I hope we get Kirby Air Ride courses in the new Mario Kart. And Diddy Kong Racing. I have no idea how Kirby Air Ride courses would translate, but considering the mutations of FZero tracks working so well in the Wii U DLC it's definitely possible. And such a good excuse to add Kirby, Meta Knight, and King Dedede to the roster, and/or the ladder 2 as Mission Mode enemies! Machine Passage, Frozen Hillside, Celestial Valley would all be insane, the sound especially. Gourmet Race too
Stop, you're going to make me cry. That would make me so happy. The main thing I think would be getting rid of the grind rails and turning them into different shortcut or transportation types. But yeah, the team takes liberties with their redesigns so I don't think that would stop them or even slow them down. I think Kirby would make a lot of sense as a character, too.

I still remember that Smash Rosalina trailer. Got me hyped for nothing.

I believe the Nintendo Direct will be announced on February 14th, 2 PM Pacific, and the Nintendo Switch 2 will be announced March 13th, 6 AM Pacific.
Just to confirm for the Nintendo Direct, what time do you think it will air?

I actually dont want to see anything from them unless it’s switch 2 announcement. I think a direct is pointless for the OG switch.

I 100% trust the process we getting Kirby Representation in the next Mario Kart. Whether it be an Animal Crossing/Zelda type edition either a game or location based track, and new vehicle parts like the Warp Star

Kirby Air Riders representation may be a stretch, as Nintendo may see those games as purely spin off. But alongside Diddy Kong Racing tracks which come from a more popular game and off the back of the Kongs having a specific kart scene in the Mario Movie, more FZero tracks too, i think players would be very happy to see these tributes to Nintendo's past racing entries

There's a lot of variables to this one. Personally, I don't think any of the currently announced games need time in a Direct. They all seem like randomly dropped Twitter trailers. I'm sure they'll be great games, but they definitely give off end-of-life-cycle vibes. I also suspect a few games that are currently finished might have been pushed out to bolster the new console's first year lineup, like the Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War remake. There might be some smaller 3rd party ports coming, but I imagine most big studios have had their hands on Switch 2 dev kits for a while and are busy working on next gen ports.

Speaking of the Switch 2, Nintendo will likely want to announce the it before the end of their fiscal year in March to raise stock value and reassure investors. So, my gut feeling is that there will not be a Direct at all. Nintendo knows fans are waiting for the Switch successor and no new information on that could overshadow any games they announce, if they even have any left to announce for the Switch.

If I had to choose though, I'd say a Mini Direct in late January, an announcement trailer for the Switch 2 in February with a full unveiling in March.
I don't know how i ended up back here, but you're spitting many facts on the fiscal year. If the Switch 2 has not been discussed with investors, i'm sure every hair folicle on Furukawa's chinny chin chin is riddled with sweat in anticipation of the fiscal year reports

But i feel it's most likely the investors already know the release date of the Switch 2. This considering they already bringing demos to journalists, already given dispersed the dev kits (although i'm not sure how much this means considering was so long ago), and Xbox had the informations in those leaked court documents

But most importantly, you're forgetting Princess Peach's Showtime! They must not overshadow that game! At least in my opinion, i am just very enthused for the Showtime, and will be furious if i am not given a detailed overview because they too busy with Switch 2

We had a lot of wild fun predicting the Direct date in The Legendary Speculator Challenge last thread, but this time I want to open up the guessing game to as many people as possible! The Great Direct Date Guess Event is a badge challenge with two badges up for grabs! It’s very simple to participate, either reply to this post or @ message me in a post and tell me what dates you believe the Nintendo Direct will air and the Switch 2 will be announced in Pacific Time. If you do not reply or @ message me, I will not consider it an official entry. The deadline to enter is December 31st at 11:59 PM Pacific Time and you'll know I have accepted your prediction when I Yeah! your post. At that point I will screencap your answer and ultimately compile a chart in the OP to track participants, so make sure you’ve been added to it by January 4th. You do not have to predict both the Direct and the Switch 2 dates if you don’t want to, but there are no downsides to doing both. For The Great Direct Date Guess Event, you only need the dates to be clear (ie Wednesday January 3rd or Thursday February 4th), so you do not have to worry at all about predicting the time further otherwise.

If you believe an event would air or be announced at midnight Pacific time, for the purposes of proper guessing please put the second of the two days involved. For example, if you believe the Switch 2 will be announced at midnight between Tuesday January 2nd and Wednesday January 3rd Pacific Time, please put your guess down for January 3rd.

@Aurc is helping with creating the awesome badges for this event and we have one design ready to share right now! Winners of predicting the Direct air date will get the Direct Date Champion Badge!

Winners of predicting the Switch 2 Public Announcement Date will get the Switch 2 Date Legend Badge! (This includes a video, tweet, press release etc.) Like the Switch 2 itself, it is still being diligently worked on behind the scenes, but once the design is ready, I will share it in the thread and update this post! Thanks again Aurc for all of your help :)

So yes, please make sure to get your guesses in by December 31st at 11:59 PM Pacific Time! Have fun Fami!

Update: Here's the design for the Switch 2 Date Legend Badge! I hope one of us manages to win it, so definitely get your guesses in soon :)

I think the Direct will air February 7th, 2024, and the Switch 2 will be announced March 20th, 2024. That last one I have zero confidence in :p

I share your same level of confidence for my own Switch 2 guess haha. Whoever guesses the Switch 2 announcement date is an absolute legend in my book because we basically have only the vaguest of vibes and that it probably won't be a weekend date to go off of lol. At least with a Direct Date, it's basically only Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and we have game marketing and patterns to consider haha.

Got you down btw :)

Ah screw it, you know what, I have three dates that I'll be gambling on (if its fine):

January 30th (breaking precedent)
February 6th
February 8th

Live at 2 PM Pacific, announced the day before from either of the three dates at 6 AM Pacific.

Since a badge is on the line, you have to pick one date for the badge challenge.

Outside of the badge challenge, it’s totally cool to have multiple guesses for the day or change your guess later on. No pressure this is just for fun :)

@xghost777

February 9th for the Direct, June 26 for the Switch 2 announcement
When do you think we getting the Switch 2 in our hands then? I really been feeling the Summer announcement too, along with a live event, for early 2025 release. Nintendo relies too keenly on First Party lineup. May be a waste the first Christmas after a fall 2024 release with 2 first party games maximum to date

@xghost777 When you get the chance, please get me down for an April 4th, 2024 New Switch reveal at a live event. Alongside January 10th 2024 at 9am CST for Nintendo Direct. Such a nice day over a hopefully warm spring break for a new Nintendo console announcement! They already know this week worked wonders with the Mario Movie release. Assuming we get a Switch 2 at our doorstep this next Fall, April 4th would be a beautiful day

Don’t worry, the Nintendo direct drops january 7th, listen:
I was never smart……

Welcome to Famiboard’s 7th Nintendo Direct Speculation ST! We are back for another wild round of Nintendo Direct speculation and I’m so excited to once again be hosting this amazing thread! This time we are all asking ourselves, what lies beyond the door? The Thousand Year Door hasn’t been opened in twenty years one thousand years and just beyond it lies the future of Nintendo! What that looks like exactly is what we are here to discuss!

We are only a few days away from finally being in the expected year where we will hear about and perhaps actually play the long awaited Switch successor! At thread launch, approximately 116,000 posts have been written so far on Famiboards in just the Future Hardware and Switch 2 STs alone so to say this console has been highly anticipated is an understatement. It’s with this shadow hanging over us now more than ever, that we will embark on this speculation journey! While Switch 2 looms large, and I’ll discuss how that affects the thread’s life and events a little deeper in, we are certainly still largely expecting a software showcase in the next month or two. Nintendo’s current dated release calendar ends in March after all with Princess Peach Showtime and there are only a few undated games from them and third parties beyond that. The next show will likely cover us through roughly July or August. Will it also be the home of the Switch 2 announcement? We shall see!

RESOURCES

This section of the OP will compile a lot of information and resources to help form the basis of good discussion. Let’s start simply with Nintendo’s release calendar which is becoming quite sparse especially as long term DLC has mostly all been completed.

Another Code Recollection January 19th
Mario Vs Donkey Kong February 16th
Princess Peach Showtime! March 22nd
Splatoon 3 Side Order Spring 2024
Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD Summer 2024
Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door 2024
Metroid Prime 4 TBD

We have here four remakes and three brand new experiences. Of particular note I feel are Princess Peach Showtime, Splatoon 3 Side Order, Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door, and Metroid Prime 4. Both Peach and Side Order were given new trailers in the last Nintendo Direct, but as the two immediate, new experiences we’ll likely get some good final showings. While Side Order mostly needs a release date, Princess Peach Showtime is still somewhat shrouded in mystery as many questions about the game’s structure remain and there are more transformations to be revealed or discovered ourselves! Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door Switch is a little more interesting for speculation than it appears at first glance as we’ve already discovered new NPCs in the game. What other new content will it get beyond the graphical overhaul largely remains to be seen, but I’m personally hoping for a new story expansion of some sort. Finally, we have Metroid Prime 4 which to this day still has virtually nothing known about it. While I of course #trusttheprocess that this game will eventually come out and be amazing, I do wonder exactly what Prime 4’s chances are to be here. Switch 2’s reveal and release plans should greatly inform its likelihood of appearance here especially if it is cross gen or not.

Similar to the more sparse release calendar, our rumored games list is sadly a bit small walking into this thread. Should we get any updates or substantial rumors (no shaky information or accounts) I will of course add games onto the list and threadmark when appropriate. Twitter is pretty unreliable these days, so if you do bring info to share (rumors and actual news) please make sure to transcribe it.

Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War Remake
Donkey Kong
Metroid Prime 2 Echoes

Of the three, the rumored Fire Emblem Genealogy Remake is definitely on top this time as it is allegedly finished and can drop whenever. New Donkey Kong is a longstanding rumor and he is getting a new theme park expansion this year so a new game or port is expected for synergy. Perhaps that is just the Mario Vs Donkey Kong remake or perhaps that’s only the start. I sure hope it’s the latter! Finally, last Summer we did get a fresh rumor on Metroid Prime 2 Echoes that so far hasn’t panned out. Depending on when Prime 4 drops, this rumored remaster might not fit in, but I know I’d love to see it. Before I wrap up this part of the rumor section, I will mention there was technically a Zelda remake rumor from Serkan Toto in a now deleted tweet that dated it in 2023. That obviously didn’t happen so while I don’t want to give it a full spotlight, I will say this is good grounds for speculation regardless as Zelda is traditionally an annual series and the Wii U versions in particular seem like great cross gen releases.

While we are on the subject of rumors, I just want to remind you all of good guidelines and practices to always remember when discussing rumors and insider information. Make sure you do not randomly AT message and beg insiders who post on our boards for information as that is deeply awkward for all parties involved. Whenever is safely possible, please point people to the direct sources of information to avoid games of telephone and the hurt feelings that come with them. If Hide or Reply Tags are in use, please use them as well for all related discussion as we do not want to get people in trouble. If you are sharing sensitive info yourself, consider using higher limit Hide and Reply tags if you want to limit the spread of information, but please know it’s not a perfect solution. In general with all rumor talk, please keep in mind we often only have a fraction of the information that may no longer be true if it ever was at all. There’s no reason to be dismissive and rude to others or to be weirdly attached both in favor of or against video game news, rumors, speculation or even games themselves that may not pan out. The golden rule above all else is to always be kind to each other so we can have a fun time discussing games and hanging out together!

Before I get to our thread games and close out the OP, I do want to add one last section to the Resources section in regards to the frequently asked questions regarding thread life as well as Direct spoilers. If no Pyoro-style leaks happen, this thread will run until the next major game showcase from Nintendo is announced. That means either the standard Nintendo Direct, a Mini Direct, or a Partner Showcase as well as a potential unique ending if a Switch 2 presentation is announced that announces and covers games. If we just get some Switch style reveal trailer dropped that only shows a few seconds each of a few games, that does not count and the thread will remain open or be reopened if necessary. If Pyoro-style leaks do occur for a presentation, this thread will run until the end of the actual event as it did for ST 6. At any time, anyone is welcome to make a leak free Direct Speculation thread though I do highly encourage it to be made after Pyoro-style leaks occur since we don't want to split the community if possible. Personally, I hope we can all stick together to the end this time, but we’ll see what happens!

THREAD GAMES AND EVENTS

To close out this OP, we do of course have thread games and events! First, we will have polls that will shift over the thread’s life. To kick things off we have the classic #TeamJanuary, #TeamFebruary, and #TeamMarch etc. showdown, but with a twist! This time the three main positions are split in half for a total of six teams! That’s because we are adding one other variable to the mix with a simple question, will your Direct Month Team also have the Switch 2 announcement as well? We are counting some kind of public announcement here so it could be a video, a tweet, a press release etc. Choose wisely, rep your team proudly, and have fun seeing where everyone winds up!

Weekly thread questions of course return as well and will aim to cycle out every Wednesday into Thursday night Pacific Time since that worked out well for the last thread. I’ve prepared seven questions for the start of the thread, but will add more if needed. You can get a preview of upcoming questions below if you so choose. Question 1 will be formally announced shortly after we get settled in.

1: What are you most looking forward to and hoping for from Nintendo in 2024? (Thread launch through January 3rd)

2: What’s going on with Donkey Kong in 2024 and beyond? (January 4th – January 10th)

3: What four games would you like to see most in Year 1 for Switch 2 and why? You can pick either realistic or dream guesses. (January 11th – January 17th)

4: What other IP revival remakes like Another Code would you like to see and why? Can be first or third party. (January 18th – January 24th)

5: In celebration of Under Night In-Birth II and the Apollo Justice collection, what are your favorite fighting games and visual novel / story heavy games on Switch? What fighting game and visual novels / story heavy games would you like to see return with rereleases and new entries? (January 25th – January 31st)

6: What new content do you expect to see and what would you like to see from Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door? Are there any other upcoming remaster / remakes you hope will get some brand new content? (February 1st – February 7th)

7: What do you most want to see from this Nintendo Direct both realistic and otherwise and why? Also, what games will shadowdrop if any? (February 8th – February 14th)

Our first major thread event, The Great Direct Date Guess Event - Featuring Switch 2 has started! It's an event where you can win up to two badges for correctly predicting the air date of the next Direct and the announcement of Switch 2. More info can be found in this post and please note the registration window ends on December 31st at 11:59 PM Pacific Time. I'm tracking the predictions in the chart below here, so check it out!

I will also announce upfront The Last Call Summon The Direct Event where we share YouTube videos as we count down to an expected announcement is planned to return provided Nintendo doesn’t blindside us all, as that was a ton of fun last time. More details will be announced when it occurs.

That’s it for this OP then, so let’s bring the hype and enjoy speculating together!
i believe Nintendo will do a Nintendo Direct(general) in mid/late march, focusing on Switch software releasing up to june 2024, dating the Paper Mario the Thousand Years Door remake e Luigi Mansion Dark Moon remaster to april/june respectivaly, and in march Nintendo will tease/anounce it next hardware, with june been the blowout, tease the console in march and fully reveal it in june/july

Astral Chain 2 is totally going to happen, right? Because I need it.
Can’t believe Astral Chain was way back in 2019. Feels like something that should happen since Nintendo invested in the series. Seems like a decent candidate to appear in 2024.

I think we'll have a Switch focused Direct. In January or February, but it'll probably be the last one.

I expect to see :

  • Princess Peach: Showtime!
  • Luigi's Mansion 2 HD
  • Paper Mario TTYD

Also, Nintendo will finally unveil Fire Emblem 4 Remake. I'm sure at 99.99% ! :p

The question I'm asking myself : Metroid Prime 4 will be present? There's nothing to say it will be cross-gen. Although it's likely, there's a lot of uncertainty on this point. So I wouldn't be surprised to see this game in the next Direct.

Now I've only one hope : a new Donkey Kong.

It will most likely be a cross-gen game because the license needs the 140+ millions Switch. And also because Switch deserves a new game, Nintendo shouldn't settle for Tropical Freeze.
Metroid Prime 4 showing on the february Direct, will depend if the game is cross-gen(as many suspect) or a fully Switch exclusive, if MP4 is cross-gen, Nintendo might save the reveal of the game, on the console reveal, if Metroid Prime 4 is a fully Switch exclusive, Metroid Prime 4 might show on the february Direct as final anouncement of the Direct.

Yeah, it should be about time for it. Would make sense for it to target the successor as well.

With the thread starting to get settled in, I'm going to drop the first Weekly Question for the thread! This one will run through the end of the day on Wednesday January 3rd so you'll get a little extra time to answer it compared to future questions!

Week 1 - What are you most looking forward to and hoping for from Nintendo in 2024?

To not color answers too much, I'll ispoiler my own answer. I think for me of course the Switch 2 is on the forefront of my mind now. I really hope we get a great sense of what the first year will hold for the console as well as some long term teases (similar to the Switch 1 January reveal) not to mention having cool games at launch like a new 3D Mario. I'm also hoping the games and revivals for Switch 1 don't let up. We've had some really cool stuff come back recently like Advance Wars, Pikmin, and Mario RPG and I'm looking forward to trying out Another Code this year. I hope we get some more revivals like these (new games and remakes) in addition to the big pillar games. Finally, I definitely want to play Metroid Prime 4 this year!

The first thread event is currently planned to start roughly 12ish hours from now, so please look forward to it :)
i want to play Metroid Prime 4 and the next 3D Mario by tommorow.

Yeah, it should be about time for it. Would make sense for it to target the successor as well.
I hope we start hearing some updated rumblings soon on launch timing because the amount of games I’m penciling down for “this would make sense around the Switch 2 launch window” is getting quite large haha. An action game like Astral Chain would be a great fit for more powerful hardware, though Platinum does have a lot of Switch experience at this point where a Switch 1 release would be quite spectacular still I feel.

If Switch 2 does land closer to the holidays rather than the June - September window that has been kicked around a lot, I know I’d love to see Astral Chain 2 be one of the last big Switch titles.

Astral Chain 2 is a given for Switch 2 imo. Nintendo went out of their way to acquire it fully. They have Platinum working on it. There was something they really liked about the IP, which is good.

I had a post on this earlier today, but it does feel there are a lot more options possible for this Direct than usual.

We have three franchises we are most expecting to hear more about including Fire Emblem, Metroid, and Donkey Kong, but then there’s just a good deal of other options around that too like Yoshi, Tomodachi, Astral Chain, and Zelda. If we get a Switch 2 tease we could get small glimpses of launch games including the next 3D Mario, though it is a huge long shot.

We could just as easily get an average show as well, so hype reasonably, but even if Nintendo does keep their own cards close, I do think there’s a good chance for some solid 3rd party stuff to show up too. Stuff like Dragon Quest III HD-2D, Daemon X Machina 2, Rune Factory, Nier Replicant, and Xenosaga HD all seem varying degrees of plausible.

Oh dear, it’s going to look freaking GORGEOUS.

I’m not sure if we’ll get another Yoshi game. It seems like a one game per gen thing. What I really want is Good Feel to be working on a new Wario Land game. They did it before they can do it again.

Good-Feel are still in the running to be the Princess Peach developer, so we may not get another Yoshi title. A Woolly World port is still possible as far as I'm concerned.

If it’s a brand new Yoshi I don’t think it’ll be here as it seems like a perfect cross gen game since 2D platformers aren’t too demanding, but if it’s a Wooly World port I think it has a small, but still decent shot that will keep growing with each Direct this year.

Yeah I can see a port. I love Wooly World

I think we are near the end of the road on big / megaton Switch game announcements but that's influenced by my feelings that Switch 2 is launching in the summer and not in the holidays. So they'll want to get people excited about buying the next console with announcing games like 3D Mario or Mario Kart.

For Switch itself I think the current 2024 lineup is a good preview of the types of games we will get. I could see Grezzo, Camelot, and ND Cube each all having a final Switch game in them whether that's another remake or something smaller like another Mario sports title. Then Prime 4 and whatever Pokémon Gen 5 project would both be cross gen or playable via backwards compatibility anyway. (Metroid just to honor a commitment and Pokémon because $$$)

Donkey Kong continues to be the biggest wildcard to me when thinking about what will happen in 2024. I'm not really sure, just because it's been a decade and I don't trust NCL to know whats best for this IP. DK feels too big to make it a Switch exclusive with the console winding down, but also feels too small to make it a major launch year game compared to juggernauts like 3D Mario or Mario Kart. Honestly I have more faith we see an announcement of a Donkey Kong Country movie with Illumination next year rather than the next game just because this console transition is such a weird place to revive the IP in gaming.

any platnium game in the future going to feel very weird without kamiya tbh

Be it by death, retirement, or leaving of their own free will, eventually all the ongoing IP we love will lose their og creators. The hope is said creator cultivated a new generation to pick up the mantle.

Has a Direct Mini ever revealed the release date of a game that was teased in a General Direct?

If not, then I’m expecting next Direct to be s regular one because we don’t know TTYD’s release date

I mean to post yesterday, but I think most of the issues with Thracia 776 would be fixed by a modern remake.

1- Fog of war maps would have the modern system of letting you see the map, and not have the player fumbling through the darkness unsure where the objective is.

2- Fatigue will probably become both a difficulty/accessibility feature you can turn off like perma death, and have a clearer system for player to work around.

3- The modern time rewind will let people avoid losing their units "permanently" to being captured.

4- The game will have the standard FE difficulty options for people who want an easier experience.

5- You won't lose your whole army if Lief flees first, or the game will warn you of the consequences if you try

6- Ambush spawns will be limited to the hardest difficulty

Lots of little tweaks like that would help make Thracia 776 accessible to modern audiences while still keeping it's unique mechanics.

Has a Direct Mini ever revealed the release date of a game that was teased in a General Direct?

If not, then I’m expecting next Direct to be s regular one because we don’t know TTYD’s release date
I recall the mini direct at the start of Covid in 2020 revealed the release date for Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, which was originally announced to exist in the 2019 September direct.

Good-Feel are still in the running to be the Princess Peach developer, so we may not get another Yoshi title. A Woolly World port is still possible as far as I'm concerned.

Yea, 2D Yoshi is definitely a one new game per generation franchise.

A Woolly World port isn't out of the question at some point though.

My guess for the new console release date is no sooner than September 2024. I think a late October release is most likely because that gives them space for holiday sales.

I sometimes have to double check if I'm in the Switch 2 speculation thread or the Direct speculation thread. Someone make the illusion of choice meme.
