Fils-Aimé used an example from his former employer to support his case: "I bet I'd have some takers here today if I wanted to sell my Animal Crossing island from the latest Nintendo Switch version; I'd like to be able to monetise that. Blockchain technology embedded in the code would enable me to do that."

I feel like I'm just too old (and too not-motivated by money) to understand this. Can't video games just be a thing where you spend time for the sake of it, and not a place to labor for money? Like where would this naturally even go? Sell my specific game save file of BOTW? Sell my Pokedex in Legends Arceus?

Yeah I'd have to assume that if we don't hear what they're working on this year that something went on behind the scenes like a big game cancelation. Right now their silence is very similar to the silence on Retro Studios during the first few years of the Switch before we got the news they were being put on Prime 4. (DKCTF --> Prime 4 reboot at Retro announcement was 5 years, we are now 5 years out from Odyssey)
Depending on the veracity of a new Switch model being considered last year, their new game could also be going along nicely and they are waiting to announce it. I honestly have no idea, it just feels as believable as a project turning bad and being canceled.

Also hi, pleased to meet you all here.

My Walmart preorder of Nintendo Switch Sports is now expected on Saturday. I remember back in 2017 getting ARMS a day early. Now it seems that retailers would rather get preorders out a day late.
But you get that sweet water bottle. I will probably go into the store to get it, but I find that the brick and mortar stores don’t have their stock out for days sometimes.

I know I’m not the demographic for this, but it seems to me this will just be a way for celebrities to make some money off of fans with no impulse control (and could even be abusive in some ways). I guess the more expressive/artistic games could have “marketplaces” for things where actual talented people can sell some stuff, but I can only envision to worst right now.

Yeah, I dunno, I personally preferred Famicom Detective Club over the others so far in pretty much every category, especially gameplay. Maybe they’re just not my type of games, but TGAAC and 13 Sentinels (aside from the Destruction mode, which I wasn’t super into either) kinda just play themselves almost with very little thought needed from the player, I feel? While the FDC games were kinda like a puzzle in many places, where you have to try to figure out where to go, who to talk to, and what to say or present. And honestly they didn’t feel too dated to me, which I thought was actually super impressive—I was constantly in awe that these were NES games! I spent a whole weekend binge-playing both games with my partner almost nonstop except to eat and sleep, lol. It makes me sad that we’re probably unlikely to get any more of these games because the FDC series instantly became one of my favorite Nintendo franchises, and so far what I’ve played of similar games just doesn’t come close to me.
Despite its presentation FDC feels much more like a traditional adventure game whereas AA and 13 Sentinels are mostly based on visual novels. So I can definitely see why someone would prefer one over the other!

we can't even sell digital games and this dude wants to sell save files
First things first, why not allow me to backup my saves locally ?
I can't tell you how glad I was when I purchased a Switch again last week and discovered that Nintendo had nuked my Picross S 1-4 saves. Positively overwhelmed with feelings.

Oh damn where? I need to see this xD
south of Woodland tower, between there and the southernmost mud swath. It’s at the foot of the hill where the main mud pond and tower are, next to some camping bokoblins. I’ll try to document a little better later!

y'know, selling your save is yet another feature that New Leaf has that the inferior New Horizons does not

I’m absolutely with you. The whole idea of selling save files and the way he puts it makes my skin crawl. The point is to like… spend time with the games, right? Not turn them into another disconnected and haunted husk of profit? for what, other than scooping the point and meaning?

like. fuck. I hate it so much.

selling digital games I can understand, and being able to trade them, etc? that I get. though I don’t really support blockchain or the resources that blockchain requires.

but save files? no! fuck that! to take advantage of that philosophy, games will get even more fucked than the current landscape!

Sony/Microsoft/Valve/Nintendo can already give and remove licenses when they want , there is no need for blockchain to be used to allow users to sell/buy/trade digital games when the store owners are already able to do it if they wanted, they just don't want. I hate when people try to use the trading digital copies to justify using blockchains/NFTs in videogames.

Stanley Parable just broke my fucking brain. What the actual fuck.

I accidentally let a baby cutout get burned to death (I swear I tried clicking it) and the Narrator transported me into fucking Firewatch. Yes, the video game. He said "here, play someone else's game" and I thought he was bullshitting but he actually did.
that certainly wasn't in the original release!

i definitely want to get stanely parable but $25 is an awfully high asking price. i played it on steam ten years ago; i know it's not a long game.

For the people that played, I know Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes is out in 2 months. But I just noticed that the first FE Warriors game, the one from 2017, I can get that one for like 20 euro. Is it worth it? Been thinking about getting into Fire Emblem and will probably buy Three Houses soon, after I finish the Xenoblade games though.

merry snaxmas to all, and to all a good bug

I’m very excited too, but to be fair we’re only a third through the year

If you like musou games, it's decent fun, especially for only 20€. It's a spin-off game and pretty different from the mainline games, though, so it might not feel quite like getting into Fire Emblem "proper" compared to those.

That said, if you decide to try it and there's characters in it you really like, you can always check which game they're from and hop into the series that way :)

It's a fantastic musou, and a terrible fanservice FE game.

I’ve reached the final dungeon in skyward sword. Taking one last break and I’m finishing this today

I’ll probably do a few shorter games next

He ain't no gamer, he's just a marketing and sales person. Or is this what GameStop is aiming for nowadays?

Square Enix who is generally bad at publishing games working together with Arzest who is generally bad at developing games was never going to pan out well but from what I can decipher through that machine translation it sounds like Balan was extra messy.

Probably not as he left the board earlier this year because they wouldn’t articulate their strategy to him. I think Reggie is a business person first, so that’s the lens he sees most things through.

Reggie Fils-Aimé says he's a believer in blockchain and so-called play-to-own technology.

He appeared to be quite enthusiastic about the idea: "So I'm a believer in blockchain, I think it's a really compelling technology. I'm also a believer in the concept of 'play to own' within video games, and I say this as a player where I may have invested 50 hours, 100 hours, or 300 hours in a game, and when I'm ready to move on to something else, wouldn't it be great to monetise what I've built?"

Blockchain technology embedded in the code would enable me to do that."

To his credit, Fils-Aimé did say that the use of blockchain needs to be thoughtful and consumer-friendly: "Now I say that in the context of 'it needs to make sense for the player'. It can't just be an approach by the developer that it's interesting or it's a way for them as a development entity to make more money. In the end, it's got to be good for the player, but I see an opportunity."
Maybe it's just that I was late to the party, but I never saw what everyone saw in this guy.

And doesn't Nintendo take steps to stop people from monetising their games, like with the cracking down on AC trading for real money? Maybe this was why he left?

I apologise if I'm not really posting here much for the next few days or maybe weeks. I don't know. My mental health has spiralled into something resembling dog-shit. I've posted about it in the Mental Health ST if you want to look.

There's some pretty significant new content not in the original release.

Hey, don't ever apologize for needing a break. That's totally cool. We're not going anywhere, so you take as long as you need. I hope your mental health improves, fam.

For as much crap as I give Best Buy these days, the one thing they still do right is their release day shipping.

They're great now, but I remember waiting over a week for my copies of HeartGold & SoulSilver to arrive. Was unbearable.

If the next Direct passes without a new announcement from EPD8, is it safe to say that they probably worked on a cancelled project in between Odyssey and now? It'll be over five years in October. Every other EPD team is accounted for in one way or another. 3D Mario games normally come out every few years or so, but it's already been longer than that. Maybe they worked on Odyssey 2 but ran out of ideas and scrapped the project, or maybe they worked on a new IP or Captain Toad 2 or something? I don't know, their absence is pretty weird.
Their cancelled project became Bowser's Fury, I think.
Work is taking a huge toll on me. But hey, every day I push through, is a day closer to BotW2!
Sorry to hear that - get some self-care in when you can!

Sorry to hear this, too - best wishes to you.

I'm struggling too. The move has triggered a really severe relapse with my chronic illness, so I'm a bit lost at the moment. Love to all the Fami, though.

My pre-order of Chrono Cross just shipped today.

I'm kinda sad I made some jokes about Yuji Naka when Balan was released, now :

I just read through the English version that Naka himself just posted. So disappointing that this is how his career as a game dev ended, by being pushed out for trying to do a good job.

I am here for the wrath of Yuji Naka
I want Naka to strike SquareEnix with such passionate force that they split back apart into Square and Enix.

Look I don't want to defend Square Enix here at all

but uhhh

What if Yuji Naka isn't innocent in all this

I mean, a LOT of people clearly wanted him out? I've heard stories about his ego...

Nothing can ever be a hobby anymore. We're expected to monetize absolutely every aspect of our existence. It's exhausting. I hate it.
