Is it that time again?
Finally feeling motivated to do one of these prediction things again, so sure, this is the direct I picture in my mind.
Opening Announcement:
Fire Emblem - Personally I can’t shake the feeling that a new Echoes title makes more sense to come first from a dev timeline perspective, but for the sake of this hypothetical Direct we’ll assume that the next totally new title developed by Koei Tecmo is up next -
Game has a heavy steampunk aesthetic and setting; occurring far into the future of Jugdral, the world of the Super Famicom titles Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. Protagonists are twin scavengers; one becomes your avatar while the other remains important to the story. Trailer showcases some basic gameplay and story elements, but ends with a surpringly soon release date in May.
First-Party Headlines:
Triangle Strategy - Quick reminder of this title's imminent release on March 4th, with a short gameplay montage. Don't need to show much since they've been releasing multiple trailers on YouTube recently. One final demo will shadowdrop immediately after the Direct, which will allow you to transfer your progress to the final release; the same deal as all the other Team Asano titles. Speaking of; there's a chance we could see Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake here too; not 100% sold on that though so we'll have to wait and see.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land - More new footage and info on the game, though mostly elaborating on some of the features shown during the previous trailer (co-op, the hub town, new copy abilities, etc); maybe they show footage of a new area and boss this time to keep it fresh. Still launching on March 25th, of course, and they also explain that details on more Kirby 30th Anniversary projects will be shared later in the year; one such project being...
Kirby’s Dream Course Deluxe - I’ll keep predicting this until it happens, goddamn it. HAL staff mentioned working on a non-action spin-off in around 2020 or so, so here it is: the return of Kirby's Dream Course. This title will feature the original game's courses in addition to brand-new holes with new enemies, objects, copy abilities and more. This time up to four players can compete, with online multiplayer supported. It'll be set for a launch in Late April.
Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp - A re-reveal for Advance Wars, since the reveal trailer was awhile ago now. Will look a little more polished visually than that first showing; though people who weren't a fan of the art style the first time won't be on-board now either. They'll show footage of Black Hole Rising and the multiplayer component unlike at E3, before confirming the April 8th 2022 date already advertised on the eShop.
Splatoon 3 - This title will get a major mid-presentation showcase; a decently lengthy deep-dive into new weapons, mechanics, stages, modes and more. The game's new idol group will also have their big introduction alongside the confirmation of the return of Splatfests and other monthly events. To end the segement, a new Global Testfire will be confirmed for mid-March, exclusively for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers; with the full game set to launch in June.
Mario Party Superstars: Party Pass - NDcube have finally figured out how this post-launch support thing works. They're working on 4-5 packs that each include one character, one board and ten minigames; with the first board being Waluigi's Island from Mario Party 3. You'll be able to pre-order the pass (which includes every pack) immediately after the Direct, while Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscribers will recieve it for free. Picking up the pass will give you immediate access to N64 polygonal alternate costumes for every character.
Buddy Mission BOND - This is only here because I clearly need to will it into existance somehow. I'll take an English localization of this title in any form, even if it was only a digital-only launch like Famicom Detective Club. This game really deserves to make it worldwide, so i'll keep hoping that it does (without a fan translation being necessary). Besides, I think having some Bond action would serve as a fine tie-in for the next announcement...
GoldenEye 007 - As we're all anticipating now, GoldenEye 007 is back thanks to a collaboration between Nintendo, Microsoft and Rare. The leaked XBLA remaster has been revived for a modern release on Switch, Xbox and PC; including cross-play. The original N64 release, however, will also be made available to NSO Expansion Pack subscribers alongside The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask the following week.
Free Space - These directs always have unpredictable reveals that nobody could possibly guess, and this hypothetical is feeling pretty short on new first-party game reveals compared to competition from previous February showcases. Maybe a new Mario spin-off (definitely not kart) could show up? Maybe Tomodachi Collection 3 is closer than anyone thinks? Maybe SynSophia finally have the new Style Savvy ready? The surprise is the fun part!
Third-Party (Headlines / Sizzle Reel) -
Just a few random guesses based on rumors and gut feelings; not all that serious since it isn't easy to guess these parts:
- Alan Wake Remastered (Epic Games)
- Batman Arkham Collection (Warner Bros. Interactive)
- Chocobo GP (Square Enix)
- Chrono Cross Remastered (Square Enix)
- Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles (Aniplex)
- Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition (Capcom)
- Enigma Archives: Rain Code (Spike Chunsoft)
- Final Fantasy Tactics Remastered (Square Enix)
- Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series (Bandai Namco)
- MLB The Show 22 (Sony Interactive Entertainment)
- Persona 4 Golden (Sega) [Midnight Channel Bundle w/ Persona 4 Arena Ultimax available for pre-order soon]
- Rune Factory 5 (Marvelous)
- Tactics Ogre Remastered (Square Enix)
Closing Announcement:
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - Finally time for this one. We'll get a good look at some story elements but not a lot of gameplay outside of running around. Mostly a new cast in this first trailer, though some returning faces are teased too. Title drop, followed by a 2022 window. End Direct.
No new showings for Mario + Rabbids 2, Bayonetta 3 or BotW2 (saved for E3); no Metroid Prime HD reveal (also saved for E3); no Everybody Switch (eventual Twitter shadowdrop); no Donkey Kong (who knows when that’ll arrive); no Game Boy NSO (not sure when to expect that right now); no Pikmin 4; and no mainline Mario (not sure when to expect 2D
or 3D Mario at this rate).
