Biggest Breath of the Wild 2 glow-up so far?

Corruption/blight going from purple -> red.
It's definitely a reference to Skyward Sword at the very least. In Skyward Sword, when Link first arrives on the surface, there's a cutscene that takes place where Link sees in his mind the Imprisoned. The screen goes dark and what looks like the red Malice comes from the bottom left corner of the screen. It looks like the beginning of the 2nd BotW 2 trailer was based off of this scene.

Check the 1:55 mark on this SSHD video, pay close attention at 2:15

Now watch the intro for the BotW 2 trailer

I wonder if we will get some of the concept enemies that was posted for BOTW, it would fit perfect if we did explore the underground world (it being a much more darker side of BOTW2)

Kind of like a

Hyrule - Middle Ground
Sky - Haven
Underground - Hell

tloz_botw_27.jpg
BotW2 being Ancient Cistern XXXXXXL would be so tasty.

I just have one thing to say:

Ancient Cistern and its execution is just flawless from top to bottom. What a dungeon man.
It's so fascinating how SS is Dungeons: The Game and BotW is Overworld: The Game. Both excel at their specialisation and leave something to be desired on the other front.

Imagine BotW but with SS' dungeon (art) design and music (and BotW seamless interior-exterior transitions a la Hyrule Castle) plus more fluid traversal and combat... nnnGGGG.

One nitpick about the Ancient Cistern (which I adore) - while 'hell' is a very menacing atmosphere, the zombie Bokoblins (and Skyward Swords Bokoblins in general) feel rather non-threatening. Stalmaster and Koloktos are great bosses that fit the vibe perfectly, otherwise. If you put Ocarina's redeads or creepier zombie 'blins then it'd be perfect.

Speaking of which, I want them to go full creepy and foreboding for BotW2's underworld. Those Eldritch abomination concept art creatures, classic enemies like Redeads and Gibdos, warriors like Darknuts and Stalfos Knights. The first teaser shows that Ganon's Malice is literally seeping from the chambers where he is sealed, I want to see the implications of that - that the underground areas of Hyrule are so saturated with Malice that it becomes the antithesis to the heavenly skies. The Well and Shadow Temple in Ocarina are implied to be torture chambers for Hyrule's prisoners, bring some of Hyrule's dark past into the mix, and possibly the Shiekah's history of experimentation. There is a lot of room for environmental storytelling. Of course the underworld could be so large that there is still room for peaceful areas of reflection and relief.

Same as Tantalus really. All that build-up for a monster that looks really silly.

Oohh baby.

I'd be stoked if they stretched up the art style a bit. Gimme those fever dream monsters from the concept art, psychedelic angelic beings in the sky etc.. Even though I adore the BotW art style, it's also at risk of becoming stale for a second game, so I'd love it if they went ham.

also i might regret saying this because whenever zelda gets creepy it makes me wanna poop my pants

Yeah... the Sandship is also another excellent dungeon that would've fit perfectly in Breath of the Wild, as a piece of the environment you could stumble across in the ocean. The dungeon getting torn apart in the end by a massive hydra is a great premise - but as you said Tantalus is... Eh.

Tbh I don't really need more info of the game itself to buy it lol from the two teasers and the comments of more, I know I am buying it day one. So all I really need is the title and release date lol but I would love to see at least some elements of the basic story and new gameplay elements! What we saw so far with link falling through the air and that move that made the spikey ball go back up the mountain was amazing!!!

Also def would like a few more big dungeons. Liked the shrines and loved the openness of hyrule castle, so some mix of the two would be phenomenal!!!! Agree with everyone's comments of a mix between ss and botw would be chef's kiss lol

City in the Sky is my favorite Zelda dungeon ever.

A dungeon like THAT in BotW2, maybe have it being the highest point in the entire sky map...

DAAAAAMN.

Honestly? I don't even need the title. I'd have I pre-ordered already if they'd let me

Alright, inspired by the Hot Takes ™️ over in the Twitter Speculation thread:

I wouldn't mind most dungeons being Hyrule Castle style - i.e. a place that feels like a place and not like a puzzle. They did some neat things grounding puzzles in the environment there: opening gates with cryonis, freeing monsters in the castle dungeon by hitting levers, opening passages by bombing walls or shooting eyes, discovering secret hallways with magnesis...

I'm not a big fan of continuing the "yeah, it's a test so it looks artificial" design after the 120 we got in BotW.

Twilight Princess comes into my mind, the house where yeto was. That was awesome. The water temple as well!

Don't think we'll this again until early 2023, hoping for a gameplay trailer + quick turn-around release date like last time. Latest trailers do not look like they are running on the Switch at all, so I think we're looking at another BOTW Wii U/Switch release situation here.

why wouldn't it run on the Switch?

Its running on the switch. It’s just a very well optimized game with beautiful art.

I'm very confident we'll see it again in 2 months. And BOTW was made for Wii U. It'll look a bit better because they don't have Wii U holding them back.

I think we're way past the days of the "looks too good to be on Switch" argument, because uh...

Very rarely have we seen volumetric clouds on Switch, and the camera cuts having near perfect AA solutions which is even rare for a Series X/PS5 title nowadays. If this is actually running in real-time on the Switch, I'm seriously impressed.
the clouds aren't volumetric tho according to 'Brainchild'. DF just thinks they are. They are allegedly 2D clouds.

EDIT: what @Hermii said

It's running on Switch. The Zelda team is masterful at optimization and art direction. Breath of the Wild is still the most incredible game (when factoring in the scope, art, performance, etc) on Switch IMO, and that was built initially for Wii U. BotW2 is going to show was Switch is truly capable of.

It’s not actually volumetric though. It’s billboarding, just very very well done. Brainchild did an analysis.

Was brainchild's analysis the one that showed how the lighting angle on the clouds doesn't change as the camera rotates in the trailer? I remember seeing a thing months ago that actually tracked the highlights and shadows during that camera sweep and determined the clouds were billboarded because the lighting angle stays pinned to the camera's position (as sprites would do), rather than the environment (as volumetric clouds would do).

I was just as impressed by the analysis as I was by the clouds themselves. LOL

Brainchild is a gem.

Yea, that was the one.

BotW's in-engine and prerendered cutscenes have basically perfect IQ. The sequel footage looks like a mix of in-engine cutscenes, prerendered cutscenes, and curated gameplay clips. Nothing stands out to me as 'too good for Switch'.

Also I know I said back in the Event thread that anytime someone brought up "too good for Switch" I'd just share the boxart for Nier Automata, but, these new clips from Xenoblade 3 are just too good not to use instead.

Yeah, I think this Switch game is actually better-looking than a PS4 game. Come at me. 💪

I'm glad i came into Breath of the Wild uncorrupted by points of comparison. It's the most beautiful game I have ever seen. So many times I would just stop and look around and stare. Sunsets in particular look absurdly good.

But I think a lot of people play it and can't get over the low res ground/rock textures or whatever. Shame. I hope that won't be me in the sequel.

Edit: I will say that the haziness/softness of the image and the washed out colour palette are actually a huge draw for me. It looks so good and I cringe when I see it emulated "clean". My one worry about the sequel is that it looks like they've gone for a cleaner image. But I've not seen enough to know how I feel about that.

I played it on Wii U, which rendered in an even lower resolution than Switch, and it's still one of the most breathtaking games I've ever played.
pun not intended

My bad, I stand corrected. Nintendo programming wizards at work! 🧙‍♂️
That being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if image quality is touched up in the trailer though. Doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the pro, that’s just normal industry practice,

Or that scene with the sword was a pre-rendered cutscene.

With games like Xenoblade 3 and BotW2 I don't say "these games look good for the hardware". I think these games just look good, period. One can infinitely touch up a game by boosting resolution, framerate, LoD, filtering, etc and there's no denying that a hardware upgrade would make those games into even more sugary eye-candy. But when I look at those titles right at this moment, I think they are damn pretty, among the prettiest games I've seen. And yes I own a gaming PC with the bells and whistles bla bla, doesn't change my mind.

There are many Switch games that look better than most games on PS4. PS4's games are mostly more technically impressive, but Switch (first/second party) games look better. Nintendo pushes art and world design over shadow resolution, AF filtering, texture resolution, polygon count...

Lets not pretend there aren’t amazing looking games on Sony platforms, artistically and technically. Especially first party.

I know you said “most”, but I think first party Sony is ace.

I played most of the PS4 first party lineup. Between great looking PS4 and Switch game I can't pick a winner. Uncharted 4 has 10/10 graphics, but Mario Odyssey has too. I just don't get people that say that Switch games look like shit.

Cross-posting from the Tweet speculation thread, fanart of the trailer Eyegore(?) that I found particularly stunning while speculating about possible future 'Divine Beasts' in the sequel.

The vibes of this are so immediately different from BotW1, as one would expect and hope, but still. Folks already figured out the symbol is most likely a suzu bell, used to summon spirits and ward evil. More fuel for the Sky Islands as a holy place to purify the Master Sword (and Link?). This fellow looks like a literal "Divine Beast", maybe an ally. Looking forward to more classic enemies returning in this reimagined style.

Thanks for posting that rad fanart @Serif! I didn't have a great sense of what the character looks like from the trailer but now I feel like I understand it much better. It's kinda cute.

I had not spent even a second trying to break down what that creature actually looked like - never crossed my mind that it was lizard-esque.

I just re-watched the trailer and I can see it now 100%. So cool

I wanna add the following to the SS Dungeon discussion:

The Sandship Dungeon + the whole sequence before finding it are in culmination seriously one of the best gameplay sections I have ever experienced in any game.

They really are one of the most talented devs around and I can't wait to see what they have in store for us with the sequel.

One gameplay section that also belongs to my favorite experiences in gaming is the whole Vah Ruta route you have to push through.
The rain and the enemy placement is really perfectly balanced to make the most out of BotW's mechanics and systems. And at the end of it you get to see Zoras Domain which also leads to a Lynel section that rewards you with a cliff jump back down into the water.

Then Vah Ruta itself is also really great. All this together is just brilliant tbh. Encountering such a well designed, structured section organically in an open world is nothing short of extraordinary imo and it is quite underrated in my book.

Also this theme is pure fire:

EDIT: I forgot to mention the Zora armor upgrade that lets you swim upwards on waterfalls. chefkiss

Speaking of the Zora armor - horrible mechanics behind that one. It slowed down the experience so much having to swap armors just for going up waterfalls, then back to your preferred defensive gear when you were done.

I love the idea of armors allowing you an option to negate or limit specific types of damage, emphasize your preferred type of weapon or damage, or something more superficial like the glow in the dark. Locking an entire traversal mechanic behind the armor was trash. Hope it never returns.
