Should we continue adding DLC to the Expansion Pack for future games? (Splatoon 3?)
This would be a brilliant strategy. Splatoon 3 players will almost universally have a base subscription, so the offer of an eventual (or perhaps even immediate) campaign with the expansion would be very compelling. I'll now be surprised if this doesn't happen.

I think subscription services will be the future of indie games. You would be surprised how many people discover indie games because they found them on GamePass. Years ago, it was easier for an indie game like Mutant Mudds to find an audience. But today, most indie games fail to get noticed. There's too many indie games releasing each week, the market has become way too competitive.

I'll leave everything else out of this post because I fully believe that's spot on. This part however I am not sure.

While there's definitely some cool indie stuff going on on gamepass - It's still the AAA games that's showcased and that will push consumers towards the service and that's going to eat up a lot of the players time. And there's just too many indie games releasing to discover them all, and gamepass certainly (or any other service for that matter) will only cover a very very very small portion of stuff availible which ofc will get a huge boost from it.

There's just too many studios developing games to be able to fit in and thrive on current services. Some will, most wont.

I still feel the best way for indies to pick up steam is via WoM, picked up by a popular streamer or getting promotion via Nindie showcases over gamepass feature.

I have however thought for a while that a Indie-world subscription service sort of thing where games featured inthe showcase would actually be on the service could be a huge thing. Nintendo has really been pushing indies the entire generation and it's been a massive success. A service with this, could be something really awesome and cool. I want this more than a "nintendo gamepass" for first party games.

honestly if all nintendo first party dlc on the nso pack becomes a relatively realistic thing, i'll be all aboard. i get them anyway, and some are great and some are not as great, will be nice to just be able to check back in without as big of a commitment while also getting more virtual console esque titles.

When Mario Golf ended its free dlc run last month, so much earlier than Tennis ended its free dlc run, it made me think maybe Nintendo doesn't want "Free" and "DLC" next to one another for any of their games going forward unless they are paired with the words "with NSO Subscription"

lemme hit you with the raw beef tho fam:

what if the Splatoon 3 DLC

was ONLY available through the Expansion Pack

what do people generally prefer? the splatoon 2/arms/mario tennis style free updates but original release is kind of light?

animal crossing, which was kind of a hybrid between doing THAT and also adding paid dlc?

or like botw, three houses, mua3, age of calamity, etc where the games seemed very feature complete at release but only had paid dlc?

Nintendo's DLC has been getting better over time, but I think Animal Crossing DLC, and Smash Ultmate's DLC was really good.

I would say BOTW style for majority of games.

But games like Splatoon / Mario Kart, if new levels/features added over time I'd keep playing for longer.

Could also say this split is single player versus multi player games but I'm sure there would be some eventual cross over

Mario party dlc being in the expansion pack would be cool.
A lot of people probably play that online so might make them upgrade

so whats everyone playing over holiday break?
I'll likely still be getting through Shin Megami Tensei V and Halo Infinite. I've got The Last Campfire and Psychonauts 2 as well, and supposedly No More Heroes 3 Collector's Edition should still arrive this year from Pix n Love...

It depends very much on the game.

For "finite" games, like Zelda, the full campaign should be there day 1. A game with a finite adventure shouldn't be dragged out, whether paid or unpaid. A DLC can add supplementary stuff, but that should only feel additional; something to take the game from 100% to 110%. It's like the appendices at the back of the Lord of the Rings. Nice additional stuff for those who want a little more, but those who only play the base game don't feel like they've played an incomplete game. I feel the BOTW DLC hit this for the most part but I also don't care if BOTW2 doesn't get any DLC and we have to suffer "only" the 200 hours worth of material we smash out at launch.

For longer terms games like sports games or lifestyle games, post-launch content can work well. I actually like that Animal Crossing didn't have everything to burn through day 1. In fact, I'd rather the 2.0 update had been more spread out. For something like Mario Golf, look at this way: would you rather they delayed the release to November when everything was there or would you accept enjoying the bulk of the game earlier with the rest coming later to continually spice it up?

That's for free updates of course. If it's paid DLC, it is problematic if it feels like it is content that is being held back deliberately just to extract more money from punters. Paid DLC should feel like something obviously connected but also somehow detached from the base game. Happy Home Paradise is a good example. It's like a different game (because it is) so it being a paid expansion seems fair (though no-one would complain if it was free of course but that applies to everything).

I have a list!

  • Finish Metroid Dread
  • Famicom Detective Club
  • Shin Megami Tensei V
  • Finish Ocarina of Time Fogless edition
  • Probably play halo
  • Maybe go back to Forza?
  • Oops animal crossing everyday!!!
  • I want to 100% Lost Judgment (please pray 4 me)
  • Uhh Yakuza 3 (it’s the one my girlfriend hasn’t seen yet) (gonna okay that one on easy because we’re just there for the story lol)
This is like… on top of my existing backlog lol

I think Nintendo would get shit for that. If it seems like the only reason is to get people to sub to a service they wouldn't otherwise want, it would be viewed as rent seeking (not exactly of course but in the spirit of). The option for access included with EP is set as an alternative to buying it outright separately is set. It's a decent concept. I hope Nintendo don't nerf it.

Octo Expansion was pretty solid too.

I could also see them rotating the included DLC annually.
The problem is what happens to those who still want to use the DLC.

The one thing Nintendo should probably get more credit for with NSO is that the games added to classic services are permanent. No FOMO there. (So far)

@Derachi hahahaha bread anime has a pastiche of Truth by T-Square when it mentions F1 racing (timestamped)

edit: I can't get the timestamp to work all. it's 12:24

Seconded.

A friend of mine got me a code for Borderlands 3 so I'm expanding my gaming horizons.

Thanks to @CyberWolfJV for the heads up about this, and also the pictures!

The CD generation feature in the upcoming Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX is reworked to no longer require physical CDs (naturally, can't exactly insert a disk into your Switch after all), and instead connects to a large database of not just music CDs, but also games. PlayStation and Sega Saturn games are included (as they would've been usable with the original release), but Switch titles are as well. The interesting thing there is that it includes multiple games that haven't released yet; Advance Wars 1+2, Bayonetta 3, Kirby and the Forgotten Land; but also the barely announced Detective Pikachu project, which the game calls 'Untitled Detective Pikachu sequel".

The initial reveal was unclear on what exactly the title is, but here at least the game is being deemed a sequel. The list also includes the still unlocalised Buddy Mission BOND; which, you know, I hope Nintendo get around to releasing in English sometime.

Hell yeah!! I probably have already mentioned this but Yakuza 0 uses a Truth pastiche for the slot car racing mini game.

I don't even know where to begin.

Nintendo looks at your NSO data and asks questions like:
  • Do NSO members spend more time/money playing multiplayer or single player games?
    • Based on this data, should we greenlight more multiplayer or single player games?
  • What games increased subscriptions for NSO? Which games did not and why?
    • "Why did we see an uptick in new NSO subscribers from Monster Hunter?"
  • What % of NSO members downloaded the NES/SNES/N64/Genesis apps. (30%? 45%? 55%?)
    • What is the average time that NSO members spent in these retro gaming apps?
    • Which retro games are they playing in these apps?
  • What % of NSO members downloaded "Happy Home Paradise?"
    • What impact does DLC have on subscription numbers?
    • Should we continue adding DLC to the Expansion Pack for future games? (Splatoon 3?)
Nintendo has had games that were commercially successful, but they didn't move the needle on subscriptions.
Your point about Splatoon 3 has spawned a new fear in me. What if Nintendo starts putting what was previously free content behind the more expensive NSO tier?

tracking gametime in retro games? wow interesting

btw if you have the expansion pass pls try phantasy star iv

I don't know what kind of impact it'll have but

pls

I'm wondering this too. Maybe the Splatoon 3 campaign will be day one DLC. Probably not, but with the Expansion Pack it very well could happen.

Would be a marketing mess since they already started promoting the campaign as part of the game in the previous direct. Would also just be a shitty move in general so i'm glad it has no chance of happening, lol.

I don't expect anything different from Splatoon 3 in regards to post-launch support. If there's a Octo Expansion-equivalent expansion in 2023 perhaps that would be part of the Expansion Pack down the road.

oh fair point

if there's DLC I'm sure it'd be part of it though

So I managed to do the impossible and saw AND played a Switch OLED at my local GameStop Canada. Holy FUCK does Super Mario Odyssey shine on this thing! I assume it's in the default vivid mode, but seriously you NEED to see the colors explode in the town area of the Sand Kingdom/Tostarena.

They also had a playable Switch Lite next to it so naturally I matched the location, and sure enough the difference is crazy! Man, crazy if Switch launched with this OLED screen to begin with. Not possible with the pricing and such, I know, but wowzers.

Should add that Prime 4 and Breath of the Wild 2 also show up in the search; My guess it's that this list is somewhat tied to eShop data, so those games probably have pages in the server but they're not up for public view yet!

And pretty much every game I could look for I found; Even smaller titles like the Astérix games by Microids I bothered to check lol

Making a live mashup right now of michael jackson and carly rae jepsen. Like.... carly rae jackson.

If anybody's interested in hearing it i'm doing a livestream

People can just buy the DLC. They made a big point with the AC DLC of what still works if your subscription lapses prior to the release.

Geoff, from The Keighleys fame, talked a bit more in his Reddit AMA about the Keighleys and I lost some quick time compiling interesting stuff for those who are interested:
"The 4-5 Elden Ring type premieres comment....everyone will have their own interpretation of that. Elden Ring was an announced game already that we showed first gameplay on. It wasn't a brand new reveal. We have a LOT of new game announcements tomorrow (I think more than 10), and some are really big/triple A level stuff. We also have a lot of good gameplay reveals too, some extended premieres. One is over 6 minutes long.

Will it live up to your expectations? I'm not sure. That ER comment was more that we have a lot of variety in the show and I think 4-5 really big/meaningful announcements/first looks etc.

I'm sure you won't get everything you want though! That's just how life goes lol"

"He's never too far from my shows!"

"We might have something Kpop related tomorrow night for you :)"

"Yeah I think we're showing something more on that tomorrow night!"

"I do!"

"Yep we're thinking a lot about this and how we could do some good. I've thought about doing some kind of award/recognition for this, the real question is how do you evaluate this? Do you survey employees? Have an independent group explore it? We could totally do a "Best Workplace" Award potentially, I'd just want to figure out a really fair and good way to judge that. Open to ideas, but love the sentiment."

"There are a few games in the show this year that are the result of 2019 conversations. (A lot of stuff was delayed last year). Most of our deals happen in the summer after the SGF timeframe."

"That's a great question! I'm not sure. I guess getting the Breath of the Wild gameplay for the first show in 2014 will always have a special place in my heart."

"People are certainly free to say what they want at the show. I'm trying to figure out the best way to address what's going on generally, and I certainly don't want to ignore it. But we're also a show about celebrating games and the industry, so it's a delicate balance. Hopefully it's ok to say I'm still figuring it out and trying to be thoughtful about it?

We have I think 3 or 4 movie/tv related things -- The Sonic movie, The Halo series, The Matrix are big ones. It's kind of cool how the movie/game/streaming worlds are all coming together."

"I think there's a general misunderstanding of the advisory board on the show. They have ZERO power related to the show. They are advisors, they aren't a board of directors, I don't answer to them. I own The Game Awards 100%.

Of course they are all big/important players in gaming so we care what they think, but it's not like the advisory board approves my scripts or decides on show content.

We started that board back in 2014, and the basic point was to get all the platforms and all the major publishers to back Game Awards as an official thing. It was needed when I was starting on my own, and it was important to have full industry support behind TGA.

Moving forward I'm definitely thinking about how to evolve our plans -- and new voices to add into the mix too. Today a lot of developer-publishers are making huge waves on their own and don't need to go through a publisher to reach the audience."

"Rest easy"

edit: yeah he ain't gonna call acti out like he did konami

I made this with some synths and my launchpad. and a fuckton of plugins assigned to the knobs and sliders on my midi drum controller.

This is what I've been doing the past two nights...

I really do think Geoff has gotten a bad rap here. In my opinion all of his statements on the Activision situation have been very appropriate.

So my wife got her Pfizer booster like a month ago and we all just got over a cold, but she's now saying she feels like her tongue and throat are stinging like they would be after burning them with hot food and even though her sense of taste is perfectly fine she's worried that this somehow means she has COVID. We also love in an area with a pretty low case rate, even now.

Should I/she be worried? She'll probably get tested in the morning.

I’m not a doctor, but no! Worrying never helped anything and it’s definitely not gonna start now!
