dates you believe the Nintendo Direct will air and the Switch 2 will be announced in Pacific Time. If you do not reply or @ message me, I will not consider it an official entry. The deadline to enter is December 31st at 11:59 PM Pacific Time and you'll know I have accepted your prediction when I Yeah! your post.
My entry:

February 7th, 2024

I trust the patterns. Last two years have been Wednesday in the first full week of the month.

This is also the week before Mario vs. Donkey Kong, so I expect a demo shadowdrop as part of the presentation.

Basically. I’ve believed Emily for years and years. Idk why I’d think something else is happening other than standard ports for Prime 2 and 3.
Because Emily wasn't definitive about it, and didn't know if 2/3 ports were still the plan when Prime R wrapped up. Belmont, the person who gave the most detail about Prime R back in September 2021, suggested Nintendo had reconsidered and viewed Prime R as the standard to aim for with 2 and 3. Belmont was very accurate with everything to do with Prime Remastered, and seemingly knew more than Emily at the time.

I'd say the jury is out on it, personally. Nintendo could easily use outsourcing with light supervision from Retro for remasters of 2 and 3, and that way they'd have further filler titles for their schedule in the next few years; I think full remasters would land a little harder than ports. And, with development demands climbing, they're certainly going to keep looking for less resource intensive efforts for their schedule.

I think you're getting this a little mixed up. Looking at the post, the original plan was that Retro would redo the whole trilogy. Nintendo reconsidered having Retro make MP4 once they saw the work on MPR. Once Retro began work on MP4, the new plan was that Retro would finish up MPR and then Nintendo would contract out the work for the other games, but Belmont said he was doubtful if that was still the case.

After seeing all the studios credited assisting on MPR, I personally think they (the assisting studios) will probably continue doing asset work on 2/3. I imagine most of the hard work was already done with MPR, barring the motion controls for MP3. I really hope we don't have to keep seeing that one headline about it being unlikely. The same employee said those could be done with a team of 4-5 people in a year. I know Nate and Grubb have floated the idea of simple HD remasters for 2/3, but they also got bamboozled by MPTHD. No offense to them, a lot did.

The deadline to enter is December 31st at 11:59 PM Pacific Time and you'll know I have accepted your prediction when I Yeah! your post. At that point I will screencap your answer and ultimately compile a chart in the OP to track participants, so make sure you’ve been added to it by January 4th. You do not have to predict both the Direct and the Switch 2 dates if you don’t want to, but there are no downsides to doing both. For The Great Direct Date Guess Event, you only need the dates to be clear (ie Wednesday January 3rd or Thursday February 4th), so you do not have to worry at all about predicting the time further otherwise.

If you believe an event would air or be announced at midnight Pacific time, for the purposes of proper guessing please put the second of the two days involved. For example, if you believe the Switch 2 will be announced at midnight between Tuesday January 2nd and Wednesday January 3rd Pacific Time, please put your guess down for January 3rd.

@Aurc is helping with creating the awesome badges for this event and we have one design ready to share right now! Winners of predicting the Direct air date will get the Direct Date Champion Badge!

Winners of predicting the Switch 2 Public Announcement Date will get the Switch 2 Date Legend Badge! (This includes a video, tweet, press release etc.) Like the Switch 2 itself, it is still being diligently worked on behind the scenes, but once the design is ready, I will share it in the thread and update this post! Thanks again Aurc for all of your help :)

So yes, please make sure to get your guesses in by December 31st at 11:59 PM Pacific Time! Have fun Fami!

Update: Here's the design for the Switch 2 Date Legend Badge! I hope one of us manages to win it, so definitely get your guesses in soon :)

Nintendo Switch 2 reveal:
2024-01-18 (18th of January in US Pacific time.)

Next Direct:
2024-02-14 (14th of February in US Pacific Time)

To be clear these are the dates of airing, I'm not counting the teaser (so this would be the day the trailer drops, not the day they post Mario behind a curtain).

And yes I know I'm being a bit 🤪

Everything in time. Chrono will get its turn soon. But first we need a remake to this:
Soul_Blazer_box_art.jpg

Seriously, this game was up there with ALttP and Secret of Mana, one of the best SNES games I've played. Why this and sequels got forgotten, I can't understand. Always anticipated a fourth game for N64 but it never came.

And it never got re-released! No PSone collection (all other SE games got PSone re-releases) and no Virtual Console releases. And unlike Chrono, this got an official SNES release in Europe, one of rare JRPG's on the system in the region.

Interesting never heard of this game but if it’s anything like the other games you mentioned I’ll have to give it a go at some point.

Also every direct thread I posted super Mario rpg remake gifs and it happened lol

No Soul Blazer return unless it's accompanied by the sequels!!!

Have you heard of Illusion of Gaia or Terranigma? Soul Blazer was the first in the (sorta unofficial) trilogy.

+1 vote for the Quintet trilogy. That needs to happen at some point.

In Europe, we had none of the popular JRPG's on SNES: no Mario RPG, no Final Fantasy games, no Chrono Trigger and no Earthbound. But we had Soul Blazer. It was one of the most popular games among the SNES circle back in my home country, even more popular than Zelda as there were more copies for Soul Blazer to rent (ALttP copies were in German language in my country so everyone avoided that).

It's a Mana-like action RPG but there were puzzles like Zelda so a full 3D remake like Trials would be more fitting, I think. Square managed to remake ActRaiser beautifully, I'm sure they'll find the best way to bring this gem (and the followups) back.

I thought there were rights issues/prolems finding the person that could license the Quintet titles? Though with ActRaiser getting a remake, maybe Square figured things out 🤔

If they ever make a 3D remake of Illusion of Gaia/Time, with Trials of Mana-like visuals and voice acting, I wonder if they will keep some of the darker elements of the game, like
one of the villains being literally burned alive.
That alone could be enough to get an M rating unless they tone it down, methinks.

Nah, that was just a speculation. Square completely owns the Enix library, Quintet included. They just choose to do nothing about the rest of the game. Only ActRaiser got re-releases, one for Wii Virtual Console, and one remake for the modern consoles.

Square-enix today just don't want to do anything with the Enix back catalog. No virtual console releases, no collections, no nothing. There are lots of other non- Quintet Enix SNES games waiting to see the light of day again: The 7th Saga, Paladin's Quest, EVO: Search for Eden, Mystic Ark, Wonder Project, Brain Lord... Just rotting on the dusty shelves of SE's archive basement.

I genuinely expected that spoiler tag to say Hamlet

I’m…. Very doubtful that Nintendo decided to give Retro Prime 4 after seeing an extremely early build of Prime Remastered.

Is the idea here that Nintendo was shocked that Retro could still do good visuals or something? Retro’s art director (and former creative director) even left immediately after they were given Prime 4.

Prime Remastered features almost no gameplay changes. What would impress Nintendo enough to have them make a massive budget original FPS?

Prime Remastered as a way to give their programmers and artists something to do during pre production makes a lot more sense.

Retro staff wise is massively different from 2019 and I’m guessing the actual plan was to give the game to Retro so they could get a bunch of good hires.

Oh, the whole post talks about how Retro was brought in board to assist Namco Bandai with level design. Then Nintendo saw the art they were doing for MPR and figured they might as well give the whole MP4 project to Retro. I was just reiterating the bits about the art as they're more relevant to MP2/3.

This still makes very little sense as their art director immediately left afterwards and not for a great opportunity (it took him a couple years to end up as the art director for the Sims)

I’m guessing the rumor was false as nothing lines up.

Tomorrow (in my time zone) is finally the last day of the year.

And then 2024 is coming.

The year of a new generation of Nintendo HW coming. Everyone here are extremely excited.

I think Kirby will skip next year, unless it’s a spinoff game, but in 2025 I expect the next Kirby for sure. Really hoping for a Forgotten Land follow up, that was the best Kirby game in decades.

Just stopping in to say I really, really hope Prime 2 / 3 is part of the next General Direct. It will have been about a year since Prime 1 had its announcement, and surely (I mean, SURELY?) Prime 4 is not far from being shown for the first time. I've been predicting the Pikmin 1+2 treatment on Prime 2+3, but who knows for sure - I have been doubting lately if we get them in any form. One thing that's just about guaranteed at least that excites me is more footage and perhaps new features revealed for TTYD. We're at the point where I would want most brand new games saved for the next system. Just a few more remakes / remasters sprinkled in, like WW / TP and MP 2 /3, would make me very happy with the Switch's last few months.

I want to know how much it is so I can start budgeting
Yeah for real. How much do I need to set aside for the console, games and accessories.

Also, need to know if the Voucher Deal will continue with Switch 2 because wow 100 dollars for Two 70 dollar games would be amazing.
