It would be exciting if we got one or both of the Gamecube Star Fox's brought to Switch regardless of their reputations.

Star Fox 64 is the quintessential Star Fox game, but Nintendo has overplayed that card a bit between the 3DS remake and it's availability on Virtual Console and NSO. So I'm hoping we get something new whether that be a different remastered game or a new entry in the series.

Seeing what happened to Metroid I can think that Nintendo strategy for “dead IPs” is

First release a remake/port/remaster to see how the market is interested in that IP (Samus Returns in 2017).

Then developed a new game now that you are sure it will be a succes (Dread in 2021).

So I’m very sure that if these new rumoured remasters of titles like F-Zero GX or KI Uprising sell well, they will greenlight new titles. The big problem is that game development now takes +4 years so those new projects wouldn’t be ready until 2027 at very least.

When it comes to testing the waters with remasters, Star Fox feels a bit tricky considering each of the games have their own little problems. Whether that'd be the fact that they're already available on NSO (SF1, SF2, SF64), the fact that they're not exactly universally beloved games (Adventures, Assault, Command, Zero), or the fact that they're so heavily built around console exclusive control gimmicks that make it more difficult to bring them over (Command and Zero once again).

Gamecube ports from Nintendo would make up for the lack of new entries that appealed to me this year. I've already beaten Pokemon Legends Arceus, and contentedly waiting for Bayonetta 3 and Pokemon Scarlet, but otherwise this year has only been good for a couple indies, some third parties, and mostly the 70+ games in my backlog

I might go back for Kirby, but...FDC, Brain Age, Sports, Mario Sports, haven't completed a single Xeno game I bought yet, and Splatoon I know will be the same thing that happens the last two games.

2022 is an objectively good year, but man my tastes were so far off from the target lol

So yeah, watching the recent Spawncast around the 40 something minute mark, Nate says there's a 50/50 chance of Donkey Kong appearing at this direct but feels they will likely reveal it next year.

Would be cool if Nintendo did us DK fans a solid and reveal it early, even if it's just a title tease.

First world problems but With the Nintendo Direct looming over us, I’m starting to get overwhelmed with how many games will be announced. There are so many games I have yet to finish (xenoblade 3, live a live, triangle strategy) and so many that are coming out in the coming months (that I want). It’s a good position to be in I suppose, just going to be tough with time manegment and priorities.

Golden Sun has a lot to do if it wants to continue on. The GBA were known for being pretty impressive graphically. The special attacks you could do left a big impression. Plus having a decent size world to explore with multiple towns. Good job making it seem like a big world. But perhaps it’ll need a few things in todays world.

-Needs voice acting.
-Good 3D artstyle if they go 3D
-Tighten that script. The games always have too much exposition lol, like they tell you the same thing every 5 seconds.
-Snappy combat. It’s prettt fast pace already, but anything to make it snappier would help. Could change gameplay as well if they want.
-and standard QOL stuff. Tho the originals were pretty good in areas back then already. Like buying equipment, you could equip it there on the spot and sell the old one. Random encounters tho were very frequent lol. Maybe an option to turn them off or something.

Doesn’t need everything. But I feel like Voice Acting is probably the most important for long JRPGs today. Of course gameplay goes without saying

I agree, just reveal the game even if it’s far out! We have been in the dark for to long.

No need to worry about ports, 2023 will be packed with dlcs too!

2023
Mario Kart Wave 4-6
PokeSV expansion 1+2
XC3 DLC
Splat3 DLC

F Zero GX?
Pikmin 4?

Maybe, but I'd caution that Metroid had other things going on at the same time - Federation Force had launched in 2016 and Metroid Prime 4 was entering development, so while Samus Returns was significant for nailing down Mercury Steam's involvement in the series, Nintendo already had bigger plans for the IP. The future of Metroid didn't hinge on Samus Returns because the Prime series was coming back regardless.
So I’m very sure that if these new rumoured remasters of titles like F-Zero GX or KI Uprising sell well, they will greenlight new titles. The big problem is that game development now takes +4 years so those new projects wouldn’t be ready until 2027 at very least.
Personally, I don't think this will be the case across the board. If an IP return does particularly well - if it has a sympathetic producer to stay attached and new secure development arrangements - then sure, Nintendo will probably look to keep that going. But equally some of these things could just be a one and done. I'd love to see Nintendo and Mages collaborate on more Famicom Detective Club, for example, but is that going to happen?

Absolutely, I agree that these re-releases are in some senses tests; they're tests for the modern day audience for dormant IP, and in some cases they're going to be tests for new external collaborators. But Nintendo being pleased with (for example) WayForward's work on an Advance Wars remaster doesn't guarantee Advance Wars continues; even if Nintendo decide to keep the creative relationship going, it might be a different IP that emerges.

Im hoping to see Ubi Milan's takes on some nintendo ips. I mean they re a gigantic studio already, im sure that after rabbids 2 they will be like at 600 or 800 employees. So they could spare a few hundreds for that. Idk maybe a star fox or kid icarus by them would be crazy lol

Yes please. Would like to see them do something more platform/action oriented.

I think the remaster strategy for lower profile IPs is ideal in the current circumstances and the Switch is the greatest possible fit; in past systems, potential revivals of that kind would always encounter some obstacles: "the user base isn't big/active enough", "this genre doesn't sell well on this platform", "this IP is more fitting for handhelds; why bring it to a home console", etc. Meanwhile, the Switch is a hybrid with a huge user base that buys games of all genres in quite impressive quantities. That's a very healthy ecosystem for a potential comeback.

In short, I guess what I'm trying to say is that remasters of old-ish Nintendo titles are... perfect for Switch.

I'm not sure about Gen 3, but I think the service will launch with Gen 1, and Gen 2 will be released at a later time. Pokemon is the greatest sub pull Nintendo has and they know it. If they can't get TPC to play ball then i'm not really sure what they'll be using to sell the GB library.
The seemingly-annual Pokémon Day-themed Pokémon Presents could reveal Gen 1/2/3 coming to NSO. Waiting that long for Gen 1 would suck, but launching with all Gen 1, then getting all Gen 2 on Pokémon Day 2023 wouldn’t be so bad. And that’s before spin-offs like TCG, Pinball, and the probable return of Stadium.

Very nice to hear that Nintendo wants to bring back more of their dead IP, there's stuff that's practically begging to be revived:

I'm keeping my expectation at just Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Metroid Prime 1 to be shown at the next Direct and anything else would be a bonus. While I can believe that Nintendo is planning a good amount of remasters, I don't think all of them will be shown off in the next Direct. Many potential remasters are probably still in early development or still under consideration.

Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons remakes, let's go.
Given it seems the existing HD remasters are coming soon, I feel like Oracle remakes are somewhat likelier in the next few years. If Nintendo are happy to ship 2 remasters soon, then I think they have plenty of Zelda planned.

I mean, it's definitely true that Nintendo have a golden opportunity right now to try this. Seeing things as different as Mario Strikers, Clubhouse Games, Detective Club and Advance Wars come back on Switch suggests Nintendo will go for deeper cuts. Sure, we've had Mario, Zelda, Xenoblade re-releases, but Nintendo are reaching for a more eclectic range of franchises than that.

Yeah that along with hopefully BOTW2 news will be good with me. And then maybe Mario Movie stuff, a surprise announcement, etc. But deep down im really really hoping this is the time for DK

I think more than testing the waters (which I definitely think is part of it) it's also all about making the developers familiar with the franchise itself and how it works instead of giving them the daunting task of making a brand new numbered entry.

had they jumped straight to Dread, we probably would have gotten some of the same issues from Returns but in Dread instead (the counter stopping the flow of movement being one of them).

Watching the Did You Know Gaming video about Retro Studios and wishing we'd got Sheikah of the Colossus.
Not sure why they didn't go Thief or Tenchu route with it. Shadow of the Colossus would be sick too, but Sheikah make me think a Stealth game would work best.

I've had a busy weekend so I didn't get to say this earlier. The week of the 12-14 is a 100% lock. For the first time in my life, I have to travel for my job for training. I leave on the 12th and return on the 14th. It's a five hour drive too. The direct is guaranteed now! You're welcome fami!

Also, I love this job and I've only been there 2 weeks. Criminal law is so much more interesting then civil law.

lol

"The Last of Us, Resident Evil 2/3 and God of War have over-the-shoulder cameras so we need to shoehorn one into Silent Hill 2. Fuck artistic integrity and cinematic symbolism. This is just how things be now."

I gotta say, it is funny how certain game design decisions are inherently seen as "outdated" and "backwards," in this industry, when Nintendo does them all the time and sells millions of copies whilst doing it:

I guess having a camera that you can't move all the time makes a game 'immature' or something.

Real talk, one of the reasons why I like playing Nintendo games is because how zoomed out the camera is in a lot of their games lol. In Xenoblade 3, I pulled the way camera waaayy back. Link is relatively small on screen compared to other third person adventure games. I like being able to actually see the environment without it being covered up by my character's ass. I like God of War 2018 but I think that it's a clear example of "artistic vision" getting in the way of the gameplay. The camera is so zoomed in that you get easily punched in the back from enemies and devs even knew this which is why they had to put icons to let you know that someone was behind you. They'd rather throw in immersion breaking icons than break from their vision of a zoomed in camera.

As long as they eventually come, that's fine. I would like to play them again and a remake would be a perfect way to revisit them.

The whole zoomed-in-over-the-shoulder look- I kinda understand where it’s coming from in shooters and horror games, that are often tracing it back to RE4/Gears before that. It works well in that the main weapons are guns and it matches the tension of focusing on what’s ahead of you at the cost of peripheral vision, usually on the basis that ‘I just checked behind me, it’s fine’. There’s a bit more static waiting and strategy around your fire arc and where you’ve chosen to make your stand. I don’t think it works well at all for melee combat and stealth though, that require a lot more awareness of your position in relation to people immediately around you, and where both you and the enemy move around more.

Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons remakes, let's go.
Enough with the remakes. I want a true followup to A Link Between Worlds. A sequel that's completely set in Lorule, where you play as Ravio. That's right, A mainline LoZ, ahem, LoH game where you don't play as Link, for the first time ever. I've been waiting for this moment since ALttP.

Nate commented on Spawncast that he thinks Donkey Kong is going to be announced either this next Direct or early next year. Hope either is the case!
I don’t know if that’s what he meant. It’s a very short segment. He said that there’s a 50/50 chance it gets shown but he said that for E3 2021 as well.

To be honest, im kind of burnt out on remakes. News about metroid prime 4, or a brand new original 2d zelda would be more interesting to me then a remake of prime 1 and a remake of the oracle games. Not to say i dont like those games, or dont want them playable on switch. The industry has just seemed more relient then it used to be on remakes to fill out the calendar year. And in a way, i get it, the framework is there, so its probably in someways quicker then getting out a brand new title.

Nintendo doesn't really have any other choice releasing remakes for Zelda or Metroid when new games take 3-4+ years to develop, even for 2D games.

I believe that’s the reason why they are expanding their studios. I could be wrong but I think, it’s for a quicker turnaround to keep annual franchises going strong.

Yeah aren't they building like a whole ass new office building adjacent to their current Kyoto Dev Center, alongside like a 900 million dollar investment or something in development in general?

Speaking of cameras being way zoomed in and stuff taking up too much of the screen, I remember one of the common complaints about Resistance 2 was how big the gun models were. During an interview, someone from Insomniac (it might have been Ted Price himself) said that the reason why the gun models were so big is because they spent so much time putting detail into them and they really want the players to see that. Definitely a case of vanity getting in the way of making a better gameplay experience.
