Again, I miss the days where the only streaming services were Netflix and Amazon Prime.
I agree, with the addition of Hulu. I kinda felt like Netflix was for movies, Hulu was for series, both had an impressive backlog of stuff, things that would've otherwise been lost to history, and then Amazon was for the weird, risky, offbeat stuff. And it worked. I very much liked it.

Then Netflix went all-in on original series. Weird, series were Hulu's domain. Then Hulu started doing original movies. Huh, weird again. Fast forward a few years and no single service has a niche, every one is a flood of all types of content, and most of the new services are only drawing users by pulling content off of other services and putting it exclusively on their own. And it's an absolute bullshit mess. No single service has a discernable personality compared to the other anymore.

Like, there's a new movie with Chris Evans and Ana de Armas, ffs! I should be all over that! But guess what, it's on a service I don't have. And I already subscribe to goddamn four. I just can't. It's so dumb. It's not viable. Fuck it. Terrible system, terrible trend. It was better the way it began.

Nintendo is gonna absolutely DOMINATE the entertainment industry in April/May. The Mario Movie and TOTK. Jesus, no wonder why they didn't feel the need for a June game. This might be the strongest non-holiday quarter Nintendo has ever had.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of Every Other Entertainment Company This Summer

I tell ya, having 13 total moderators on staff feels so good, holy moly. Before, we were definitely stretched thin at times, but these new champs are already killing it! 🥳

Disney went all in on streaming at the expense of external licensing and box office under Iger's leadership, now he's coming back to fix the mess he made...
It’s like a grand conspiracy. Lay the ground work for all the screw ups, let a new guy take over and get saddled with a lot of that stuff to the point of being hated by everyone (lots self made to be fair), and ride in like the white knight to save the company again by undoing all the stuff you did. Genius in a way

Another Friday, another Top 6 list I want to see from you! For the second week of questions I have to ask: What were your top 6 remasters/remakes/upgraded ports of games you enjoyed on Switch? Whether it was your first time or sixth time playing these games, what have been your favourite experiences to revisit specifically on the Switch? But like before, don't just make it a list; at least write a sentence or three about why they were so impactful to you!

I'll present my list (unranked):

Pikmin 3 Deluxe
While I was admittedly hesitant at first to pick this up again (specifically because I remembered the first time I played it on Wii U it was so short), as soon as I started a new save file I was reminded so quickly why I've come to love the series. So much comes together in a perfect little package; charming music, lush greenery and environments, adorable characters and enemies, and a brain teasing challenge. Additionally, the difficulty to reduce the number of Pikmin allowed in the field at once while also offering prologue and epilogue missions for Olimar and Louie have just made it worthwhile, and I was happy to do my part to ensure there was sufficient interest shown for Pikmin 4.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
I was sold alone on the promise of a proper Battle Mode, but BOOSTER COURSE PACK solidified this decision to pick the game up.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
It's really so pretty, and though I enjoyed the game on Wii (while not quite finishing it), I can still appreciate the finer details in improving the character models, as well as the bonus story chapter. One day I'll actually get around to pulling my XC2 game out of the CE box 🙃

Portal Collection
I beat the first game on PC, and the second on 360. This came at a perfect time when I was considering going through both again, and wow these puzzles still hold up to this day. You'll scratch your head, aching on how to solve a challenge, but when it all clicks, you feel like the smartest person in the room. I even felt inclined to go back and finish all the challenge rooms like I hadn't before, and the options for Portal 2's multiplayer whether splitscreen, local wireless or online are all fantastic playstyles and do not skimp on options.

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit
Playing this game again is like a time capsule for 2010. The only drawbacks I've had are load times, but the music from 30 Seconds to Mars before Leto became a meme, the righteous DnB of Pendulum's "Watercolour" to get you hyped while driving along the coastline highway at night in the rain, and just the aesthetic of cars from 2010 are cool as hell (and I love making them ugly as sin by picking custom colours and make them as bright neon highliter pink as possible 😋)

Super Monkey Ball
I dunno what it is about this game, it's just fun. I also appreciate that no matter how challenging it gets, the game does offer an easy mode and slow down mode. While it's a shame it doesn't offer online, the multiplayer for 1-4 players is still as fun as it ever was back on the Gamecube when I could only ever rent those games

The only reason Metroid Prime Remastered (and Skyward Sword HD, and Link's Awakening DX) aren't on my list is because I haven't got them yet, but I do hope to fix that in the future! There are a number of other games I'd like to consider like Darksiders, The Witcher 3, L.A. Noire, DOOM, and Alan Wake, but they're all in my backlog and I've yet to give them a go (or at least finish them proper) 😋
So I'm gonna rank mine because I think I've only actually played six. 😅

6. Final Fantasy VIII Remastered - Still my favorite of the PS1 FFs, I appreciate that they upgraded some of the character models while keeping the feel of the era. I still enjoyed it even after all these years, even after I realized just how broken the Junction system is, even after I realized Rinoa is way too happy for the situation she's in. It's classic Final Fantasy to me.

5. Sonic Origins - I'm really happy Sega finally did what had to be done to get the whole Genesis quadrilogy on modern systems. I'm just sorry they had to lose the Ice Cap music to do it (Launch Base and Carnival Night can go but Ice Cap... Ice Cap, yall (and ironically it's the one song that wasn't from Jackson but the rights for it got goofy anyway)). I love that they put in the effort to bring Sonic 3&K up to the standard of the great Christian Whitehead "Taxman" ports of the others, and the overall visual presentation of the menu systems and such is really neat. The only complaint I continue to have is that the Story Mode is awkwardly hidden deep in the menu, to a point that I didn't even realize it was there until I was done with 1, partway through 2, and said "wait, wasn't there supposed to be a single unified story mode with cutscenes??" and then went looking for it. Odd choice. But an otherwise neat package of a significant series!

4. Katamari Damacy Reroll -
naaaaaa nanananana na na na katamari damashii~
nanaaaa nanananana na na na katamari damashii~
NANAAAA NANANANANA NA NA NA KATAMARI DAMASHII~
nanaaaa nanananana na na na katamari damashiiiiiiii~

3. Chrono Cross- Radical Dreamers Edition - This was originally lower on the list because I was irritated that they put such little effort into the port and package, but then I remembered how much better it looked and felt after the patch and I bumped it up. And then I remembered they finally brought Radical Dreamers to the west with this and I bumped it up again. Then I remembered I'm trying to count not just the technical sides of these ports but the games themselves as well and I bumped it up yet again. I'm still not 100% sure I understand the story.

2. Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - My very first Zelda. One of my favorite Zeldas. And they made it even cuter. I love it so much. I've probably recommended this game to people more than Breath of the Wild.

1. Xenoblade Definitive Edition - I've been, I think pretty thorough at times about describing what a big deal the first Xenoblade was to me. I was actually starting to consider replaying the Wii original when DE was revealed in that Direct, and I nearly cried. I almost didn't even believe what I was looking at while watching it. And they somehow managed to upgrade only the things that bugged me about the original: the faces, the hands, the lighting, the UI, while keeping the same overall game that I loved. It's like Monolith decided to make a remaster just for me. It feels like it could be a new game but somehow it didn't lose the feel and the soul of the original in getting to that point. And what a soul it has.

Spent my evening making this, thoughts?

It's a rough mix, still arranging it but this is where I'm leaving it for tonight. Still need to work on those transitions.

I think the main beat is FIRE though if I say so myself

To be fair, Chapek was hated even before he was CEO, he did a pretty terrible job at the head of Parks and Resorts Parks, Experiences and Products (budget cuts everywhere), and it was mainly his handling of parks as CEO that was criticized, with the same budget cuts, but now with price increases and nickel and diming everyone. Some of his issues were inherited from Iger, like the shift to streaming or Genie+, but most of it he did on himself.

I wish I had better words, but I'm loving this so far. The nature sounds with the tropical house beats and the vocals, so good 👌

Top 6 portmaster remakeleases on Switch:

1) Zelda: Link's Awakening
2) Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
3) Metroid Prime Remastered
4) Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
5) Final Fantasy XII: Zodiac Age
6) Famicom Detective Club

Where DQX Offline

Has the DLC with version 2 already released in Japan? It had been delayed, but I can't find online if it's out already.

I think the game has a good chance of being localized after it's done getting updates in Japan, but the DQ has been radio silent about the franchise in general for a while. We still haven't heard anything about DQ3 after that teaser 2 years ago.

To make this a bit more difficult for myself I left out first-party releases like Pikmin 3 Deluxe, Super Mario 3D World and Metroid Prime Remastered...

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
I think for a lot of FFXII fans like myself this was a really bittersweet release. For the longest time I was dying to play the International Zodiac Job System version. TZA finally made that possible and added some new features. It's a great conversion that looks beautiful even on Switch. At the same time, I'm probably never going to get over the fact that no version of the game will ever match what Matsuno set out to do with the game due to his untimely departure. Still, what was a flawed masterpiece was turned into a top 3 Final Fantasy for me. Still need to replay it.

No More Heroes
It's an extremely simple "remaster" that only bumps the resolution and framerate plus adds gamepad controls but sometimes that is enough. The original was one of my favourite games on the Wii but was sadly held back by its technical shortcomings and availability. This release fixes those things while leaving the underlying game intact unlike the weird X360 and PS3 versions that change the graphical style and add a lot of superfluous stuff.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
Full disclaimer, I've finished the first one, which I already played on my brother's Android device, and only started the second part. Which means I'm still in that "shit is about to hit the fan" phase of the duology. But it's already such a fantastic and confident return to form after the somewhat middling Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice. I love the characters, their relationships, the entire vibe and how it takes its time to build its story.

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
Nigthdive are just really good at what they do. Unlike the NMH port, this one actually has a host of improvements and additions both in terms of graphics as well as gameplay. Playing Turok 2 on an N64 can be a rather unpleasant experience due to the abysmal performance, cleaned up and improved it almost feels like a really good retro throwback.

Ōkami HD
Ōkami was always a game that I wanted to like more than I did. I enjoyed it on PS2 and Wii and even when I dabbled in the HD remaster on PS3. But it wasn't until I played it on Switch, where I could occasionally switch to touch controls, that I learned to really appreciate it. I still have my issues with it: It feels overly long at times and I wish there were no combat arenas, for example. I also think it's a shame that they haven't managed to replicate the paper effect to make it look like on the PS2. But still, I can really recommend it.

Shin Megami Tensei III
Look, I'm not gonna lie, I wish this was a slightly better remaster. The art style holds up incredibly well, manual skill inheritance is a nice addition and I was pleasantly surprised by the voice acting. There are several QoL changes, however, that could have improved it even further, like a mini-map or fast forward in battles. The main sticking point, however, is that we still have to listen to the compressed soundtrack. Which is a shame because it's some of Meguro's best work. But underneath all that it's still the fantastic game it's always been.

No order and right off the top of my head:

(1) Valkyria Chronicles.
I actually had this purchased on Steam for years. Played it once, didn't understand it and abandoned it (for shame). Saw it on sale years later on Switch and the art style drew me back in again, watched a few reviews, and resolved to give it a proper go. Got hooked almost instantly this time, and absolutely adored the game. Great mash-up of real-time and turn-baaed strategy, characters you grow to care about, real challenge... A stone-cold classic and one of my favourite Switch games.

(2) Cheating a little but... SMA4: Super Mario Bros. 3 on NSO.
World-e. 'Nuff said.

(3) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Especially now the expansion pack keeps adding in more and more courses. Never gets stale.

(4) Castlevania Advance Collection.
3 great games with little mod-cons that alleviate some of the frustration with the originals. Please Konami release a DS collection. 🙏

(5) Final Fantasy VII.
It's the best mainline Final Fantasy, and it's on Switch. You can speed up battles. You can still dress up Cloud and make him look cute. 👗
My only wish is that the font wasn't so heavily filtered but you get used to it.

(6) Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap.
Switch between old graphics and new is very fun. Incredible to think that the game is essentially 8-bit but with a beautiful overlay.

Some honourable mentions (don't want to list some as I haven't completed all of them yet):

  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy (I've done the first game and I love the new HD artwork).
  • BioShock Remastered (it's easy to forget this game released in 2007; shame no gryro).
  • Dragon Quest XI (I won't give it its full title 😅).
  • Xenoblade Chronicles (my partner loved this and the extra epilogue).
  • Resident Evil Revelations (great controller options; shame about the long loading times)

Dragon Quest XIS is definitely a good pick here for Switch as you can swap to the 2D/3DS style at any point- it’s pretty much the definitive version of the game. Same goes for Mario Kart 8D.

I have the urge to replay Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn

Wish I could play them on switch tho, my Wii is in storage and I’m too lazy to go that far to replay them 🫠

I recently saw some gameplay again from the games and was surprised how slow they felt actually. I am actually thinking of getting my Gamecube again and get a HDMI converter for it to play Tales of Symphonia (the proper way).

Anyone else cross dominant? I just took this test and got a score of 0.

My results

Hadn't really thought about it before but I'm definitely more cross dominant than I realised.

Jeez, I do love PC gaming but hate it at the same time. I've spent more time tinkering with settings today than actually playing any game. The freedom you get with game settings is fantastic, yet it becomes clearer every day that I'm too much of a tinkerer to really be able to handle this freedom and still get the most out of the games themselves. Annoying.

You ever feel too dumb to play a Zelda game? I just got there with this puzzle from Twilight Princess:

Zelda-Twilight-Princess-HD-Walkthrough-Sacred-Grove-Statue-Puzzle.jpg
I love this puzzle, but also always seem to get stuck on it and feel dumb, too. Which honestly is how I like my puzzles, so I'm okay with it!

Weirdly massive guilty pleasure - Sam Hunt. I don't like country music but find myself listening to a lot of his songs, lol.

Dunno if this means anything but there was just one Mario Day Switch "Choose One" bundle left at my local Target this morning.

Also most Mario games were sold out.

My brother can relate to this. About half of the hours he puts into a game is him messing with the settings lol
