Today I realized I have used a Master Ball exactly once in my entire life: to catch Mewtwo in Pokemon Red back in 1998.

I got a hotter take... I have never played the Prime series.

I've been playing Halo, and it's rare I adore a multiplayer game this much... which made me want to return to Splatoon 2.

Here's how it went.

Launches Game
Checks hours played, how is it only 35?!
Checks release date, this game is almost 5 years old?
Damn, this still looks so good. I have to play it more.
Salmon run is up, my fave mode, and with a new equipment piece I don't have!
Joins match, team is wonderful, we kick ass
Completes match – ah I love this game
Maps and modes have changed!
Nervous laugh
Yep, salmon run is offline
riiiiiight, this is what pissed me off

It's pretty funny though, because Halo's matchmaking is also shit lol

Alright, I went back on tonight with plenty of time to spare to get in multiple Salmon Run matches.

This remains the best horde mode I've ever played in terms of moment-to-moment gameplay. Initial impressions of returning are "holy shit why didn't I play this more"

and then... I remember

I'm locked to one map per session (if it's even open)
Difficulty curve is very weird since it's randomly generated and locked to three waves
Specials and team comp of weapons are randomly assigned

Honestly, I expect Splatoon 3 to be a much larger jump than 1>2 was given the wait, and I hope they overhaul these systems. They've got a hit on their hands– not just a Nintendo hit, but an industry hit, if they can do it right.

I can't wait to see how they evolve Salmon Run and the Single player!!!

Me too. For some reason I thought you had to use a Master Ball for Mewtwo. I didn't even try to catch it normally, I threw the Master Ball immediately.

I'm not sure what the Subway stuff was back in the day as I was only mildly paying attention, but I will add my own (very late) opinion. I'm actually a big fan of Subway and I'm sad that the one near me closed down and got replaced with a Jersey Mike's, which is also good, but more expensive. Doesn't stop me from going far too often, though. I have the app and get double points on Wednesdays, so I'm kind of a regular there on Wednesdays.

While I'm not sure about the usage of "take" here, know that you are not alone.
yeah, I too have never played the Prime games

I'll probably still end up playing the remaster if it looks good visually (though remasters of Nintendo games of that style and period historically haven't), but I might skip 4 until I play a copy of the trilogy on Wii

Kirby ATFL file size is 5.8 GB. In comparison, Star Allies is 2.8 GB. A little bit more than double could mean that the game is packed with loads of content.

That's usually now how things work. The Forgotten Land probably higher quality textures and graphics, possibly more audio, etc. Bigger file size doesn't necessarily mean more content though that's not say Forgotten Land won't be content packed.

Oh we're doing hot takes? Well stand the HECK back, because I have a take so hot, it will knock your socks off. It's not actually Nintendo related, but I still want to get it out there.

The proper way to play the Yakuza series...is in order. Stop saying to play the sixth game first. I don't care that Yakuza 0 is a prequel, it's full of delicious references that you are not going to understand if you don't play the five previous games first.

As for a Nintendo hot take. A Link to the Past is okay, in my opinion. My objective opinion.

but he hasn't even mentioned Hey! Pikmin for the Nintendo 3DS, the Nintendo 3DS XL, the iQue 3DS XL, the Nintendo 2DS, the New Nintendo 3DS, the New Nintendo 3DS XL, AND the New Nintendo 2DS XL.
I decided to help out my favorite honorary member of Team January and fixed that for you buddy. :)

My Nintendo opinions are for the most part pretty standard and boring, there's popular IPs I don't like but within the context of a certain series I don't have many real "Ocarina Of Time is hot trash and the best Zelda game is Phantom Hourglass" tier takes I can think of

Like I think BOTW is a solid 8 and not some lifechanging game but I don't think that's enough to put me in Nintendo jail

I don’t think not having played something is a take - just a fact.

Seriously though Metroid Prime is one of the best games ever made and I really hope the remake comes this year and everyone gets to check it out who hasn’t played it before.

Mentioning the 8/10 thing reminded me of a story. Back in the day, when I was [AGE REDACTED], I was so angry about GameSpot's 8.8/10 review of Twilight Princess. I hadn't even played the game yet as it wasn't out, but I was furious. How DARE they!?!?!? Then I played the game, and I gotta say, it's definitely in my top six 3D Zelda games...

8.8 is really fascinating as a microcosm of both hype culture and all the problems with how game journalism is approached. The hype for Twilight Princess was obscene and off the charts after so many years of delays, probably one of the most hyped games of the decade, and it was perceived as the game that would "right the ship" for 3D Zelda since both Majora's Mask and Wind Waker had mixed reception among the fanbase at the time (both would be retroactively recognized as classics in their own right down the road, but that's another topic). A game scoring below a 9 was seen as an insult to what was supposed to be the true successor to Ocarina Of Time. People still get ornery over review scores but I don't think anything will ever match 8.8's reaction.

And y'know, I gotta say, Twilight Princess blew my mind in high school and I would have told you right then and there after completing it that it was my favorite game of all time. 15 years of hindsight, I still really like the game, but 8.8 is a pretty generous score all things considered.

What is your favorite Zelda out of curiosity? And if it's not 3D, then also what's your favorite 3D one?

I don't like to use "hot take" so as far as "opinion that goes against the generally accepted consensus", for me it's my relationship with the Maio & Luigi series.

The original and BIS and very often seen as the best ones, I think they are the weakest.
Partners in time and and Dream Team have been heavily criticized, they are my favorites. In fact, PIT came out when I was still young with a lot of free time, so it ended up being one of my most replayed game ever throughout the years (around 8 to 10 times).

Although I need to mention that I have an extremly high esteem for this series, so when I say the original is the "weakest" it doesn't much, it's still an excellent game.

Chickens count as pets, right? 8 out of the current 9 are on top. From left to right:
Nami, Angel, Mina, Olive, Cheeto, Velvet, Beet, Pepper.

The bottom picture is of Brittney on the left, who sadly passed away last year, and Flora on the right.

They keep us busy, but they’re cute and feed us, too! And as anyone else with backyard chickens will tell you, they ask have their own personalities and quirks!

Review scores are such a weird thing and part of why I don't like doing them myself is because of how differently people treat them. I like Edge's old scale which probably most closely resembles my own:
  1. disastrous
  2. appalling
  3. severely flawed
  4. disappointing
  5. average
  6. competent
  7. distinguished
  8. excellent
  9. astounding
  10. revolutionary
Sunshine and Twilight Princess are, to me, solid 7s but if I had to grade them within the context of how most review outlets rate their games I'd have to raise my scores by one or two points.

I feel like for me I am so picky about the media I consume it's very rare I am going to play/watch an outright disaster. Even most professionally made shows/movies/games have something of merit even if I strongly dislike almost every creative choice they make.

I kinda like a 3 scale. Just keep it simple: 3 = love, 2 = like, 1 = meh. With "meh" kinda being like, it's not an awful trainwreck, but ultimately I just come out kind of indifferent to it. There are games and shows I've put a lot of hours in where I definitely end up feeling "meh" at the end.

And like, there are degrees of love, but in terms of "how much do I recommend this product," to me an 8.5 and a 10 are basically the same. Genuine, honest to god 10s are so rare, I feel.

It depends on what the purpose of the review is. If it's just a buy/play recommendation I definitely agree with you. There's little to be gained from increased granularity. If it's to establish a sort of "canon" it makes sense to differentiate between an excellent game and a revolutionary one (to use Edge's terminology). That said, I find number scores more detrimental than anything due to the culture surrounding them.

Why did no one tell me the NES NSO controllers are currently over 40% off? That's the only reason I'm here!

jk but for real did I just miss it or did no one talk about it

Go play Captain Toad, it's free for NSO members. End.
Nintendo proving they still hate Europe by not allowing this outside North America.

In all seriousness though I think expansion pack subscribers should get a wider and more frequent selection of game trials. Have a 2 week game trial every month with 2 or 3 games available; just start doing something to add value to the subscription so that when the price is hiked again, at least there's more all round value to it.

Yeah i know, and am from Europe myself. They also did this Captain Toad trial 2 years ago for Japan only. So what i did i claimed 7 day NSO trial on my US account and just playing it there, it works.
And yeah with expansion pack there should be more trials or just some DLCS for free like Champions Ballad, Octo Expansion etc. but am sure they can do it just when Splatoon 3 DLC releases or something, i would not be surprised if they will be like "oh and you can play x game sooner if you have expansion pack".

Limited availability of maps and modes at any given time isn't going to go anywhere, so certainly don't set your hopes on that happening.

Let me drop a real hot take on you all: R&D1 was better than EAD

I don't actually believe this but R&D1 was pretty good, and I have a certain fondness for being the experimentational arm of the company

we love all of the old Nintendo teams in different ways

I never beat Twilight Princess, only got probably 3 dungeons in and am looking forward to revisiting it on Switch sometime in the future.

That being said, my ranking of 3D Zeldas goes:

MM > OoT > BotW > WW HD > SS HD > TP

Wind Waker and Skyward Sword HD have opposite issues IMO, those being Wind Waker's weak dungeons vs. Skyward Sword's weak overworld. Thankfully the HD versions of both games offer improvements to pacing and QoL. And their stories are both compelling. I'm tempted to make them equal, but I loved the experience of sailing and found exploration to be a joy in general. The pacing is overall stronger for me.

Twilight Princess, though a great game I'm sure, never drew me in with its aesthetic or Wolf-Link segments, and I didn't get far enough to experience the supposedly amazing dungeons.
