StarTopic Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet |ST| Who You Callin' Paldea, Friend?

Btw. I've read on the soon to be dead Twitter that some of the technical glitches and error are due to a memory leak, which i've speculated about yesterday.

Does anyone know if there's more info to that? That would definitely be an issue that has to be patched.

I think there are 30 different food shops in Mesagoza lol.

They must do fantastic business to justify an entire storefront that only sells socks lmao.

Are they really different, or all the same like that screenshot from yesterday where you can see 3 identical shops next to each other? ;D

I just got to Mesagoza and yeah, the sheer number of hyper specific shops is amusing.

I entered two coffee shops in the city and they had the same menu. I guess it’s mostly for convenience so you don’t have to trek to the opposite side of the city to get a cuppa joe.

On the technical side, oh yeah, there is a lot of framerate drops, stuttering, etc. but there’s a lot more animations now for both humans and Pokemon, which is nice.

Enjoying this a lot more than PLA currently. Ok talk to you guys later haha

I didn't check them all but the ones I did were different, all had different food options and cuisines.

The Simpsons predicted it.

There is an entire street in my town where all the stores specialize in selling blender containers, so that doesn't sound too bad lol

That sounds oddly specific. Is it due to a local company/factory/industry?

I've tried to figure it out my whole life and never could lol Whenever someone needs a new blender container, they go there, so I guess it works. It also has other parts for kitchen stuff, but it's mainly blender containers haha

Got time to play some more, I am actually really, really in love with the game so far. By my books it's eons better than Sword/Shield so far. Wow, thought I would be dissapointed with it when I read some initial experiences but no.

I just pressed B every time it asked me to swap Pokemon, an annoyance but at least that textbox goes by quick.
Yeah like, functionally you can still keep set battling style but it still bothers me that something I liked to add a little tension has been removed for seemingly no reason. I've been using the set battling option for over a decade and it really bothers me that it's gone all of a sudden

Question, can I trade between games if I have 2 switches and 1 copy of Scarlet?
I have it digital. I tried it in BDSP but didn't work, but maybe I was doing it wrong.

You can but you specifically have to do it online, if you're using the same digital copy on two different switches, local multiplayer on the same license is disabled. (This is generally true across all games, not just Pokémon).

This also means you specifically have to not be using the same Nintendo account on the different switches.

May need to look up a license sharing guide if you don't already know how to wangle this

One coldass trip to target later, they were already out of stock of the dual pack :(

But… they still gave me a figure for my kindness and patience! Best of both worlds now - I grabbed my friend a single copy (preferred physical) and am downloading for myself.

The figure is perfect as well :)

Just did my first gym battle. Katy had a cool design, and a bug-type gym leader who bakes (because bugs stereotypically like sugar) is inspired. The gym battle music SLAPS, too. The little victory photo you get is pretty fun too.

In general, the aesthetic is damn fantastic. The towns are soaked to the bones in Spanish culture. Definitely feels like you’re strolling around in a pueblo at times.

Preciate this feedback. I want Quaxly so badly but chose Fuecoco. I need my water and fire type!

Also side note, this game is just not optimized very well for docked play. Handheld it is

Played for around 2-3 hours yesterday, still haven't gotten to Mesagoza. Just been hanging around the surprisingly large area they throw you in right off the bat. My Pokemon are probably going to be very overleveled...

I currently don't actually miss the Arceus systems as much as I thought I might, that's cool. Collecting Pokemon feels just as fun as that game, which is great! I'd seen the leaks so I already knew the new Dex is a banger, but animations even turned me around on Flamigo, probably my least liked Pokemon from the leaks. I don't know if this dex will surpass Galar or Gen 4 as my favorites or anything but it's definitely quite solid.

Characters so far (including Koraidon) have made great impressions. Love Nemona's sheer Goku energy

And to the elephant in the room - performance... yeah haven't really been bothered. Maybe it's because I'm still in the first area but from reviews I was expecting a lot worse. Also only encountered one visual glitch, and that was only because I got into an encounter while sliding down a small slope. Maybe it gets worse later on though, or maybe it's just me being blind to these issues in general

This game is one broken thing removed from being a technical disaster

but also it kept me awake until 5 am just playing and vibing around the first town so it definitely has that going for it

Did anyone else get the double-sided poster as a pre-order bonus?

The side with the crowned Eevee is cute

Having played for a bit, sure it's pretty rough looking, but not to the point it hampers my enjoyment. My 6 year old (the target audience, lest we forget!) is playing now and funnily enough hasn't once complained about aggressive resolution scaling or texture quality because she's too busy sending Binbag the Scatterbug out to beat up Lechoncs.

Yeah...performance is really bad at times, but I just played for three hours straight and had a blast.

I'm not even talking performance, mind you. All things considered the game dropping frames here and there isn't that much of a problem. I'm more talking, ground disappearing when the camera clips through, weird collisions, sudden pop in, etc.

Like this is some spicy "Sonic Adventure games on Dreamcast" level jank.

Can't say it makes the game less fun and engaging to play, though, and so far it's being a lot of that.

Don't think this game should be played docked at all. It's just a better experience in handheld

My copy arrives tomorrow 😅 from what I have heard, the gameplay is great, but the framerate is horrible. How is everyone feeling about the performance? Worse than Arceus?
The game is great and lots of fun, but performance is worst than I thought. Frame drops are constant, missing grounds, texture and wild pop in are nowhere near acceptable (I still can't put the game down - it makes a really good point on Pokemon being a really really phenomenal experience)

Completely anecdotal, so I'm not making any definitive claims here, but earlier I was riding down the stairs from the school into Mesagoza and the slowdown was like I was riding through molasses. I saved, closed the game and reloaded and did it again, and from eyeballing it it seemed substantially better. Not good, mind you (still framerate drops and weird pop in of NPCs etc.), but it definitely felt better. At that point I wondered if there's a memory leak too. If there is, it definitely needs patching.

The game feels like it could not handle a strong breeze at times

If you guys think Mesagoza's bad, just wait until you reach the other cities

I read something similar on twitter about entering and exiting locations to reset lag so yeah it seems like there are leaks of some kind

Anecdotally, I also felt the game stuttered and had it's resolution hit lower than before towards the end of my play session last night after exiting Mesagoza and being in the open world again. I shut the game off completely for the evening and loading it in again this morning things felt like they looked and performed a bit better. Maybe it's placebo, but still hoping Game Freak releases something to address things sooner rather than later.

I know the game has its problems, but damn if that art team isn't doing work. The crispy character and pokemon rendering helps.

I don't think anybody actually has any evidence of it being a memory leak other than game runs poorly, there could be various kinds of memory mishandling going on that doesn't necessarily indicate a "memory leak"

In fact I haven't heard gamers mention this until Xenoblade 3 came out, now I hear it all the time

Everything has so much personality. The Pokedex emulating a bookshelf, where every captured Pokemon nets you a nice little “photobook”. The playhouses and swimming pools and ice cream vendors in the towns. And of course the Pokemon themselves. (New Pokemon spoiler) Clodsire has even more of dopey appeal of a giant salamander, I love it.

BotW had a pretty nasty memory leak issue back when it first came out and that was literally the only Switch game anyone owned. If you played for too long without resetting, the Blood Moon would happen every few minutes instead of every half hour. Not sure if it still does that.

Anyway, so far, most of the tech issues I’ve run into are easily ignorable (by me.) The only performance issues I’ve been bothered by in games recently is screen tear and this game doesn’t do that.

This is the first game I can think of where the visuals and technical performance are so bad I find it genuinely off putting. I can't believe it shipped like this. Arceus was rough too, but it was at least visually cohesive - the literal world itself in this game feels unstable.

Oh well, team Quaxley.

Edit: I switched to handheld and that’s definitely helped. Much easier to stomach this on a 7” screen than a 55” OLED. 💀
