StarTopic Nintendo Direct Speculation |ST8| Press Your (Nintendo Direct) Luck!

I see you're a frog of good taste.

And let the record show that Tim is even better. :)
Tim with the new 2023 mix is better but the original's production keeps Tim just behind Let It Be. Though I prefer the original mix for Swinging Party and Here Comes a Regular

Oh, I think I have yet to hear that mix. I'll look into it.

Eight years of consistently good marketing, strategies and solid sales should be enough evidence that “Because Nintendo” is an intellectually dishonest justification of anything.

I wouldn't call the Switch era as having consistently good marketing. The shadowdrop reveal for major game and periods of total radio silence haven't been great.

They never did that in previous generations.

I wrote a previous post about this I'm just gonna drop here:

"Nintendo hasn't been good communicating their announcements since their Direct structure changed in 2015 in my opinion. They fall into these stretches of complete radio silence and then have nonsensical spacing of the announcements they do have. (e.g. Skipping a E3 Direct in 2016 because we only have BOTW to show, except these other announcements we're just gonna stick on the treehouse stream. Skipping the June Direct in 2022 for......reasons? Shadowdropping Prime 1 Remastered. Doing Twitter Direct announcements when they could've been served better being saved for actual events. Etc.)"

I don't feel Nintendo is bound to the timings that some people here would like to see.
They don't need to launch by march 25, they don't need to make a presentation in january 25, they don't need to have a trailer in october 24. They don't need to spill the beans at the investors meeting. And they don't need to announce their xmas games in an april direct.
There is no law that forces them to reproduce the Switch strategy 100%. There are mutliple factors that come into play for these timing decisions, all dominated by what will lead to maximum overall sales. Just wanting the exact same timeline at all cost because it worked last time in a very different scenario is not the way they approach this.

The only two big "Shadowdrops" were Prime Remastered and Pikmin 1+2. I dunno how much they would have sold if they were not shadowdropped but it's not some common occurence

The Wii U name.
I would argue that the name was actually pretty logical. Like, trying to ride off of the success of the Wii brand for what basically was supposed to be "Wii but now with Core Gamer(TM) appeal". At least their explanation for it was sound to me. It was admittedly a pretty terrible name but not illogical.

I mean....do games with bad marketing sell? That would be a topic in it's own right
They can. If Nintendo did literally zero marketing for TOTK the game still sells 15m+ just based on pedigree alone. That's the reason why Pokemon games always sell well independent of their quality.

I'm so sick of the "Because Nintendo" rhetoric
It will survive when continue to do dumb
Nintendo stuff like delist Mario All Stars 3D, Mario 35, and the Fire Emblem 1 English ports because they're "special" promotional products. That and their marketing strategies which result in periods of total radio silence when they have the announcements to justify a Direct.

......Nintendo did a shit ton of TOTK marketing. Where does this "no marketing" thing come from? They just weren't constantly shoving it in people's faces months before release so people got unreasonably nervous about it

I'll probably get torched for saying this, but Palworld came out of no where and sold 15m+ copies on Steam without any real marketing budget.
They can blow up like that but that's far more of an exception than the rule, and only happens in very specific circumstances and usually requires the internet to latch onto it for meme reasons or streamers grabbing it or something. It's very unreliable.

It was shown at SGF last year. Spots at Keighley shows aren't cheap, unless maybe you're a mega-name like Naughty Dog or Square Enix

It absolutely had a sizable marketing budget, plus Xbox's marketing as a Gamepass game

I still think they delisted 3D All Stars not only to incentivize short-term sales because of FOMO, but also to minimize competition with other mainline Mario games on the system, namely 3D World + Bowser's Fury

Taking down Mario 35 is nonsense though

I don't think BW remakes and WW/TP ports are happening this year, but this makes sense otherwise. I hope games like GX HD aren't sent out to die and are actually promoted properly in Directs

Don't make me tap the "we live in a bubble" sign. 5000 odd is a minute fraction of 140 mil.
An announcement is not when major marketing begins. When you see a billboard or ad on TV, that's when the real marketing has started.
I don't remember seeing ads targeted at the average consumer dropping more than two months out from release (at least for Nintendo).

This is true - but mostly I just want the console to be announced and official enough that we can start getting game announcements for it. Even if it's just "this will be on the Nintendo NX"-style stuff like we saw a few times pre-Switch, it'd be nice to at least get to that point.

June is the traditional Direct month but that does not sit well for July - August first party announcements. Can Nintendo really reveal a major game just ONE month before its release? Hell, June is even too close for a September release, I think.
Honestly, I think Nintendo being able to get Metroid Prime Remastered and Super Mario 3D All Stars less than a month after announcement physically does mean anything can happen... we could have a late July or early August game on our hands for instance

For a game with 0 marketing I sure saw a ton of ads before Youtube videos about it.

EDIT: Ah, misread. Anyways, we already know that Nintendo poorly marketing something can make it fail, just look at like, most games in the WiiU/3DS era and even the WiiU itself.

Oh don't get me wrong, me too (mostly so I know how much money I'll need to save). Yeah nothing against wanting an announcement, just tired of folks here forgetting they're not the average consumer and saying with absolute certainty Ninty would or wouldn't do something.

This is the year of total radio silence

R A D I O S I L E N C E

periods of total radio silence

stretches of complete radio silence

their marketing strategies which result in periods of total radio silence
Unrelated to any point you're trying to convey, and not to pick on you because you're not the only person I see doing it, but when did "radio silence" replace simply "silence" as the preferred term for periods of no communication? I never quite got it and it seems ubiquitous.

She's a big fan of Ready or Not and the new Scream movies.

I am imagining a mob scene across the world with retailers needing riot guard security and gamers not knowing how retail stores work after buying all of their crap online for the last ~10 years.

I love that kind of chaos!
"What the fuck is a raincheck?"

Yeah, it's not just Nintendo. Regardless of when they were announced, the real marketing blitz starts 2-to-3 months out from launch: PS5 had its first TV ad in August 2020, Xbox Series in October 2020, PS4 in October 2013, Xbox One in September 2013, and Wii U in October 2012.

Switch had a quick hardware reveal to launch schedule, but the marketing schedule was honestly pretty normal.

I've understood it to mean "silence from a large organisation on a particular subject".

"Nintendo is silent" - Nintendo's offices are empty for some reason and the campus is quiet.

"Nintendo is radio silent" - Nintendo hasn't made any announcements about something.

It also happens that all their communication channels with consumers are over literal radio waves, TV, WiFi, satellites, etc.

The term goes back to the early 1900s. I don't think it really replaced the use of just "silence" in that manner, so much as it better emphasizes the idea that you were expecting communication of some kind, rather than there simply being no communication.

In 2008 i talked 5 of my Friends out of buying a PS3 an gofor a Nintendo Wii Instead.
We played hundreds of hours of Monster Hunter Tri,Mario Kart Wii
and over 800 hours alone of Call of Duty: Black Ops & Modern Warfare on

"Ok… what kind of Nintendo fan are you?"
  • bought a wiiu
  • have 2 3ds'
  • stayed a fan even after the wii paradigm shift and the wiiu downfall
  • have a total of over 38 gba/ds/3ds/wii/wiiu/switch physical games in my collection and over 50 digital switch games
  • will always debate someone that while emulation is cool, it doesn't replace the console experience

I can’t believe that this is the week where we’ll finally get the amazing april Nintendo direct. Get hyped irresponsibly

Thing you don't like =/= bad or illogical marketing

And don't get me wrong. I dislike all these examples too. But I can just say that, rather than trying to critique Nintendo's corporate strategy out of my depth

I will never forget that I bought the Fire Emblem 30th Anniversary Special Edition and then just forgot to redeem the code/buy the actual game on the e-Shop before they took it down 😭😭😭

Honestly, I kind of wouldn't be surprised if it gets a good amount of marketing this week because Golden Week is happening next week! We definitely see some more marketing for Endless Ocean but I think maybe we finally get a larger trailer for Thousand-Year Door (I think someone mentioned it'll also have previews this week? I wouldn't be surprised if that's alongside a new trailer that has features that'll be talked about in the previews!)
