StarTopic Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet |ST| Who You Callin' Paldea, Friend?

Going in completely blind, hoping for some nice surprises :)

Will probably play mostly portable at first if docked is complicated.

Did you speed run the whole game or something? I'm 6 hours in and only have done first gym and first titan. And I'm kinda rushing it.

Finishing the game plus the post game in 23 hours sounds impossible.
I did all ingame PVE content minus the dex in about 30 with like 5 hours of messing around, definitely possible but you'd have to rush a little. Pretty sure I could do it in 10 hours or less on a replay but that's unfair lol.

Ultimately Pokemon completion times are kind of useless because it entirely depends on how much time you spend on filling the dex, everyone's goes about that at a different pace.

Honestly, I spent a bit of that time just roaming around the map to explore. Traversal also gets MUCH quicker once you get new abilities. You can catch some high-level mon and just power through the final half of the game…I found a lv60 in the wild, gave it XP candies, and used that to decimate the E4. I barely changed my team out, but when I did replace Pokémon, they tended to be 10+ levels higher. I also skipped all trainers after about level 20 (they just felt pointless), so mileage will definitely vary.

So you DID rush it. Interesting.

I also caught some higher level pokémon, Hariyama and Golduck but obviously, lacking proper badges, they're disobeying me. Gym's are also pretty difficult this time around. Right now I'm at Brassius's gym, my overleveled (24) Sprigatito evo failed on the first try. Sudowoodo is tough.

Do you ever feel like GameFreak is incompetent, and Pokemon succeeded IN SPITE of them, not BECAUSE of them?
No. Pokemon’s core design ethos of accessibility, social functionality, and creative creature design is what it is largely because of the devs at Gamefreak. Many other devs have tried to follow their general model to varying degrees of success (looking at you, Level 5), but Gamefreak and TPC have masterfully kept Pokémon popular for 25+ years at this point - not an easy task!

Gamefreak is obviously technically lackluster (plus constantly rushed to push out games), but trying to take credit away from them for making Pokémon what it is isn’t fair.

Can I ask everyone to use spoilers if you're going to post pictures of new Pokémon?

My game isn't arriving for a while, but I'd like to followed discussion here and not be spoiled if possible :)

theres people who think the gameplay and design of pokemon just fell from the heavens, untouched by human hands into bumbling lazy gamefreak's lap. it is what it is but it really tells you how they view video game development.

I don’t normally care about performance but this feels like some really bad frame pacing or something. Every few seconds it just chugs and is really annoying.

Yeah, not only I'm not using pics, but I avoid using their names. Like "Pawmi evo".

I don't think I can agree. Pokemon would not be what it is without GameFreak. For all the missteps they may have made since its original inception, the core attraction of the franchise is very, very strong. I can see what you might mean in terms of the... peculiar changes they've made over the years that can feel like major downgrades, and I can agree that some of these changes may not have been as readily glossed over if not for the core appeal of the franchise. But GameFreak is what made that core appeal so strong, as well as most of the positive steps in the franchise, even if they take a lot of negative ones as well.

Nah, no way. They design the Pokemon themselves, and in that department they are nearly unmatched by any other dev in the industry.

Despite the technical problems with their games, they’ve done a bang up job of managing the IP.

My copy just arrived! I'm excited to hop in, and now seeing some clips on Twitter I want to see some funny glitches too. Get the Skyrim experience again

Edit: the tips about using handheld mode are true in my experience; it also smoothes out some of the textures that look ugly on big televisions.

Happy Pokemon day everyone!

I’ve only gotten an hour in, but I’m already itching to play more. Still too many cutscenes at the beginning but there’s a little stretch that lets you taste how the open-world gameplay is like and I love it already. Commanding my Fuecoco to destroy the EXP fodder was seamless.

Lol I already found a shiny Hoppip, not even in Mesagoza yet. It's a shame they don't make an overworld noise like PLA, I bet many of us will miss shinies because of that.

I am... Extremely disappointed that the option to change to set battling has been removed.

I haven't been this bummed since exp share became permanent.

Not to be overly cynical but this feels like another case where they thought "ah, most people don't do this anyway" and took the option away cause they figured we could just live with it and not select switch. I know it's ultimately a minor thing but it feels like more aggressively scaling down of difficulty for seemingly no reason.

Oh well.

My copy arrives tomorrow 😅 from what I have heard, the gameplay is great, but the framerate is horrible. How is everyone feeling about the performance? Worse than Arceus?

I played an hour before bed when it unlocked at midnight. The framerate is weirdly uneven which can give the game a bit of a stuttery feel at times. I'm sensitive enough that I can notice it, but not enough that I find it offputting.

Guess what is at home? Yeah, right.

Guess who isn't at home and at work? Yeah .... ;_;

Given our younger ones get the double pack for christmas, i had to panicly text the Mrs. to not open the package when they can see it.
Let's see if i can start playing tonight.

Been playing for a couple of hours now. So far it's not as fresh, polished or fun as Arceus which I was already expecting going in, but it's still pretty okay.

Update:

The Mrs. was able to open the package without anyone noticing, and it's only the double pack.

My seperate Scarlet order, which also had a nice discount down to 47€ thanks to a coupon, is missing.
And Amazon now says it's "lost", as it should've been a seperate package and wasn't within the cardbox where the double pack was in.

Super.fucking.great.

The one time they ship something with DHL, and these useless DHL fuckers directly lose one of my packages.

Now i gotta drive to the next bigger city with a Media Markt, and gotta get it there in person. Which not only wastes fuel, not it's of course also 10 bucks more expensive.

I've only played a tiny bit so far, it definitely feels it runs smoother in handheld compared to docked.
I could almost swear I saw the character T Pose for a mili second in the first cutscene. XD

I think the most of the hiccups and stuttering etc could be patched out later tho.

The only thing I'm kinda sad about it the lack of variety in skin tone. I feel like my character looks too light compared to me, but if I went with the darkest option that wouldn't have fit either. 🥲

Other than that, I have finally met Spriggy and named mine Mimi because.. Mimi sounds cute and Spriggy is cute tyvm 😚

My review of Pokémon Scarlet so far :

If it were that easy, others would have superceeded them.

Just ask Level-5 how easy it is to build a multimedia brand and not sink the ship, even with a shocking level of initial success.

Played the first 30 minutes and so far I am less bothered by the technical issues then I would have thought but boy oh boy... Are there a lot. Bracing before impact did a lot I suppose 😌

Well, the good news is I found the Pokémon League. The bad news is that I don't think Fuecoco is going to be able to beat this Cabbie's Krookodile any time soon. At least we can run from Trainers now.

After one hour I must say I'm slightly disappointed. Performance is even in handheld an issue (but not unplayable) and the visuals in general feel very fuzzy. It's sad because the game itself shows a lot of potential.

Knowing myself im sure I will soon forget about all the visual issues and just enjoy my playtime. But it's the first time ever in a pokemon game for me that the technical side really hurts my experience. I didn't mind arceus or the open world areas in sword and shield.

I just pressed B every time it asked me to swap Pokemon, an annoyance but at least that textbox goes by quick.

Throwing a Pokeball to stun a wild Pokemon (or reach one in a tree/in water/etc) seems kinda imprecise. Step down from PLA's targeting reticle.

Also oof, turning my camera and seeing shadows disappear and reappear is a bit distracting. The camera clipping through the ground after battles also looks really sloppy.

Definitely having fun but really hoping against hope for some sort of patch for these issues.

Gotta say, despite all the performance issues, Game Freak really stepped up their animation game with this one, especially regarding the human characters! The cutscenes feel more modern, and there's little touches here and there, like the "climbing stairs" animation, that are really nice to see

The throwing the PokeBall seems to slightly snap to a target, which probably doesn't help with it feeling precise.

I think there are 30 different food shops in Mesagoza lol.

They must do fantastic business to justify an entire storefront that only sells socks lmao.
