Week 3 - What four games would you like to see most in Year 1 for Switch 2 and why? You can pick either realistic or dream guesses.

1) WaveRace - Show off those new graphics! And gameplay-wise it would be very refreshing among all those AAA games that seem more and more samey to me.

2) Metroid Prime 4 - As much as I love my Switch, I don't want to see this game die on an old console the hardcore crowd will not care about anymore as soon as the new shiny box has come out to play.

3) Excite Truck - Make it crazy. Make it go over the top. Make it fast. Give rewards for racing through a dense forest without crashing into one of those trees flying by at an insane speed. And then go flying for at least half a mile.

4) Ocarina of Time Remake - Boy, it's time for this one to receive a true makeover. It has to go beyond being a graphical update. OoT is great, but the remake has to be a re-imagining to some extent to make it work in today's world.

If that came to fruition, I would be one happy gamer! Throw in Rogue Squadron IV as well for good measure. ;)
I’m ready for that true Ocarina of Time remake too

Our first two weeks of this thread have flown by and while we of course can’t rule anything out as Nintendo has a regular degree of unpredictability in their actions, after this week of speculation it seems we are getting a clearer consensus on when to expect the next Nintendo Direct! Before this week’s discussion question, the only greater thread business I want to touch on is we did have a fun new poll this past week. It will close somewhere on Friday night or on Saturday and be replaced with a new poll given it was tied to this week specifically. While inspiration may strike, I’ll just say if you have suggestions for fun polls that can garner 300+ votes by all means share them in thread. I do read every post here even when it gets wild :) Onto this week’s question then!

Week 3 - What four games would you like to see most in Year 1 for Switch 2 and why? You can pick either realistic or dream guesses.

For my own answer, a new 3D Mario and Metroid Prime 4 are definitely my top two. It’s been far too long since Odyssey and certainly too long since Prime 3 so I really want these two games to be there ideally at launch. I’d also like to a see a Definitive Edition of Xenoblade Chronicles X on Switch 2 in year 1 that adds a significant amount of new story and perhaps a new area to explore somehow. With the trilogy done, I really want to get back to Mira and open world Xenoblade and I think a Definitive Edition done right would really be a showpiece for the system. For my fourth and final pick, I’m going to pick a new Advance Wars game. It won’t be a graphical showcase I imagine, but it’s something that done right I’d be playing for years to come.
I'm very similar:

1) Metroid Prime 4 - I want to see the big unveiling of this game with a Switch 2 trailer that really stuns and have it be a launch title.

2) New 3D Mario - I have no idea where 3D Mario goes next, but I know that they've always managed to blow me away with concepts like Galaxy and Odyssey so I'm confident they can do it again

3) The next Monolithsoft game - I don't know what this will be either! XCX2? Something XC-related but a new thing? New IP? Whatever it is, Monolith are wizards with the current Switch so I can't wait to see what they can pull off with a Switch 2

4) Might as well shoot for the moon here - Dragon Quest 12! I can't wait to see what they do with this and would love to see it on Switch 2

All aboard the delulu train
  1. Custom Robo - Free me from agony; I've suffered worse than F-Zero fans.
  2. Halo: Master Chief Collection - Switch does not have a First Person Shooter game that offers robust online multiplayer, and I am not a fan of Call of Duty. It's an older game that has since been eclipsed by Halo Infinite, is effectively content complete with 8 in-game seasons already good to go for a brand new audience, and I still believe the collective internet shock of "Halo on a Nintendo console" would be for the ages.
  3. Deep Rock Galactic - throw in a lil crossplay (and wireless local multiplayer), and I would think it would get a fair few number of sales
  4. Valheim - Same as above wrt crossplay (and also same Coffee Stain Studios publisher), Ashland update is set to arrive in the first half of this year; and if Valheim were to launch with the same PC content within 365 days of Switch 2, I believe it would do extremely well
Bonus games too delulu for the delulu list:
  • TimeSplitters HD Trilogy and/or TimeSplitters: Rewind
  • RuneScape

Games that I don't really think have a chance at happening for the Switch 2 launch that I'd love to see anyway:

Nintendo vs Capcom - if Smash is a couple years off, let a spiritual successor to Tatsunoko vs Capcom fill the gap in the meantime. Wild roster picks mainly plz. You know they'll have Ryu, Morrigan, Mario, and Link, but I sure hope the rest of the Roster is like Rebbeca Chambers and Elma levels of obscurity

Sea of Theives - I know there's rumors flying around now and some people are BIG mad about it, but when I saw it mentioned I thought, "Damn, this really is the sort of thing a ton of the Switch audience would absolutely love if they only just ever got the chance to play it. So I hope it happens now.

Final Fantasy IX Remake - I adore the 80's Jim Henson-y dark fantasy world of this game and feel like it got shortchanged releasing when it did originally. Switch 2 launch audience boosting it to heaven would be justice served imo

Kirby Air Ride 2 - it's been soooo long and this game feels like it could have evolved into something even greater than the original with everything that has been added to the Kirby series since then(so many characters and concepts), and with the way multiplayer gaming has evolved. Give it to Sumo Digital. Let them go all out.

damn it's fun to daydream huh

We have a date! Hardware peeps say it’s bs, but let’s just speculate whatnot means for announcements.

This feels more like them just having a 'launch window' date estimate rather than actual facts, but September or so was roughly when I expected it anyway, so sure why not? Don't think it changes much if September is actually it. Big reveal sometime between March and June still makes sense in that case.

I think this could give Halo MCC the shot in the arm it needs as well.

You can definitely feel the hype and excitement for Switch 2 building from pretty much everyone at this point - general online fans, the press, etc. We'll be seeing more articles like that and random rumors and speculation coming out of the woodwork the more time goes by without anything official happening.

I hope the dooming and responses won't be too overboard if we get a Direct soon that's still only Switch 1 with no Switch 2 news to be found yet.

@Raccoon the Church of Ray Traced Wave Race grows
Look we're already enough of a religion without calling it a church.

We have prophets, and moreover already a schism where some believe in some but not others, we have a day of reckoning, a purported "end date" for our "reality", we have dogma, we have chants and shibboleths. We have core beliefs and sects believing in different days of reckoning. We have "mass" (podcasts) where some observe and some do not, preferring a "personal" relationship with the deity in question.

People trained in cult awareness would be sounding the alarms if they saw this place, and some have
literally tried

@Raccoon the uh... Non-Denominational Secular Social Group Who Looks Forward To Ray Traced Wave Race grows

No I'm fine calling it a sect so like as I'm a priestess.

I really hope it's clear this is all me joking
okay but if Ray Traced Wave Race is an actual sect and we're talking ranks then you realize...

A Switch 1 direct BEFORE Switch 2 gets announced would make me genuinely uncomfortable.

Direct opens: Switch 2! It's coming! We'll tell you more later! For now, here are some games coming to Switch and Switch 2. Gameplay footage captured on Switch 2.

*snap*

I suppose but that'd be such a wet fart introduction
Mostly I'm just hoping the briefest introduction to say "It's here, more details later," just so we can start seeing footage of DLSS games and the jump in quality from Switch to nuSwitch

I suppose but that'd be such a wet fart introduction
Hey, Switch's best selling title was revealed in 2013.

Personally I think it would be a pretty alright introduction, but I agree they should at least reveal it first and tease a new Mario or something before they go off talking nothing but cross gen.

A Switch 1 direct BEFORE Switch 2 gets announced would make me genuinely uncomfortable.
That's like 100% will happen. 2024 is still the year of Switch, the successor will just catch it by the end. March reveal and November release still sounds the best.

Personally a Switch 1 Direct is much more hype for me than just a 3 minute successor reveal trailer. I need games now, stuff launching this fall, or even next year are no good for me.

Week 3 - What four games would you like to see most in Year 1 for Switch 2 and why? You can pick either realistic or dream guesses.

Honorable mentions:
  • 2D Zelda: It’s been long enough, hopefully grezzo is developing
  • A new Next Level Games revival: Next Level is so good with its reboots and revivals, and to see how they would handle something like Mario and Luigi or earthbound would be awesome. F-Zero would also be great
ACTUAL GAMES:
4.) - Metroid Prime 4. It’s been long enough part 2 (see 2D Zelda for part 1). The remastered Metroid prime is a visual and gameplay delight, and if we can get something even close to that quality with 4, switch 2 is launching with a great start
3.) - Animal Crossing (insert catchy sub title here): As much as I love new horizons, we absolutely need another game to fix that games issues. Even accounting for the fact that the pacing would have probably been better if Covid hadn’t have us all locked inside, the game just didn’t launch with enough content. The next animal crossing needs to have most of what the previous games had at launch, and prepare a significant monthly update for AT LEAST the first year or two. In terms of new features I want, more dialogue options for villagers is an absolute must, I mean the villagers in New Horizons were embarrassingly hollow. More mini-games/ online hubs like what we had on Tortimers island would be great, as would an easier way to sink up with friends online or locally. Speaking of which, why can’t multiple people rule over an island? Why does player two have to be treated like a second class citizen when it would be far cooler for them to actually be able to effect the island? One last thing I really want (I could go on all day I just need to rap this section up eventually) is being able to rule over multiple kinds of islands. Not only would this entail getting new towns for your villagers, but also buying out/ making treaties with other players towns. What if this hypothetical future animal crossing game put a focus on towns interacting, battling, conquering, trading, and being connected to each other. I think it would be a great idea
2.) - INSERT NEW FRANCHISE HERE: Need a new franchise from Nintendo after the last new franchise they made wasn’t quite up to snuff. I would definitely prefer a new single player game, but if handled well a new multiplayer game could be fun. If it is a new multiplayer game, I need it to actually have sequels that expand upon the formula instead of just being small upgrades (TAKING NOTES SPLATOON?)
1.) - 3D Mario: 7 years, me hungy for more 3D Mario goodness

Week 3 - What four games would you like to see most in Year 1 for Switch 2 and why? You can pick either realistic or dream guesses.
1 - New Wario Land - Love the series, 3 being my favorite, it's been a while since Shake It! and would be a good way to have a new 2D platformer now that Wonder is out and the next Mario will take a while. A remastered version of Shake It! or a Virtual Boy Wario Land remake instead of a new entry would also be appreciated.

2 - New 2D Zelda - The Switch didn't get a new 2D Zelda, it's been over 10 years since the last new entry, far too long.

3 - Pokémon Mystery Dungeon - We got the Rescue Team remake and now I'm hoping this year's spin-off release will be either a new entry or a remake of Explorers. I'd say the series has the best pokémon games by far.

4 - 3D Mario - Yeah, easily the most likely game I've listed but we all know how much we want it. I would prefer 3D world style levels but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I know I'm cheating by having 4 extra games, but:

Non-Nintendo games (also mostly dreams)

1 - Mega Man 12 - Having access to so many games with the collections is fun, but I want a new main series game.

2 - Kingdom Hearts - Proper ports that is. I haven't played any of the games but I really want to get into the series, I can't even get the cloud edition because there are no servers in my region (not that I'd get the cloud editions).

3 - Dragon Quest - We're probably getting the Dragon Quest 3 remake in the first year already, but come on with a Japanese 3DS you could play ALL 11 mainline games, why not bring more games (like all of them) and/or localize Dragon Quest X Offline.

4 - A New The World Ends With You - NEO released 14 years after the original and was somehow even better. Please Square Enix I don't want the series to die (a remake of the original with modern controls could also be fun).

That's like 100% will happen. 2024 is still the year of Switch, the successor will just catch it by the end. March reveal and November release still sounds the best.
That isn't consistent with the evidence at the moment, I'm not sure where this certainty is founded.

What 4 games I would want personally?

A Sekiro/bloodborne/elden ring not-Zelda (or still Zelda but very different thematically, new world/lore some entirely/new mechanics; they can keep link on the cover if they need it for marketing). That takes the formula/engine of open air and older 3d Zelda's to make something new, preferably the world would be scaled down for more dungeon content/less open fields).

Monolith Soft New IP set in a very different style of world (completely unique areas if it is sci-fantasy again; maybe if its pure high fantasy/ scifi some other twist on top like Spaghetti Western or China Silk trade line or something extra), Not attached to the older games story, with some more action elements (maybe not too different to FF7R in which the older bar fill type of moves are very important and the combat is still mostly strategic). Ideally with a class system again. A Story that moves quickly and gets to the gameplay and hooks you immediately like Xenoblade 1/3 would be great. (I don't want to have mandatory sidequests content for a good chunk of the game time like X/Torna).

Square Enix makes a new Chrono that looks like that new Sand Land game. Happy whether it is ATB, pure Turn based, or FF7R, or even pure action. I just want something from this IP with great music and an interesting world. Double down on time manipulation ala some mini Outer Wilds mechanics. I love to see how the world reacts to the player and evolves over time. If it has to be open world, at least a much smaller one.

Some new big local multiplayer (online also) game. I don't care if its Kart X, Smash Whatever, Splatoon with local, or something new. As long as it has legs that's fine, preferably with a co-op campaign/story mode. Local multiplayer is peak gaming and in my opinion is Nintendo's greatest strength.

what if Nintendo doesn't have anything about the Switch 2 in the next Direct, but they do structure several of the announcements to include a moment where the words "Switch too" are said, so that people will get jump scared and stay awake the whole way through?

That isn't consistent with the evidence at the moment, I'm not sure where this certainty is founded.
There's literally zero evidence for anything out there. Only legit thing we have the Gamescom demo that's it. And that wasn't even clear enough. Everything about the successor is shrouded in mystery.

Don't expect anything to come between the first reveal trailer and full blowout presentation for the successor. It's always been like that. March reveal and June blowout. Anything Switch related should come before all of that.

You clearly climb into my head and steal my dreams at night 😱 All of these (plus Pikmin 5 and Portal 3)

Week 3 - What four games would you like to see most in Year 1 for Switch 2 and why? You can pick either realistic or dream guesses.

Animal Crossing - Unlikely for the first year, but if they reuse most of the assets from ACNH, it could be likely. I would like this game to be a return to form for the series, including deeper villager dialogue and interactions. I would love character stories that unfold over the course of a few days to keep you checking back in every day. For a premise, revitalizing a run down village would be cool. The older games were kind of like that, but the town never ended up looking that much different. With the new customization options from NH, I think it would work well for that premise.

New Monolift title - Not sure what this would be, but I trust them to make a great game.

Pokemon Legends - This is probably the most likely one. I loved the original so much because you really felt like a part of the village, so I hope they expand on that. I don't think the catching mechanic will be as interesting the second time around, so I hope it has a new hook.

Gamecube on NSO - this isn't really a game, but I'd love to see GC added to NSO. A lot of the games are getting remasters, but there are a lot of niche titles that would be cool to play on the go.

Week 3 - What four games would you like to see most in Year 1 for Switch 2 and why? You can pick either realistic or dream guesses.
1) Star Fox - While it was fine that Ubi got to utilize him for their short-lived toys to life game, and StarFox 2 is now on NSO for preservation, Fox never got anything any new and substantial on Switch during an era where it would've been great to take advantage of that impressionable Switch demographic. But considering that part of Fox's lot in life is that his series is always closely linked to showcasing technological achievements and/or a new gimmick, I could think of "worse" things than having a new Star Fox game be a Year 1 title that is also a graphical showcase of what the Switch 2 is capable of. I just hope there's a great game to be had, too, and whatever developer had gotten the nod gives Fox and co. the direction and permanent home they've needed!

2) Monster Hunter Wilds - I now have a pretty good feeling this game will hit Switch 2, and just truly kicks off the new era where every platform is going to get every MH game. Of course, if Wilds isn't on Nintendo's new platform day and date with the others in 2025, then something would be very wrong...

3) Metroid Prime 4 - Maybe it'll be cross-gen, and maybe it won't. At this point, I just hope that Retro gets to make the game they want to make, and without having to make too many sacrifices to make it happen. If that means it's moved to Switch 2, so be it.

4) Daemon x Machina Titanic Scion - Now that Armored Core 6 has helped propel mecha games back into mainstream, let's keep that momentum going with its "little brother", DxM!

Bonus:

Astral Chain 2 - Taura has been pretty quiet here lately, besides being on hand to help with FFXVI's Eikon battles. I hope that means that besides those details, he's been quietly directing AC2.

Team Ninja Nioh-like Using a Nintendo IP - Thus far, Nintendo has been the only platform that hasn't been privy to any of Team Ninja's fun takes on a Soulslike, and I'd love to see that changed. Zelda, Murasame, whatever, give them the Nintendo property of their choice, and let 'em cook.

Splatoon 3 for me was the equal of any of EPDs other games

Digging all of the pick four year 1 Switch 2 responses. Lot of love for the big games I hope to see and a great interesting spread of left field picks :)

1. New F-Zero - would be the perfect way to show off the new hardware and to fill the gap while they figure out how to Smash Bros the new Mario Kart. F-Zero 99 paved the way.

2. Xenoblade Chronicles X - A good filler release while Monolith works on their original title. Would benefit greatly from the more powerful hardware. Basically a new game to most players anyway.

3. 2D Donkey Kong - 🐒

4. 3D Mario - it would be a fun video game
