Do you guys think this Direct will be as good as E3 2021 or maybe more like September and February 2022? I think it will be somewhere in the middle, where we havent had an E3 so there is maybe more expectations. We are pretty good for 2022 but not so much for 2023

How many new EPD announcements are we expecting? 2D Mario seems like a lock but if 2D is there than there is very small chance of 3D Mario from Tokyo showing up (so time for the 2D one). But announcing 2 - 2D platformers in one Direct does not seem very likely. Also, it would be hype if EPD9 have something to show after all.
I don't know if 2D Mario is that much of a lock tbh. If it's June it can still be announced at February Direct.

On there being 2 2D platformers, it already happened!! E3 2017 had Yoshi's Crafted World and Kirby Star Allies.

E3 2013 had Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze btw, so 3D Mario and DK can happen too. E3 2014 had Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Super Mario Maker and Yoshi's Woolly World.

I think they can have a 3D Mario trailer as the reassurance there's games coming (like Splatoon 3/BotW 2), but they might feel like BotW 2 and MP4 teaser would be enough of big single player games of 2023 showing up.

2D Mario to me is the hardest to predict as we got Maker 2 revealed only a month after NSMBUDX released. We got 2D Mario's very close to each other previously and I think Galaxy 2 and NSMB Wii were also close enough, so I don't see any ruling out tbh, there's chances of 2D Mario early in the year and 3D Mario in the holidays.

Donkey Kong to be is also hard to predict. I would love to see it this Direct but depending on when it releases, it might fit more the February or E3 2023 ones. We've seen it and a 3D Mario supposed to release a month apart in the past, and ended up releasing like 3 months for each other, so both in 2023 isn't impossible.

Without knowing anything about it, it's going to be the best and worst direct ever.

Some people havent given up on Mario Odyssey 2 but I think they are just working on a brand new game again that is totally different, and we will be blown away whenever they are ready to show us

We won't see 3D Mario well after Donkey Kong imo. If EPD 8 is really working on one. They won't promote 2 games by the same studio at the same time.
Apparently both started development fairly close to one another and I would expect both to finish very close too(maybe 3D Mario would take longer tho). I wouldn't bet against bother coming like a half year apart tbh.

The best yet in my humble opinion. Dragon Quest XI S, Final Fantasy VII - XII, Trials of Mana, Collection of Mana, Romancing SaGa 2 & 3, SaGa Frontier, Shin Megami Tensei III & V, Persona 3 - 5, Tales of Vesperia, ...and many others...

The Switch is the dream machine for everybody into Japanese RPGs, especially the all-time classics.
It could get even better if the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters launch - truly an excellent library of all time classics and new RPGs. I'm pleased most of the Xenoblade series is on there, for example.

Also the first Nintendo system to have a meaningful amount of Western RPGs: Pillars of Eternity, Skyrim, Witcher 3, both KOTOR games, Diablo 3, Undertale, Divinity Original Sin 2.
So what are the content expectations with all the rumours going around?
I think the only things that should be expected are the two Zelda ports (Jeff Grubb has heard they'll be there) and Metroid Prime's remaster, given the timing. That being said...
In terms of betting odds, Fire Emblem seems like the runaway favorite. Out of all the internet rumors, that has the most solid foundation.

An NSO update seems like another strong possibility for this Direct.
I'm completely agreed with Emily that Fire Emblem is a highly likely announcement. I've said it numerous times, but the scheduling suggests first half 2023 is highly likely and therefore a reveal may well happen this week.

I'd say Breath of the Wild 2 and GB/GBC NSO are fairly likely to appear; the former especially so. Anything beyond that is a mystery. I'm really in the mood to revisit old favourites so while the mix I've mentioned isn't exciting, it is very appealing. The addition of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters plus GB/C (and maybe GBA) games to NSO would give me a real smattering of my favourite games to pick and choose from in the next few months.

I'm sure we'll get used in due time, but I think when we get a full title for BoTW2, it will be harder to change our habits than how it was with the first game (that was informally called "Zelda U" for a long while)

Makes sense, but don't really know how they want to handle it because if DK is H1 2023 game then they need to announce next 3D Mario even when the game is not really out imo. But I still believe that Mario game is tied to the movie, or close to each other, was hoping for 3D Mario all the time but it will really be the 2D one, releasing in late January or February, it just depends on when BOTW2 ships.
I think 3D Mario is definitely holiday 2023 material. DK can come either summer 2023 or early 2024. Hoping for H1 2023 tho I don't know how likely that would be. New 2D Mario alongside the movie and on the non-BotW 2 month of H1 is definitely something I want.

Zelda in March and 2D Mario late April.

I mean, "good" is always subjective but recent Directs have been heavy on first party announcements, with only September being 'light' on that front. February and June 2021, as well as February 2022, each had 4 to 6 (perhaps more?) first party reveals, which is on the higher end for Directs in the Switch era. By way of comparison, September 2021 had Kirby as the only new reveal, but also the NSO Expansion Pack plus first gameplay footage for Bayonetta 3.

Right now it seems like 3 or 4 games could easily be on the cards as 'new' announcements, but that as many as 3 are remasters (2 Zelda, 1 Metroid Prime, 1 new Fire Emblem). That already puts us at a notable number of reveals for Nintendo in one go.

Yeah, 3D Mario is not releasing earlier than Holiday 2023 so am assuming that Nintendo will not share much from it (if even anything) since I assume that Tokyo don't need any hiring for this so they don't need to reveal it that early.

I think February 2022 was better than E3 2021 in some aspects tbh. My real answer is will it be as great as February 2019? With the amount of first party titles rumored to appear on it(Zelda TP/WW HD, BotW 2, Metroid Prime Remastered, Fire Emblem Next), it seems likely.

When I worked at Nintendo, I suggested to hire Square to make a real Super Mario RPG 2. I was fired shortly after.

I think that whatever comes next will blow our minds and will be a sequel to Odyssey even if it's not called Odyssey 2. Odyssey was really huge, sold more than double the best selling 3D Mario did before, entered 2D Mario/Mario Kart sales territory, was universally acclaimed. I don't see them scrapping what they did there. But they might've enlarged the scope so much that it's gonna be a brand new kind of 3D Mario (maybe Bowser's Fury influenced, Galaxy idk).

I think they might go for a long hype cycle like Odyssey got, but it's not that long actually (1 year and a couple of months). I can see it being shown as a teaser now and then having a full blowout at E3 2023.

I know Grubb said that he was confident WWHD/TPHD would be at the Direct, but did he mention his view on if they would be a double pack or separate releases?

Curious too. If he knows enough about the marketing side of things to know that they’ll be marketed in this direct, I think he’d know how they’ll be sold

Where's the 2D Mario confidence coming from?

Give me this for the direct
Metroid Prime remake
New fire emblem
Zelda be it ports or botw2 or both
Gameboy NSO

Some good third parties like Alan Wake and Batman

A cure for my carpal tunnel so I can play them all

I’ll call this a great direct

Bonus if that F Zero rumor is also here as well as Everybody Switch

Hey @Emily , how are you doing? One of those past days a post of mine became a meme in which I said "don't want to @ Emily on this but I really wonder if she knows anything about a 3D or 2D Mario 👀" and I still can't contain my curiosity lol. Sorry to bother you, but do you have any insight on what's next for the plumber?

Please don't tag insiders, especially if they haven't already responded the first time

I think a lot of leads from Splatoon 2 not appearing again on Splatoon 3 is a big indicator that 2D Mario might be on the horizon.
I mean this in the most affectionate way possible, but y'all are wild. When something is described as a "lock", it seems to be 50/50 whether it's
  • multiple rumors from multiple reputable sources, or
  • like, a job posting or a specific person not working on another project

Yeah I wouldn't say 2D Mario is guaranteed. The last few 2D Mario titles have had a relatively short reveal to release period, even before Switch. The Wii U game was initially revealed just as a tech demo (NSMB Mii) in 2011, before being confirmed as a full game in spring 2012. NSMB 2 for 3DS was announced by Iwata in early 2012 for release later that year.

On Switch, NSMB U DX was announced just four months from launch, as was Super Mario Maker 2. The original Mario Maker was announced a little over a year before release, but given how much pressure Nintendo were under with Wii U, I'm not sure if we should expect that kind of long promotional window for the next 2D Mario; especially not with both 2D Mario titles on Switch having had near identical four month reveal to release windows.

I do think 2D Mario is a likely candidate for 2023; but unless it's early 2023, I'm not expecting to see it just yet.
And there was a rumor recently of a not "New" new Mario bros title in the world yeah?
We know Nintendo have been working on the next 2D Mario for a while, because EPD in Kyoto hired for 2D designers back in October 2019. That particular rumour you're referring to was from Zippo, who has something of a mixed record.

There's definite smoke around 2D Mario being in the works, but that's been the case since late 2019. I'm agreed it's a long way off being a 'lock' for announcement this week.

Last September Nintendo kept most of their 2022 line up under wraps, for example; there's no guarantee they choose to spill a lot of beans for 2023 this week.

Shadow in Smash Ultimate is a HARD LOCK. Guarantee that he's in.

EDIT: Quoted Post Redacted

Well, we know about the following announced without dates:

BoTW 2
Metroid Prime 4
Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp

Then rumored:

twilight princess HD
the wind waker HD
new fire emblem game
fire emblem remaster
F-Zero GX remaster
some sort of DK game
everybody's 1 2 Switch
metroid prime remaster

zippo also threw out 2D mario and Kid Icarus.

Thats' 13. So 12+ is accurate?

The star fox thing is just "I want this to happen" (and it's stated in the video) as you talked about lots of Gamecube remaskters or whatever. My personal desires make it into my videos a lot, but I never sourced anyone for it. Just mentioned "please let this happen" lol

I have a big botw2 hype that is resurfacing. For the last time, nate and grubb are you holding the announcement tomorrow for the 13th😭?

I was a bit tired of the 2D platformer games from Nintendo during the 3DS/Wii U era cause i feel like half the games were it. BUT now that almost everything is moving to 3D, i need to fix my 2D mario itch.

The positive thing is that if they do bring it back on Switch, it will have to be a whole new thing seperate from the New series since it's already on Switch. But we are also due for a 3D mario so who knows... There must be one of the 2 coming out for the Movie tho that would be weird not to take advantage of that.
