this trailer presents a compelling case against putting voice acting in Pokémon games

Myself, I've never gotten why people want VA in Pokémon.

There's of course the run-of-the-mill "Does every game need voice acting?" view.

But more importantly - and I say this as someone who loves them and their games - can people really imagine GF including voice acting in a Pokémon game that would add something to the experience and just not be extremely cringe?

It seems we're going to have hands-on impressions pretty soon, I really need some actual feedback on the flow of the game, if battles go fast enough, if you can move during a battle (like Arceus) and such.

I think for me, the thing is that Game Freak tries to tell stories in ways where voice acting would be beneficial or enhance the effect - long dialogue sequences, scenes like SwSh's Welcome to the World of Pokémon speech from Rose or Piers' concert - but they don't put in voice acting, so they feel hollow. They don't have to tell a story in that manner, but they do anyway, and rather than it looking like they're punching above their weight, it comes off like they wanted to do X, didn't have the time or budget, and went for it anyway. It feels kinda awkward.

Instead of assuming cringe, let them do it and see how it plays out. It was hard to watch the opening scene from Sword and Shield without voice acting.

IDK, I've never felt like there's anything missing from it myself. Maybe it's just being so used to it. Or just different strokes, I suppose.

Oh, sure. I wouldn't be opposed to VA being done and it wouldn't affect my opinion on a game significantly! It's just that it's been such a popular demand and every time it comes up I have such a hard time visualising it going well for anyone. But if they can pull it off well, great and props to them!

As much as that trailer was pure cringe for me, I think it’s setting GF up for failure when it comes to VA. That’s two trailers now that have had VA, and of course the game doesn’t actually have any. Folks aren’t gonna like that.

This trailer made me think of something, imagine if Pokemon did put voice acting in, but it was Japanese only
I’d be fine with this. As much as I want VA in Pokémon, I don’t have faith GF can do it well. If it were only in Japanese, I wouldn’t be able to tell if the VA was bad! Lol

Watching peoples reaction has been fun :ROFLMAO: . Still confused why people are saying she is a vtuber, she is just a streamer in the pokemon world, she is not gonna look like a real person lol.

That was a very cute ''trailer'' lol. Love the gym leader! Can't believe some people actually find her ''cringe'' or whatever.

Now I'm just imagining how great this game would be if it actually had voice acting like this...sigh

This isn't cringe, you goofballs. It's a trailer for a streamer gym leader in a game whose target audience includes children.

I'm a little surprised people still want more info, I bowed out after the second trailer or so. I already know I'm gonna get the game so no need to see any more.

I liked it, and also as other people have mentioned she's an streamer rather than a vtuber, so it's not like she is going to look different in game.

Also something funny watching the english and latam subs (yes we got proper one this time, not from spain), is that the english one has less style, if I can call it that way. The latam subs add more flavor, for example in the intro when she greets everyone the english subs just adds greeting in multiple languages while in spanish they "japanish" it with "holichiwa" (hola + konnichiwa)

Seriously, I'd settle for Zelda-like "Uhh! Heeeh? Huh! Ahh. Haah!" noises when a character speaks.
If you cannot have full voice acting, at least do that and voiced special cutscenes, please.
More than settle, I think Zelda-like sounds would be ideal. I really don't trust Nintendo to get good voice acting, and in general, sounds of that sort can be amusing and iconic in their own way.

Personally, I'd go for Animal Crossing voices.
Also works, I'll take it. Tho personally I feel the 'gibberish' style suits more stylized looks, like Animal Crossing and Splatoon, better. With anime-looking characters, it'd feel a bit odd to hear them speak gibberish. That's just me tho
@Bowser Sr. Yes, fair, haha. I think Zelda-grunts would work just fine. It is better than the dead silence. It is very odd to have such detailed and mouth-moving cutscenes, and all you hear is the background music, and then a Pokémon going beep-boop once.

Game Freak is trying to be more cinematic with their cutscenes, which is only gonna hurt the more they do them. they don't even need to do the fake noises and shit. Breath of the Wild strikes a great balance between full voice and short quips with every new line in gameplay segments. we don't need to go to extremes to make this work because it's been solved in a billion other games

this is the boat I’m in. like I understand some people like VA more than others. but I personally don’t think I’d enjoy it here.

An internet person telling me that the thing I cringed at isn't cringe doesn't stop it from being cringe, since I cringed.
Then say "I cringed", don't say something "is cringe". That implies an objective description of the content itself, and somebody's going to respond if they disagree.

Was a bit disappointed about no Pokemon reveal and them doing a “tune in next time” lol.

But I don’t mind the character design much. But funny how people say she’s a vtuber which she isn’t because that’s how she looks like, she’s more comparable to just a streamer in the Pokemon world using some fancy green screen backgrounds.

Yeah, as long as the writing stays that bad and in some instances infantile i really dont want real people actiong out some of those lines.

mind you, i also dont want those cutscenes, where somebody is animated as if they talk while staying completly silent.
at leagt in the last 2 gens they had cutszenes that where directed as if there was actual voice acting

and I don't see them not making these cutscenes. they would have to strip out damn near everything to make that work and people actually like the characters and shit. a "just functions" pokemon game wouldn't be popular, methinks

That's a very good point, the writing in Pokemon has always been weak, if not flat out terrible in many points, it's a bit easier to stomach if you're merely reading the bad dialogue instead of hearing it said out loud. Though by that point someone could simply argue ''then have audio AND an option to disable said audio'' and they would be correct anyway since a game that sells as well as Pokemon has no excuse for not having higher production values.

Same in german. She talked very casual and even used "hype-train" in her sentence.

I hate this type of character and everything it represents but I love "holichiwa" so much lmao

I dont argue for a just functions üokemon game.
I want a game that is child friendly without thinking its audience is stupid, the mechanics are to complex for 5 year olds so dont write if the audience is 5.

Or if you want to do that, and not have voice over, then at least dont direct scenes as if you have VO.

I mean probably better then now, nur thats essentially every game now (you usually can reduce the volume of voices to 0)
Doesnt change the fact that cutscenes directed with and without VO in mind duffer, and they wont create 2 sets of cutscenes.

Generally, the writing feels sometimes ai generated how flat uninspired it is and how it throws the power of friendship trope around.

Pleasant surprise to hear Fairouz Ai in this. She’s great! Bit of a waste if she doesn’t reprise the role for the anime though, since there’s no chance of VA in the actual game…

TPCI messed up with their marketing of it but we knew what we were getting into from elsewhere. It’s a cute little video; some of y’all have gotta learn to have fun, lol. If this is cringe i’d hate to see how people would respond to something actually embarrassing.

I thought the trailer was kind of cute, just a bit miffed about no new Pokemon revealed in it. Really made me wish for VA in Pokemon lol.

I did say you were asking for that, just that a game that's designed around removing the parts people liked (the characters) would be akin to the shit we heard the PR people for Marvel vs Capcom Infinite say. "they're just functions". that didn't go over well for good reason

Unpopular opinion I guess...

I love Iono! She's so cute! Her VA did a great job. I never thought Pokémon would add something like this in but I want more! >~<
that's actually not an unpopular opinion

I honestly dont think its an unpopular opinion, i can see how the design resonates.

Most "criticism" here is less of a criticism and more if dont care/dont get it/wheres my gameplay.

The design is fine, in my book its a solid npc in a pokemon game.

Its more the streamer/vtuber angle where famiboards is probably not the core audience.

She's cute but it's hard for me to really care about gym leaders when they pretty much disappear after you beat them and only exist for the few minutes you spend in their gym/fight them. Would like them to be more involved in the games from start to end.

Wouldn't the higher pre-order rate have more to do with the fact that the Switch install base is much much much much larger now?
